Craig Butler, the founder and owner of the Phoenix Football Academy, believes that Jamaica could “easily” win a World Cup. In an interview on The Fix, Butler, who was instrumental in the development of Duhaney “Whisper” Richards, a recent signer with the English Premier League’s Chelsea FC, Butler said that Jamaica must choose a football system to play as other countries do. He cited Jamaica’s ability to produce outstanding players through a willingness to work hard and make a commitment to excellence.
In the interview, Butler added that implementing a systematic approach to development like the rest of the world does would ultimately result in a World Cup win. Using “Whisper” Richards who has trained at Phoenix Academy since he was 12, as an example, Butler said that at 6-foot-3-inches tall and just 17 years of age, Richards is already very powerful and that his genetics are strong. Butler added that If he is patient and is developed properly he could be a “monster” player. Butler went on to describe the potential for Jamaican players, saying, “If you are the fastest human beings on the planet in a game that has evolved to use speed over everything else – intelligence, speed, skills – all effort should go into incorporating all the training and skills they have in Europe.” Butler said he has already done this at Phoenix.
The Phoenix Academy started in 2011 to help young men and women make advancements in their lives and was designed to imbue young people with the concepts of loyalty, honor, leadership, friendship, moral and social responsibility, and growth through the sport of football. At the time, there was no program like it in existence. Later, Phoenix was viewed as the “farm” for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz national team, and it began to develop football players for professional play and obtain football scholarships for players. Many of the original players involved with Butler’s efforts at very early ages went on to lead their high school football teams and to win prestigious awards. Examples include Kyle Butler at St. Georges College, Dominic James at Jamaica College, Jason Wright for Wolmer’s Boys, Kevaughn Atkinson and Andre Wilson for Calabar High, and Leon Bailey for Kingston College. All of them were from the Phoenix Academy.
Before signing with Chelsea, “Whisper” Richards was an outstanding player at Kingston College (KC) during the latest schoolboy football season and was instrumental to the success of KC playing in the semifinals of the Corporate Area Manning Cup as in the final of the Champions Cup. Richards made 31 goals and had 19 assists in his last season.
Current membership of the Phoenix Academy totals 452 players in the US, Jamaica, Canada, Dubai, Qatar Africa, Europe, England, and the Caribbean.

The infant died on Tuesday hours after she was dropped off at her day care in Ogle, East Coast Demerara by her mother.
The woman, Shavannie Gravesande, offered few words on Wednesday after she witnessed the post mortem examination at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary but was visibly hurt and upset.
“The results of the post mortem is haemorrhage to the head and suffocation of the neck.
“So, as I understand it…the baby fall off a bed on her right side and strangle, something around the neck strangle [the baby] and make [the baby] ain’t get to breathe,” the child’s father, Odysseus Clement, told the News Room.
Clement and Gravesande are now turning to the Police for assistance to investigate the child’s death since they believe officials at the day care are culpable.
“Well, now we going and make a report.”
Clement said he received no telephone call or explanation from the administrators of the day care.
“They ain’t call we or nothing. They go to the health centre with we and we left she last night at the station taking reports and that’s it,” Clement further related.
The News Room understands that the baby girl was found unresponsive at the day care and taken to a health centre where medical professionals attempted to resuscitate her about eight times.
When that failed, they called for an ambulance from the Georgetown Public Hospital but it seemed too late.
The child was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital minutes after she was brought in.
“I need justice, I need somebody in jail, I need that day care to close down because I don’t want any other parent to go through this pain, because it ain’t easy.
“It wasn’t a natural cause of death so I need somebody to be held responsible,” Clement lamented.
The father now wants to ensure that no other parent has to go through what he is experiencing.
During a briefing with members of the media yesterday, Regional Chairman David Armogan said that when there is a heavy downpour, water would usually lodge on the farmlands for “two to three days.”
This he said results in farmers losing an extensive amount of crops.
He said with the new pump in place, when the koker is not operable the pump will serve the purpose of pushing out the excess water, benefitting both cash crop and rice farmers
“It is pretty big so it can push a lot of water off the ground so maybe in a day and so it can take off about an inch or inch and a half water,” Armogan said.
Jainarine Dhanraj, a cash crop and rice farmer said he was pleased that Minister Mustapha heard their concerns and moved swiftly to have the pump put in place.
“That go benefit us nice for the May/June time because when the rain fall hard the koker shut the pump go pull out the overflow water.” He further said that when the koker is closed the water would usually flood the farms but with the pump in place, such will not be the case.

