The decomposed body of 56-year-old Rushik Ramkarran known as ‘Crushal’ was discovered in his Seventh Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni) home on Tuesday.

Police Headquarters reported that the man’s 33-year-old niece called and reported to the Police that Ramkarran had not been seen in several days.

Police said the man is an alleged alcoholic and drug addict.

After the report, a team of Police ranks visited the man’s home and found his door bolted from the inside with a reddish substance (suspected to be blood) flowing down the stairs.

The door was pried open, and Ramkarran was found lying face down in a decomposed state at the bottom of the stairs.

“The man’s body was examined and a wound was observed on the head, with blood visible on the face,” Police said.

The body was transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Based on preliminary investigation, it is suspected that the deceased may have fell from the top of the stairway, hitting his head in the process.

A further investigation is ongoing.

Police on Monday night confirmed that Mohamed Kalameeden Nasir and Arvinda Roopram, the two men killed at Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD) at the weekend, died of stab wounds.

In a statement, Police said Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh conducted post-mortem examinations on Monday.

Nasir died from a stab wound to the chest while Roopram died from multiple incised wounds.

Nasir, a 30-year-old carpenter of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, and Roopram, a 25-year-old construction worker, were involved in a scuffle early Saturday morning.

The two suspects, Alex Amsterdam, called ‘Mario’, a 28-year-old security guard, received one stab wound to his upper abdomen, while the second suspect, Terry (only name given), made good his escape from the scene in an unknown direction.

Amsterdam has been apprehended. He is under Police guard at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

13,000 Guyanese will benefit from the student debt write-off implemented by the government

Free tertiary education by 2025 is an essential element of the PPP/C 2020-2025 manifesto plans. To achieve this, President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the government will implement a phased approach, first targeting individuals who hold university loans.

In 2024, during the reading of the national 2024 budget, the Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr Ashni Singh announced phase one of the initiative, benefitting some 13,000 Guyanese.

A whopping $11 billion in loans are expected to be written off by the government in the initial phase.

Additionally, Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo noted that a mechanism to assist students who would have already paid their dues to the university but are repaying loans to commercial banks will be examined.

Another major initiative implemented by the government includes the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), granting individuals an opportunity to earn a higher education free of cost. A total of 1.6 billion, has been spent on scholarships through this programme to date.

According to the mid-year report, over 4,000 persons graduated in May 2024 with bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and other certificate programmes.

Additionally, in the first half of the year, 8,023 GOAL scholarships were also awarded to persons expected to commence studies in September 2024.

Onecia Warrick, 24, and Maryann Allicock, a 32-year-old food vendor, both of the Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown, were charged on Monday with attempted murder.

They are accused of attempting to murder Randell Dowding, a 36-year-old food vendor from North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, earlier in September. They were arrested on September 19.

Both appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Faith McGusty, where they pleaded not guilty. They were each placed on $150,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to October 16.

However, Dowding was also arrested on September 19 and charged Monday for “Unlawful Wounding and Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm,” committed on Allicock and Warrick on September 1.

He appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, where he pleaded not guilty and was placed on a total of $85,000 bail for the two offenses. His matter will come up again on October 14.
