West Indies prevailed over Bangladesh in the Super Over, beating the home side in Dhaka by one run. Akeal Hosein delivered an imperfect final over in extra time, defending 10 runs, but he kept Bangladesh in check with several dots mixed with wides and no-balls.

Saif Hassan, Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto couldn’t do the job for Bangladesh, and so, the series is now 1-1.

West Indies had earlier scored ten runs in their Super Over, with captain Shai Hope getting a boundary off the last ball, after Mustafizur Rahman had removed Sherfane Rutherford with his second ball.

This was Bangladesh’s first tie in 814 men’s international matches.

Hope carried West Indies in regulation time, getting the only half-century of the game. West Indies needed five runs off the 50th over to complete a chase of 214. Saif Hassan bowled two dot balls before conceding a single.

Hope got on strike and even though he only had Hosein at the other end – the No. 10 batter playing his first game on tour – he chose to take another single.

Saif punished Hope for that, bowling Hosein between his legs. Khary Pierre, the last man in, needed to get three off the final ball, but his top edge spun towards square leg. Wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan ran for the catch, but he dropped the chance. He also couldn’t pass the ball on in time to Mustafizur, who was stood by the stumps, as Pierre and Hope completed two runs, tying the match.

West Indies became the first team to bowl spin for all 50 overs of an ODI.

The visitors overhauled a record that had stood since 2004, when Sri Lanka plied Australia with 44 overs of slow bowling. Bangladesh topped that tally up with 42 overs from their own spinners, pushing the match aggregate to 92 overs of spin – another record in this format.

When West Indies’ chase began, Nasum Ahmed removed Brandon King in the first over. Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty batted solidly during the powerplay, with Athanaze hitting Mehidy Hasan Miraz over covers, followed by a straight drive off Nasum.

He also struck two more fours, before Rishad Hossain trapped him lbw. Athanze missed with a sweep after connecting with one earlier in the over.

Carty was Rishad’s next victim when he missed his reverse sweep, and the ball snuck through and hit his back leg. Debutant Ackeem Auguste swept Tanvir Islam straight to Rishad at square leg, falling for 17. Sherfane Rutherford was given out lbw next, in the 27th over, as West Indies lost half their side with 103 on the board.

Gudakesh Motie and Hope tried to keep West Indies afloat, but they were separated six overs later. Rishad struck with a full ball that Motie went after with a wild slog, falling for 15. Roston Chase, batting at No. 8, followed soon after, caught behind off Nasum.

From 133 for 7, Hope added 44 runs for the eighth wicket with Justin Greaves. The latter got run out trying to take a quick single, with Mehidy effecting a direct hit to get the crucial wicket.

Hope handled most of the strike but Hosein struck a six, to take West Indies closer. Needing just 14 off 12 balls, it looked unlikely that they would let the game go into a Super Over.

Earlier, Bangladesh struggled to get going for most of their innings after deciding to bat first. Saif was dismissed after hitting a six, while Towhid Hridoy and Shanto got out to poor shots. Hridoy top-edged a slog, while Shanto got caught at short midwicket, unable to time Athanaze’s long hop.

Sarkar played some gorgeous shots in between a lot of dot balls. He made 45 off 89 balls with three fours and a six, before holing out in the deep in the 31st over.

Bangladesh were 103 for 5, and looked in danger, until Nurul slammed a six and two fours for his 23, leaving Rishad to do the finishing. He struck three fours and as many sixes in his unbeaten 14-ball 39, all of which came in the last 2.1 overs of the Bangladesh innings.

Athanaze was West Indies’ best bowler with figures of 2 for 14 from his ten overs, while Hosein, who flew into Dhaka on the day before the match, also picked up two wickets. Motie took 3 for 65, his figures spoiled by Rishad’s last burst of boundaries. (ESPNcricinfo)

A superb all-round performance from Nityanand Mathura and a four-wicket haul from off-spinner Devindra Krishnalall highlighted a commanding eight-wicket victory for Everest against Diplomats on Sunday (October 19) in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s NBS Second Division 40-over cricket competition.

In the other match last weekend, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) lost a close, high-scoring encounter against Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO), despite a fine century from middle-order batsman Shamal Angel.

With ball, the leg-spinner snared 4-3 off fours and received solid support from Krishnalall, who bagged 4-12 off 7.1 overs of right-arm off-spinner, as Diplomats made 101 in 26.1 overs.

Opener Deryck Babb topscored with 46 off 62 (7x4s, 1×6) and Munesh Outar made 22 off 39 (4x4s).

