Three individuals have been arrested and are in custody as Police investigate the death of Kamaluddin Abrahim, a man who was reported missing and later found dead in 2023.

In July 2023, 73-year-old Kamaluddin, known as “the brown clothes man,” of Lot 111 Free-Yard, Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice, was reported missing by his son Shazad Abrahim.

On July 3, 2023, at around noon, a fisherman found a decomposed body at the Rose Hall Town foreshore in Corentyne Berbice, hidden in a clump of bushes.

Later that day, a post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted, but the cause of death was deemed unascertainable due to the advanced state of decomposition.

Family members of Kamaluddin believe he was murdered, as he had reportedly been attacked and chopped multiple times.

An intelligence-led investigation by the police in Regional Police Division 6, overseen by a senior officer, has resulted in the detention of three males aged between 29 and 49 in connection with Kamaluddin’s death.

The official launch of the World Trade Centre Georgetown (WTCG) will be marked by a full week of business and networking events from October 19 to 24, 2025, intensifying Guyana’s work as part of the global World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) network.

Executive Chairman of WTCG, Komal Samaroo, said the planned activities were designed to ensure the private sector is at the heart of the celebrations. “Our mission is about elevating the business environment in Guyana, creating opportunities for meaningful connections, knowledge-sharing, and growth. The World Trade Centre Georgetown will serve as a bridge between local enterprises and the global market.”

The programme begins on Sunday, October 19, with the arrival of international delegations. On Monday, October 20, a welcome reception will bring together visiting officials, ministers, and local business leaders. Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, will deliver the welcome remarks.

The highlight of the week will be on Tuesday, October 21, with the official launch ceremony at WTCG’s Kingston headquarters which was commissioned in June this year. Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has been invited to deliver the keynote address. Remarks will also come from WTCA Vice Chairman, Remy Swaab and Managing Director World Trade Centre Bengaluru, India Vineet Verma. This will be followed by a formal launch dinner will feature presentations by international trade specialists, government ministers, and global advisors on Guyana’s growing role in international commerce. Olinda Salguero, Vice President of the Latin American and Caribbean Presidential Mission is the featured speaker.

October 22 starts with a presentation from Dr Peter Ramsaroop, Chief Executive Officer Guyana Office for Investment, focusing on Doing Business in and with Guyana. This is followed by a panel on the Effective Use of Artificial Intelligence & Digital Platforms by MSME’s featuring Luis Carlos Martinez, President of WTC Ibague (Colombia); Sharazade Kirton, Digital Marketing Director, Loews Hotel Group; and Roger Singh-Co-Founder, Scalar Performance Inc. (Canada).

Another panel then delves into: Successfully Navigating the Current Global Trade Environment, featuring Vaughn Renwick-Chief Executive Officer, West Indies Rum & Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA), Karen Gerwitz-President & CEO, World Trade Centre Denver/WTCA Board Member; and Abiola Heyliger, International Trade Policy Analyst/Former Trade Negotiator, United States Trade Representative’s Office, Washington DC.

On October 23, international trade expert Sandra Ann Baptiste, CITP, will lead a one-day training seminar on “Successful Exhibiting: Effective Planning and Marketing for Trade Shows”.

The remaining activities for the week will include luncheons and networking forums engaging micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as large corporations.

Samaroo emphasised that the activities demonstrate the Centre’s long-term mission. “The World Trade Centre Georgetown will provide services, training, and international connections to help Guyanese businesses expand globally,” he said.

Jeremiah James, a 19-year-old labourer of ‘D’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown was remanded to prison after he was charged with a number of offences including child pornography.

James appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse. He was charged with possession of child pornography, procuring child pornography, using a computer system to commit child luring and causing a child under 16 to watch a sexual act.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of child pornography and causing a child under 16 to watch a sexual act. James pleaded not guilty to child luring and procuring child pornography.

He was remanded to prison until October 16, 2025.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Saturday morning met with the staff of the old Demerara Harbour Bridge, where he assured them that their jobs are safe even as the new Demerara River Bridge comes into operation on Sunday.

