Visiting doctors to perform 10 life-changing surgeries on children this week

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Robbie Rambarran said this programme, which was halted in 2018, will bring relief to patients over the next two years.

“I want to remind each one of us here that what we are embarking on is bigger than any of us and in the best interest of these kids who need a new lease of life and it’s in the best interest of this institution and building capacity and providing the best healthcare,” Rambarran said.

This programme is important because every year at least 150 children are born in Guyana with heart defects. Now children between eight months old and 16 years old will receive world-class treatment from the team.

Through the agreement, the hospital’s staff of nurses were given a six months training programme to learn pre and post-surgery care. In addition, Rambarran said that over $160 million was injected by the hospital into the programme to procure equipment.

According to the foundation’s CEO, Dr Rob Raylman, the foundation will provide all the technical assistance required for the surgeries to be a success.

“So this is building capacity for your doctors and nurses to treat intensively ill children in the near future,” Dr Raylman said.

Upon completing the surgeries, some doctors will return to the United States of America while some supporting staff will remain to monitor the patients.

Man perishes as child playing with matches lead to destruction of two Agricola houses

When the News Room visited the scene, relatives of Trotman said they did not know he was at home when the fire started.

The dead man’s sister, Eulie Trotman said she last saw him Sunday morning.

“I was home and I see the smoke so I seh meh neighbour like he burning rubbish so one ah my friend call and seh ‘Eulie yuh brother house on fire’. So I left and I go around…I see the fire and after I see the crowd and so I come back home,” Eulie said.

“I don’t know if he been in the house or wah. We end up calling meh aunty up the East Coast to see if he went up there and he wasn’t there. So I she he woulda come last night (Sunday night) cause we calling he phone and the phone going to voicemail. I end up sleep away and this morning 3 0’clock I end up wake up and I start cry. And then I seh like he get burn up in the fire…This morning somebody find he. They went and search and they find he,” the woman explained as she broke down in tears.

Meanwhile, another relative, Savannah Graham told the News Room that she found it strange that Trotman did not show up at the scene and after checking for him she learnt of the discovery.

“We just came around and check to see cause he didn’t show up and we know is not like him cause he does always show up at any incidents,” she said.

“We didn’t see anything so we left and went back home and then a friend came and look at the place…went somewhere and then we came back and saw flies. So he just decided to move the wood and duh is how come we discover that a body is there and we say his home,” Graham recalled.

The Guyana Fire Service is advising citizens to exercise caution and follow safety measures to avoid fires. They are also urging persons not to to leave children unattended at home without adult supervision.

My show is called Reggae Voyage is based out of Middletown, Connecticut and the purpose is to educate, inform, inspire and entertain the audience about the rich culture and heritage of our West Indian people on a positive level through music. We have live interviews and reviews of all major events and topics that are a part of the diaspora while promoting talented artists from the CARIBBEAN. About the Author:
Donovan Longmore is an avid entrepreneur who has over 25 years in the entertainment, finance and healthcare industries. Born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica, it was always a pleasure for this music guru to listen and carefully studied on-air personalities. Donovan migrated to the U.S. in the early 80’s with a vision of making Jamaica a better place for all. Surprised at the limited access of Caribbean music on local radio stations, he wanted to make a vast change. Improvements were made as technology and music became more commercialized.

A strong believer in promoting positive ideas and talents, he is the President of Earth Angel Productions – a gospel-based company that promotes gospel talent searches for young people and bring souls to Christ. His tireless efforts have earned him numerous awards over the years. Mr. Longmore was honored by the City of Hartford and Springfield for his leadership role on the Radio and in the communities which he serves. In 2015 he was given an official Citation by the State of Connecticut General Assembly and was recognized for his humanitarian work as an Exceptional Community Service Leader at the Extraordinary People Awards held in Dallas, Texas. He received the “One Hundred Men of Color” Award at the Gala in October 2015 and was given Citations from the cities of Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut respectively. He is a board member of the West Indian Independence Celebrations and Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival; two of the largest festivals in North America that generates over 40,000 people annually. His love for humanity garnered him to be a chairperson for PLOG– a non-profit organization in Ghana, Africa that provides skill training and support for underprivileged children. Mr. Longmore is a speaker/moderator for both International Youth Peace Conference and the Singles Ministry “When destiny meets purpose”.
A loving and devoted father, mentor, tutor, speaker and basketball coach; he credits his mother for teaching him the way of life, “GOD and Family First”. Mr. Longmore passionately believes that all things are possible through Christ. He hosts a radio program entitled “Reggae Voyage” on Saturdays at 8:30 pm on WESU 88.1FM (www.wesufm.org). The purpose of the show is to educate, inspire, inform, and entertain the community while spreading the Love and Culture of the Caribbean through Music and conversations. His passion is to do public speaking for youths, as well as, missionary work and promote programs and educational events that will help improve the lives and conditions of people. Welder refused bail after denying ownership of ‘ganja’

trafficking two kilograms of cannabis.

