Police captured two suspects involved in different armed robberies along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) on Monday night.

Police Headquarters reported that the first robbery occurred at a Clonbrook, ECD barbershop at about 18:50 hrs.

Here, a 30-year-old barber was robbed of two gold chains worth $1 million and $25,000 cash. Two customers were robbed of $180,000 cash and two phones.

It is alleged that four men arrived at the business place. One entered the shop first, requesting a haircut. Soon after, three others entered armed with what appeared to be pistols.

The gunmen pointed the weapons at the victims and relieved them of their valuables, exited the barbershop, and drove away.

An alarm was raised, and all Police patrols were alerted. The car was spotted in Beterverwagting, and a bike patrol pursued the vehicle.

However, at a certain point, the car stopped, and the suspects exited and fled the scene. Police managed to arrest the driver. Ranks are still searching for the other suspects.

Later Monday night, a female security guard was robbed at $25,000 cash, a gold chain, and a cellphone valued at $60,000.

when six males arrived on three motorcycles and pointed what appeared to be a gun at her. The female security guard was relieved of her valuables. The suspects then rode away.

Moments later, a suspect was arrested by the Police.

Three men were arrested on Monday for the alleged murder of Nigel Somersoll, a food vendor of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice).

Police Headquarters reported that one of the suspects, 55-year-old Calwyn Croal called Brother Croal, turned himself in at the Wismar Police Station accompanied by his lawyer at about 17:54 hrs Monday.

Two other suspects, Jamal Fullington, a 22-year-old construction worker/miner of Victory Valley, Linden, and Shaquan Miller, a 19-year-old Pork-knocker of Blueberry Hill, Linden, were arrested earlier Monday for questioning concerning the alleged murder.

Further investigations are ongoing.

Somersoll was reportedly attacked outside of his house early Monday morning. His cousin found Somersoll’s body lying face down in the yard after she heard gunshots outside.

Somersoll’s body was examined and there was one suspected gunshot wound to his chest and what appeared to be a laceration to his head.

He was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Collin Obermuller, a 44-year-old miner and businessman of Bartica, Region Seven, and his wife were arrested on Monday after Police nabbed them with various illegal drugs.

Police Headquarters reported that rank carried out a search based on information received. The officers unsuccessfully searched the couple’s house for drugs, arms and ammunition.

However, a further search was conducted in the backyard where a five- gallon bucket with a yellow cover was buried beneath a cherry tree. Several drugs were found inside.

The items found were: one multi-coloured parcel containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis, weighing 362 grammes; one clear transparent plastic bag containing a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine, weighing 25 grammes; and one clear plastic bottle containing 38 ziploc bags suspected to contain amphetamine, weighing 24 grammes.

Additionally, Police later found 11 ziploc bags with a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine, weighing 62 grammes.

Both suspects were informed of the suspicions and the offences committed, cautioned, and taken into custody. They are assisting with the investigation at the Bartica Police Station.

Four men were on Sunday arrested after Police found a 9MM pistol and three rounds of ammunition in a minibus at First Street, Non-Pareil, East Coast Demerara.

Police reported that ranks were on mobile patrol in the area at about 18:47hrs “when they had reason to search a group of men and a minibus they were standing next to.”

Police said the men are assisting with the investigation.

Cannabis worth about $27.4 million was found and destroyed during a narcotics eradication exercise at Kimbia, Upper Berbice River on Monday.

The drugs were discovered on two farms by Police ranks in Regional Division 10, Police Headquarters reported.

The first farm destroyed measured approximately four acres in size and had about six thousand cannabis plants ranging from six inches to four inches in height, with a total weight of 6,600 kilogrammes, along with 54.431 kilogrammes of dried cannabis.

The second farm was approximately six acres in size and had about 10 thousand Cannabis plants ranging from 11 inches to four inches in height, with a total weight of 10,000 kilogrammes.

Additionally, several nurseries which had approximately 50,000 cannabis seedlings, were also found.

Overall, there were a total of 16,000 plants, 15,000 seedlings and 54.431 kilogrammes of dried cannabis. Both farms, along with the nurseries and the make-shift camps were all destroyed by fire.

Samples were collected from both farms and lodged at the Mackenzie Police Station.

Lancelot Captain, a 28-year-old labourer of Kwakwani Park, Upper Berbice River, Region 10 is hospitalised in a serious  state after he was stabbed 10 times by a man.

Police Headquarters reported that Captain and Orlando Towler, the suspect, were imbibing at about 13:00 hrs Saturday.

Towler reportedly took away the alcoholic beverage because Captain was consuming too much. An argument is said to have ensued between the two men and Towler reportedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed Captain 10 times.

The victim was subsequently rushed to the Kwakwani Hospital Complex, where he was admitted, examined, and treated by a doctor on duty before being transferred to the Linden Hospital.

His condition is listed as serious but stable.

Meanwhile, the suspect was arrested and is assisting with the ongoing investigations. He is slated to appear in court on Tuesday.

A man died in Lethem, Central Rupununi last Saturday after he was reportedly mauled to death by two pit bull dogs.

Police sources have since confirmed that the owner of the dogs, a 32-year-old businesswoman, was arrested as the investigation unfolds.

The dead man has been identified as Gordon Forde.

The incident happened between 07:30 hrs and 17:30 hrs on Saturday at Middle Street, Lethem, Central Rupununi.

