The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) on Sunday took its elections campaign rally to Linden, Region Ten where Candidates from across the region took the stage to endorse President Dr. Irfaan Ali for a second term in office.

Sherry James, a candidate on the party’s list for the Monday, September 1, 2025, elections said “this is the best elections we get because we ain’t get no opposition.

“…they [only] got two people monkeying themselves,” she said taking a jab at leaders of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) parties.

“Linden going red,” she shouted to the cheers of thousand gathered at Sunday’s event.

James struck a powerful chord when she burst out singing Coloured Girl in the Ring, a beloved Caribbean folk tune. Her message was clear – the PPP is inclusive and is not for Indo-Guyanese only.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Dr. Shurdon Murray, a Medical Doctor and Pastor who said “the reality is that Linden is going better and stronger under a new banner and that banner is the PPP/C.”

He emphasized that Dr. Ali is a young vibrant President who has led investments in the Region which saw building of roads and bridges connecting communities which were never before connected.

“He is not just a president but a president with a vision for all Guyanese” Councillor of Hururu, Sonia Williams added.

She highlighted that the PPP/C has delivered on its promises and therefore deserves an opportunity to continue.

“Five years ago, he (the President) had a vision to have one Guyana. At the time we were segregated but look at us right now” pointed out Sarah Gibson, a Candidate of Bamia noted, adding that the PPP/C managed to unite the country.

As such, she said “take your neighbours, take your family and let us vote for the PPP/C.”

The crowd was also addressed by Tedroy Singh of Sand Hills who spoke of massive infrastructure growth and targeted development in health, education and agriculture.

“More importantly, we have seen a govt that delivers and lead with steady hands and clean heart,” he said,

As part of Emancipation celebrations, local author Athalyah Yisrael launched a book, inviting African families to go beyond freedom from chains and toward freedom of identity and spiritual remembrance.

The new book was launched at the ACDA Emancipation Festival. Her debut work, the Creator’s 7 Holy Appointed Seasons: A Practical Guide for African Families in the Diaspora, encourages readers to return to the divine calendar laid out in the Holy Bible, one that existed long before colonialism and slavery.

“It’s not about religion.

“When you know who you are, you look for someone who also knows. That’s how legacy is built…this book is a call to return if we want to say we are truly emancipated,” Yisrael told the News Room on Friday.

She added, “It’s about remembering. It’s about restoring what was buried in the calendar.”

She said the book equips readers with tools to observe the Creator’s original holy seasons—outlined in Leviticus 23—and to reclaim a way of life centered on divine timing, family unity, and cultural truth.

“I began writing this in 2018,” Yisrael shared. “Now, as a mother of four, I feel more grounded. I’ve matured. I realize now [that] our children will do exactly what we do. And if we don’t know who we are, they won’t either.”

She describes her journey as deeply personal. Much of her writing was done when her children were asleep and she could reconnect with her purpose.

Together with her husband, Gabriel Yisrael, she co-founded Outliers Zone Caribbean in 2018, empowering over 17,000 Guyanese families through programs on Financial Independence, Early Retirement, and Legacy Building.

Now, she is expanding that mission from economic liberation to spiritual alignment. The book launch at the Craft Section of the National Park was met with curiosity and conversation. Attendees asked thoughtful questions, connected with the message, and reflected on how much of their culture has been forgotten.

“It was amazing.

“People were asking questions. I feel so fulfilled—it’s doing exactly what it was meant to do,” she said.

As part of the launch celebration, the first 12 copies of the book were sold at a special price of $4,000 (the regular price is $4,500). Visitors also had the chance to meet the author and get insight into the movement behind the message.

Jason Holder turned in a sensational all-round performance on Saturday night, taking 4-19 and striking a boundary off the final ball to seal a two-wicket win for the West Indies over Pakistan in the second T20 International at Central Broward Park in Lauderhill, Florida.

The thrilling win snaps a six-match losing streak for the Caribbean side and levels the three-match series at 1-1 heading into Sunday’s decider.

