With ambitious plan, gov’t promises smoother, safer travel for EBD road users
Grove:

- Here, reconstruction is financed by the Government of Guyana, currently in the procurement stage.
- The works will entail:
  - Excavating unsuitable materials,
  - Backfilling with white sand,
  - Installing geosynthetic fabric,
  - Creating a loam subbase,
  - A crusher run base,
  - An asphalt concrete wearing course,
  - Concrete drains and utilities, which are already complete,
  - A newly operational bypass road from Diamond to Good Success for light vehicles.

Good Success to Timehri:

- Scheduled for rehabilitation under IDB financing through a Design and Build contract, this segment has already seen contracts signed and designs submitted for approval.
- The anticipated works include:
  - Rehabilitation of structures,
  - Widening of the carriageway,
  - Installation of roadside furniture and road markings,
  - Street lighting,
  - Pedestrian walkways in residential areas.

Buzz Bee Dam to Friendship:

- A new four-lane highway is being constructed along the Heroes Highway alignment, with bids currently under evaluation, funded by the Government of Guyana.
- This ambitious vision aims to extend the road all the way to the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, enhancing connectivity across the region.

While this plan was thoroughly discussed in the National Assembly, concerns arose regarding the allocation of funds for various segments of the undertaking. Some critics have noted that individuals seem to be politicising the discussion, suggesting a lack of a cohesive strategy to tackle the issues along the East Bank Public Road.

As can be observed throughout the country, the Government of Guyana is diligently addressing the road transport network and its connectivity with bridges. The end product is undoubtedly what everyone desires—a smoother, safer journey—but the process of getting there is equally important.

Edghill maintains work has started, progressing on $15.8 gov’t complex

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, on Tuesday dismissed claims from Opposition Member of Parliament Annette Ferguson regarding the funding of the $15.8 billion Government Office Complex.

He asserted that the project has been thoroughly discussed and is vital for modernising government infrastructure and consolidating services for the benefit of all Guyanese.

“The assertion that public funds are being diverted to construct the Sheraton Four Points Hotel is not only absurd but also raises serious questions about the integrity of the opposition,” Minister Edghill stated during a recent address.

In his update on the project, Edghill confirmed that as of September 2024, the complex is 6% complete. Key milestones achieved include:

99% completion of all legal work and preliminary processes
100% completion of the first stage of geotechnical investigations
100% completion of land clearing for 20 acres
100% mobilisation of site offices
100% confirmation of the actual site location by the Ministry of Public Works
99% completion of sand filling for both temporary and permanent works on 13 acres
100% completion of the conceptual design
95% completion of the second stage of geotechnical investigations
25% completion of detailed design

Minister Edghill emphasised that much of the current work is being carried out off-site, including essential steel fabrication. He clarified that the apparent lack of visible activity on-site does not indicate a slowdown, but rather reflects the meticulous planning required for a project of this scale.

Upon signing the contract, a total of $2.6 billion was allocated as a mobilisation advance, with further payments made based on measured deliverables. The minister assured the public that all efforts are being made to keep the project on schedule for completion by 23 August 2026. He urged an end to what he described as the “recklessness” of the opposition’s rhetoric.

“Our primary objective is to deliver this vital project for the people of Guyana. We welcome constructive dialogue, but misinformation will not derail our commitment to progress,” he asserted.

The Government Office Complex is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and parking challenges for citizens accessing government services. Strategically located in Eccles, it features three entry points accessible from major roadways, including the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Ogle East Bank bypass, and Heroes Highway.

Illegal for Police to lock up persons for small amounts of ganja – Nandlall

Man nabbed with 4.2 grammes of ganja in Matthew’s Ridge

When quizzed about the law amendments and this specific case, Nandlall said it shed light on the legal framework that should protect citizens from wrongful detention.

“An incident was reported where a person was locked up by the Police for having less than 15 grammes of marijuana,” Nandlall stated.

“We amended the Narcotics Act in November 2022 to eliminate mandatory custodial sentences for possession up to 30 grammes,’” he added.

Nandlall clarified that in keeping with the law, possession of zero to 15 grammes mandates counselling, while possession between 15 and 30 grammes may result in community service, with no possibility of imprisonment.

“If the court cannot impose a prison sentence, then the Police cannot lock someone up for that offence,” he stressed.

The Attorney General reiterated that the principle of law is clear.

“If an offence does not carry imprisonment upon conviction, the Police cannot detain individuals prior to trial. Bail must be granted in such cases.”

In a decisive warning, Nandlall urged Police officers to comply with the law.

“They are advised not to detain individuals for possession of marijuana below 30 grammes. They must charge the individual and present them before the Magistrates’ Court,” Nandlall asserted.

Education Ministry launches comprehensive review of TVET curriculum

The Ministry of Education (MOE) is excited to announce the launch of a comprehensive review and rewriting of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum for Grades 7-9.

