A major joint services operation is ongoing to recapture convicted mass murderer, Mark Royden Williams and on Saturday, the Guyana Police Force announced the offering of a $10 million reward for any information that can lead to his arrest.
Williams, called ‘Smallie’, in a daring daylight ordeal and assisted by men with high-powered weapons, escaped from the Mazaruni Prison on Friday. This is one of the country’s maximum security penitentiaries.
The Police advised that persons with any information can contact them on telephone numbers: 225-6940, 225-8196, 225-2317, 227-1149 or the nearest Police Station.
“All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,” the statement noted.
It should be noted that aiding and abetting a prison escapee can result in three or more years imprisonment when or if convicted.
The convicted mass murderer escaped while being escorted back from a visit with the aid of heavily armed accomplices in a speedboat.
The escort party was fired upon with AK-47 automatic rifles by men inside boat alongside the Mazaruni River.
The boat and its occupants, including Williams, proceeded upstream, past Itaballi landing, while Prison guards and Police in support undertook pursuit.
An investigation is underway, and persons are being questioned in relation to this extremely serious incident.
Williams was convicted of murders stemming from the Bartica massacre in 2008, when he, along with other gunmen, ambushed and killed twelve (12) persons, including three (3) policemen. Additionally, he had been sentenced to death in September last year over the killing on January 23rd, 2008, of Guyana Defence Force member Corporal Ivor Williams.
Royden Williams had previously escaped from the Camp Street Prison on July 09, 2017 but was recaptured on October 10, 2017, on the Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
A motorcyclist, identified as a Georgetown resident, died Saturday in an early morning incident on the Rupert Craig Highway.
Police said the fatal incident occurred at about 03:00 hrs in the vicinity of the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.
The incident involved motorcycle #CM 1892 driven by Shamar Frank Wilson, a 27-year-old of Quamina Street, Georgetown.
A statement from Police Headquarters noted that the motorcycle was proceeding west along the southern carriageway when a dog ran across the road into the motorcycle’s path.
The front centre portion of the motorcycle collided with the dog and the motorcyclist lost control and fell.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition by an ambulance and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
ExxonMobil Guyana says its financial performance continues to be strong with record production recorded in the first part of the year.
Much more on that performance will be known when the company releases its financial statements, expected by the end of June 2023.
And according to Vice President and Business Service Manager for ExxonMobil Guyana, Phillip Rietema, the company will go further to release for the first time an annual report, providing much more details and transparency on its financial performance.
From a government standpoint, Rietema said nearly US$500 million was generated in revenue through royalties and production between January and May, 2023.
This goes directly into the Natural Resource Fund where roughly $500 billion has already been deposited in oil money.
And this year, nearly 30 per cent of the national budget is financed by withdrawals from the fund.
Rietema said he was happy to see Guyana benefiting in this way but did not provide preliminary figures on benefits accrued to the oil giant.
He confirmed, however, the company’s commitments to ensuring it is audited to international standards while keeping costs down.
And with responses submitted by ExxonMobil to the findings of the US$7.3 billion audit for 2017 to 2020, the government and the company looks forward to wrapping up the ongoing process of queries soon.
The Chief Financial Officer for the company said there are some disagreements to be expected and it is perfectly normal.
“The audit process is going to have some back and forth… there is another 60-day period where there can be comments back and forth on that and that’s the period, we’re in now,” he told reporters during a press conference on Friday.

