One person injured after New Amsterdam fire

A 20-year-old man was injured on Tuesday afternoon after a fire, likely caused by a gas bottle explosion, ripped through a house in New Amsterdam, Berbice.

The house belongs to Ishmael King, 48, who operates as a roadside vendor in New Amsterdam. It is a three-bedroom wooden and concrete structure; King lived there with his two sons, aged 20 and 16.

King told the News Room that around 14:00 hrs he received a distressing phone call. He rushed home to find his house engulfed in flames. Upon further investigation, his 20-year-old son informed him that he had been cooking, and it appeared as though the gas bottle had exploded, igniting a fire that quickly spread throughout their home. At the time of the incident, his 16-year-old son was not present.

King stated that his son sustained injuries to his feet, hands, and back. The young man is currently at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital receiving care for his burns.

“I thank God that he is still alive; I know these things do happen. I give thanks that I am even alive,” the man said.

He noted that the fire destroyed all their possessions, including important documents. He also mentioned that he lost $250,000 in cash savings in the fire. He estimated his losses to be in the millions.

“My next move is to do what I know best: give God praise, and continue selling my greens. I don’t know where the money will come from, but I believe in faith,” King told the News Room.

Speed cameras now monitor illegal third-lane driving

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in partnership with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), has introduced a new enforcement capability under the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) that automatically detects and flags illegal third-lane driving, a dangerous practice that has long contributed to congestion and public frustration across the country’s roadways.

Using upgraded SRIS video analytics, the system now identifies vehicles that misuse inside lanes to bypass traffic. The technology captures high-definition video evidence, including vehicle speed, lane position, and license plate information, which will be used as evidence by the GPF to pursue dangerous driving charges.

For years, members of the public have raised concerns about motorists abusing turning lanes to create an illegal “third lane,” especially during high-traffic periods. This behaviour not only causes collisions and near-misses but also significantly increases gridlock for law-abiding road users.

The new enforcement feature directly responds to these complaints by giving officers reliable, real-time evidence to act decisively and consistently.

The SRIS platform currently monitors more than 100 lanes of traffic, with additional locations scheduled for implementation in the coming months. By leveraging automated detection, the system enhances the GPF’s ability to enforce traffic laws without requiring officers to be physically present at every intersection.

“This upgrade is another step toward a safer, more disciplined traffic environment,” Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh noted. “Technology allows us to enforce fairly and effectively, while reducing congestion and improving the daily commute for thousands of Guyanese.”

This deployment forms part of a broader national effort to modernise traffic management using smart, data-driven systems. The GPF encourages all motorists to exercise caution, follow designated lanes, and support the ongoing efforts to build a safer, more efficient road network (Press release)

‘Our skies are open for growth’- President Ali says as first aviation cadet programme launched

Guyana has launched the region’s first-ever Air Transport Cadet Programme, a major step aimed at transforming the future of aviation across the Caribbean.

The initiative introduced on Tuesday by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), International Air Cadet Training Ltd (iACT), Air Cadets Guyana and the University of Guyana, forms part of the ICAO Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Plus (NGAP+) Programme.

The programme targets youths ages 11 to 16 through extracurricular aviation studies, while those 16 and older will progress into vocational and professional training. It is designed to build a sustainable and highly skilled workforce for the region’s rapidly expanding aviation sector.

Delivering the keynote address at the launch, President Dr Irfaan Ali, said the programme is nothing short of a strategic national mission.

“This initiative is not one by accident or chance. It is clearing a new flight path for our nation’s future,” he said.

Calling the initiative a cornerstone of Guyana’s aviation ambitions, he said the country is already accelerating.

“Guyana’s aviation sector is cleared for takeoff and is poised for a steep but safe climb.

“Together, we are building a crew for a journey of national transformation,” Dr Ali said.

Promising widespread, inclusive benefits as the domestic aviation network expands, the President Ali vowed that development would reach every corner of the country.

“No region, no community will be left on the tarmac of progress. Our mission is to link urban to rural and rural to hinterland, not just by road or river, but by the most powerful connector of all- the air,” Dr Ali said.

However, he stressed that the expansion demand a new generation of homegrown aviation talent, from freight forwarders to flight operations specialists.

“A lot of cargo is going to be moved  and we will need freight forwarders and logistics professionals. This is not a side project, this is a strategic national investment. “We are here to cultivate a new core of professionals,” he said.

Dr. Ali urged young people to seize the moment.

“You are not entering a stagnant industry; you are catching the wave of its greatest growth,” he added.

Addressing the first cohort of cadets directly, President Ali offered both encouragement and a challenge.

