A Sergeant attached to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is currently hospitalised nursing multiple injuries about his body after he was involved in an accident at Tucville, Georgetown, on Friday.

The Guyana Police Force did not name the injured rank, who they said is attached to the Brickdam Impact Base.

According to a Police report, the crash, which occurred about around 12:30 hrs, involved Force ATV CR 6202, driven by the Sergeant, and motor lorry GAG 7559, which was being operated by a Cuban national.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the Police ATV was heading west along Lama Street when the motor lorry, which was travelling in the opposite direction, allegedly swerved into its path.

However, it appears as though the ATV swerved into the lorry based on CCTV footage of the incident.

Nevertheless, the accident resulted in a collision that threw the Sergeant onto the roadway, causing injuries about his body.

He was picked up in a conscious condition and taken to the Guyana Fire Service Headquarters.

The injured rank was later transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he is currently admitted with a suspected fractured left leg and other injuries.

Police said the Cuban national who was driving the motor lorry was into custody, and the vehicle has been lodged at the East La Penitence Police Station.

Investigations are ongoing.

Forty-four-year-old Julius Mandella Haniff is now dead after he allegedly lost control of the car he was driving and crashed into a utility pole along with Good Hope Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

The accident occurred around 03:38 hrs Friday.

Police Headquarters reported that investigations revealed that Haniff, a resident of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, was driving motorcar, PAG 9310, west along the southern lane of the road when he lost control on the wet roadway due to rainfall.

“The car subsequently crashed into a concrete utility pole on the southern grass parapet,” Police said.

A woman, Yurajwatie Hussain, 39, who is currently pregnant, was also in the car.

Both occupants sustained injuries and were pulled from the wreck by public-spirited citizens. They were rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital.

Hussain was examined and later discharged while Haniff’s condition worsen and he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.

The De Kinderen Regional Hospital in Region Three has delivered critical medical services to more than 8000 patients since its commissioning in August 2025, with officials reporting substantial patient turnout in every major department.

During an impromptu visit to the facility on Saturday, hospital staff told President Irfaan Ali that the hospital’s emergency department alone sees about 70 patients every 24 hours, reflecting the heavy reliance placed on the new institution by residents of the region.

Advanced services are also in high demand. The radiology department has already catered to over 500 patients and the hospital conducts approximately 10 CT scans every day—a significant improvement for residents who previously had to travel to the Georgetown Public Hospital or private centres for this service.

Critical care numbers remain equally strong, with more than 100 patients passing through the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since the hospital opened.

Meanwhile, the maternity wing has welcomed over 100 new births.

At present, officials told President Ali there are five patients hospitalised, with three doctors on duty during the day and two at night, averaging around 25 patients per doctor.

During the visit, President Ali walked through the facility, engaging with staff and relatives of patients, assessing the facility overall service delivery.

The $6.6 billion De Kinderen Hospital was established as part of efforts to modernise Guyana’s healthcare system, specifically for the residents of Region Three.

The state-of-the-art facility offer both specialised and essential medical services, including Internal Medicine & Surgery, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Cardiology, Mental Health & Psychiatry, and Surgery. Patients will also have access to the 24/7 Emergency Department, Inpatient and Outpatient care, advanced laboratory and imaging services, as well as dental and optical care.

Essequibo defeated Demerara by one wicket in a thrilling low-scoring encounter in the Guyana Cricket Board/Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Senior Women’s Inter-County 50-over competition on Saturday at the Lusignan Ground.

This game was originally completely washed out on Friday at LBI, and was replayed as part of the first round of matches.

Demerara batted first and posted 77 all out from 32 overs. Essequibo, in reply, were coasting to victory at 54-3 before a spectacular collapse saw then being reduced to 63-9.

It took a last wicket partnership of 15 between Shonette Belgrave (9*) and Yonette Welcome (4*) to seal the win for the Essequibians.

Essequibo opener Tremaine Marks, named Player-of-the-Match, made a match-high 26 off 27 balls (4x4s), Extras were 14, while the experienced Kumarie Persaud made a crucial 13 off 41 balls, her dismissal sparking the collapse.

Off-spinner Letisha Jordan was outstanding with the ball for Demerara, taking 4-25, while skipper and left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz claimed 2-25.

When Demerara batted, the Barkoye sisters- Naomi and Cianna- made 12 and 11 respectively, while Jordan scored 11, as Extras were a healthy 26.

For Essequibo, Cyanna Retemiah (3-11) and Belgrave (2-12) stood out with the ball.

In the other opening round game, defending champions Berbice defeated newcomers Hinterland All-Stars by eight wickets.

In a landmark move for youth cricket in the Caribbean, Head of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Bissoondyal Singh, and Head of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Calvin Hope have signed a historic agreement to facilitate an Under-13 cricket tour to Guyana.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from December 12-20 and will feature a five-match series, providing young players from both countries with early exposure to competitive cricket and the opportunity to develop their skills in a structured, cross-territory environment.

“The exchange programme between Guyana and Barbados is more than just a series of matches,” Singh said.

“It represents a shared vision of nurturing talent, fostering camaraderie, and creating opportunities for our young cricketers to thrive. By engaging players at the Under-13 level, we are laying the groundwork for a sustainable and competitive future for cricket in the Caribbean.”

