England leave West Indies with a 3-1 T20I series victory after the final match of their Caribbean tour was washed out.

Play was abandoned after just five overs in the fifth and final T20I with Evin Lewis and Shai Hope steering the hosts to 44 without loss before a heavy storm set in at Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia.

It wasn’t quite the start West Indies’ opening pair had staged less than 24 hours earlier, when they raced to 56 for nought in the first five overs and 136 for 0 in nine, on their way to chasing down a record 219 in Saturday’s dead rubber.

But it wasn’t far off, with Lewis striking two sixes and three fours on his way to 29 not out before the rain arrived.

Lewis had just pulled a John Turner delivery for a thunderous six over deep midwicket and sent the next ball in the air wide of mid-on for four before he was rapped on the helmet by a steepling bouncer attempting another pull on the last ball of the over – and ultimately the match.

The rain arrived just as he was about to undergo on-field concussion checks, but he walked off smiling with the rest of the players.

With Hope unbeaten on 14 off 10 balls, it was an abrupt end to what had loomed as another entertaining encounter to end the series after the same pitch had yielded 32 sixes on Saturday.

On that occasion, West Indies had won the toss for the only time in this series, but they made a strong start in the face of Jos Buttler’s decision to bowl first on Sunday.

Turner, who was playing just his second T20I after making his debut in the fourth game of this series, conceded 22 runs from his two overs while Jofra Archer, replacing Saqib Mahmood for this match, went for 16 off 2.

Jamie Overton, who didn’t bowl despite taking the field on Saturday, conceded five runs off his solitary over on Sunday.

Player of the Series Mahmood was comfortably the leading wicket-taker for the series with nine at an average of 10.55 and an economy rate of 6.33 with a best of 4 for 43 in the 1st T20I, eight of his wickets coming in the powerplay.

Next best was West Indies’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein with five.

“The one thing I noticed being here previously is the crosswinds at most grounds,” Mahmood told the post-match presentation. “I felt that if I wanted to take the new ball, I’d have to work on my away-swinger a little bit just because Reece Topley and Jofra [Archer] would want the new ball from the other end to swing the ball back in. That’s something I worked on. To perform and show that in a game was nice.”

Phil Salt was the leading run-scorer with 162 including 103 not out in the first game and 55 in the fourth. Jacob Bethell, his 21-year-old team-mate, also impressed with 127 runs for once out, and at a superior strike rate of 173.97.

As Government continues to implement its Student loan write-off programme aggressively, additional measures to improve ease of access to the initiative by prospective beneficiaries were announced today by Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and the Public Service Dr. Ashni Singh.

Minister Singh also urged persons to submit their applications as soon as possible, so as to facilitate timely processing of the applications in the interest of ensuring that all eligible persons benefit from the write-off of their outstanding student loans.

In his announcement regarding the additional accessibility measures for the Student loan write-off programme, the Minister outlined the following:

·Fully online submission of applications is now possible through the Ministry of Finance website at https://studentloanwriteoff.gov.gy/apply/new.

·Drop Boxes for hard copy submission of application form will be placed at all 10 Regional Democratic Council Offices countrywide with immediate effect, as well as the Ministry of Education at 26 Brickdam, and at the University of Guyana Tain Campus, Berbice.

·Applicants may also mail in their application via any post office to the Student Loan Agency. Persons are advised to address their envelope to: Student Loan Agency, PO Box 101544, Georgetown, and state their name and address aback of the envelope.

·Application forms will also be available at all RDC and NDC offices countrywide

Eligible applicants are reminded that they can still download the application form via the Ministry of Finance’s website on this link: https://finance.gov.gy/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Student-Loan-Application-Form-2024-Final.pdf. The hard copy of this form can also be submitted to the Student Loan Agency at the University of Guyana Turkeyen.

It would be recalled that in May of this year, the Government announced its Student Loan Write Off Programme. In keeping with Government’s Manifesto commitment to deliver free education by 2025, in October President Irfaan Ali also announced that by January 2025, tuition fees at the University of Guyana will be abolished. Further, tuition fees at all Government technical and vocational training institutes will be abolished, including the Guyana Industrial Training Centre. the Guyana School of Agriculture and the Carnegie School of Home Economics. This expanded measure is slated to benefit over 3000 additional persons. It also forms part of Government’s broader initiative to enhance human capital development to reduce inequality and improve access to education to every Guyanese citizen.