L’ambassadeur de France à Port-au-Prince, Fabrice Mauriès a mis les points sur les i suite au tollé provoqué par le don de 17 motocyclette à la Police. Il a fait valoir que l’aide française, qui a été qualifiée d’insufisante, vient en fait suppléer au sous financement de la Police. L’etat haïtien ne mobilise pas assez de ressources dans le budget pour les forces de l’ordre.
Le diplomate note que l’enveloppe allouée en 2023 , 24 milliards de gourdes, est insuffisante pour que les forces de police répondent efficacement au défi sécuritaire. Il insiste sur la nécessité pour que les haïtiens paient plus d’impôts pour financer les forces de l’ordre.
De plus il s’étonne des critiques sur le don de 17 motos faisant valoir que ceux qui s’offusque du don de 17 motos, s’opposent également au déploiement d’une force étrangère pour appuyer la Police.
Le diplomate rejette également d’un revers de main les arguments faisant croire que cette aide, de moins de 20 000 dollars, pourrait être faite par des Haïtiens fortunés. Il fait remarquer que ces fortunés n’ont jamais fait ce geste préférant payer des agents spéciaux pour leur sécurité rapprochée. Statistiques à l’appui le diplomate français a renvoyé la balle dans le camp des élites et des dirigeants politiques haïtiens.
Il attire l’attention sur l’urgence d’augmenter l’effectif de la Police. Le ratio est de 0.7 policiers pour 1000 habitants tandis que le standard mondial est de 2.2 policiers pour 1000 habitants.

Les forces de l’ordre ont essuyé le week-end écoulé un revers dans la lutte contre les gangs. Un policier a été tué et deux blindés incendiés à Source Matelas, localité de Cabaret au nord de Port-au-Prince.
La patouille, impliquée dans le dispositif sécuritaire limitrophe de la prison, a été pris dans un guet-apens des bandits de la zone dans la nuit du 17 au 18 mai 2023. Les deux blindés ont été pris dans le même piège installé dans un barricade. Les deux blindés immobilisés ont été incendiés à l’aide de cocktail milotov.
Le policier Roberto Charleston, de L’UDMO, a été capturé non loin de la Cimenterie Nationale, zone sous contrôle des gangs. Le policier a été humilié puis assassiné par les bandits. Le porte parole de la Police , Gary Desrosiers, confirme que le corps du policier a été brûlé par les bandits.
Le gang de Source Matelas est affilié au chef de gang de Village de Dieu qui veut prendre le contrôle de cette zone industrielle.

The first shipment from the company owned and operated by husband and wife Wouter Tjeertes and Rennae Johnson occurred in April 2023.
Two Product Lines In First Shipment
The tree-to-bar offerings in the first shipment featured its original and flavored lines of chocolate bars. The flavored line includes jerk, lemongrass, coffee, and coconut flavors. Just a month after the first export, the firm received excellent feedback from its distributor, which took the products to Cologne, Germany’s ISM fair.
Pure Chocolate Wins Awards
In 2021, Pure Chocolate Company won a gold medal and two bronze medals at London’s 13th Academy of Chocolate. It also received the Marcus Garvey Award for Agriculture in recognition of its efforts to empower its farming partners with the knowledge they need to produce beans of the highest quality.
Company To Expand Export Plans
Pure Chocolate intends to expand its export operations to other markets in Europe immediately, said Tjeertes, who added that its distribution partner will begin to offer the product lines in seven countries, including Belgium and Germany, which are two of the greatest consumers of chocolate in the world. In conjunction with the promotional initiatives of its distributor, Pure Chocolate plans to raise its profile on social media in Europe by advertising on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok in areas where the product has been placed for sale.
Owners Welcomed Aid From JAMPRO and International Trade Center (ITC)
Tjeertes noted that he and his wife have received support from the International Trade Center (ITC) and JAMPRO, Jamaica’s promotional agency, since 2021 to help them identify and exploit their current export market while targeting other markets as well. Assistance from these programs allowed the couple to travel to trade fairs in London, Paris, and Amsterdam and to learn about their markets via online training sessions. Without this support, Tjeertes said Pure Chocolate would never have been able to make the deals that resulted in their current distribution partnership. He noted that JAMPRO in particular was an active advocate for the firm and helped to showcase their products to resources such as the Jamaican High Commission in London.
New Export Operations Mean Business Expansion
Because of the new export options, Pure Chocolate has expanded its artisan studio in Ocho Rios and now employs six staff members in the production of chocolate “from bean to bar,” and It is partnering with more farmers to obtain additional raw material. The company will next apply what was learned from its European expansion to the United States market. Locally, workshops on chocolate manufacturing are offered at its studio at Island Village in Ocho Rios on weekends.
