Police in Regional Division No. 3 are probing an alleged armed robbery committed on Saturday against 40-year-old businessman Teyon McPhoy of Zeelugt North, East Bank Essequibo.

The incident reportedly occurred around 13:40 hrs at McPhoy’s residence, where he operates a Superbet outlet.

Police Headquarters reported that earlier on Saturday, at around 12:00 hrs, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Deol Narayan of No. 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice — visited the outlet and placed several bets, all of which he lost. He later began crediting bets From McPhoy amounting to approximately $140,000.

Sometime after, Narayan requested to use the washroom and was escorted to the back of the premises. A few minutes later, he allegedly confronted McPhoy with a handgun and demanded money. Narayan reportedly managed to take a quantity of $5,000 notes from a nearby wooden box.

Police said a scuffle ensued and the suspect attempted to flee during which the handgun fell to the ground.

Narayan then ran out of the shop and entered a motorcar in an attempt to escape. McPhoy, who had picked up the fallen firearm, allegedly discharged about three rounds at the fleeing vehicle.

The getaway attempt ended when Narayan crashed into a heap of sand a short distance away. McPhoy followed and opened the driver’s door and discovered the suspect bleeding from a head injury.

Police were summoned and upon arrival, McPhoy handed over a .32 pistol. Both the suspect and victim were taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where Narayan was treated and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a serious condition.

The scene was processed, and investigators recovered one suspected .32 spent shell, one warhead, and one live .32 round of ammunition.

McPhoy has since been placed in custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

The first game of the Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) saw Guyana Amazon Warriors women beat Trinbago Knight Riders women by six runs.

It was a closely contested thriller at Providence Stadium to get the competition up and running, with the match going into the final over with Knight Riders needing 16 off the final six deliveries to get off to a winning start.

Kiwi seamer Molly Penfold was tasked with bowling the final over of the game for the Warriors, the first two balls resulting in run outs as Shikha Pandey and Zaida James tried to scrabble runs that weren’t there.

Salonee Dangore managed to scythe a four away off the third ball of the last over but it wasn’t enough to get the Knight Riders over the line as they fell short of the Warriors 129/7 by six runs. Penfold holding her nerve admirably to give Warriors a winning start and see them head to the top of the table.

Deandra Dottin captained the Knight Riders but last year’s defeated WCPL finalists came up second best to Shemaine Campbelle’s impressive Warriors outfit, Dottin herself fell caught and bowled to eventual Player of the Match Laura Harris, the Australian picking up 3/25 with the ball.

Stafanie Taylor top scored for the Warriors after they were inserted by Dottin, 45 off 37 balls with five fours and a six before she also fell to a run out five runs shy of a half century.

Twenty-year-old debutant, Realeanna Grimmond supported with 33 off 36 at the top of the order but regular flurries of wickets saw a par total of 129/7 posted.

Once Lizelle Lee was stumped off Ashmini Munisar in the Knight Riders reply for 36 the Trinbago outfit faded with the bat, sixteen wickets falling in the match as the WCPL got off to an entertaining start. (CPLT20)

STATEMENT BY THE BAR ASSOCIATION OF GUYANA ON TABULATION OF VOTES AND RECOUNT PROCESS OF THE 2025 GENERAL AND REGIONAL ELECTIONS HELD ON 1ST SEPTEMBER, 2025

The Bar Association of Guyana, through its election observation team, has continued to monitor the process of the General and Regional Elections through tabulation of votes on statements of poll and then through the recount, of Sub-district 4 of District 4 and 77 boxes of District 5, sought by A Partnership for National Unity and conducted by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

The Bar Association wishes to congratulate GECOM for the manner in which the tabulation and recount were carried out, the efficiency with which they were completed and for the transparency of the process. It recognizes that GECOM officials worked with patience and calm in trying circumstances, including heat and space, without adding any undue escalation.

The Bar Association is also satisfied that GECOM addressed challenges and difficulties professionally, and within the law.

The Bar Association of Guyana wishes to thank its volunteers for their selfless dedication to observing the process at every stage. It urges all political parties who contested the elections to accept the results of those elections for a peaceful and speedy return to normalcy.

Plans are well underway to ensure the smooth hosting of the swearing-in ceremony for the Ninth Executive President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, as he assumes office for a second term.

In anticipation of an official declaration by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 7, at 10 AM at State House.