The Minister further encouraged persons to utilise all the training opportunities the Government has made available to upgrade and uplift their skills so as to enable them to fully take up the wide range of available job opportunities across the country, and further contribute and benefit from the unprecedented growth and transformation of the economy.

West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase has opened up about the move to join the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the inaugural ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSLT20).

Essequibo Anacondas defeated Essequibo Jaguars by 48 runs to be crowned champions of the inaugural Guyana Cricket Board National T20 League, powered by Bet CAGE Sports.

Playing at the National Stadium, Providence, Anacondas posted 159-5 from the allotted 20 overs and then kept Jaguars to 111-9 from 18 overs, with the injured Joemal La Fleur unable to bat.

Jaguars could not find answers to guile of off-spinner Richie Looknauth, who produced a match-winning spell of 4-21.

Looknauth accounted for Kemol Savory (19), Rajiv Ivan (4), Ricardo Adams (4) and Kevon Jawahir (8) in a bowling performance that stifled the Jaguars.

Zeynul Ramsammy topscored with 34 off 30 (3x4s, 1×6), while Tomanni Caesar made 16 off eight (2x4s, 1×6).

Anacondas were given a rousing start of 70 in 7.5 overs by Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kevon Boodie.

The left-handed Chanderpaul was the aggressor, blasting 43 off 20 (4x4s, 2x6s), while Boodie played the supporting role with 24 off 30 (2x4s, 1×6).

After Rampertab Ramnauth (15) and Looknauth (1) were dismissed, Keemo Paul with 39 off 26 (4x6s) and Quentin Sampson with 27* off 18 (2x6s) gave Anacondas valuable runs at the death.

Pitbulls win third place playoff

Former national youth player Gaurav Ramesh picked up the Player-of-the-Match award as Demerara Pitbulls defeated Berbice Piranhas by 34 runs in the third place playoff.

The tall Albion left-arm spinner picked up 4-24 and received solid support from Clinton Pestano (2-16) and Dwain Dick (2-20) as Piranhas were limited to 129-9 from the allotted 20 overs in pursuit of a target of 164.

Opener Joshua Persaud with 64 off 45 (5x4s, 4x6s) and skipper Christopher Barnwell with 51 off 41 (5x4s, 1×6) were the pillars of Pitbulls’ total, with Suresh Dhanai taking 3-38.

For the win, Anacondas received G$1.7 million, while Jaguars pocketed G$500,000 and Pitbulls G$200,000.

Kaieteur Warriors beat Pakaraima Force in female exhibition game

Kaieteur Warriors defeated Pakaraima Force by two wickets in the female exhibition game to kickstart the day.

Batting first, Pakaraima Force managed 89-6 from the allotted 20 overs at the National Stadium, Providence, with Tilleya Madramootoo topscoring with 34 off 49 (2x4s).

Opener Katana Mentore made 17 off 29 (1×4) and Shemaine Campbelle 13 off 12 (2x4s), as Cyanna Retemiah bagged 3-26 (4), Trisha Hardat 2-17 (4) and Ashmini Munisar 1-8 (4).

In reply, several players chipped in to guide Warriors to victory at 90-8 from 19.1 overs.

Realeanna Grimmond made 19 off 24 (2x4s), Retemiah 12 off 13, Ashmini Munisar 11 off 15, while Mandy Mangru, Tiea Isaacs and Melanie Dover scored 10 each.

Bowling for Force, Sheneta Grimmond picked up 2-16 (4), Nyia Latchman 2-20 (4), while Latisha Jordan, Danielle Manns and Tremayne Marks picked up one wicket apiece.

Warriors received G$300,000 for the win, and Force got G$150,000.

Investigators proving the murder of chain saw operator Davanan Hosea have arrested the four other suspects in relation to the crime.

They suspects in custody are: Kevin Grandstuart, 24; Rodwell Fraser,21, both of Victory Valley road, Timehri; Dwayne Bascom, 25, of Kara Kara Linden and a 16-year-old who hails from Timehri.

Police Headquarters confirmed that the men were arrested during an intelligence-led operation after CCTV footage was reviewed.

Grandstuart was allegedly found in possession of a black ‘Rambo’ knife while the teenager had the dead man’s cell phone in his possession at the time of his arrest.

This now brings the total number of suspects in custody to five. Police had initially reported that the fifth suspect, a 25-year-old salesman is also in custody.