Contrary to the organisation’s claim of having all its “ducks in a row” the company has not been in good standing for nearly three decades.
In a press statement dated the 20th March 2023, the organisation categorically stated that they have all their “ducks in a row as far as routine legal and financial matters are concerned.” This was in response to a statement penned by the Hon. Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, which exposed the organisation as a sham and highlighted its partisan practice.
However, records prove that the organisation, which was incorporated on the 27th of September 1979, is not in Good Standing for failing to file its Annual Returns since incorporation. The Company has failed to apply for Continuance under Part IV, Division B of the Companies Act and therefore owes the State some $38,649,600.
Section 336 (1) of the Companies Act states that every former-Act Company shall within two years after the commencement of the Act (a) apply to the Registrar for a certificate of continuance under this Act; and (b) comply with the requirement of section 9. The commencement date of the Companies Act is September 27, 1991.
In accordance with Section 342 of the Act, when a former-Act company fails to apply to the Registrar for a certificate of continuation within the time limited therefor under Section 336, then, after expiration of that period (a) the former-Act company may not, without leave, sue in any court but may be made a defendant to a suit; (b) no dividend shall be paid to any shareholder of the former-Act company; and (c) every director or manager of the former-Act company shall be liable to a penalty of six hundred dollars ($600) a day for each day during which the former-Act company carries on its undertaking thereafter.
From the date of failing to apply to the registrar for a certificate of continuance to end-February 2023, twenty-nine (29) years, and five months (5) would have elapsed. From the time of its incorporation, the company has had six (6) subscribers.

6 subscribers x $600 per day = $3,600 per day for all subscribers
$3,600 x 365 days per year = $1,314,000 penalty for one (1) year
$1,314,000 x 29 years = $38,106,000 for 29 years
October 2022 (31 days) – $3,600 x 31 = $111,600
November 2022 (30 days) – $3,600 x 30 = $108,000
December 2022 (31 days) – $3,600 x 31 = $111,600
January 2023 (31 days) – $3,600 x 31 = $111, 600

Total = $38,649,600
For context, according to Section 25 (6) of the Act, a former-Act company is one that was (a) incorporated under Part I of the former-Act; (b) registered pursuant to section 16 of the former-Act; or (c) incorporated or registered under the Companies Ordinance, 1864 or 1898. Meanwhile, ‘former-Act’ means the Companies Act immediately in force before the commencement of the Companies Act which commencement is dated September 27, 1991.