This ambitious initiative, led by Deputy Chief Education Officer with responsibility for Technical Education, Dr. Ritesh Tularam, marks a significant step forward in preparing Guyana’s youth for the demands of the 21st-century workforce. The review process was successfully negotiated through a collaborative effort with the World Bank, emphasizing the global commitment to improving educational standards.

Recognizing the evolving demands of the job market and the necessity for a more dynamic and forward-thinking educational framework, this initiative will equip students with the relevant skills needed to thrive in contemporary industries. The revamped curriculum will not only enhance the quality of education for students across Guyana but also foster critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills that are crucial for their personal and professional development.

As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Education seeks to align the new TVET curriculum with current industry standards and global educational best practices. This realignment will offer students hands-on, practical experience in various technical and vocational fields, ensuring they are well-prepared for both higher education and the job market.

Better water supply promised with $130M well at LBI

Currently, those residing in the area have no access to water. They purchase from outside sources.

So in the interim, efforts are being made to connect the northern section of the housing scheme which consists of some 500 residents to the old well, which provides water to sections of the East Coast of Demerara.

“This immediate intervention we are seeking to have will only benefit those coming in at the front, the few houses at the front. The major challenge will be for those within the Young Professional housing area,” Croal said.

The project is expected to be completed within three months.

Until then, Croal urged persons to be patient.

“I want to ask for patience for all those who are living here or intend to come here, for your patience for two months, whereby we will be drilling a new well.

“But we ask for patience…There are some times which you can’t rush,” Croal stated.

Meanwhile, Director of Projects of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Marlon Daniels said the contractor has since committed to work on a 24-hour basis as much as possible to deliver the project at the earliest.

“…We will soon be able to deliver…I want to ask for a bit more patience,” Daniels said.

A previous contractor who was awarded the project was terminated for non-performance.

The well is being built by Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services.

Search continues for missing Georgetown woman, seven months after disappearance

It has been seven months of anguish since 63-year-old Gale Husbands, a wife and mother, vanished from her D’Urban Street, Georgetown home. She was last seen wearing a floral dress on February 7, 2024.

After she disappeared without a trace, her family has been searching for her relentlessly. Her disappearance has taken a toll on the family, especially on her 83-year-old mother, Joan Nascimento.

Speaking with the News Room on Tuesday, Nascimento expressed the family’s determination to continue the search until Gale is found.

Nascimento recalled that the last time she saw her daughter was the day before she went missing.

“The last time I saw her was the 6^th of February, she had to go to Woodlands Hospital for results of a blood work she had done but she went missing the very next day which was the 7^th,” Nascimento said.

Gale lived with her husband. Nascimento said they got married in 1996; Gale has four children from her previous marriage. All of her children reside abroad.

On February 7, Gale’s husband who works as a hire car driver called Nascimento and told her that the woman was missing.

Nascimento explained that Gale’s husband said he was coming home from work and called Gale to inform her.

“He said he was calling her phone but he wasn’t getting any answer and he asked his sister downstairs to go and check on her and the sister said, no she is not there.

“The said night, we went all over by the [Stabroek] Market square and we didn’t see her,” Nascimento recounted.

Gale suffers from diabetes and hypertension and according to her mother, about four years ago she was diagnosed with a nerve condition.

The family remains baffled as to what caused Gale to walk out of her house and never returned. She did not take any of her medication, clothing, or phone.

“It is strange because if a person walked out of a house, how can they suddenly vanish and nobody not seeing them,” Nascimento questioned.

Nascimento said she even questioned Gale’s husband if they had any marital issues to which he said no.

She said she also questioned her husband if they had any problems and he said no

“I am very upset, I am crying all the time, I get like a skeleton. I was never like this, I lost a whole lot of weight, I can’t get to sleep and eat proper,” a tearful Nascimento said.

Twenty-four hours after she disappeared, a report was made at the Alberttown Police Station.

Nascimento said while they have searched far and wide for Gale with no leads, they will continue until she is found.

“You know how many places we been and search for her – the whole of Georgetown, we been over the river, Parika, Parfaite Harmonie, Belle West, Linden, Berbice, we went Onverwagt where they have that place, Hugo Chavez.

“We don’t know where else to look, we look in the Gardens, the Seawalls, the East Bank but we are not finding her anywhere,” Nascimento said.

The elderly woman said she also questions if something terrible has happened to Gale.

“I wonder if somebody killed this girl and put her in a shallow grave, I don’t know but this is what is tormenting me.”

CCTV footage from a church nearby captured when Gale walked up D’Urban Street on February 7. A store CCTV also captured when she walked by. And that was the last time Gale was ever seen.

“All I want is my daughter to come home, if somebody good got her out there, let them come forward we will give them a reward money,” Nascimento pleaded.
