Prime Minister of India, the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, is set to arrive in Guyana on Tuesday for a three-day visit, following President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s invitation.

The two leaders are expected to delve into a wide array of issues, with particular emphasis on military cooperation and addressing the challenges of climate change.

During a recent interview, President Ali explained that they will also explore opportunities in agro-processing, technology, and climate adaptation, as well as the mutual support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“Also, we have to look at the building out of the health care sector because they are big into health/ tourism. We are trying to enter that market to see how we can build our healthcare system to be a revenue arm for us. These are some of the things that will be on the agenda,” the president said.

In January 2023, President Ali visited India as the chief guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, where he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.

The governments of India and Guyana also agreed to establish working groups in the areas of agriculture and food production, information and communications technology, energy, ayurvedic and wellness, natural medicine and development, and defence, among other areas to advance the bilateral cooperation agenda.

During his state visit, the PM will co-chair the 2^nd India-CARICOM Summit alongside Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell and President Ali.

He will also address the National Assembly, visit the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Promenade Garden, and pay homage at the Indian Arrival Monument in the Monument Garden.

Guyana and India already share a strong bilateral relationship, underpinned by both historical and cultural ties.

The two countries have been directly linked through mutual investments in renewable energy and sustainable development.  India has also extended Lines of Credit to Guyana for various development projects, such as the construction of roads, bridges, and hospitals.

Notable projects that have benefitted from India’s financing include the Solar Home Systems project and the MV MA Lisha.

Further, the Indian Government offers a plethora of Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) courses to eligible officers across government ministries to build human capacity development.

In particular, the Guyana Defence Force continues to nominate officers to participate in army and naval training courses.

The executive body of the Guyana Boxing Association has remained the same following the electoral congress at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, recently.

Incumbent President Steve Ninvalle and his executive committee were elected unopposed to serve for another four-year cycle following a unanimous decision by the clubs under the jurisdiction of the entity.

The other reelected members are: First Vice-President Dr. Marissa Parris, Second Vice-President Lt. Col. Gordon Nedd, Third Vice-President Carl Graham, Secretary Stacy Correia, Treasurer Dexter Patterson, and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Seon Bristol.

In a post-election comment, Ninvalle said, “It’s an honour once again to be elected to serve at the helm of this association. This decision is essentially a mandate by the clubs to continue in the same vein and manner that we have been doing for the past cycle or tenure. By any objective matrix or criteria, 2023 has been a great year for boxing in every aspect. We have established three new clubs, and work is currently being undertaken to establish a fourth before the conclusion of the year.”

“Local competitions and participation in overseas tournaments and seminars for officials and pugilists have also been a feature of our administration in an effort to expose, enhance and build capacity inside and outside the squared circle.”

He further stated, “Notwithstanding, in order for the development of the sport to continue its upward momentum and growth, we have to consolidate our efforts to improve the quality of the discipline. And this can only occur if we are working towards a common goal and vision for the development of the fraternity.”

“Any individuals and officials within the fraternity who are averse to that mandate and decree issued by the clubs, which is central to maintaining our trajectory, should table their resignation. We have to be monolithic in our approach to achieving our vision. It has to be a coordinated and concerted effort by all involved for this purpose to be realised.”

The Georgetown Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (GCUSA) is proud to announce that three of its umpires have successfully completed the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association (WICUA) Level Three Oral and Practical Examination.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in their umpiring careers, qualifying them to officiate at all levels of cricket.

The following individuals have demonstrated exceptional knowledge and skills in the art of umpiring: Chandraban Rajnarine (94%), Dr. Niebert Blair (90.5%) and Dr. Ronaldo McGarrell (89.6%)

President of the GCUSA, Ryan Banwarie was thrilled at this fantastic accomplishment.

“Our three members have increased the capacity for cricket officiating in Guyana. Their hard work and passion are an inspiration to us all. Congratulations to Mr. Rajnarine, Dr. Blair and Mr. McGarrell. We can’t wait to see you excel on the field,” Banwarie said.

“We are also ecstatic to see Dr. Blair among our successful umpires. Her achievement is a testament to the growing number of women making significant contributions to cricket officiating.”

