The fate of this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be sealed at The Oval on Sunday.

England need another 324 runs to pull off the second-biggest run chase in their history and win 3-1; India need eight wickets – or nine, in the improbable event that Chris Woakes walks out to bat one-handed – to square the series.

The draw is no longer on the table.

India are the favourites, and owe that status to four men: Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored his sixth century, and the first of the match; Akash Deep, the nightwatcher whose maiden Test fifty wore England’s seamers down; Ravindra Jadeja, who passed 500 runs for the series; and Washington Sundar, whose late blitz took the target from 335 to 374 inside five overs.

England have been here before.

They chased 371 in the first Test of this series with five wickets in hand, and cruised to 378 against India at Edgbaston three years ago without breaking a sweat.

A punchy opening stand between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett shaved 50 runs off the target as the shadows lengthened, and England will not be overawed by scoreboard pressure.

But Crawley’s dismissal in the final over of the day swung the pendulum firmly in India’s favour.

It was Mohammed Siraj, the last seamer standing in this series, who delivered a moment of high skill and high drama.

With two balls remaining, Siraj pushed Jaiswal back to deep square leg, a bluff to mask the searing 84mph/135kph yorker which followed, and crashed into off stump.

It will be a huge test of both teams’ character, skill and resilience as the series heads into its 24th – and surely final – day.

A draw would be a superb achievement for India under new leadership, not least from 2-1 down and on the ropes in Manchester; for England, a series win would be their first against a “big three” opponent under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

In Woakes’ absence, this was a brutally tough day for their three greenhorn seamers, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton, who bowled 79 out of 88 overs between them in India’s second innings.

Ollie Pope did his best to rotate them but the workload was immense, particularly without a specialist spinner.

The Guyana Association of Bankers Inc (GABI), in a statement, has clarified that all licensed commercial banks in Guyana are guided by strict regulatory obligations, critical to the preservation of the financial system’s integrity. 

The statement from the association comes as the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party has called for the boycott of two commercial banks. The party is led by United States-sanctioned businessman, Azruddin Mohamed, and candidates of the party have been faced with account closures as a means of de-risking by the banks.

“What a time to be alive, to see the massive transformation and growth in my country.”

The words of Guyanese Olympian, boxer Keevin Allicock as he endorsed President Irfaan Ali for a second term.

Allicock, who became the first Guyanese boxer to compete at an Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 since John Douglas in 1996, praised the government for its investment across sectors and noted the administration’s commitment to moving the country forward.

He is the second from the sport of boxing to support President Ali’s second term bid, following on the heels of Guyana’s lone Olympic medalist Michael Parris last week.

“I support His Excellency for a second term. I believe in his leadership,” Allicock, a Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist affirmed.

“I’ve seen the development. These are not things people sit and tell me, this is not something I have to be advised upon, I’m here and I’m seeing!”

“A couple of years ago it was never like this, but now we’re seeing it and I’m truly honoured and grateful to be a part of the growth.”

Allicock hailed the leadership of President Ali, Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo and Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips for delivering on their promises over the last five years, adding that they have a great vision for the country.

The proud son of Albouystown also highlighted the “tremendous job” of Sport Minister Charles Ramsson Jr. and his team at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in collaborating with associations and athletes, and placing great emphasis on infrastructure development in sport.

“I know of a lot of athletes who have been getting assistance to further their careers. At this point in time, it’s far better than where we were and I know it will get even better over the next five years,” Allicock asserted.

In 2025, a record G$8 billion was allocated for sport in the national budget, which was a record-high G$1.3 trillion.

From 2020 to 2025, under the stewardship of President Ali, the Government of Guyana has allocated an unprecedented $21.61 billion to sport development, and for Allicock, the result of that investment is very much visible.

“The money that government has been injecting in sports, you’re seeing where it’s going, you’re seeing the development, you’re seeing the changes, you’re seeing young people from those areas that didn’t have opportunities are now getting opportunities.”

Since assuming office in August 2020, President Ali has always touted Guyana as a hub for major sport and entertainment events, and the country’s potential as the go-to eco-tourism destination.

Allicock is excited by that prospect, further underlining his decision to support the incumbent for another term.

With this in mind, the national boxer is encouraging fellow Guyanese to make the right decision on September 1 when they go to the polls.

In what was a powerful affirmation of Guyana’s rich African-Guyanese heritage and the nation’s commitment to nurturing its youth, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Friday pledged financial support to strengthen the work of the Organisation for Social and Health Advancement in Guyana (OSHAG) and the rhythms of the Conga Nya Drumming Group.