Akeem Archer, of Zeelugt Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, appeared before City Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Archer denied that on March 16, 2023, at Lombard Street, Charlestown, he had 2.332 kilograms of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

According to Prosecutor Dominic Bess, on the day in question at about 16:30 hours, CANU ranks went to the Lombard Street and contacted Archer.

Archer was seen entering the eastern side of a yard with a back and yellow bag on his back. The bag was searched and several parcels of cannabis were found inside.

The drug carries a street value of approximately $400,000.

Under caution, Archer allegedly told the ranks he was at a car wash when a man gave him the bag to take to a motorcar.

The father of four further told the court that he was released from prison in 2019 after serving a two-year sentence for firearm possession.

He further told the court that he is the sole breadwinner for his family of four and his reputed wife is currently six months pregnant.

The Magistrate, based upon the seriousness and the prevalence of the crime, remanded Archer to prison until April 24.

‘Reliable source of updated info’ – Financial Intelligence Unit relaunches website
https://fiu.gov.gy. The look is however different. The new site was developed by experienced local Website Design and Development Company GxMedia, headed by Mr. Girendra Persaud.

The purpose of offering this new website is to give our local and international stakeholders and the public at large, a dynamic, professional, holistic and modern option and experience when trying to access information about the FIU and the work of the unit.

The website is easy to navigate and provides convenient access to a wide cross section of information and documents relating to the combating of money laundering, terrorism financing and the financing of proliferation, and other related threats, activities and initiatives being conducted by FIU Guyana and its many local and international stakeholders. This includes key pieces of legislation, FIU Annual Reports, Guidelines, Typologies, Publications, News, etc.

The new site seeks to eliminate some of the perceived myths and mysteries about the FIU by introducing the Unit’s Management Team. There is also a direct connection to the caseKonnect platform which is used by most of our Reporting Entities to submit information to the FIU in a safe and secure manner.

Some of the additional features and benefits of the new website include the following:
- Introductory video outlining the role and purpose of FIU Guyana and FIUs around the world.

More training opportunities to ensure young Guyanese become skilled, fill vacancies

The NTPYE is an initiative aimed at equipping Guyanese youths with technical, vocational and entrepreneurial skills, thereby providing them with increased opportunities to secure a livelihood.

During the launch, Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton reminded those who registered of the ‘golden opportunity’ they are receiving and urged them to persevere to the end of the training.

“What you’re embarking on here… it is for you. You can fail all of the other people, but you cannot fail yourself. You can fail your mother, or your father, but how do you fail you? You can’t afford to do that,” he stressed.

He spoke specifically to parents, charging them to capitalise on the opportunities to be good role models for their children.

“The greatest commitment you can make to your children is, ‘I will make sure that the struggles I have had in life, you will not have’. You cannot just say it, you have to make it mean something. And you make it mean something, first by doing the best you can for yourself, so that you can uplift that child, that they will not have the same struggles you did,” Minister Hamilton stated.

He emphasised the need for participants to exercise discipline, citing the concept of delayed gratification.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy, who also attended the launch, encouraged participants to continue pursuing higher education.

“You may have little challenges, let us know. Don’t decide that you will keep it to yourself and you will just drop out…. Let us discuss and see how we can help you step by step, because that is our job, to help you.

“We want you to succeed, every boy and girl, every man and woman across this country… So, it is an investment by your government, as you have heard before, and we will continue to work with you and to make sure that you can develop into the best person possible. We have our role and responsibility. You have a role and responsibility too,” Minister McCoy said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond said the government is heartened with the number of persons who registered.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to the continued support and development of all Guyanese.

“As your government, it is incumbent on us to make sure that the dream of every single Guyanese is realised, that your dreams are fulfilled. That is our responsibility. You are not begging us for anything. Our responsibility is to make sure that you are taken care of and that you can take care of your families,” she noted.

The participants are expected to benefit from training in plumbing, electrical installation, heavy-duty equipment operation, welding, and fabrication, among other technical courses.

Courses in plumbing, carpentry, joinery and masonry will be held at the Sophia Training Centre, while other courses including heavy duty equipment operation and welding will be held at the Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC).

Scintillating Kevin Jeffrey annihilates Group 4 competition at South Dakota GP

Kevin Jeffrey rolled back the years on Sunday, powering his Mitsubishi Evo 8 to a clean sweep of the Group Four category at the South Dakota Grand Prix, staged by the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club.

Aboard the famous ‘Bush Cow’ bearing #161, Jeffrey pulled off three scintillating victories, entertaining patrons with bold driving in a fascinating duel with old-time rival Mark Vieira and his Mazda RX-8.

Jeffrey started the day by qualifying fourth on the grid behind his son Kristian (pole), Andrew King and Lennard Samaroo, but hours later when the sun disappeared in the distance, he was the undisputed king of South Dakota.

After race favourite Kristian encountered mechanical issues in the opening race that prematurely curtailed his day, it was the patriarch of the Jeffrey clan that took matter in his own hands.

Kevin stormed to victory in all three Group Four encounters, staving off a spirited challenge from Vieira, as the duo rekindled a rivalry that has for decades produced countless memorable moments at the country’s lone race track and beyond.

