Insurance giant NALICO/NAFICO, a subsidiary of Edward B. Beharry and Company Limited, is the first major financial institution to come on board with the joint cricket gear project undertaken by administrator Anil Beharry and Kishan Das of the USA.

At a simple but significant ceremony held recently, the cheque was presented to Anil Beharry by an employee of NALICO/NAFICO, who stated that her company is impressed with the work of this noble venture, hence the donation.

She also indicated that her company continues to give back to the communities through sport and other forms.

“NALICO/NAFICO has 19 branches across the length and breath of Guyana, providing a service of excellence with unbeatable rates. We are very thankful for the timely intervention from the major insurance company. The cash will be used to purchase cricket gear for young and talented cricketers in Berbice,” Anil Beharry stated.

“This initiative will continue to strive to make every community a safer and better place. We are pleased to be part of the development of young cricketers in Guyana. Our aim is to keep them off the streets and get them actively involve in sports, cricket in particular.”

Through the cricket gear project, G$610,000 in cash and equipment, namely coloured uniforms, stumps, trophies, cricket shoes, batting pads, bats, batting gloves, thigh pads, wicket keeping pads, arm guards, chest pads, gear bags, bat rubbers, helmets, fiber glass bat, floppy hat, white cricket balls, red cricket balls, bat cone and footballs have been distributed.

In addition to the above, gear valued over G$600,000 was donated by Sheik Mohamed, former national wicket keeper/batsman.

“All cash collected is being used to purchase cricket gear requested and not available at the time,” Anil Beharry highlighted.

To date, 94 players, male and female, from all three counties of Guyana have benefitted directly from cash and equipment, while many others benefitted indirectly.

In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area benefitted from two used bats. Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenam Cricket Committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard also received one box of red cricket balls each, Cold Fusion Cricket Club 13 color uniforms, while RHCCCC received six boxes of balls, 15 white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket keeping gloves, two sets of stumps and bails.

Other beneficiaries are The Essequibo Cricket Board, the Town of Lethem, youth coach Travis Persaud, male and female teams playing the traditional hardball and softball in the Upper Corentyne area, Number 65 Young Titans with 30 T-Shirts, Just Try Cricket Club, Wakenaam Cricket Academy, Shamar Joseph, Nehemiah Hohenkirk, Shamar Apple, Leguan Cricket Committee, Tucber Park Cricket Club, Malteenoes Sports Club, Kendall’s Union Cricket Club, Lower Corentyne, Corentyne Comprehensive, JC Chandisingh Secondary Schools, Thaddeus Lovell, GCC and Bush Lot United Sports Club.

Anil Beharry added: “Cricket related items, used or new, are distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent spotting is being done across the country and club leaders also assist to identify same. Progressive and well managed cricket clubs with a youth programme, will also benefit.”

The elimination rounds of the second qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games 2025 concluded on Saturday, with 24 countries fiercely competing for a coveted spot in Asunción, Paraguay.

Among them, Guyana’s Lucas Chung proudly took to the field, representing our country with skill, determination and sportsmanship.

After a strong start in his match against Jacob Mighty of Jamaica, Chung led 2-0 after the first end. However, despite a tightly contested battle, Mighty ultimately advanced to the next round.

The competition continued with eliminations from Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Peru, leading to a thrilling final line-up featuring Bolivia, Venezuela, Cuba and Ecuador for the championship showdown on March 23.

Despite the result, Chung remains positive and determined. Reflecting on the experience, he shared:

“Competing on the world stage and achieving my personal best score of 580 is something I will always cherish. This tournament has been an incredible learning opportunity, and I am grateful for the chance to connect with fellow archers from across the Americas. I look forward to more international competitions and continuing to grow as an athlete.”

Archery Guyana President Vidushi Persaud-cKinnon praised Lucas Chung for his dedication, resilience and achievement in representing Guyana on the international stage.

She acknowledged that while elimination is disappointing, true champions rise after setbacks.

She highlighted his 18^th birthday milestone, emphasising that this is just the beginning of his journey, and expressed confidence in his continued growth and success.

She also extended heartfelt appreciation to Lucas’s family- Andrew, Christy and Leianna- for their unwavering support, recognising their sacrifices and role in his achievements.

She reassured the Chung Family who are all present in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that Lucas’ experience in this competition will only propel him forward, and with their encouragement, his best is yet to come.

Persaud-McKinnon reaffirmed Archery Guyana’s pride in Lucas and commitment to standing by him as he continues his athletic journey.

Despite the loss, Lucas Chung performed admirably against an opponent with significantly more competition experience and the advantage of prior training camp participation.

Persaud-McKinnon acknowledged this, emphasising that Lucas still delivered a commendable performance.

She also responded to the wildcard selection update, expressing disappointment but respect for the decision and extending congratulations to Puerto Rico for securing the men’s wildcard spot.

She reinforced Archery Guyana’s gratitude for the opportunity to compete at this level and the valuable experience gained.

Finally, she expressed appreciation to the organisers in Buenos Aires and to World Archery Americas and in particular, Secretary General Mr. Sergio Font for his dedication and efforts in supporting the competition.

Archery Guyana extends its sincere appreciation to the President Godfrey Munroe and Executive Committee of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for their continuous support of Archery and the development of young athletes.

Their commitment to sport and athlete development has played a crucial role in providing opportunities like these for Guyana’s representatives to shine on the international stage.

As Lucas Chung returns home, his journey continues, fuelled by experience, resilience, and the support of his family, federation, and country. Archery Guyana stands firmly behind him, ready for the next steps ahead.

The schedule for the highly anticipated 2025 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has been officially confirmed.

This year’s tournament will take place from Thursday August 14 to Sunday September 21, bringing top-tier T20 cricket action to six host nations: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.

A total of 34 matches will be played, with each of the six teams competing in 10 group-stage fixtures.

The knockout rounds will be held at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, promising an electrifying conclusion to the competition.

All six teams will host home matches, ensuring fans across the region can experience the excitement firsthand.

AirBadminton is an exciting new development initiative aimed at making badminton accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Designed for play on hard, grass and sand surfaces in parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches, this initiative aligns with the global vision to expand the sport.

With the support of Badminton Pan Am, the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) hosted an inaugural AirBadminton Tournament on March 22, 2025, at St. Cuthbert’s Mission.

The location was chosen as part of GBA’s ongoing development efforts, following an introduction to the sport and equipment donation to the community in 2022.

The tournament was played in the triples format (one girl, two boys) with no age restrictions.

Each team’s captain was a girl, and teammates were selected through a random draw by the team captains.
