As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure at the East Coast Demerara venue, the Helene One and Two Sports Club will embark on a fund-raising duck curry competition on Sunday, November 16.

Proceeds from the event will go towards payment for the contractor who built a spanking new washroom facility at the venue.

“We’re on a move to enhance the facility and this is just one step in that direction, but we can’t do it alone. We need the support and we want persons to come and have a good time, while supporting a worthy cause. We want persons to be comfortable when they come to the venue and the construction of the new washroom is indicative of that,” Singh said.

While there is no entrance fee for members of the public to access the event, Singh highlighted that there will be a stocked bar, duck curry on sale and musical entertainment.

Cooking will start at 14:00h.

The Ministry of Education is currently conducting a full review of the National School Feeding Programme to ensure that the nutritional needs of learners are met, and that this incredible initiative continues to have an even more profound impact on the lives of school children and their families all across the country.

“Assuming office in September, I had a sit down with the School Feeding Unit to ascertain the daily operations of the programme and how we can improve it to create the impact that we want,” Minister of Education Sonia Parag said in a press release.

The ministry has been working keenly with the Carnegie School of Home Economics to review the menu and improve on its nutritional output.

In the meantime, complaints raised in the public and via social media will all be investigated, and addressed with urgency and fairness.

The ministry said it is prepared to work with those who are willing to meet the standards set out. Further, there will be no compromise when it comes to ensuring the health and well-being of children.

Moreover, headteachers are reminded of their responsibility to report any issues with the programme urgently to the Ministry of Education, and their function as an added level of supervision to ensure its continued success.

In keeping with the Government of Guyana’s zero-tolerance approach to illegal mining operations, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is currently engaged in a joint-agency operation within the Ireng area to confront unlawful mining and related issues.

As part of this exercise, several illegal mining operations were identified, resulting in the detention of equipment and minerals in accordance with regulations. Several non-nationals were also arrested, and where appropriate, these actions will be followed by recommendations for charges. These joint operations will continue as part of the broader effort to reduce noncompliance in the mining sector.

The GGMC has also noted, with concern, that some political parties are attempting to exploit and inflame the situation for their own purposes. The commission does not support such actions and rejects any effort to politicise enforcement activities that are strictly guided by law, established procedure, and the national interest.

The Government of Guyana reiterates that these gross illegalities will be addressed firmly and without exception. All relevant agencies remain fully engaged to ensure the law is upheld, offenders are held accountable, and mining operations nationwide adhere to the standards and regulations designed to protect the sector and the country.

Oyanna Stewart, 28, of Wismar, Linden was granted $600,000 bail after being charged with manslaughter on Friday. Stewart is accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend, Kevin Alexander, a 30-year-old carpenter also from Wismar.

Stewart appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool. She was not required to plea to the indictable charge. This matter was adjourned December 18, 2025.

Police reported that the incident occurred on Monday night during a domestic altercation.

According to the police report, during an argument between Alexander and Stewart, the woman allegedly stabbed Alexander once to the left side of his abdomen.

Relatives and public-spirited residents rushed the injured man to the Linden Hospital Complex, but he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

Guyana’s efforts to ensure safer childbirth have pushed skilled birth attendance to 90 per cent as health officials target global rates by 2030.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Narine Singh on Friday said this is important to upgrade the skills of midwives and this is a national priority.

A training session for strategic Management of High-Risk Obstetric Conditions was held on Friday at the Ministry of Health.

“Upgrading the skills of our midwives is very important.

“These sessions are designed to ensure they are better prepared to handle the emergencies they may encounter during the delivery process,” Dr. Singh said.

He noted that the workshops form a key part of their continuous medical education ensuring that midwives remain competent, confident, and up to date with modern obstetrics practices.

As Guyana moves toward its 2030 targets, the country hopes to achieve 100 percent of deliveries being attended by a skilled birth attendant.

“Right now, we stand at about 90 percent,” Dr. Singh said.

He added that the nation is trending positively in terms of its maternal mortality rate. He credited the commitment of healthcare professionals, especially midwives working in far-flung communities, for ensuring that every newborn receives timely care, no matter where they live.

Dr. Singh also issued a reminder about the human side of maternal care. He acknowledged reports from patients who felt the quality of care during delivery fell short due to the professionals being less understanding of the painful process.

He reminded them to be kind and respectful as this will be a memory for patients, blending clinical skills with compassion.

Guyana’s midwives continue to play a pivotal role in shaping a healthier future for mothers and their babies. Dr. Singh said the ministry is aiming to have more persons trained in this field and readily available in every region.

