‘Not the End’ — President Ali vows to dismantle all drug operations
a major bust at an illegal airstrip in Region One (Barima-Waini), President Dr. Irfaan Ali pledged on Wednesday that local authorities are prepared to collaborate with their partners to dismantle all criminal networks, particularly drug trafficking operations, in the country.
“Make no mistake, the bust is not the end of the matter. We are ready to work with you in dismantling the global empire that drug trade has created.
“We are committing to dismantling any cells which may exist locally and have lend support to transnational criminal cartels. This is our commitment to the global community,” President Ali stated during his address at the launch of the National Defence Institute.
The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), with support from the Army’s Special Forces and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), discovered over four tonnes of cocaine valued at US$195 million buried underground near the illegal airstrip over the weekend. This bust followed months of high-level surveillance and intelligence gathering.
In commending the security services for their recent success, President Ali emphasized Guyana’s intention to work with its partners to destabilize and “break the back” of all criminal networks, especially drug trafficking operations within Guyana’s borders and airspace.
“As small as we are, with the limited resources that we have, you can be assured that we are taking all responsibility seriously and any information that is available to us, we will go after to the best of our ability every single operation that has to be dismantled,” Dr. Ali said.
President Ali noted that the operation is a clear demonstration of Guyana’s resolve to combat drug trafficking and to protect the nation from being used as a transshipment point for illicit substances.
“To those who may have ambitions of using Guyana as a transnational point for the movement of illegal substances, let me be clear, we will come after you with the full force of the law. We will not allow our country to be used for criminal activity and we will pursue those who seek to do so,” President Ali warned.

Both the WTO Director-General and Ambassador Ramsammy underscored the importance of advancing digital trade and expanding the services sector, recognizing that digital services are integral to the future of global trade.
Guyana, a WTO member since January 1, 1995, and a member of GATT since July 5, 1966, remains committed to supporting the WTO and advocating for a fair and transparent multilateral trading system. The country takes its role as the CARICOM Ministerial Spokesperson on WTO matters seriously.
Ambassador Ramsammy was accompanied by Mr. Colin Luckie, First Secretary at Guyana’s Permanent Mission to the WTO.

Gang violence, migration patterns among focus for National Defence Institute
The National Defence Institute is expected to become a significant player in both global and regional affairs, providing training to officers across the Caribbean.
“The institute is not just another training institute; it is a crucial part of building capacity and expertise within national defense architecture,” President Ali stated at the launch, held at the Arthur Chung Conference Center, Liliendaal.
“The curriculum of this institute will reflect the diverse and evolving nature of security threats. It will offer programs that are multidisciplinary in nature and will include studies in areas of national development,” President Ali added.
Former presidents and diplomats are anticipated to contribute to the institute, which will offer training in various disciplines, including strategic and intelligence studies, foreign policy analysis, civilian-military relations, cybercrime, and political sociology.
President Ali emphasized that the institute’s purpose extends beyond addressing Guyana’s border threats and sovereignty issues, stating that it will be “critically linked to the Regional Security Service (RSS).”
“It will not only be an academic research institution but will also be a real-life institution producing action plans for threats and challenges facing the region. The dynamism of this institute will be interesting and evolving. Defence is everyone’s responsibility,” President Ali remarked.
Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Defence Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), highlighted the institute’s role in bridging the gap between security and development.
“Such an institute nurtures the intellectual and operational capabilities of all our national resources, serving as a beacon for strategic thought and action to support national development. The Defence Institute, therefore, is an integral component of the ecosystem of national development. The establishment of one is a significant step in building out our ecosystem for national development,” Brigadier Khan said.
Dr. Randolph Persaud has been appointed Director of the National Defence Institute. According to Persaud, the institute will serve as a reliable source of expert knowledge, available to the leadership of Guyana and the Caribbean. It will also engage the public to foster a stronger understanding of national security between the government and its citizens.

Man, 57, found dead in G/Town apartment
Anthony Kissoon, a 57-year-old Guyanese of East Indian descent, was found deceased in his Georgetown apartment on Tuesday. The body was discovered by Kissoon’s cousin, Fredrick Kissoon, who reported the incident to authorities around 15:50 hours.
Fredrick Kissoon had visited the apartment after Kissoon had previously mentioned feeling unwell. Upon arrival at the residence, located at Lot 72 Hadfield Street, Fredrick noticed an unpleasant odor emanating from the property. He entered the apartment and found Kissoon lying unresponsive on the floor of his bedroom.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were dispatched to the scene, along with emergency medical services. A doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation confirmed Kissoon’s death at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed no signs of foul play or injury.
The CID team and Crime Laboratory processed the scene to gather evidence. Anthony Kissoon’s body has been transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kissoon’s death.