With greater access to the internet and technology in Guyana following the full liberalisation of the telecommunication sector in 2020, Guyanese businessman Andre Robinson is hoping to help state agencies and businesses to bridge the digital divide.
Through his business – Modernize IT Solutions (MITS) – the tech expert says he is offering “peace of mind” to the users of his services by leveraging an intelligent Wi-Fi system to provide greater security while boosting marketing, advertising and collecting feedback.
And on a more sophisticated level, Robinson is designing robots to be used across Guyana with the aim of improving service delivery in several sectors including healthcare and education.
Robinson left Guyana as a teen and lived for many years in Africa and the United States of America.
With over 20 years’ experience in the technology field and currently serving as an advisor to government agencies in New York and New Jersey on IT solutions, he is hoping to use some of his skillset, experience and knowledge to confront the task of transforming Guyana’s technological landscape to international standards.
Launched in December 2022, the business currently offers an intelligent Wi-Fi system, providing sophisticated levels of security for corporate data and people connected to the Wi-Fi of companies and agencies.
“So currently the services we offer, we have an intelligent Wi-Fi system. So basically, with this system any business that shares their Wi-Fi with their guest, for example a restaurant, it can be used for several purposes but the main purpose is security.
“… because with the Wi-Fi password, if anyone knows the login to get to the backend of the Wi-Fi system, they can get in there and do some malicious activity,” he explained.
The intelligent Wi-Fi system, Robinson says, can also be used by local businesses for marketing, advertising and collecting feedback.
“You can use your Wi-Fi to connect to those people who are using it. So, you make it a process whereby they have to see an ad before they can use the Wi-fi… you can also use it for marketing.
Robinson is also leveraging artificial intelligence and is in the process of designing robots to help with the overall improvement to service delivery.
He believes these bots can help students learn, help doctors educate patients, and customer service agents provide information.
Also, to assist businesses that provide customer services, he proposes the use of a chat companion feature ‘AskLisa’ but said the vision is beyond that level one type of support.
“And it talks to you by the way. We are actually developing a robot right now that actually speaks. So, you can talk to it, you don’t have to type… we will be able to support up to 20 languages.”
According to Robinson, altogether his business is aimed at offering its users peace of mind.
“We have a very big vision… but because we are new, we are starting small… we want to ensure we can maintain quality of service so as we grow, we will expand and bring new services to the market.”
Robinson has joined the advocacy for accessible internet in every part of Guyana and says he stands ready to help Guyanese better manage their affairs and monetize the internet while accessing better security options.
“We (the government) will settle all issues,” Kwame McCoy, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, told residents from communities along the Highway who were gathered at Kuru Kururu for a public consultation on Silica City Tuesday afternoon.
McCoy said even with the Silica City development now in train after a decade of its conceptualisation by President Irfaan Ali, while he served as Minister of Housing, the government’s commitment is to resolve all challenges along the highway with sustained development.
“The highway will be booming in a few years’ time with commercial activities and residential settlements and we will deal with the issue of squatting,” the Minister said.
Noting that there is visible evidence of extended squatting on the highway, he begged for residents’ cooperation in helping the government resolve these issues and said citizens could no longer make situations unmanageable for the State.
“Great opportunities are ahead. Silica City will bring so many opportunities for you and others along the highway.
“Apart from Silica City, we are constructing residential schemes to ensure squatters are regularised,” McCoy said as assured the residents there that they will be equal beneficiaries of the wealth and development to come to Guyana.
McCoy was backed up by Minister within the Minister of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues.
“We are not just talking about Silica City; we are talking about highway development.
“A vision is in place. We just need the cooperation of people and the sky is the limit,” Rodrigues chimed in during her presentation on the project.
She promised that Silica City will be developed in phases with ongoing consultation with nearby residents and farmers.
“… so, people don’t feel their lives will change overnight and they can’t keep up. We want people to be part of the development.
“And the development will not be central to Silica City. There is interest in the entire Highway and we will open new lands that look useless now but will become highly valuable and that’s why a vision is important,” Minister Rodrigues added.
She reminded residents that there will be a highway to link Silica City to the capital – Georgetown and other towns like Linden.
“In a few years, this community will be the envy of the rest of the country,” she said.
In the meantime, she has asked for the cooperation of persons who are squatting on lands for agriculture and residential purposes to support relocation efforts.
Two new wells will be drilled in the area in the coming months to also improve water access and quality.
Rodrigues said the government remains flexible in its negotiations for compensation.
In a bid to grow the pool of youth players who can ideally be developed into international stars, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has committed to supporting the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) with three National Under-19 tournaments.
It will start at the inter-club level from March 31 and then channel into the Inter-County where they would be the 50-Over and Three-Day formats.
Minister Charles Ramson Jr. viewed the age group as the cornerstone for cricket and talent development, and said this is a filter to the National Cricket Academy.
”This is what I consider to be the cornerstone of West Indies cricket,” Minister Ramson Jr. indicated at the National Stadium, Providence, on Tuesday.
He added, “It is the cornerstone for which all West Indian talents throughout the decades have been able to display talent in the territories that puts them on the pathway to becoming West Indian players and international stars.”
According to the Minister, though Guyana has found success in various age groups at the Regional level, the country has not been able to consistently produce players, in recent years, to become world stars.
GCB President, Bissoondyal Singh contended that investment in this age group means the pool of players will expand for future senior squads, and they will look to harness their talents through the academy.
At least 40 clubs, 16 each from Berbice and Demerara and eight from Essequibo, are expected to participate in the first stage of the tournament.
It provides an opportunity for more matches for players to showcase their talent for both county and national selection for the upcoming Regional Under-19 tournament.
Approximately G$6 million has been pledged by the Ministry to the tournaments, and a commitment has been made for it to be done on an annual basis.
