Bretnol Greenidge, a 31-year-old resident of Bamboo Drive, Meadowbrook, Georgetown, died on Saturday after he was involved in an accident.

Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 15:52 hrs Saturday.

A 17-year-old unlicensed driver reportedly drove a Nissan Note (#PYY 3577) south along the eastern side of the east carriageway at the Takuba Public Road, Meadowbrook. The driver alleged that Greenidge was riding without a helmet and “in a zig-zag” manner as he was proceeding north on the western side of the carriageway.

Greenidge reportedly slid on some sand on the road surface and lost control of the motorcycle. He then fell onto the road surface and into the path of the car.

He sustained injuries and soon after, the Ambulance Service and Emergency Medical Technicians arrived on the scene.

The motorcyclist was examined and contact was made with a doctor who pronounced the motorcyclist dead. Investigations continue.

We share and enjoy our culinary delights and cuisine, and the ERC recognizes that admixture, among others, continues to enrich our identity as ‘One People’ living in a multicultural homeland.  

This year’s theme “Expressing our Culture and Creativity as One Guyana” gives perspective and reverberates with our shared cultural diversity and peaceful co-existence reminding us of the  extensive advances and resilience our people demonstrated and gained for five and a half decades as a Republic. While we acknowledge the progress made since attaining republican status, GAWU emphasises the importance of remaining mindful of the ongoing challenges faced by the working class within our nation. Recent years have witnessed notable economic growth, and we seek to share that in our nation’s patrimony. Such questions revolve around a decent standard of living and improvements to the well-being and welfare of Guyanese. We recognise these matters are receiving active attention from the government.

On this Republic Day, we also advocate for unity across all sectors of society, particularly emphasising solidarity among the working people of Guyana. Our union firmly believes that genuine national progress will only be realised when every Guyanese, irrespective of their background, can partake in the wealth our nation has rightfully earned.

We extend a formal and unequivocal apology to the Leader of the Opposition and members of the Opposition over the failure to issue invitations to the 55th Republic Flag Raising Ceremony.

We also extend our sincere apologies to His Excellency, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, for the regrettable embarrassment this oversight has caused.

The responsibility for coordinating and distributing invitations rests solely with the Office of the Director of Culture, and this regrettable oversight is entirely attributable to our office.

This was not a deliberate act of exclusion. Invitations were duly extended to the Opposition in 2024, and there was no intent to disregard or undermine their participation in this year’s national event.

We take this matter seriously and are committed to ensuring that all state functions reflect the principles of inclusivity and respect for all stakeholders. Moving forward, stringent measures will be implemented to prevent such oversights and uphold the integrity of our national celebrations.

England’s Champions Trophy bid began with a damaging defeat. Australia pulled off an epic chase of 352 to counter Ben Duckett’s 165 in Lahore.

Opener Duckett took England to 351-8 – the highest score in Champions Trophy history – only for Josh Inglis to hit a sensational 120 not out from 86 balls to complete the chase with five wickets and 15 balls to spare.

It was the highest score England have failed to defend in one-day internationals, made worse by the fact they had their old rivals 136-4 at one stage.

From there Inglis, Australia’s number five born and raised in Yorkshire, put on 146 in 116 balls with Alex Carey to drag his side back into the contest.

Carey, having been dropped on 49, was caught for 69 with 70 runs needed from 51 balls and Inglis took charge.

He flogged England for six sixes – the third bringing up his first ODI century in 77 balls and the sixth sealing the highest successful chase in a global 50-over tournament.

It compounded fears England failed to capitalise fully on being 200-2 after 30 overs on a fine batting pitch – a surface that only improved under the lights.

Jos Buttler’s England now have little room for manoeuvre in their final two group-stage fixtures, against Afghanistan on Wednesday and South Africa next Saturday, if they are to finish in the top two and reach the semi-finals. (BBC)

A new $277.9 million Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court was commissioned in Region One on Friday, signalling another significant milestone in improving access to judicial services locally.

The facility is within walking distance from the township and will serve far-flung communities across the region including White Water and Tobago Hill.

Acting President, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips was on site for the commissioning ceremony.

He was joined by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC; Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag), Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, and Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George.

The prime minister affirmed the PPP/C administration’s dedication to ensuring the constitutional rights of every Guyanese are realised in practice and not just on paper.

“Today, our government reaffirms our commitment to these principles by bringing judicial services closer to the people of Region One. No longer should anyone have to endure long, costly journeys to urban centres in search of justice,” he stated.

The PM added that this focus on equal access extends beyond the justice sector, encompassing every aspect of national development.