Forty-year-old Hosea of Hillfoot squatting area along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway was murdered early Sunday, November 17th, at approximately 1:35 hrs after he was attacked by several men.

Police reported that investigations revealed Hosea had been performing his  daily duties in the back dam at Coverden, East Bank Demerara (EBD), prior to the incident.

Hosea’s brother, 36-year-old Levon Hosea, who also works as a chainsaw operator, provided details of the events leading up to his brother’s death.

Levon explained that on the afternoon of November 16, the brothers had worked together in the back dam before leaving for a local Chinese restaurant, where Davanan met with his reputed wife. After spending time at the restaurant and having a few drinks, Levon left his brother with his wife and returned home.

Later that evening, around 21:00 hrs, Davanan called Levon, asking him to meet at the Raghoo Sports Bar along the Soesdyke Public Road.

The brothers purchased more drinks at the bar, where Davanan reportedly told his brother that a group of men had been eyeing him. Moments later, the men approached Davanan, seized his valuables, and a confrontation broke out between Levon and the suspects.

The situation escalated, leading to a violent altercation, and the brothers fled through Shawnie Gas Station, located nearby. The perpetrators pursued them, and during the chase, Davanan was caught and engaged in a scuffle with the attackers. Levon, realising the danger, urged his brother to run east along the track, while he took a different route.

Levon later found his brother collapsed on the Hillfoot Soesdyke/Linden Highway, with several stab wounds about his body.

The body of Davanan Hosea was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by medical staff. The body was later transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Neil Miggins was recaptured on Saturday shortly after he escaped while receiving medical attention under Police guard at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Police Headquarters reported that Miggins, also known as ‘Scissors Head’, a 24-year-old resident of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara was in custody for several offences including armed robbery and rape.

Miggins who was ill, was taken to the hospital where he was admitted under Police guard as he receive medical attention.

At approximately 09:30 hrs, Police said Miggins requested to use the washroom and was allowed.

While doing so, Police said Miggins managed to remove one side of the handcuff and attacked the Police rank with a sharp metal object.

Despite the rank’s resistance, Miggins overpowered him and escaped using the stairs.

An alarm was immediately raised and other ranks were informed.

A search party was formed and Police said Miggins was recaptured a short distance from the hospital near the Shore Base facility at Best Village, West Coast Demerara.

He was taken to the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station where he was placed in custody pending further investigation.

Miggins is slated to be charged in the new week.

Police are investigating the alleged murder of Thagewante Motie, a 28-year-old woman from Supply Squatting Area, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

She was seriously wounded (chopped to the neck and arm) at about 21:00hrs on November 14 at her address in Supply, Mahaica.

She was admitted as a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and died at about 16:00hrs two days later, November 16, while receiving treatment in the recovery room at GPHC.

The suspect has been identified as Uram Doorbassa, also known as ‘Anil’, a 26-year-old Labourer from Belmonte, Mahaica, ECD, who died by suicide after chopping the victim.

He died on November 16 while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Police investigations indicate that at about 21:00hrs on Thursday 14th November 2024, the suspect and victim had an argument in the victim’s yard. The suspect eventually used a cutlass and chopped the victim twice, once on the neck and the other on her arm.

The suspect eventually drank a poisonous substance and they both were admitted at the GPHC where they later succumbed.

A 13-year-old female student is currently hospitalised after sustaining head injuries in a road traffic accident in Sophia on the evening of Saturday.

The incident occurred around 20:00 hrs on Dennis Street, near the Section ‘C’ Field Access Road. The collision involved motor car #PXX 8265, driven by 21-year-old Timothy King of ‘B’ Field South Sophia, and the young pedestrian.

According to police reports, King was driving east along the northern lane of Dennis Street when the 13-year-old crossed the road from south to north, emerging from behind a parked vehicle on the opposite side.

The teenager was struck by King’s car as she stepped into its path.

The impact caused the girl to fall onto the car’s windshield before landing on the road. She was subsequently helped to her feet by the driver and bystanders, who assisted in transporting her to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Upon arrival, she was conscious but was found to have sustained injuries, particularly to her head. Medical staff are now treating her for these injuries, though her condition is described as stable.

Timothy King is currently in police custody and is assisting with the investigation into the incident. Authorities have urged all road users to exercise caution, particularly in busy areas such as Sophia.