“As president and as a government, we appreciate you, we recognise the tremendous work that you have done and I do not want you to believe this new bridge displaces your work or your contribution. Your contribution to the development of the bridge and more bridges will continue unbroken.

“Not a single one of you have to worry about displacement or the security of your job,” President Ali told the staff.

He also noted that the government is working to finalise the relocation of the old bridge and determine its future placement. Already, plans have been made for a section of the bridge to be used to connect Timehri and Sandhills.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, further assured workers that no one will be displaced during the transition. Edghill said the General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Wayne Watson has already submitted the complete staff skillset and years of service to guide the reassignment process. To support this process, a Human Resources team will be assessing the skills available among staff.

Some staff will be relocated to Sandhills, Timehri while others will fill existing vacancies at other government ministries or agencies.

For those required to move an assessment will be done to determine which personnel will be at the new Demerara River Bridge.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) is pleased to announce that planning has officially commenced for Guyana’s Premier ‘Ruminant Expo and Competition’ scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Weldaad, West Coast Berbice.

This flagship event is expected to attract cattle, sheep, and goat farmers from across Guyana’s coastal regions, which collectively account for more than 80 percent of the nation’s ruminant population. The show will highlight the country’s finest animal genetics while showcasing innovations that are driving the growth of livestock production “from farm to fork.” Already, more than 33 farmers from regions 3, 4, 5, and 6 have expressed their interest in participating in the 2025 Ruminant Expo, signaling widespread enthusiasm and industry support.

The event will feature a Ruminant Judging Competition, where farmers will compete for over 21 prizes across various categories, recognizing the best of Guyana’s cattle, sheep, and goats. Farmers will also benefit from a livestock auction, which will provide opportunities to share knowledge, access improved animal genetics, and strengthen market linkages. A Cooking Competition, including the much-anticipated Fireside Curry Challenge, will feature dishes prepared with locally sourced livestock products and is expected to attract some of Guyana’s leading culinary experts. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore Technology and Innovation Displays, including demonstrations of climate-smart practices, improved post-harvest techniques, and modern tools that promote sustainable production. The GLDA Exhibitions will showcase ruminant breeds, genetic improvement technologies, and key initiatives in livestock development, while children’s activities will create a family-friendly atmosphere and encourage wider public engagement.

A highlight of this year’s show will be the exhibition of the Gyr-Lando (Girolando) cattle breed, an important addition to Guyana’s national breeding programme. The Girolando, a cross between the Holstein-Friesian and the Gyr, combines the high milk-yielding capacity of the Holstein with the Gyr’s heat tolerance, disease resistance, and adaptability to tropical conditions. This makes the Girolando an ideal dual-purpose breed, capable of thriving in Guyana’s environment while significantly boosting dairy production and advancing national food security.

The ‘Ruminant Expo and Competition 2025’ highlights Guyana’s growing commitment to climate-smart practices. The exhibition will highlight modern livestock management systems, including advanced forage production, improved animal housing, and waste-to-energy initiatives. Importantly, it will serve as an interactive networking platform for farmers, agribusinesses, policymakers, and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge, strengthen collaboration, and build partnerships.

In view of Guyana’s continued efforts to safeguard public health and food standards, the Guyana Food Safety Authority (GFSA) will play an important role at this year’s show. Their participation underscores the country’s dedication to ensuring that all stakeholders along the value chain practice the highest levels of food safety, a priority that not only protects consumers but also enhances Guyana’s readiness for regional and international trade.

Speaking on the importance of this event, Dr. Dwight Walrond, Chief Executive Officer of the GLDA, noted:

Sudesh Singh, a 15-year-old resident of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, died on Friday after his 50-year-old stepfather reportedly chopped him several times.

Police Headquarters reported that Singh resided with his 35-year-old unemployed mother, Roshanini Surujballi, and his stepfather in the lower flat of a two-storey wooden and concrete structure.

On Friday at around 14:30 hrs, the teen and his stepfather had a misunderstanding over the man’s bicycle, which the teen had used, and caused the chain to slip. As a result, an argument ensued between them and the stepfather reportedly ran into his kitchen, picked up a cutlass, rushed towards Singh and chopped him. This caused the teen to receive injuries to his neck area, and he fell to the ground.

