Ashes 2025: ECB investigating Ben Duckett video amid drinking allegations

The England and Wales Cricket (ECB) is seeking to verify a video that appears to show England‘s Ben Duckett drunk and unable to find his way back to the team hotel during the squad’s mini-break to Noosa between the second and third Ashes Tests.

The video emerged on X- formerly known as Twitter- on Tuesday, hours after men’s managing director Rob Key confirmed there would be an investigation into the trip to the Sunshine Coast resort town, which followed an eight-wicket defeat in Brisbane that put them 2-0 down in the series.

The four days in Noosa, which the ECB stressed was not a holiday, had been organised a year in advance by head coach Brendon McCullum, who believed it would refresh the players. A number of the squad leaned into the time-off, with no training scheduled during this period.

While England went on to put in their best showing of the tour in Adelaide, they succumbed to an 82-run defeat as Australia took an unassailable lead in the five-match series, retaining the Ashes inside just 11 days.

Speaking at the MCG ahead of the fourth Test in Melbourne, which begins on Friday, Key said he would look into the trip but believed the players had been “very well behaved”.

A statement from the ECB read: “We are aware of content circulating on social media.

“We have high expectations for behaviour, accepting that players are often under intense levels of scrutiny, with established processes that we follow when conduct falls below expectations. We also support players that need assistance.

“We will not comment further at this stage while we establish the facts.”

Having been one of England’s more reliable batters, Duckett has had a tough Ashes series with just 97 runs at an average of 16.16 putting him bottom of the tourists’ specialist batters on both metrics, with a top score of 29.

The 31-year-old has also had previous on Ashes tours. Eight years ago, while part of the Lions squad for the 2017-18 series, he was sent home with a fine and suspension by the ECB for pouring a drink over James Anderson in the Avenue Bar in Perth. (ESPNcricinfo)

“It was indeed heartening observe the collective push in the same direction,” Ninvalle said.

The championship brought together the country’s leading gyms and boxers across schoolboy, youth, junior and elite divisions, delivering three days of keenly contested bouts and high-level performances.

Individual accolades were spread across several gyms, reflecting the growing depth of talent within the sport.

The gym also celebrated Ken Harvey, who captured the Best Youth Boxer award following a series of commanding performances.

In the junior ranks, Kurt Mahase of the New Amsterdam Boxing Association was adjudged Best Junior Boxer, rewarding his consistency and technical sharpness throughout the tournament.

The elite division produced some of the weekend’s most compelling action. Emmanuel Pompey of the Forgotten Youth Foundation was crowned Elite Best Boxer, while teammate Abiola Jackman walked away with the Best Female Boxer award, highlighting the foundation’s continued impact in developing both male and female fighters at the senior level.

National Champion and Olympian Keevin Allicock added a special touch to the championship, making contributions of trophies and hampers on behalf of MVP Sports, Smalta and Jai Signs.

His involvement was warmly received and served as inspiration for the younger boxers aspiring to follow his path onto the international stage.

In a post-tournament release, the GBA noted that the championship officially bring the curtains down on what it described as a busy and productive year for the association.

The body expressed satisfaction with the overall level of competition, stating that the performances on display reflected the hard work and commitment shown by gyms throughout the year.

  • Top Cop urges CID ranks to provide updates until cases conclude

Top Cop urges CID ranks to provide updates until cases conclude

Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken urged ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to continuously provide updates on reports so members of the public are kept informed from the start of an investigation until its conclusion.

Speaking at the CID Annual Award Ceremony, Commissioner Hicken emphasised that once a report is taken, it is the responsibility of CID ranks to ensure continuous communication with the affected parties.

“If you are dealing with a matter, you must inform the person of the status of the matter until its conclusion.

“You cannot take a report from somebody and then they are running to the station to find out what is going on with the report. CID you ought to be the most brilliant in the organisation from the constables right up,” the Top Cop stated.

He reminded CID ranks that they play a critical role within the Guyana Police Force, describing them as the officers who move “stepping stone by stone, stage by stage” behind those being investigated. Commissioner Hicken further noted that CID work differs significantly from general police duties, as investigations are sometimes required to work 24/7.