In a game that saw momentum swing wildly, Holder stood tallest, impacting every phase.

He opened the bowling, removed both Pakistan openers in the powerplay, and later returned to halt a dangerous fifth-wicket partnership between Salman Agha and Hasan Nawaz that had dragged Pakistan to a fighting total.

Holder also took two sharp catches and capped off the night with a clutch finish, smashing a fine-leg boundary off Shaheen Shah Afridi with three needed from the final ball.

West Indies had entered the contest with just two wins in their last 19 completed T20Is and fresh off a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia.

Their most recent loss came in the opening match of the series against Pakistan, but this time, they managed to hold their nerve thanks largely to Holder’s brilliance.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan were limited to 133-9 as Holder wreaked havoc with the ball.

He dismissed Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan early, then came back to remove the well-set Hasan Nawaz for 40 and Mohammad Nawaz late in the innings.

Hasan had earlier clobbered Romario Shepherd for three consecutive sixes in the 15th over, raising hopes of a total above 150, but Pakistan managed just 23 runs in the final five overs as West Indies closed in.

Set a modest target of 134, West Indies struggled against spin. Mohammad Nawaz tore through the top order with figures of 3-14, while Ayub and Sufiyan Muqeem added three more wickets between them, stifling the hosts’ momentum.

Jewel Andrew and Shai Hope got starts, but both failed to accelerate, with Hope scratching his way to 21 off 30 balls.

With wickets tumbling and the asking rate rising, the burden fell on Holder once again. He found support from Gudakesh Motie, who contributed 28 crucial runs, and Romario Shepherd, but the equation boiled down to three needed off the last ball.

Afridi opted for a surprise delivery at the pads instead of wide outside off, and Holder pounced, slicing the ball through fine leg and erupting in jubilation as the crowd roared.

It was a stunning finish to a match that West Indies had seemingly lost control of multiple times, but one which Holder rescued singlehandedly- with bat, ball, and in the field.

West Indies’ youngest ever T20 International player Jewel Andrew has been signed by Cricket Zone USA as an E4 Brand Ambassador.

During the contractual period, 18-year-old Andrew will don the E4 line of products in all forms of cricket, signaling the rising global appeal of the brand, founded and developed by USA-based Guyanese entrepreneur and cricket fanatic, Ravi Etwaroo.

At 18 years, 236 days Andrew became the West Indies’ youngest player in T20 Internationals when he made his debut against Pakistan in Florida on July 31, 2025.

Lusignan played unbeaten to win the Demerara Cricket Board’s Independence T10 Cup on Friday at the LBI Ground.

The champions won all three of their games- the quarter-final, semi-final and final- chasing successfully on every occasion.

Transport finished runners-up in the eight-team tournament

Lusignan got past Helena One and Two, home club LBI and Georgetown side Transport in the final, which concluded under lights.

For their victory, Lusignan carted off G$250,000, Transport collected G$150,000, while the losing semi-finalists Enterprise and LBI took home G$50,000 each.

It was a night filled with bold promises and the usual fiery rhetoric, but leaders of the PNC-dominated APNU Coalition on Saturday night would have expected to deliver their message in front of a massive crowd in New Amsterdam.

This Berbice town has long been a stronghold of the PNC and once attracted massive rallies ahead of elections, but that was not the case this time around.

Presidential Candidate Aubrey Norton and Vice Presidential Candidate Ganesh Mahipaul addressed a crowd that resembled what one might expect at a small community meeting. The meeting was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. but got underway more than two hours later as the party scrambled to draw a crowd.

And when they did start speaking, there was nothing new to hear.

Mahipaul began with a chant he believes is catching on. He invoked “Don’t Vote Fuh Cup,” a song by calypsonian Ras Marcus, to dissuade the crowd from voting for the PPP, whose symbol is the cup. It has been his recent mantra and, if the crowd wasn’t enjoying it, he certainly was.