The stepfather then walked out of the yard and went to the Leonora Police Station, where he reported the matter. He was arrested and placed into custody pending further investigation.

On arrival at the scene, the Police found the teen lying motionless, face upwards under the house, bleeding at his neck. A cutlass was seen near the body. The entire scene was processed, and several persons in the area were questioned.

Singh’s was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, then to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour for storage, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Ravindra Jadeja has been building a case to be one of the best allrounders in the game. A four-for to follow a hundred against West Indies to start the new home season was just the latest evidence he offered in favour of that argument.

On the back of his 104 not out and 4 for 54, India completed an innings win with two-and-a-half days to spare.

A proud record stood tall between February 22, 2013 and October 25, 2024.

It buckled 24 hours later.

India lost a Test series on home soil for the first time in nearly 12 years. Many of the players who had contributed to that run are now retired, including Virat Kohli, R Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara. But Jadeja remains.

He was there when India began that run against Australia in Chennai. He was there when New Zealand broke them last year in Pune.

And he was there once again, lifting them back up against West Indies now. At 36 years old, it is unclear how much cricket is left in him but it was poetic that in the first of 66 Tests that India had to play at home without R Ashwin, his old pal came up with a hundred and a four-for.

Alick Athanaze carried the West Indies flag, showing why he is rated as a good player of spin. He picked up length well. He was decisive going forward or back. And he remembered to put pressure back, two rock-solid reverse sweeps for four and one sumptuous cover drive for three highlighted his process. All of those scoring shots were against half-volleys that were well wide of the stumps.

This is the judgment and the competence that convinced the coach Daren Sammy and the management to bring him back into the Test side.

India, though, kept placing new threats in front of Athanaze. Jasprit Bumrah hit him on the helmet. Washington Sundar tested him with the ball turning away.

They were waiting for Athanaze to be just slightly off with his process and eventually, after 73 balls, he was, closing the face of the bat, baited by an offbreak that pitched on middle. Washington took a simple catch, which then led to a symbolic representation of West Indies’ batting in this Test.

Jomel Warrican tried to impose himself on Mohammed Siraj, swinging as hard as he could, only for his bat to fly out of his grip and land at square leg. The ball meanwhile settled in mid-off’s hands.

 

West Indies are a side still building its best batters. Ahead of this tour, they were shorn of two of their best bowlers. This informed the challenge they could pose. They are struggling to find a better opener than John Campbell, 32, who is the third-most experienced player in this XI.

He has 23 caps and in all that time, he has no centuries. Even in first-class cricket, after 101 matches, he has only nine centuries.

In Ahmedabad, he fell for 8 and 14. The only slightly younger Tagenarine Chanderpaul finished with 0 and 8. Top-order returns like that just won’t do.

Jadeja is sometimes accused of being that left-arm spinner who just fires the ball in and lets the pitch do its work. But he knows how to work batters out too. He saw Brandon King lunching forward to try and smother the turn and that helped him once. He hit a crisp cover drive for four. It also led to his downfall as Jadeja recalibrated his flight. I

t was still full so it triggered King’s instinct to get on the front foot. But he had no way of getting to the pitch of this one. So having committed to the shot, he ended up vulnerable to the turn and presented a straightforward catch to slip.

All this happened in the space of two overs. In that small period of time, Jadeja turned what the batter thought was a strength into a weakness.

Siraj was the other bowler among the wickets, taking five or more over the course of a home Test for the first time.

West Indies lost 10 wickets in two sessions on the first day. They did it again on the third day. Only two players got into the 30s. Only two faced 50 or more balls. They have five days to address these problems before the start of the second game in Delhi. The wait to win a Test match against India in India, which is into its 31st year, continues. Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States -Barbados, Belize, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines- implemented full Free Movement of their nationals among themselves from Wednesday, 1 October 2025.

This means that nationals of these four countries will not be limited to temporary entry of up to six months, or to work under the CARICOM skills regime. Nationals from these four countries will be able to travel to any of these four countries to reside, work and remain indefinitely, with the right to access emergency and primary health care as well as public primary and secondary education for their children.