The businesswoman reportedly secured her two pit bull dogs in her yard, which is fenced, before journeying to Brazil on Saturday.

Hours later, she returned home and discovered Forde’s lifeless body in her yard.

There were several marks, which appeared to be dog bites, and blood stains about his body.

The matter was reported to the Police.

Forde’s body was taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man’s body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Darin Aubrey Chan, a young lawyer from Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini) is now able to practice law in Guyana following the acceptance of his petition in the High Court recently.

Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali-Hack presented the petition on October 16 before Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George.

“It is a moment that I have dreamt of, prayed for, and worked tirelessly towards for many years,” Chan expressed, noting the many failures and setbacks that he had encountered.

In 2018, he graduated from the Bishops’ High School and was almost certain that he would be admitted into the law programme at the University of Guyana, but he was not admitted to study law that year because of an error made on his application.

“In that moment, I was completely discouraged and disappointed,” he reflected.

Given the circumstances, he now had to pursue International Relations (IR) for one year. Three months into these studies though, he got into a car accident and had to undergo corrective surgery to his hips.

“I was placed on one-month bed rest and spent the next month doing physiotherapy so that I could walk again. After everything had returned to normalcy, I managed to complete the remaining semester and was eventually accepted into the law programme,” he related.

Right before classes began, he received a phone call from the National Toshaos Council that was offering a law scholarship to an individual of Amerindian descent.

“I was eventually interviewed by the council and awarded a fully funded scholarship by the NTC in collaboration with Ms. Vanda Radzik to read for my Bachelor of Laws Degree.”

In 2022, well aware that his parents were in no position to afford the tuition required to attend the Hugh Wooding Law School, Chan began writing letters to various ministries. With the support of the National Toshaos Council and the Regional Democratic Council of Mabaruma, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Hugh Wooding Law School.

“I want to assure you that I intend to be an Attorney-at-law of excellence. In executing my duties, I promise to always defend the constitution and the rights enshrined therein; to be a protector of the rule of law which is the foundation of a free and democratic society,” he pledged.

“I promise to always act in a manner befitting of an officer of the court; to always be a servant of the public and a facilitator of justice. Above all, I promise to always act with honesty and integrity.”

Fifty-six-year-old Nigel Somersoll is now dead after he was reportedly attacked outside his West Watooka, Linden house early Monday morning.

The incident unfolded at around 02:30hrs.

Reports are that Somersoll’s cousin related to the Police that she was on her bed when she heard the gunshots.

She later heard a motorbike riding away.

Because she was fearful, the News Room understands that the woman hid under her bed while she tried to contact Somersoll on his phone. However, the calls went unanswered.

The woman told investigators that she observed Somersoll’s body lying face down in the yard sometime later, when she exited the house.

She immediately alerted neighbours who called the Police.

Somersoll’s body was examined and there was one suspected gunshot wound to his chest and what appeared to be a laceration to his head.

He was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was pronounced dead.

In September 2022, Somersoll was shot and injured during a misunderstanding.

One of the victims from the Deep South Rupununi robbery and abduction which occurred over the weekend has withdrawn claims that $14 million worth of raw gold was stolen during the ordeal.

The development comes hours after it was reported that the gold was among several items stolen during the crime.

The News Room understands that the victim has raised with authorities that the gold, which was reported stolen by a rank at the scene, was not taken.

In fact, he said he was robbed of $892,000 cash and was forced to send 30,000 reis, which is equivalent to $1.2 million to a Brazilian account to the suspects.

Other items stolen during the ordeal which occurred at about 10:15 hrs at the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Bush Mouth substation in Marudi, Region Nine are two black glock 17 pistols, two yellow metal rings and a Mavado watch valued $140,000.

In a statement, Police said the crime was allegedly carried out by unidentifiable men, all wearing masks and carrying firearms. The victims were five Guyanese and four Brazilians.

Those victims are: Victor Adams, a 34-year-old Natural Resources Officer of Pattersen Drive, Georgetown; Romain Simon, a 39-year-old Natural Resource Officer of Zeelugt; Christopher Charles, a 17-year-old Barber of Lethem Central, Rupununi; Curtis Charles, a 35-year-old Lieutenant of the Guyana Defence Force and resident of the Diamond Housing Scheme; Karl Antone, a 30-year-old Community Mines Ranger of Aishalton Village, South Rupununi; Benedict John, a 28-year-old Caretaker of Karaudanau Village, South Rupununi; Dionei Farias De Brito, a 29 years General Manager of Boa Vista, Brazil; and Eduardo Moreira Freitas, a 22-year-old operator of Boa Vista Brazil.

Reports are that the victims were heading to Marudi Backdam but stopped at the GGMC gate to check-in.

Information reaching the News Room revealed that they were approached by the suspects, who were dressed in camouflage clothing along with bulletproof vests.

The victims were ordered to exit the two pickups they were in and they were placed to lay on the ground, face down.

The suspects then began to discharge rounds and proceed to relieve them of their valuables.

After committing the crime, the suspects ordered the victims to re-enter their vehicles and held them hostage. They proceeded with them to Baishazon Village, South Rupununi.

Upon arrival at the village, the suspects ordered the victims to accompany them by foot across an illegal crossing into Brazil then ordered them to run back into Guyana.

A Joint Services were deployed to the area as the investigation continues and in an effort to locate the suspects. No arrest has yet been made.