Mathura then struck an unbeaten 46 off 33 balls (6x4s, 1×6) and opener Varun Mangla mde 39 off 25 (8x4s) to spur Everest to an eight-wicket win in just 12.4 overs.

The right-hander, batting at number five, struck 12 fours and five sixes and received support from Michael Deonarine with 48 off 35 (5x4s, 4x6s), Rockael Reddy with 21 off 37 (2x4s) and Christopher Deonarine 21 off 13 (3x4s, 1×6).

Albion trio Gaurav Ramesh (3-51), Leon Cecil (2-23) and Kelvin Umroa (2-36) were the leading wicket-takers for MYO.

MYO’s 300-9 was built on a 45-ball 61 from Albion batsman Damion Cecil, who struck eight fours and three sixes, and Ricky Debydial, who made 50 off 60 (5x4s, 1×6).

Also chipping in with Leon Cecil (30), Keon Morris (28), Kelvin Umroa (26), Travis Kadir (23) and Dexter Solomon (21). Bowling for GDF, Rashaad Gaffur and Angel picked up two wickets each.

Tributes are pouring in for Indian actor Govardhan Asrani, who died this week at the age of 84.

Asrani, popularly known by his last name, was suffering from a brief illness and died at a hospital in Mumbai city on Monday, his manager told BBC Hindi.

Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Asrani acted in more than 300 films, mostly in comic roles. One of his most memorable performances was in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay, in which he played an eccentric jailer.

“The one who brought smiles to everyone’s faces, Asrani ji is no longer among us. His passing is an irreparable loss for both Hindi cinema and our hearts,” his family said in a statement posted on the actor’s social media account.

His final rites were performed on Monday with family members and close friends in attendance.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Asrani a “gifted entertainer” and “versatile artist”.

“He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished,” Modi wrote on X.

Asrani was born in 1941 in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. He began his career as a voice artist at the state-run All India Radio before studying acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in the 1960s.

He made his Hindi film debut in 1967, but it was his portrayal of a bumbling jailer- meant to be a parody of Adolf Hitler- in 1975’s Sholay that brought him widespread fame.

In an interview with BBC Hindi earlier this year, Asrani recalled how he prepared for the role.

The film’s writer duo Salim-Javed and director Ramesh Sippy told him that the jailer “thinks he is very smart but isn’t”, he said.

Asrani was a familiar face on TV shows aired on state broadcaster Doordarshan in the 1980s and 90s. He played the role of the Hindu sage Narad Muni in Natkhat Narad, a popular show in the 80s. He also directed several Hindi and Gujarati films.

The actor became synonymous with comic roles in mainstream films, ranging from subtle situational humour to exaggerated performances. But he believed he was more than just a comedian.

Speaking to BBC Hindi, Asrani said he was proud of the recognition he received for his comic timing but did not consider himself merely a “comedian”, rather “an artist who finds truth in every role”.

Through his career, Asrani worked with some of the biggest actors and directors of every era.

Some of his most iconic films include Chupke Chupke (1975), Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978) and Balika Badhu (1976)- a role that won him the Filmfare award for best comic actor.

Asrani occasionally broke away from his humorous image to portray darker, more complex roles in films such as Koshish (1972) and Chaitali (1975).

As news of his death broke, co-workers paid their tributes and shared memories of working with him.

Mr Sippy, who directed Sholay, said Asrani would always be remembered for the role of the jailer, calling it the one he was born to play.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar shared a photo of himself with Asrani, recalling the actor’s comic timing.

“From all my cult films Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag to De Dana Dan, Welcome and now our unreleased Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan… I had worked and learned so much from him. What an absolute loss to our industry,” he wrote on X.

Singer Adnan Sami, who worked with Asrani in one of his music videos, shared a personal memory of the actor’s generosity and charm.

“I had the honour of working and spending time with him when I requested him to appear in my music video of Lift Karadey (a 1997 song) and I too wanted him to reenact his legendary ‘Jailor’ character for which he generously agreed,” he wrote. (BBC)

Police in Region Two have arrested a 38-year-old school teacher of Vilvoorden, Essequibo Coast, following an incident at Hack’s Rice Mill on Monday morning.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 08:19 hrs. Investigations revealed that a 31-year-old businessman was in his office at the rice mill when the teacher entered and placed a container with a muddy substance inside.

The teacher allegedly emptied the container and began throwing the mud at the businessman and around the office, causing a scene.

The matter was promptly reported to the Aurora Police Station, where ranks responded and arrested the suspect. Statements were taken from those involved, and the teacher was subsequently placed on $15,000 station bail pending a court appearance.