On Thursday, November 13, 2025, at approximately 04:00 hours, officers from Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) of the Guyana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) were attacked by alleged smugglers during an intelligence driven enforcement operation in the vicinity of No. 61 Village, Berbice.

During the operation, the Customs Enforcement Officers had intercepted a large wooden motor vessel conveying a significant quantity of uncustomed goods which included alcoholic beverages, and detained same along with the persons found on board. However, while the vessel and its contents were being escorted to a designated facility in the vicinity of No# 43 village, Berbice, for processing, the officers were ambushed by a group of men who forcefully retrieved the vessel and seized items.

Through swift collaboration with other sister agencies including ranks of the Guyana Police Force and the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit, four (4) of the perpetrators have since been arrested and will face prosecution to the full extent of the law for their actions. Efforts are ongoing to locate the vessel and its contents.

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) wishes to remind the public of its “zero tolerance” approach to smuggling and anyone who attempts to import or export goods with intent to defraud the Revenue Authority of any duties is guilty of an offence and is liable to penalties and/or imprisonment in accordance with Section 218 of the Customs Act Chapter 82:01.

The Revenue Authority pleads with the General Public to report any illicit, unlawful or smuggling activities on telephone number 227-6060, Extensions 3201, 3204, 3205, 3206, 3211, 3212, or 3408. Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken on Friday revealed that last month’s bombing attack at the Mobil gas station in Georgetown appears to be unrelated to two other similar incidents which occurred earlier this year.

Speaking to the media at the launch of the Force’s Christmas Policing Plan on Friday, Hicken said the investigations show no evidence of collaboration between the incidents.

“Based on our investigation, there is no motive that would point us to the collaboration of the others,” Hicken said.

“To be sure, this happened and we have ramped up, as Joint Services, all the gaps that we have. Now, as a joint service, we can better protect our country,” Hicken said.

When asked about the motive behind the gas station incident in particular, Hicken responded: “That cannot be said at this time, you know the matter is before the court.”

The bombing at the Mobil gas station at Regent and King Streets on October 26 tragically claimed the life of six-year-old Soraya Bourne.

Seven individuals, including alleged mastermind Venezuelan national Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, have been charged with terrorism and are currently before the courts.

Months before this, there were incidents involving explosions at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and the Guyana Power and Light Substation at Mandela Avenue.

As the holiday season approaches, the Guyana Police Force is rolling out an extensive plan to keep residents and visitors safe.

Division Region 4A (Georgetown) which stretches from Cummings Lodge to Agricola, accounts for a significant portion of the city’s crime and traffic incidents, prompting the force to implement robust and innovative policing strategies.

At the launch of the Force’s Christmas policing plan on Friday, Commander Simon McBean announced that the operation will see 507 officers deployed daily with 207 patrols, including 249 traffic patrols and 258 anti-crime patrols.

Drone patrols will be utilised daily based on needs, enhancing surveillance in high-risk areas and hard-to-monitor locations.

Other patrols include:
• Bicycle patrols from 8 a.m. to the end of shopping hours
• Motorcycle patrols from 8 a.m. to midnight
• Motor vehicle and maritime patrols operating 24 hours a day

Key focus areas for patrols include markets, shopping malls, Regent and Robb Streets, banks, the seawall, hotels, shipping agencies, recreational areas, and post offices, Mc Bean revealed.

The force will also use smart policing strategies, heightened traffic enforcement, and enhanced management of entertainment and public events. Efforts will be made to reduce noise nuisance too.

“While we will allow persons to enjoy the festive season, we will also ensure that noise does not affect others,” Mc Bean said.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay aware of their surroundings, consider alternatives to cash payments, dress down, and place purchases in vehicle trunks to avoid theft.

During the festive period, additional measures include:
• Increased deployment of police ranks both day and night
• Operational police booths at key locations, particularly main shopping areas
• Patrols deployed to hotspots during peak hours
• Briefing sessions with business owners on customer safety strategies
• Enhanced security at ports of entry, including airports
• Deployment of recruits to strengthen police complement

Crime Chief, Deputy Commissioner Wendell Blanhum said these measures, including the use of drones, are part of a comprehensive approach to ensure a safe, secure, and enjoyable festive season for all.

New Golden Jaguars Head Coach Thomas Dooley has named a familiar core squad as he prepares to kick off his tenure with two crucial fixtures in the inaugural CONCACAF Friendly Series (CFS) this month.

Dooley, a former US international footballer with a UEFA Pro Licence, takes charge of the senior men’s national team with a clear mandate to lift Guyana’s competitive standing and FIFA ranking.

Guyana is currently placed 153^rd in FIFA rankings and 17^th in CONCACAF.