With the completion of this rigorous examination, these umpires join the ranks of cricket officials who are capable of making accurate decisions in the face of high-pressure situations.

Their dedication and hard work have paid off, and they are now poised to contribute to the growth and development of cricket in Guyana and the wider Caribbean region.

The much-anticipated second annual GT Beer Floodlight Tapeball tournament commenced last weekend in Essequibo with a number of teams vying for top honours.

This year’s edition features an exciting line-up of 24 teams, including Royal Strikers, Hackney, Golden Fleece, Jaguar, HVA Spartans, AZSS Phoenix, Team Royals, Renegades CC, Rising Star, United Crew, Maverick’s S.C., Charity, New Road Titans, Evolution, Queens Town Ariel A, Queens Town Ariel B, Richmond United, Affiance, Burukelli Jaguars, Pomeroon All-Stars, GT Warriors, Mashabo and Reliance Hustlers.

The opening weekend was staged at Pomona ground, while the final weekend of game on November 23 and 24 will take place at the Affiance Number One ground.

Matches are scheduled to begin at 18:00h, with the promise of a vibrant atmosphere combining fierce competition and community spirit.

Speaking at the launch, the GT Beer Brand Ambassador Dwain Bristol emphasised the importance of Essequibo as a focal point for sports development.

“Even if we don’t run the tournament countrywide, we have to run it in Essequibo. This is not just from a GT Beer perspective but a corporate perspective because shortly after this, we’re running a Banks Beer tournament also in Essequibo.”

“We like the sportsmanship, we like the competitiveness. Of course, that’s what drives the passion, and it’s something we want to be a part of. We’re continuously getting support from this community with the brands, and it’s only fitting that we give back.”

Organiser Rawle Pearce shared that the event is designed to cater to families, with bouncy castles and trampolines for children and a well-stocked bar and food stalls for adults.

Adding to the excitement, the second weekend will feature matches showcasing four female teams, further expanding the tournament’s inclusivity. Incentives for the female matches are yet to be confirmed.

Participating teams will compete for a first prize of trophy and G$225,000, while the second prize will be a trophy and G$125,000, and a trophy for third.

Pakistan-born cricketer Hassan Khan is ready to take on the challenge of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSLT20) as he joins the ranks of the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Known for his versatility as a left-arm spinner and a dependable lower-order batsman, Khan is thrilled to represent the Warriors in this exciting global tournament, running from November 26 to December 7, 2024, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

“I’m excited to join the Guyana Amazon Warriors and determined to help the team win matches,” said Hassan Khan, who played for Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the CPL earlier this year.

“This tournament is a big stage, and I’m here to give it my all. Every game is an opportunity to make a difference, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to ensure the Warriors come out on top. Let’s win it together!”

A Linden housewife, 42, was robbed and then raped by a man at her house sometime around 01:30 hrs Monday.

Police Headquarters reported that the woman went to bed at around 20:30 hrs Sunday and was awakened at about 01:30 hrs when a man, who is about six feet tall, was in her house.

She lives in a two-storey wooden and concrete house.

The man reportedly grabbed her from behind, and placed a knife to her neck, demanding cash and jewelry.

The victim reportedly told the man that she did not have any money and he became annoyed and took her downstairs, threw her on a mattress which was spread on the ground, and raped her.

The woman told investigators that the man continued demanding jewelry from her and being fearful for her life, she handed over t several items. The items the man took include two gold chains (worth $250,000), one pair of gold earrings (worth $200,000), one gold hand band (worth $200,000), one black and green flashlight (worth $5,000) and $5,000 cash.

The man then made good his escape on foot through the back door.

Detectives processed the scene and CCTV cameras seen in the area are to be reviewed. Police are looking for the suspect as investigations continue.

In a straight knockout format, Success Strike Force, I.B.S, Kings, and The Other Guys emerged victorious from their respective encounters, setting the stage for an exciting tournament.

Highlighting the day’s action, Brian Sookram of The Other Guys delivered a sensational performance, hammering six sixes and eight fours in a blistering unbeaten 83 off just 28 balls, steering his team to a commanding chase.

Meanwhile, Ryan Latiff from Kings contributed with a quickfire 26* and took two pivotal wickets.
