Bartica girl in fearless pursuit of women’s advocacy award, pageant title

Shanae Heber on outreach for the pageant

“I think the award focuses on influential women leaders, women that are using their platform to bring about change…I believe that I represent a generation of women that are working assiduously to break barriers that are attached to us,” Heber said.

Heber started studying for her Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering without much knowledge about the field. She explained that she applied for the programme immediately after graduating from secondary school. Soon after, she became passionate about being at the forefront of the country’s new resources.

Heber at her graduation from the University of Guyana

“At that time it was a newfound resource in Guyana and I wanted to take up space in this industry because it was male-dominated.

“When I started the programme I fell in love with it and now everything that I want to do is specifically oil and gas,” Heber said.

In addition to studying oil and gas, Heber is studying Business Administration at the Texila American University. She is also part of the Girl Build Girl foundation which gave her the first glimpse into women’s empowerment. At the time she was living in Bartica and after moving to Georgetown, she realised that the livelihood of not only her peers but women can be much more than what is expected of them.

Her advice for young women is that, “you have the potential and you have got to be able to harness that potential not only for yourself but also so us girls are seen as transformational leaders and powerful sources of development.”

Heber said her mother was a designer for the very pageant she will compete in during Easter Weekend. She intended to compete in 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was cancelled.

Heber wants to focus on her hometown and ensure that the girls living there can benefit from opportunities that are offered not only within the oil and gas sector but in every social aspect as well. As she competes in the pageant, her platform will be the impact teenage pregnancy plays on the development of young women.

NDIA tackles flooding along Main Street

Following continuous rainfall across Georgetown on Monday, a section of Main Street Avenue was flooded from Middle Street to Church Street.

Engineers attached to the Ministry of Agriculture’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) visited the location to conduct an assessment and discovered that a tunnel located beneath the roadway from Main Street to Church Street was blocked.

As a result, the drainage authority intervened by deploying resources and commenced clearing the tunnel to mitigate flooding, an activity that should’ve been undertaken by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council. These efforts will continue in the coming days.

It should be noted that the maintenance of this system is the responsibility of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown but given the urgency and severity of the situation, the NDIA will undertake works to bring relief to affected residents of Georgetown.

Linden All-Stars retain Rawle Toney 3×3 Classic title

Stanton Rose Jr. was named the Rawle Toney 3×3 Classic MVP and received one Motorcycle and G$50,000

However, Dominic Vincente, Oqaucey Shortt, Nikkoloi Smith and Ryan Stephney had other plans when they faced the USA team in the first semi-finals.

Former ‘pro baller’ Haron Hargrave was lighting the tournament up with his sniper-like aim along with Marcin Termena.

Birchell Glenn and Kelvin Fraser were the USA team’s muscle in the tournament, but the GT Ballers team wanted to ensure that the championship trophy and the G$400,000 from Team Mohamed’s remained in the ‘Land of Many Waters.’

The Guyanese men battled to a 21-14 win over the Americans, while the tournament’s eventual winners, Linden All-Stars, made light work of Bullets in their semi-finals, winning 21-7.

Ballin4Peace didn’t leave empty-handed; they finished third and pocketed G$100,000, compliments of VSH Guyana Inc.

Business Development Officer of Century Tamara Logistics Services Inc., Varshnie Rampersaud, was on hand to present Linden All-Stars with their championship rings. The oil and gas logistics company teamed up with Jacobs Jewellery for this year’s first-place incentive.

Stanton Rose Jr. was named tournament MVP and pocketed G$50,000 from Signature Moves Marketing Agency. The company is owned by former National basketball player Steve Neils Jr. and his wife, Ulex Smith-Neils.

Rose will also be riding back to Region 10 on a motorcycle, thanks to Rock Auto Trans and Spares.

“I was more than pleased with the outcome and the success of this year’s tournament. I think it was almost perfect, and that’s all thanks to the players and officials,” Toney said.

Suriname FIBA-accredited referees Harold Meinzak and Mitchell Zeefuik, according to Toney, raised the profile of officiating in the tournament.

“Over the couple years of the tournament, officiating was a sour point, so I invested to bring referees in. GBF president Michael Singh made contact with his Suriname counterparts and they identified two of their best officials to complement what we have in Guyana. The players hardly had any complaints and everything went smooth,” Toney said.

Toney thanked ENet, MVP Sports, Cole’s Screen Printing, Star Party Rentals, HJ 94.1FM, Germans Restaurant, Slingerz Family Entertainment, Shi-Oil, Trophy Stall and Nel Global Security Company Inc. for coming on board and helping to make the 2023 edition a success.

  • Guyana receives 4,800 more paediatric Pfizer vaccines

Guyana receives 4,800 more paediatric Pfizer vaccines

COVAX, co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi and the World Health Organisation (WHO), alongside key delivery partner UNICEF, aims to accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines and to guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world.