Police also confirmed that after the arrest, several persons visited the Aurora Police Station, but no additional arrests were made, nor were any further offences reported in connection with the incident.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

President of the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF), Michael Singh, has reaffirmed Guyana’s readiness to host this year’s FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship, scheduled for November 12-16 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The highly anticipated tournament will feature five teams- the Bahamas, Jamaica, Suriname, the Virgin Islands and hosts Guyana- all battling for three coveted spots at the 2026 Centrobasket Women’s Championship.

According to Singh, the GBF has received the full backing of the Government of Guyana to ensure the successful staging of the championship, which returns to Guyana for the first time since 1994.

Singh explained that following an inspection visit by FIBA officials, several key areas requiring upgrades were identified, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has been actively addressing each of them.

“We’ve been having constant discussions with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and they’re just as excited as we are to see this tournament being held in Guyana,” Singh said.

“Both Minister Charles Ramson Jr. and Minister Steven Jacobs have been following the preparations for this championship step-by-step, and we’re very grateful for their support.”

The GBF president expressed confidence that Guyana will deliver a world-class event, describing the upcoming tournament as one of the best Women’s Championships the region will ever see.

“This is an important tournament, and the GBF, along with the Government of Guyana, is doing everything possible to ensure its success,” Singh stated.

“We have an experienced Local Organising Committee, and we look forward to seeing every Guyanese come out to support our national team and enjoy top-level basketball.”

The championship will follow a round-robin format, with each team facing every other once. At the end of the group stage, the top three finishers will secure qualification for the 2026 Centrobasket Women’s Championship.

Mexico, El Salvador and Nicaragua have already booked their spots at Centrobasket 2026 after finishing on the podium at the 2025 COCABA Women’s Championship held in June.

At the last Women’s Caribbean Championship in 2022, host nation Cuba emerged champions.

With the countdown underway, Singh assured that all systems are in place for Guyana to deliver a memorable championship, and one that will showcase the country’s ability to host major international basketball events.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Guyana’s Rosanna Fung, following her historic triumph at the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) World Championship.

Residents of Vilvoorden and neighbouring Fairfield on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two, say they are finally seeing some hope after years of enduring heavy dust and smoke pollution from a rice mill operating in their community.

Head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Kemraj Parsaram, confirmed on Monday that the agency has been actively addressing the issue and that the matter is now before the court.

“We’ve been dealing with it, and it is in court. Earlier this month, the court issued an order giving the rice mill until December to comply with the directions given by the EPA,” Parsaram told News Room.

Among the immediate directives issued by the EPA is the removal of large heaps of paddy husk stored on the mill’s compound—one of which is reportedly on fire, causing thick plumes of smoke to affect nearby residents.

The order was clear: remove the paddy heap immediately, control the fire, and ensure no further burning takes place. There are also fresh, additional instructions to take away the remaining piles, Parsaram explained.

He noted that, over the past few months, the EPA has been working with the mill owner to install a water system while retrofitting sections of the facility to reduce dust emissions. Parts have been imported to improve dust control, he said.

“In the short term, while the retrofitting is ongoing, the mill is required to remove the old paddy husks that are burning and ensure that any fresh husk generated is immediately taken away,” Parsaram added.

In the past, frustrated residents staged picketing exercises, insisting that the mill has continued operations in defiance of previous EPA orders. They argue that the dust and smoke have made living conditions unbearable, coating their homes and crops with soot and affecting their health.

The EPA has reiterated that no burning of rice by-products should take place and that the mill must fully comply with environmental standards by the court’s December deadline.

West Indies quick Shamar Joseph was in line for a return to international cricket this weekend after missing the Test tour of India, but he has been set back by “some discomfort in his shoulder.”

The 26-year-old, who was with the ODI squad in Dhaka, has now been sidelined from the three-match series against Bangladesh as well.

Joseph had been picked for the T20I leg of the tour too. A Cricket West Indies (CWI) release on Monday said “he has been recommended for consultation with a specialist in England to start the rehabilitation process.”

Before the Bangladesh series, Joseph had missed the two Test matches in India with an unspecified injury. He hasn’t played any cricket since the CPL ended in September. There he represented Guyana Amazon Warriors for five of their 12 matches.

Left-arm seamer Jediah Blades also joined Joseph on the sidelines. The 23-year-old, who has played nine white-ball internationals for West Indies, was ruled out of the Bangladesh tour and the following New Zealand tour with a stress fracture of the lower back. Blades will return home for his rehab.

Allrounder Akeal Hosein and left-arm seamer Ramon Simmonds have been added to West Indies’ squad for the remaining two ODIs against Bangladesh. Hosein and Simmonds were already scheduled to play the three-match T20I series, which will conclude West Indies’ tour of Bangladesh.