With thousands of guests expected to attend, persons are asked to be seated by 9:30 AM. Robust security measures have been implemented to ensure the safety and comfort of all. As part of these measures, the carrying of weapons, including licensed firearms, is strictly prohibited.

Guests are also kindly advised not to bring bags and to limit personal items to essentials only. This will allow for smoother security checks and a more efficient entry process. Visitors to the State House will be accommodated at the Carmichael Street entrance.

Adequate parking will be facilitated along the eastern and western carriageways of Carmichael Street, as well as beyond Camp and Vlissengen Road, for persons attending the cultural ceremony on the seawall.

At the swearing-in ceremony, the President will give a feature address, which will mark the beginning of his second term in office. Following immediately after the inauguration at State House, the President, accompanied by a Joint Services procession, will head to the Kingston Seawall Esplanade for a brunch and cultural display from 11 AM to 1 PM. Permit me to thank our members and supporters for their support during the 2025 General and Regional Elections. I take this opportunity to wish all Guyanese the best, regardless of the party you supported.

In spite of the manifest deficiencies in the electoral system, including a bloated voters’ list and the lack of biometrics, our Party decided to participate in the Elections held on the 1st September, 2025. The deficiencies to which I refer undermine any basis for the creation of a framework for free, fair and transparent elections. The number of irregularities which have been discovered and documented gives legitimacy to the position that the elections were NOT free and fair. These elections did not reflect the will of the people of Guyana.

The clear purpose of the APNU Coalition was to contest the Elections, and if it were victorious, amongst other things was to change the electoral system and the other procedures to ensure free and fair elections. The inadequacies and imperfections of the existing electoral system are well known, locally, regionally and internationally. A brief glance of the report of the international observer groups which have monitored elections in Guyana have repeatedly identified and pointed to, for example, it’s well-documented that the 1997 elections in Guyana were marred by controversy and allegations of fraud, particularly regarding the tabulation of results in Region #4 (Georgetown). The Organisation of American States (OAS) observed these elections and criticized the vote-counting process, contributing to concerns about the integrity and credibility of the outcome. For instance, the OAS documented irregularities and procedural concerns in the tabulation process.

The Commonwealth Observer Group, December 1997, “We believe that the shortcomings contributed to the diminished credibility of the election results that were being announced by the (Election) Commission.”

The European Union’s Election Observation Mission has been scathing in its report of the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections, saying that though Election Day was peaceful, the playing field was not even. EU Chief Observer Robert Biedron accused the PPP/C of blurring the line between state and party using state resources and unchecked financing to give itself a massive head start.

By contesting the Election, our Party has retained occupancy of political space that provides the opportunity to contest against the dictatorial tendencies of the PPP/C and advance the cause of social and economic justice, free and fair elections and a democratic culture in Guyana.

As a major political party, it is necessary that we maintain and utilize that space for the ongoing mobilization of our people and all relevant forces in order to attain the kind of society in which the mores and the culture of democracy are firmly embedded.

As a consequence of September 1, 2025 Elections, which were NOT free and fair, our Party has found itself in virgin territory of not being the governing Party or the main opposition Party. APNU, of which the PNC is a major Party, has a wealth of experience in weathering the political storm. We will come through this and we will be stronger and better. We will continue the journey towards the goal of making this society a prosperous and equal one in which all of our citizens can enjoy all of the rights and benefits of the national resources of the nation. I give you the assurance that APNU will never abandon or desert you, however difficult the circumstances.

I am sure that the members of the Coalition will not disagree with me if I reach for an historical moment in the politics of this country. The People’s National Congress was also knocked down more than six decades ago, even though it had managed to win 41.1% of the electorate. Yet the PNC picked itself up, and through the committed support of its members and with hard work and dedication, it succeeded in achieving government approximately 3 years later. After the PNC’s major loss in 1961, the Leader of the Party, L.F.S. Burnham, at a mass rally at Bourda Green, asked his supporters, “Will you not watch with me for one hour?” Similarly, I appeal to all APNU supporters to watch with us at this critical hour. We are like the oak tree. We will re-emerge better and stronger.

Two taxi drivers and a 16-year-old student are being investigated in relation to the alleged rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl. Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred in June 2025 on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).

Police identified the suspects as Matthew Burnett called Delwyn, a 24-year-old taxi driver from Diamond New Scheme, EBD, and Rakchand Harnath called Kevin, a 30-year-old taxi driver from Best Village, West Coast Demerara. The 16-year-old student is also from Best Village.