Addressing detectives, particularly young and junior ranks, Commissioner Hicken cautioned against poor investigative practices. He warned that failing to properly manage a case can result in it collapsing in court, damaging not only the matter at hand but also the image of the entire Police Force.

“If we are serving 99 per cent, that one per cent that we fail to give will tarnish the image of the organisation,” he stated.

Commissioner Hicken also called on the CID to place greater focus on operations, and while acknowledging ongoing efforts, he said more work must be done to strengthen results. Professionalism and education were also highlighted as key areas for improvement.

The Commissioner reiterated the need for CID ranks to upskill themselves academically, warning that without proper training and education, officers may struggle to effectively process information during investigations and interviews. In this regard, he announced plans for a new training programme that will select 30 of the most outstanding ranks to undergo specialised detective training.
He further cautioned ranks about their conduct during public engagements, reminding them that unprofessional conduct can result in disciplinary action or rotation.

In recognition of the hard work and dedication of CID ranks, Commissioner Hicken donated $500,000 to the department. Queensway Security also donated $500,000 to the CID.

  • Nineteen farmers benefit from heifers to boost dairy production

Nineteen farmers benefit from heifers to boost dairy production

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Monday handed over dairy stock to farmers as part of the Government of Guyana’s continued efforts to strengthen and expand the country’s dairy industry.

Nineteen farmers benefited from the first phase of the initiative, which forms part of a broader programme aimed at improving genetics, increasing milk production, and building a competitive livestock sector.

While addressing the gathering, Minister Mustapha said that over the last five years, the government has made significant advances across multiple aspects of the livestock industry, emphasizing the importance of integrated agricultural systems to ensure sustainability and profitability for farmers.

“We have expended over $110 million to conduct 300 embryo transplants. This set of animals here, these are considered dairy animals. So, as you know, we want to improve the beef and dairy sectors,” Minister Mustapha said.

He noted that the embryo transplant programme represents a historic milestone for Guyana, complementing the ongoing artificial insemination initiative and significantly improving the genetic quality of livestock nationwide.

“Now, for the first time in the history of our country, we have started a new programme called embryo transplant. We have had the artificial insemination programme, which, through critical investments, has also increased over the years,” the Minister explained.

Minister Mustapha further stressed that farmers must avoid a narrow approach to production and instead recognize the interdependence of crop and livestock development.

“We are developing our agriculture sector in every area. We want the livestock sector to be very robust, resilient, and competitive in both the beef and dairy industries. Over the last five years, we’ve increased budgetary allocation to this sector,” he said.

“When we produce crops like corn and soya, you as farmers will benefit because when you look at the livestock sector, when we produce more corn and soya, you will get feed at a cheaper cost. This is why, as farmers, you cannot have tunnel vision in this industry,” Minister Mustapha explained.

During the engagement, the Minister also informed farmers that Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) is partnering with an international company to establish a modern dairy processing plant at Moblissa. He disclosed that the facility is approximately 90 per cent completed and will play a critical role in expanding Guyana’s dairy value chain.

In addition to the dairy animals, farmers also received soilage to support improved feeding systems and sustainable livestock production.

The animals handed over can be referred to as seed stock and are products of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority’s sex embryo transplant programme, under which only female embryos were implanted. The programme has recorded a zero-mortality rate, reflecting the effectiveness of the technology and the high standard of veterinary oversight.

Minister Mustapha also highlighted parallel initiatives within the small ruminant sector, aimed at reducing imports and positioning Guyana as a regional supplier of quality livestock products.

“We’ve also embarked on a programme to develop a new brand in the small ruminant sector. We want to create a special Black Belly brand of mutton coming out of this part of the hemisphere. We have collaborated with Barbados, and so far, approximately 500 farmers in the small ruminant industry have already been given animals and other forms of assistance so that they can increase their stock,” he noted.

In a few years, he explained, Guyana will be able to replace the brands of mutton coming from New Zealand and Australia. He also said that through targeted investments, Guyana is also on the path to becoming a net exporter to the CARICOM market (Ministry of Agriculture press release)