The decision by the four Member States to implement full Free Movement ahead of the other Member States, was approved by CARICOM Heads of Government during their meeting in July 2025. This arrangement falls under the Enhanced Cooperation Protocol to the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas which provides for groups of at least three CARICOM Member States to pursue deeper regional integration efforts among themselves, with the option for other Member States to join later.

Extensive Preparations Undertaken

The four Member States have been meeting to finalize common approaches and have confirmed that the necessary arrangements are in place to support the full free movement of their nationals among the four Member States as of 1 October 2025. Extensive preparations have been undertaken to ensure a smooth and secure rollout of full Free Movement among these four Member States. These include:

• Indefinite Stay at Entry: Nationals of the four participating Member States will receive a stamp or digital record of indefinite stay on arrival.
• Registration: Systems have been established to allow for registration of incoming nationals, enabling access to services such as education and healthcare, and allowing national agencies to plan for any increased demand.
• Security and Health Safeguards: Effective oversight measures are in place to ensure that individuals who pose a threat to national security, public health, or would become a cost to the public are either denied entry or subject to removal. These measures will be supported by the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) which coordinates Member States security cooperation and administers the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), which mandates submission of passenger data before travel.
• Complaints Mechanism: Nationals who experience difficulties at ports of entry or after entry may use the CARICOM Complaints Procedure, which is already operational under the CSME. Forms are available at all ports of entry, and complaints will be reviewed within two weeks, with investigations completed within eight weeks, where necessary.

With systems in place and preparations complete, the four countries are ready to manage the new Free Movement arrangements effectively in the best interest of their citizens and the wider Region.

Existing Regime Remains for Other Member States

The other Member States that participate in the CSME and have not signed on to full free movement will continue to facilitate movement of their nationals under the existing regime for skilled workers, for the provision of services and the operation of businesses (Modified release from CARICOM)

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) have signed a Technical Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote collaboration in civil aviation. This Memorandum of Understanding aims to improve the development, modernization, and operational efficiency of aviation systems between the two countries. Although the MoU is non-binding, it signifies the mutual dedication of both authorities to seek innovative solutions that bolster aviation safety and reinforce regulatory frameworks.

The signing ceremony featured GCAA’s Director General, Lt. Col. (Ret’d) Egbert Field, and CAAS Director General Han Kok Juan, on the sidelines of the 42nd General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (A42) held in Montreal, Canada, from September 23 to October 3, 2025.
A key aspect of this partnership is the creation of a collaborative framework for technical cooperation, focusing on knowledge sharing and the adoption of best practices in safety management, regulatory oversight, and training, including exploring mutual interests in areas such as human resources management and the economic regulation of air transport. This arrangement marks a significant advancement in cooperation for both countries.

The CAAS is widely recognized as a global leader in aviation training, setting benchmarks for excellence and innovation within the industry. CAAS utilizes state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced simulators and modern classrooms, to deliver an unparalleled learning experience. Over the years, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has benefited significantly from the comprehensive training and technical support extended by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) commissioned two new pilot boats, the Haiakwa and Haiama, on Friday.

The two vessels are worth approximately US$5 million. This move is aimed at strengthening the nation’s maritime capacity to meet the growing demands of the oil and gas industry.

According to a post from the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, subject minister Deodat Indar, emphasised that the expansion of the Maritime Administration Department’s (MARAD) fleet is crucial in Guyana’s quest to become a regional hub for shipping and trade. He also reportedly highlighted the need for more trained river pilots to support the growing maritime industry.

The two state-of-the-art vessels bring MARAD’s fleet to five, showcasing a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible approach to maritime operations in Guyana. Minister Indar stressed the importance of safety on the waterways and encouraged pilots and engineers to maintain the vessels properly to ensure their longevity.

It was also noted that the government is committed to strengthening the maritime sector’s legislative framework with the establishment of a Port Authority Act to manage, regulate, and develop ports in Guyana.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, Ambassador of France to Guyana, Oliver Plaçon, French Senator and Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces, Cédric Perrin, and Senators André Guiol and Olivier Cigolotti, Jeanne Mengotti from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colonel Emmanuel Rigault, and other French officials.