The head of state made the announcement at a vibrant cultural celebration to commemorate the 187th celebration of Emancipation Day at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School on Friday evening.

Joining him was the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Dr David Lammy, and India’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr Amit Telang, among other dignitaries.

Speaking directly to the organisation’s leadership and its members, President Ali commended their outreach and work with young people, describing it as “enormous.”

To strengthen those efforts, he announced a $1 million contribution to support the drumming group’s development programmes, along with an additional $1.5 million to boost the OSHAG’s ambassadorial programme.

“Your ambassadorial programme is second to none,” the president expressed. “Your investment in young people, championing the cause of young people is most admirable. That is why we will also support your ambassadorial programme.”

OSHAG plays a central role in promoting and celebrating African culture, and they collaborate with the Conga Nya Drumming Group. Friday’s event was organised by the OSHAG in collaboration with the government through the Region Six Regional Democratic Council (RDC), to mark African-Guyanese emancipation from slavery.

President Ali also used the celebration to remind those in attendance to be grateful for the enormous sacrifices their ancestors made in the struggle to pave the path to a brighter future for their descendants.

“Our ancestors never had the luxury of free education or the opportunities that we enjoy today,” he said. “They endured pain so that we can now enjoy the benefits. Let us honour that sacrifice by being selfless, not selfish.”

The president also urged the nation to speak out against ongoing global injustices, highlighting the struggles of Haitians, “who paid for their freedom and still are not free.”

The European Union has deployed an observation mission for Guyana’s 2025 General and Regional Elections on September 1. The mission, led by European Parliamentarian from Poland Robert Biedroń, will observe and analyse all aspects of the electoral process.

“Our role is to observe the entire electoral process

“We are here to assess whether the election is being conducted in a fair and transparent manner,” Mr. Biedroń said at a press conference in Kingston, Georgetown, on Friday.

After the elections, Mr. Biedroń affirmed, an “impartial and objective” assessment of the elections will be provided. He emphasised that the EU team follows a strict code of conduct and that the body’s sole concern is the integrity of the process.

The observation team comprises 50 members, some of whom are already in Guyana. Mr. Biedroń and some of those team members already here have been engaging key stakeholders, including the political parties contesting the elections and officials from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). On election day, the team is expected to fan out across the country.

Two days after the election- that is, on September 3- the observation mission will issue a preliminary statement on the elections. A comprehensive final report, which will include recommendations for possible electoral reform, will be published and presented approximately two months after the conclusion of the process.

That report is likely to address matters such as campaign financing, media access, and the timely tabulation of results.

This is the second time a full-fledged observation mission has been deployed to Guyana and has the mandate of assessing the elections. In 2020, an EU observation mission made 26 recommendations for improving national elections. T

wo of the 26 recommendations were fully implemented, while many more were partially implemented. Mr. Biedroń did not want to comment on the recommendations made before, noting that the team’s focus is on the 2025 elections. He, however, acknowledged that implementing these recommendations may take some time.

Six political parties are contesting the 2025 General and Regional Elections. The elections for the presidency, 65 seats in the National Assembly, and 10 regional councils.

The Lusignan Golf Club is back in full swing as the second half of the 2025 golf season kicks off with the GMIN Ventures Guyana Inc. Golf Tournament on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

With the rainy season now behind and brilliant sunshine bathing the coast, excitement is high and the course is more beautiful than ever.

Thanks to weeks of clear skies, the Lusignan course is in pristine condition- lush greens, dry fairways, and a cool coastal breeze- setting the perfect stage for a thrilling return to competitive play.

Golfers are eager to dust off their clubs and showcase their skills in what promises to be one of the most exciting events of the season.

The tournament begins with an 08:00h tee-off in a Medal Play format over 18 holes, and competition is expected to be fierce.

Prizes will be awarded for Best Net (top three), Overall Best Gross, as well as special challenges like Nearest to the Flag on Hole #4 and Longest Drive on Hole #3.

On the morning of the event, all players must report to the clubhouse to collect scorecards, pay tournament fees, and proceed to their assigned tee boxes.

The tournament officially starts with the sound of the horn at 08:00h, and the prize presentation is scheduled for around 12:30h.

The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) welcomes the recent Executive Orders issued by the United States Government that reduce the reciprocal tariff rate applied to Guyanese exports from 38% to 15%.

The GMSA extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of Guyana for its active engagement and representation throughout the negotiation process. The Association also acknowledges that discussions remain ongoing and expresses its full support for continued diplomatic and trade efforts aimed at securing further reductions of these tariffs.