The vaccines will be used to immunise children ages five to 11 against COVID-19.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Narine Singh received the donation from the Non-Resident Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain, Fernando Nogales. PAHO’s representative, Dr Luis Codina was also present at the event.

“I would like to thank the government and also PAHO, for facilitating this donation of the vaccine. This is only part of the donation, we know we have the adult doses that are on their way,” Dr Narine expressed, at the simple handing-over ceremony.

Maternal and Child Health Officer and Immunisation Manager at the ministry, Dr Oneka Scott said the vaccines have arrived at the opportune time.

“We’ve seen that the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines has been encouraging, considering that we’re at the tail end of the pandemic. What is important to understand in a pandemic, is that we cannot ever down our guard because that is when we’re at risk again,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Nogales said his government is always happy to contribute to Guyana’s fight against COVID-19.

“I’m very happy and I am proud because Spain is now the second largest vaccine donor in the region, but nothing could be possible if not for the policy of the Government of Guyana, that despite the odds … made a huge effort to underline how important vaccination is,” the ambassador noted.

The health ministry will soon receive 8,640 bivalent vaccines through the COVAX mechanism. (Extracted and modified from DPI)

Teen dies after tyre explodes at Linden vulcanizing shop

A young man who worked at Johnson’s Mechanic Shop at Kara Kara, Linden lost his life during a workplace accident on Monday.

Reports are that the man, identified as 19-year-old Joshown Goddard, was filling a tyre with air when it exploded.

Police Headquarters in a statement noted that his ranks are investigating an incident that resulted in the death of Goddard. The incident occurred at around 1.20 pm yesterday.

According to Maverline Johnson, a 69-year-old residing at Old Kara Kara, Goddard was a family friend employed as a labourer in her family’s vulcanizing shop for the past year.

Johnson stated that yesterday she was upstairs in her home while her granddaughter Feneta Johnson, a 25-year-old, was inside the ‘wash bay’ about 30 meters from the workshop. Goddard was in the ‘tyre shop’ attending to a truck tyre when Johnson said she heard a loud explosion from the vulcanizing shop.

The woman said she looked through her window and heard her granddaughter scream.

Johnson said she rushed into the workshop and observed Goddard lying motionless with a wound to his neck and what appeared to be blood oozing.

The matter was reported to the police and when ranks arrived on the scene, the body was observed to be in a pool of blood, clad in short black pants, a green jersey and black slippers. The body was examined, and a gaping wound was seen in the centre region of the neck. Several tyres, rims and tyre shop tools were discovered around the body.

The body was escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex and pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. The body is presently lying at a mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Robbie Rambarran said this programme, which was halted in 2018, will bring relief to patients over the next two years.

“I want to remind each one of us here that what we are embarking on is bigger than any of us and in the best interest of these kids who need a new lease of life and it’s in the best interest of this institution and building capacity and providing the best healthcare,” Rambarran said.

This programme is important because every year at least 150 children are born in Guyana with heart defects. Now children between eight months old and 16 years old will receive world-class treatment from the team.

Through the agreement, the hospital’s staff of nurses were given a six months training programme to learn pre and post-surgery care. In addition, Rambarran said that over $160 million was injected by the hospital into the programme to procure equipment.

According to the foundation’s CEO, Dr Rob Raylman, the foundation will provide all the technical assistance required for the surgeries to be a success.

“So this is building capacity for your doctors and nurses to treat intensively ill children in the near future,” Dr Raylman said.

Upon completing the surgeries, some doctors will return to the United States of America while some supporting staff will remain to monitor the patients.

Man perishes as child playing with matches lead to destruction of two Agricola houses

The remains of the two houses that were destroyed in a fire at Agricola.

When the News Room visited the scene, relatives of Trotman said they did not know he was at home when the fire started.

The dead man’s sister, Eulie Trotman said she last saw him Sunday morning.

“I was home and I see the smoke so I seh meh neighbour like he burning rubbish so one ah my friend call and seh ‘Eulie yuh brother house on fire’. So I left and I go around…I see the fire and after I see the crowd and so I come back home,” Eulie said.

“I don’t know if he been in the house or wah. We end up calling meh aunty up the East Coast to see if he went up there and he wasn’t there. So I she he woulda come last night (Sunday night) cause we calling he phone and the phone going to voicemail. I end up sleep away and this morning 3 0’clock I end up wake up and I start cry. Meanwhile, another relative, Savannah Graham told the News Room that she found it strange that Trotman did not show up at the scene and after checking for him she learnt of the discovery.

“We just came around and check to see cause he didn’t show up and we know is not like him cause he does always show up at any incidents,” she said.