Meanwhile, iACT Chief Executive Officer,  Malcolm Evans, said Guyana is setting the pace for the entire region.

“This initiative is a pivotal point for Guyana’s aviation sector.

“It will help deliver the President’s vision and will be the first programme to bring to CARICOM and South America the latest ICAO standards, turning them into actions others can come, see and learn from,” Evans said.

GPL CEO promises stable electricity for Christmas season

Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc., Kesh Nandlall, has given the assurance of a reliable electricity supply throughout the Christmas holidays, noting that the company is in a strong position to meet seasonal demand.

Nandlall explained that GPL has been carrying out extensive maintenance across its network in recent weeks and while he apologised for the inconvenience, he also stressed that these activities were necessary to ensure a dependable power supply during the festive period.

“We have been doing a lot of maintenance work and which requires some amount of outages and we apologise for that. We need to do these maintenance works so that we can have reliable power and distribution for the holiday season,” Nandlall told reporters during a recent engagement.

The CEO highlighted that GPL’s highest annual demand typically occurs around September and October. This year, the peak demand reached 221 megawatts.

“Right now we have available in the system, reliably about 250 megawatts.  Christmas is not really our peak and that is something we need to clarify, the peak is in the hot season which is September – October,” Nandlall explained.

Looking ahead, he noted that the highest demand during the holiday period usually falls on Old Year’s Night. GPL projects that this year’s holiday peak will fall between 210 and 250 megawatts, well within the company’s available generation capacity.

“So from a generation perspective, we are in a very comfortable position,” Nandlall stated.

  • Prosecutors urge Magistrate Court to see as ‘frivolous and vexatious’ Mohameds’ bid to stall extradition

Prosecutors urge Magistrate Court to see as ‘frivolous and vexatious’ Mohameds’ bid to stall extradition

Prosecutors have urged Guyana’s principal magistrate, Judy Latchman, to dismiss as “frivolous and vexatious” a constitutional challenge by businessmen Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed, arguing that the extradition case against them should proceed to its legal conclusion before any rights claims are heard.

The Magistrate is due to decide on Wednesday.

The Mohameds, through their attorneys, have referred to Article 153(3) of Guyana’s Constitution to seek an early referral to the High Court, claiming a breach of fundamental rights during the magistrate’s inquiry.

Justice Jo-Ann Barlow, in a previous case, had already ruled that a Magistrate can properly handle an extradition case and that questions about the violation of rights, including personal liberty, can then be challenged in the High Court. In fact, she had noted that Article 139(1) of the Constitution of Guyana itself allows deprivation of personal liberty for purposes of lawful extradition or removal. Therefore, as per her ruling, extradition does not automatically violate that right.

The prosecutors for the U.S., which wants the Mohameds in their court for a range of charges, including wire fraud and money laundering, argue that after a person is committed by a Magistrate court, the aggrieved party can file a habeas corpus review by the High Court and any appeals on points of law. Therefore, the prosecutors say for the Mohameds to argue issues regarding constitutional rights, is premature and an abuse of process.

“The application is frivolous and vexatious because first of all there are no real constitutional issues and they certainly do not arise for consideration at this time.

“First, because many of these rights which they rely on expressly exclude extradition from consideration and also because the magistrate has a certain duty to perform and the duty that she has to perform does not include the considerations that the defendants have raised,” said Terrence Williams, one of the prosecutors.

The argument for the Mohameds hangs on the legality of Guyana’s 2009 amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Act, which allow the Minister of Home Affairs to approve extradition even where older treaties lack express protections against re-extradition to third countries.

Prosecutors said Parliament enacted the amendments to correct a flawed 2008 court ruling and restore Guyana’s treaty obligations to the United States. They relied on earlier Court of Appeal decisions holding that the so-called “specialty rule” is a matter between states and that fugitives have no standing to challenge it.

The defence, however, argued that the amendments are unconstitutional, claiming they hand unchecked power to the executive, undermine judicial independence and violate multiple fundamental rights, including liberty, fair trial guarantees and equality before the law.

Lawyers for the Mohameds are relying on the 2008 Barry Dataram that blocked extradition because the 1931 UK-US treaty has no clause preventing re-extradition to third countries.

But the prosecutors argued that the ruling was legally wrong and contradicted the higher Court of Appeal authority, and Parliament fixed the problem in 2009 by amending the Fugitive Offenders Act.

The amendments dictated that even if a treaty does not expressly include a protection against third-country re-extradition if the Minister decides it is in the “interest of justice.”

The prosecution argued that extradition is a matter between countries and that only Guyana, not the accused, can complain if the United States breaches treaty obligations.