“After a long time, wow,” Kevin told News Room Sport after his three from three.

It was “surreal” feeling for the veteran driver, who highlighted that at the start of the day a third place finish would have given him satisfaction.

“In my mind, I said Kristian and Mark are going to dominate; I would be the bridesmaid.”

The defining moment of the day, Kevin related, was the race two when he claimed Vieira “jumped the start” and the race had to re-run.

“After the false start in the second race, something happened and I said ‘this is it.’ We’re either racing fair or we not racing at all.”

According to Kevin, that was the moment that “awoken the beast” in him.

“I didn’t spend one day in the car (in the lead-up), because I was not really in race mode. Everybody you talked to before (race day) would say I’m ready to graze in the pasture, I’m ready to retire. But I think Mark kinda light some fire under me after that second race,” Kevin said.

The veteran race car driver was modesty personified after his exploits, showering praises on his mechanical team for facilitating a perfect day of racing.

“These guys worked tirelessly. This was a total team effort- I was just the pilot. In a long time we didn’t see the ‘Cow’ working like this, but I don’t take any of the credit for it, it’s the crew,” Kevin asserted.

Also turning in dominant performances were Azaad Hassan with a clean sweep of the Sport Tuner category and Stephen Vieira with two victories and a second place finish in the Superbikes.

F1: Alonso’s podium reinstated after demotion overturned

had been dropped to fourth after it was ruled his team had worked on the car while he was serving a five-second penalty.

But his team successfully argued there were previous examples of drivers not being penalised in such circumstances.

The stewards agreed and overturned their original verdict.

It was the end of a confusing set of events that Alonso had earlier labelled a “poor FIA show” when he believed he had been demoted from the podium to fourth behind Mercedes driver George Russell in a race won by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

Alonso’s initial five-second penalty was for not placing his car correctly in its grid slot at the start of the race.

He served this at his pit stop on lap 18 but was penalised a further 10 seconds by stewards at the end of the race when they ruled the rear jack touching his car before the five seconds had elapsed constituted “working” on it.

Aston Martin presented minutes from a recent meeting of F1’s sporting advisory group (SAG), which discussed seven different instances of cars being touched by the jack in such a way without being penalised.

Aston Martin argued there had been an agreement between teams and the governing body that it was “incorrect” to rule that “an agreement between the FIA and the teams that touching the car in any way, including with a jack, would constitute ‘working’ on the car”.

The stewards accepted they had been mistaken.

An FIA spokesperson said there were “conflicting precedents, and this has been exposed by this specific circumstance”, and a clarification would be issued before the next race in Australia following a meeting of the SAG.

Alonso also complained that it took too long to be told of the second penalty – and had he been, he would have been able to drive faster to make up the required time deficit.

He had already done this to ensure he was five seconds ahead of Russell when it became apparent late in the race that he might receive a second penalty, but on the assumption this would be five seconds, not 10.

“They told me I had a five-second penalty so I pushed a little bit harder and I opened seven seconds and I paid the penalty,” he said, before the punishment was reversed.

“In the second stint, there was no investigation, no information, nothing. If someone had told me, ‘You have 10 secs’, I’d have opened 11 secs.”

Alonso added: “Today is not good for the fans. When you take 35 laps to apply a penalty and to inform about the penalty and you inform after the podium, there’s something really wrong in the system. It is a bit sad for the FIA.”

Russell, whose final position has been put back to fourth, said he believed both penalties were too harsh for the offences in question.

“I understand why these rules are there,” he said. “At the end of the day, we’ve got to stick within the guidelines. But I think a little bit of common sense needs to be shown.

“Ultimately, I think he was a bit to the left [on the grid], was that right? He gained nothing from this. Perhaps a five-second [penalty] is too much.

“And then with regards to his pit stop again, I don’t know what happened and why he received the further penalty exactly. But a 10-second is too extreme in that case again.”

Alonso accepted he had made a mistake in positioning his car, but Russell and race-winner Perez agreed that a lack of visibility from the cockpit was a problem.

Perez said: “I just overdid it and I stopped too early, but you have no idea when you are in the car. You don’t know if you went too far or from behind or too far forward.

“We need better visibility to be able to come up with a better idea than we currently have it. It’s good that there is a rule in place, but at the same time, sometimes it’s like luck, to be honest, where you position yourself.” (BBC Sport)

Stanleytown man dies after run over by car

Kelston Ferreira, a resident of Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara (WBD), died on Saturday night after he was ran over by a car on the Stanleytown Public Road.

Police Headquarters reported that Ferreira, who was allegedly intoxicated, was lying on the northern side of the road when a hire car (HD 2943) was driven over him at around 22:30 hrs Saturday.

The car was driven by Kristoff Pollydore, a 33-year-old of Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara; it is owned by Shivanand Ramkissoon of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.

At the time of the accident, Pollydore was driving east, along the northern side of the public road. The vehicle’s left side, front wheel ran over Ferreira.

The man’s body was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. Ferreira was later pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.

The body is awaiting an autopsy at the Ezekiel Funeral Home. Meanwhile, the driver is in custody assisting with investigations.