He then moved on to APNU’s bold promises: raising the minimum wage to $200,000 and increasing the income tax threshold to $400,000.

Norton then took the stage with his traditional bounce and began with a rumour that no one seemed to have heard before — that Juretha Fernandes was being replaced as the Prime Ministerial candidate.

Norton sought to reassure the faithful:

“I have no doubts. At the end of the elections on September 1st, the next Prime Minister will be Juretha Fernandes.”

He then made a push for the votes of his supporters.

“We’re going to overcome and beat the People’s Progressive Party. We have better policies than them,” he declared.

And what are those policies?

“We have developed what we call a people-centred development strategy.”

Among the initiatives he outlined was increasing the old-age pension to $100,000 a month and reducing the pension age to 60.

And then, just after saying that, he admitted the promise was being made to secure power.

“We are in these elections to get political power. We’re not fooling anybody that we don’t want political power.

“We want political power, but we’re going to use that political power to serve you, the people of Guyana.”

He then turned to what appears to be APNU’s signature housing proposal: build houses and allow citizens to rent them.

“I said for a long time we will develop a rent-to-own scheme.”

“…we’re saying that you will pay a rent, and when the rent covers the cost of the house, the house will be transferred to you.”

“…we are also saying to you we will give rent and mortgage assistance so that people can live a comfortable life.”

Norton, who has been in politics for about 50 years, spoke for over an hour, mixing these proposals with scathing personal attacks on the PPP leadership.

He also returned to frequent opposition talking points — corruption, politicisation of the police force, racial discrimination, and poverty under the PPP government.

APNU is struggling to attract donations and keep its campaign machinery running.

The rally’s modest stage, lack of major logistical support, and poor turnout were visible signs of these financial and organisational strains.

Calls to action — including for people to vote early and scrutinise the election — ended the evening.

This is not the kind of showing APNU expected in New Amsterdam. It seemed more like a party scrambling for support than one racing towards victory.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced a series of initiatives for Region One (Barima- Waini) that are expected to lower the cost of living and address poverty.

During a visit to Port Kaituma on Saturday, the President announced that the government will take further steps to reduce energy costs. This move will add to the 15 kilowatts of free electricity already provided to residents,

Additionally, effective August 1, 2025, electricity rates for consumers from the Port Kaituma Power and Light Inc. (PKPL) were reduced by 30 per cent. This is part of a $110 million subsidy already being implemented by the government.

President Ali also said the government has removed the toll at Four Miles, so that trucks, tractors and other vehicles travelling here can do so freely.

In his wide-ranging address to hundreds of residents, many of whom are supporters from the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), President Ali also highlighted significant investments that will transform Port Kaituma. These include a new market, a new housing scheme, and a new wharf facility.

“Your next PPP/C government will invest in a wharf and cold storage facility,” the President said in response to complaints from farmers about spoiled produce.

President Ali further promised more accommodation for nurses and doctors to ensure better healthcare services are accessible throughout the region.

Emphasising the importance of local waterways, President Ali pledged a special initiative to clean and protect rivers and water sources, including the establishment of mechanisms to prevent pollution.

“To enhance water access and quality, the government will also invest in microwater treatment facilities,” the President said.

Meanwhile, focusing on the community of Baramita, the President acknowledged its unique challenges and announced plans to work directly with the church and other stakeholders. Baramita is a remote community plagued by several social issues, including rampant alcoholism and drug abuse.

Apart from a special literacy programme to uplift residents, he emphasised the need to protect residents, improve infrastructure, and accessibility for small miners and farmers.

“We have a poverty reduction strategy to directly address the challenges in Region One and Baramita,” President Ali said.

Additionally, the Head of State disclosed that the government is actively working to establish banking services in Region One to improve financial access and economic opportunity for residents.

And as part of the government’s broader vision for economic development, the President shared plans to make Region One and the Pomeroon, Region Two, the cocoa and coffee capital of the Caribbean.