“We didn’t see anything so we left and went back home and then a friend came and look at the place…went somewhere and then we came back and saw flies. So he just decided to move the wood and duh is how come we discover that a body is there and we say his home,” Graham recalled.

The Guyana Fire Service is advising citizens to exercise caution and follow safety measures to avoid fires. They are also urging persons not to to leave children unattended at home without adult supervision.

    The Top 200 Reggae Songs From 1962 – 2022

Jamaica gained independence in 1962 and about that time reggae music emerged. Reggae music has influenced the world and even started a few other genres of music. Over the years on my Saturday radio show, Reggae Voyage With Madman Donovan, on WESU 88.1FM, I compiled a list of songs from requests from listeners and past top songs lists. Here is a year by year rundown of The Top 100 Reggae Songs From 1962 – 2022.

    About My Radio Show:
My show is called Reggae Voyage is based out of Middletown, Connecticut and the purpose is to educate, inform, inspire and entertain the audience about the rich culture and heritage of our West Indian people on a positive level through music. We have live interviews and reviews of all major events and topics that are a part of the diaspora while promoting talented artists from the CARIBBEAN. The show airs on WESU 88.1fm Saturdays from 8-10pm. Listen live at www.wesufm.org.

    About the Author:
Donovan Longmore is an avid entrepreneur who has over 25 years in the entertainment, finance and healthcare industries. Born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica, it was always a pleasure for this music guru to listen and carefully studied on-air personalities. Donovan migrated to the U.S. in the early 80’s with a vision of making Jamaica a better place for all. Surprised at the limited access of Caribbean music on local radio stations, he wanted to make a vast change. Improvements were made as technology and music became more commercialized.

A strong believer in promoting positive ideas and talents, he is the President of Earth Angel Productions – a gospel-based company that promotes gospel talent searches for young people and bring souls to Christ. His tireless efforts have earned him numerous awards over the years. Mr. Longmore was honored by the City of Hartford and Springfield for his leadership role on the Radio and in the communities which he serves. In 2015 he was given an official Citation by the State of Connecticut General Assembly and was recognized for his humanitarian work as an Exceptional Community Service Leader at the Extraordinary People Awards held in Dallas, Texas. He received the “One Hundred Men of Color” Award at the Gala in October 2015 and was given Citations from the cities of Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut respectively. He is a board member of the West Indian Independence Celebrations and Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival; two of the largest festivals in North America that generates over 40,000 people annually. His love for humanity garnered him to be a chairperson for PLOG– a non-profit organization in Ghana, Africa that provides skill training and support for underprivileged children. Mr. Longmore is a speaker/moderator for both International Youth Peace Conference and the Singles Ministry “When destiny meets purpose”.
A loving and devoted father, mentor, tutor, speaker and basketball coach; he credits his mother for teaching him the way of life, “GOD and Family First”. Mr. Longmore passionately believes that all things are possible through Christ. He hosts a radio program entitled “Reggae Voyage” on Saturdays at 8:30 pm on WESU 88.1FM (www.wesufm.org). The purpose of the show is to educate, inspire, inform, and entertain the community while spreading the Love and Culture of the Caribbean through Music and conversations. His passion is to do public speaking for youths, as well as, missionary work and promote programs and educational events that will help improve the lives and conditions of people. Mr. Longmore and his wife Jackie are putting together a non-profit organization to help needy children in Jamaica. This is part of his marketing concept that was created in an effort of making for a Better World through healing, skilled training, media, business, music, fashion, sports, movies, education, and social networking. In May of 2017, Mr. Longmore hosted the 5th Annual Miss Plus Size Universe International Pageant taking place in Trinidad & Tobago. He will receive another Humanitarian and Community leader award in September 2017 from DEEDEE Entertainment in Maryland.

Welder refused bail after denying ownership of ‘ganja’

    trafficking two kilograms of cannabis.

Akeem Archer, of Zeelugt Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, appeared before City Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Archer denied that on March 16, 2023, at Lombard Street, Charlestown, he had 2.332 kilograms of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

According to Prosecutor Dominic Bess, on the day in question at about 16:30 hours, CANU ranks went to the Lombard Street and contacted Archer.

Archer was seen entering the eastern side of a yard with a back and yellow bag on his back. The bag was searched and several parcels of cannabis were found inside.

The drug carries a street value of approximately $400,000.

Under caution, Archer allegedly told the ranks he was at a car wash when a man gave him the bag to take to a motorcar.

The father of four further told the court that he was released from prison in 2019 after serving a two-year sentence for firearm possession.

He further told the court that he is the sole breadwinner for his family of four and his reputed wife is currently six months pregnant.

The Magistrate, based upon the seriousness and the prevalence of the crime, remanded Archer to prison until April 24.