Commenting on the agreement Hope said, “This exchange programme offers massive benefits for our young cricketers. It provides them with invaluable experience, exposure to different playing conditions, and an opportunity to build friendships and networks beyond our borders. Initiatives like this are critical for developing the next generation of talent and ensuring the long-term growth of cricket in the Caribbean.”

The GCB emphasised that this initiative is part of a comprehensive, long-term strategy aimed at strengthening grassroots cricket across Guyana and the Caribbean.

By providing structured opportunities for young players to compete in international age-group competitions, the programme seeks to identify and nurture emerging talent from an early age, equip them with the skills, discipline, and competitive experience needed to excel, and create clear development pathways that lead from grassroots cricket to national and regional representation.

Furthermore, the initiative reflects the GCB’s commitment to enhancing collaboration between cricket boards across the Caribbean, fostering knowledge-sharing, best practices in coaching and administration, and a united approach to developing cricket at every level, thereby securing a strong and sustainable future for the sport regionally.

It must be noted that the GCB, in the recent past, had successfully conducted an Under-13 exchange programme with Trinidad and Tobago, further demonstrating its commitment to providing young players with exposure to competitive cricket across the region.

Oscar Piastri cut McLaren team-mate Lando Norris’ championship lead by two points with victory in the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix.

The Australian led an uneventful race from start to finish as Norris trailed home behind Mercedes’ George Russell, the top three finishing in the order in which they started.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen moved up from sixth on the grid to finish fourth, losing one point to Norris in the championship.

Norris now leads Piastri by 22 points and Verstappen by 25 heading into Sunday’s grand prix.

If Norris wins the grand prix, he will be champion. If either Piastri or Verstappen does, then the battle will go to the final race in Abu Dhabi next weekend.

Verstappen made up two places at the start as he followed team-mate Yuki Tsunoda past the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso, who had excelled in putting his uncompetitive car fourth on the grid, and the Japanese then let the Dutchman past.

Verstappen challenged Norris for the first few laps, even feigning an overtaking attempt on the Briton at one point, but eventually began to drop back complaining of bouncing and jumping from his car.

After the first three corners, the only overtaking move in the points positions was when Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli took advantage of Alonso running wide out of the final corner at the end of lap 12 to pass down the inside of Turn One at the start of the following lap.

Both Tsunoda and Antonelli were given five-second penalties for exceeding track limits too many times, leaving both in the same fifth and sixth positions.

Alonso took two valuable points for Aston Martin in seventh while Williams’ Carlos Sainz earned the final point in eighth.

Ferrari had a dire race. Charles Leclerc dropped from ninth on the grid to finish 13th, after two off-track moments, while Lewis Hamilton finished 17th after starting from the pit lane. (BBC)

Cricket Australia officials will meet with Usman Khawaja this week and ask the opener to explain himself over criticism of the Perth pitch, as they weigh up whether to sanction him for labelling it a “piece of s***”.

Khawaja raised eyebrows on Friday when he hit out at the surface for the first Test, just a day after the ICC handed it the highest possible rating of “very good”.

Speaking at a fundraising lunch for the Usman Khawaja Foundation, he criticised the wicket’s variable bounce during Australia’s eight-wicket win.

He also pointed to the fact 19 wickets were lost on day one this year against England, and 17 last year in the series opener between Australia and India.

CA officials are believed to be disappointed by the remarks, and will speak with Khawaja in camp ahead of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba.

The Perth Test was the shortest in Australia in 93 years, and the second shortest of all time in the country, with just 847 balls bowled in the entire match.

“Nineteen wickets on the first day and about 20 people got hit. That’s a great wicket, that seems real fair,” Khawaja said at the luncheon. “The same thing happened last year in the India Test. It’s just that day-one wicket, the ball just does not react.

“Steve Smith’s by far the best cricketer I’ve ever played with and he’s missing the middle of his bat by a long way. He does not miss the middle of his bat, (yet) he’s getting hit in the elbow.

“So day-one wicket at Perth is a piece of s***, I’m happy to say that. Has been last year, it was this year.”

CA this week praised the wicket, with chief of cricket James Allsopp saying the ICC’s rating had justified head office’s view the pitch provided “a fair balance between bat and ball”.

The rating also shone a light on England’s poor batting, which was labelled “brainless” by the likes of former England opener Geoffrey Boycott after they faced just 68.3 overs across two innings.

But Khawaja was adamant the Perth pitch was still not good enough, with his main issue being variable bounce.

“You can’t really predict up and down. Up and down is the hardest. Sideways is little bit easier,” he said. But up and down, your hands can’t catch up. They do get better. Day two, day three and then day four, they start to crack up and cure again.

“Whenever we play at Perth, it’s one of the few places we win the toss, bat first, hoping that we can bat again maybe at the end of day two and into day three.”

Khawaja’s talk with officials comes with pressure on his spot at the top of the order, with concerns over both his fitness and form in Perth.

Back spasms meant he was unable to open for Australia in either innings in Perth, allowing for Travis Head to score a match-winning century in the fourth-innings chase.

Khawaja is confident he will be fit to play in Brisbane, with his back having improved, while also insisting he had paid no attention to calls for him to be dropped from the side and Head moved up to open the batting. (ESPNcricinfo)