According to the Police release, the victim and the suspects are known to each other and would communicate via WhatsApp.

The girl was reportedly raped on two occasions. The Police release also noted that the girl told investigators that the suspects had made videos of her having sex with them without her knowing and threatened that they would post the videos.

The victim and her mother were referred to the Child Care and Protection Agency.

The Private Sector Commission’s Observer Mission witnessed the entirety of the recount in sub-districts of Regions 4 and 5 and is pleased to report that the process was conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner. The exercise was well-organized, secure, and closely monitored, with GECOM staff adhering strictly to the Representation of the People Act (ROPA).

We commend GECOM for its hard work and dedication over the last two days, as well as the commitment of party officials and both local and international observers who remained present throughout. All stakeholders worked tirelessly around the clock, ensuring that the process was transparent and that any issues raised were addressed promptly and fairly.

Our observers, who have been rotating shifts alongside international missions, can confirm that no legitimate signs of tampering were observed. The recount closely mirrored the results of the original tabulation, with the total change in votes amounting to less than 0.5%, underscoring both the accuracy and professionalism of GECOM’s work.

We also observed room for improvement in the way discrepancies were raised and in the understanding of what constitutes a spoiled or valid ballot. Many concerns were promptly clarified by the law and GECOM’s guidance material, and with more education for agents, the process could be made even more efficient.

This recount has underscored the strength of our electoral system. It demonstrates that the will of the people was accurately recorded on Election Day and has served as an important confidence-building measure following the challenges of 2020. It also shows the improvements GECOM has made since 2020, with stronger systems and greater transparency.

The PSC looks forward to the timely completion of the electoral process, the official declaration of results, and the welcoming of a new government. The 2025 General and Regional Elections have reaffirmed the resilience of Guyana’s electoral system and strengthened public confidence in GECOM’s capacity to deliver free, fair, and credible elections. Antigua and Barbuda Falcons nearly lost grip of the last-ball thriller in Bridgetown with their over-reliance on singles and doubles in a tense chase of 188, but Shamar Springer hit the winning runs for them to strengthen their third spot on the points table.

It meant Barbados Royals continued to scrape the bottom without a single victory to their name so far this season, as they failed to defend 187 after Brandon King’s 98 not out.

Royals captain Rovman Powell thought they had enough runs at the halfway mark but two Royals fielders went on to drop six catches – Chris Green four and Daniel Sams two – which hampered their chances of getting their first victory. Royals have just one point from six games season, their qualification chances narrowing with every loss.

Andries Gous was the leading man for Falcons, starring with an unbeaten 85 off 53 with five fours and four sixes, but he barely got strike in the last over, off which they needed 12.

Powell rolled the dice by giving the ball to Sherfane Rutherford, who had last bowled 26 T20s ago, against England in June.

Rutherford started with three wides in his first four balls before bowling hard lengths on a straight line.

Three off two became two off one when Imad Wasim attempted a second after hacking the ball to long-on but a quick collection of the throw, turning around and hitting the stumps from Quinton de Kock found Imad short.

Local boy Springer calmly collected two next ball and sealed Falcons’ first win away from home this season.

Openers Gous and Amir Jangoo had given Falcons a quick-fire start in the chase by pummeling 38 in the first four before Jangoo was cleaned up by a slower delivery from Sams, and Ramon Simmonds sent back Karima Gore.

Green put down two chances off Kevin Wickham in consecutive overs after the powerplay and once again in the 11th one before Wickham was eventually taken by substitute fielder Kofi James at mid-off for 26.

Needing 78 from 47 from there at over 9.75 an over, Gous, who had brought up his fifty off 32 balls, anchored the chase while Shakib Al Hasan and Fabian Allen holed out after hitting a few boundaries.

Gous belted his fourth six in the 18th over before being dropped next ball by Green to bring it down to 19 from 12 before they sealed victory on the last ball.

When Royals were put in to bat, they crawled their way to 31 for 0 in the powerplay before King took off with boundaries in every over till the halfway mark. De Kock tried to replicate it – and succeeded to an extent – but was run-out for a scratchy 27 off 28.

King then took on Shakib and Imad before smashing Jayden Seales for three sixes in an over to reach 94 off 58 after 16.