He referenced several development projects that fall under his gamut, such as the ICT Access and E-Services Project, which bridges the digital divide in hinterland and remote communities, and the Solar Home Systems Project, which has brought reliable electricity to 140,000 citizens in hinterland and remote areas.

“These are all part of a holistic approach that supports other development initiatives such as those we see today, which are directly contributing to the strengthening of the administration of justice and are crucial in ensuring that the courts in our hinterland function with the same level of efficiency as those in our urban centres,” he said.

AG Nandlall outlined the government’s strides thus far in expanding access to legal services.

A Deeds and Commercial Registries Authority office was established in Mabaruma last year to ensure residents no longer need to travel to Georgetown or Essequibo to access services like business registration and registration of deed polls.

Similar offices have also been established in Bartica, Lethem and Port Kaituma, with plans to have one in each of the ten administrative regions.

He also mentioned the construction of Magistrate’s Courts in other remote areas like Mahdia, Bartica, Vigilance, and Port Kaituma.

“This is by the design. Our government plans to ensure that every citizen of our country wheresoever geographically located must, as a matter of right, enjoy equally with his counterparts, wherever they are…the same quality and quantity of services,” he said.

The legal affairs minister said the new court is an undisputed illustration of the government’s commitment to the rule of law and represents its strong working relationship with the judiciary.

He said these courts are on par with international standards and are equipped with modern features such as audio/visual recording and virtual hearing facilities.

Substantial investments are also being made in software to enable electronic litigation so that legal proceedings can be digitised and streamlined.

The AG also pointed to legislative efforts like the Criminal Procedure (Plea Discussion, Plea Agreement and Assistance Agreement) Act 2024 and the new Criminal Law Procedure (Paper Committals) Act 2024, aimed at streamlining the judicial process.

“From every conceivable perspective, our government has been working diligently in partnership with the judiciary to deliver to the people of Guyana a quality justice system and a justice system that our people deserve,” the AG said.

The event was also marked by the launch of the first-ever flag of the judiciary. It features horizontal red, creamy and black bars, complemented with the image of Lady Justice.

The flag flies as a beaming symbol of the court’s mission to uphold the rule of law, and its vision to encourage and maintain public trust and confidence by exemplifying accountability, and efficiency in the judicial system.

The Royal International Hotel officially opened for business on Friday. The hotel adds 241 rooms to Guyana’s room stock and currently employs 50 persons, most of whom are Guyanese.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond said the hotel further strengthens Guyana’s position as a premiere destination for business and leisure travelers.

She said the government continues to place significant emphasis on boosting the country’s room stock because this positions Guyana as a strong contender for major international events and conferences. She added that the major events being hosted in our country have significantly increased visitor arrivals, a figure she anticipates will exceed 400,000 in 2025.

“Each of these establishments is instrumental in shaping an integrated tourism ecosystem that is essential for the long-term success of our industry,” she noted.

She encouraged the hotel’s management team to uphold the highest hospitality standards, emphasising that the facility represents the brand, ‘Destination Guyana’.

“Your commitment to excellence will determine the experiences and perceptions of our visitors,” the minister stressed.

She urged the hotel to actively collaborate with local tour operators to develop comprehensive pre-booked packages for guests. She also challenged the hotel to incorporate local culture, art, and cuisine into their offerings.

Minister Walrond highlighted a recent study that featured 30 local tour operators. She revealed that through those operators, over 6000 tours were booked and over 14,000 persons travelled to various destinations in the country.

“The Government of Guyana will continue to partner strongly with the private sector to stimulate travel,” Minister Walrond emphasised.

With just under a week remaining until the return of the Caribbean Boxing Championship, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has appointed Seon Bristol as manager of the national team set to compete in St. Lucia from February 27 to March 3.

Bristol, the GBA’s Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, is also the nephew of former Commonwealth middleweight champion Kenny Bristol.

Returning after a four-year hiatus, the Caribbean Boxing Championship remains the region’s premier amateur boxing showcase.

With a rich history of success, Guyana last captured the overall championship title in 2018 on home soil and delivered a strong performance in Trinidad and Tobago the following year.

Now, the nation is determined to reclaim its dominance.

Spearheading the squad is Olympian and three-time Caribbean champion Keevin Allicock (57kg), who remains unbeaten in the tournament.

He is joined by Sharquain James (67kg), Travis Inverary (71kg), Emanuel Pompey (92kg) and Aluko Bess (86kg).

Heavyweight standouts Abiola Jackman (80+kg) and Zidnan Wray (91kg) will also be part of the list of boxers heading to St. Lucia, along with South American Games bronze medallist Desmond Amsterdam (75kg).