Beyond this region, the President assured residents that the PPP/C has a plan for every community across Guyana. And he urged residents to embrace the development agenda by voting solidly for the PPP/C at the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections.

“We don’t have an elections strategy, we have a development strategy,” he said.

The third edition of the Kares One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast will reach its crescendo on Sunday, August 3, when the national finals are staged at the National Stadium in Providence.

The action-packed day is set to crown a new champion from four formidable teams, each boasting the quality to lift the coveted trophy.

The intensity of the competition is palpable.

All four remaining sides have navigated a path through approximately 80 teams across Guyana to reach this ultimate stage.

The zone champions – Mahdia (Movements Family) from Essequibo, Titans All-Stars from East Coast Demerara/Georgetown, Montra Jaguars from Berbice, and Eccles All-Stars from East Bank/West Demerara – are all vying for national supremacy.

The cricketing spectacle begins with the first semi-final at 15:30h, pitting defending champions Titans All-Stars against Mahdia (Movements Family).

This will be followed at 17:00h by Montra Jaguars taking on the 2023 champions, Eccles All-Stars.

The grand finale, which will determine the ultimate champion of the Kares One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast, will commence at 19:30h.

Adding to the day’s excitement, a female exhibition match will take place at 13:30h, showcasing the growing talent in women’s tapeball cricket.

Later, at 18:30h, a star-studded exhibition match will feature prominent figures, including Minister Charles Ramson Jr., Kerwin Bollers, West Indies player Tevin Imlach, DJ Stress, Rawle Ferguson, and WR Reaz.

The stakes are considerably higher in the national final, with teams vying for a massive $1.7 million grand prize in addition to the $300,000 zone prize they have already collected.

The national runner-up won’t go home empty-handed, pocketing $700,000 with a trophy and medals, while even the losing semi-finalists will be rewarded $300,000 each.

Cropper Primary delivered a commanding performance to emerge as the Champions of Champions in the Future Warriors Tapeball tournament, which concluded on Saturday at the National Stadium in Providence.

Saturday’s national finals saw the three county champions—Cropper Primary (Berbice), Grove Primary (Demerara), and C.V. Nunes Primary (Essequibo)—battle for national supremacy.

The display of budding talent from all three teams was a pleasing sight, showcasing the depth of youth cricket in Guyana.

Cropper Primary was the dominant force, winning both matches to claim the title deservedly.

The innings was spearheaded by Jayden Garner, who hammered an eye-catching 66 not out off just 22 balls, including six maximums and five fours.

He was ably supported by Anthony Fagelal, who contributed an unbeaten 37 off 23 deliveries, striking three fours and three sixes.

In response, C.V. Nunes struggled to keep pace, reaching 53 for 4 from their allotted eight overs, with Kaysean Doodnauth top-scoring with 19. Khusal Seepaul was the pick of the Cropper bowlers, claiming 3 for 6 from his two overs.

Against Grove Primary, Cropper continued their aggressive batting, racking up another imposing total of 93 for 3.

Fagelal was once again a key contributor, making 48 off 35 balls, while Tejpaul Persaud added a quickfire 24 off 11 deliveries.

Roles Melville bowled well for Grove, taking 2 for 8, but his team’s batting faltered in the chase. Despite a spirited 32 off 17 balls from Joshua Ramotar, Grove could not reach the target.

In the other match of the day, C.V. Nunes Primary posted a strong 122 for no loss against Grove Primary, with Zach Madholall (41*) and Vidal Narine (39*) leading the charge.

Grove gave a spirited effort in response but fell short at 75 for 6, with Wayne Green (26), Sherwin Bunbury (15), and Daniel France (14*) making contributions. Kavroy Garrway took 2 for 9 and Madholall returned to claim 2 for 15 for C.V. Nunes.

As champions, Cropper Primary has earned a unique opportunity: they will now face the Guyana Amazon Warriors in a novelty match during the home leg of the Caribbean Premier League, scheduled from September 6-14.