Kwakwani mourns death of Coach Dave Causway
The community of Kwakwani in Region 10 is in mourning after a tragic accident claimed the life of 36-year-old Dave Causway on Tuesday.
According to his aunt, Elsa La Rose, Dave was transporting friends when they encountered difficulties climbing a hill. Dave, who was driving a heavily loaded vehicle, advised his friends to walk up the hill to lighten the load. He promised to follow with the vehicle.
“He said he would come behind with the vehicle and they walked up. After they realized he wasn’t coming, they decided to come back down. They met two other vehicles and asked if they had seen his car coming up. They said they only saw some vehicle in the bush, so everyone went back,” La Rose explained.
When they finally located the vehicle, Dave was missing.
“They only saw the vehicle and not the driver, so they started searching and found him trapped under the vehicle. That’s all we know,” La Rose said.
Dave made the National Basketball team at a young age and, after a five-year hiatus, returned to Kwakwani to form his own team, the Untouchables.
Dave died at the scene after becoming trapped beneath the vehicle. La Rose described him as a respected and humble individual, known for his significant contributions to youth development in Kwakwani through basketball.
“He was nice, very polite, especially to elders and youths because he was a coach,” La Rose shared.
She revealed that Dave made the National Basketball team at a young age and, after a five-year hiatus, returned to Kwakwani to form his own team, the Untouchables.
“What I know is he was loved in Kwakwani and everywhere he went. When they brought him out of the bush yesterday, the number of people present was too numerous to mention,” his aunt added.
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association released a statement honoring Dave, noting his roles as a member of the last Guyana junior national championship team, a club champion, a senior national player, and the founder and coach of his team.
“His love for basketball was immense; it was his passion and life’s work. He gave his heart and soul to the sport. Guyana has lost not just a great player and coach, but a man whose dedication and energy inspired many. His contributions to basketball in our country are immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be felt on and off the court,” the Association stated.
Following the news of Dave’s passing, there has been an outpouring of tributes on social media.
Jamal Nichols wrote on his Facebook page, “R.I.P to one of the best coaches in Guyana. One of the main men who encouraged me to pursue my basketball dreams and really inspired me to get better at the sport.”
Michael Singh also commented, “I met Dave when he joined the Colts Basketball Club in 2012. His speed, valiant play, and fearlessness were always evident. Under his watch, we worked long hours to solidify the team as a force in Guyana Basketball. He continued to work tirelessly to motivate and ensure Kwakwani Basketball, both at senior and junior levels, thrived. I will miss the constant calls, especially when he had a team traveling to the city for a tournament. I’m recommending Dave for the One Guyana MVP accolade; this son of the game deserves to be remembered now and forever.”

Essequibo U-13 cricketers benefit from cricket gear project
to victory and championship honours.
Their innings was full of maturity beyond their age, Beharry observed.
Usain is from Moruca, Region One, and attends Waramuri Primary School, while Ravid is from Pomona and attends Abram Zuil Secondary School. They both received cash incentives to assist in purchasing cricket gear they need.
At a simple presentation just after the game, the young players thanked Beharry and Das for the token and promised to continue working on their game.
“This initiative is happy to be part of their development and will continue to assist young people and develop cricket,” a release stated.
Making an impact
Total cricket related items received/purchased so far: G$460,000 in cash, 13 coloured cricket uniforms, one set of stumps and bails, two trophies, 27 pairs of cricket shoes, 33 pairs of batting pads, 35 cricket bats, one floppy hat, 32 pairs of batting gloves, 25 thigh pads, three pairs of wicket-keeping pads, six arm guards, two chest pads, two boxes, 12 cricket bags, six bat rubbers, six helmets, one fiber glass bat, 13 boxes of white cricket balls, three boxes of red balls and 28 footballs.
In addition to the above, gear worth more than G$600,000 were donated by Sheik Mohamed, former national wicket-keeper/batsman. All cash collected is being used to purchase cricket gear requested and not available at the time.
To date, 86 young players, male and female, from all three counties of Guyana have benefited directly from cash, seven gear bags, two trophies, four arm guards, 33 bats, three boxes, six helmets, 31 pairs of cricket shoes, 20 pairs of batting pads, 24 thigh pads, one bat grip, 34 pairs of batting gloves, one pair of wicketkeeping pads and three pairs of wicketkeeping gloves.
Many others benefitted indirectly.
In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area benefitted from two used bats.
Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenaam Cricket Committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard also received one box of red cricket balls each, Cold Fusion Cricket Club 13 coloured uniforms, while RHCCCC received six boxes of balls, 15 white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket-keeping gloves, two sets of stumps and bails.
Other beneficiaries are the Essequibo Cricket Board, the Town of Lethem, youth coach Travis Persaud (one box of red cricket balls), male and female teams playing the traditional hardball and softball in the Upper Corentyne area, Number 65 Young Titans with 30 T-Shirts, youths of Just Try Cricket Club, Wakenaam Cricket Academy (one box of white balls), Shamar Joseph, Nehemiah Hohenkirk, Shamar Apple, Leguan Cricket Committee, Tucber Park Cricket Club and Malteenoes Sports Club (nine cricket balls each).
Cricket related items, used or new, are distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients.
Talent spotting is being done across the country and club leaders also assist to identify same. Progressive and well managed cricket clubs with a youth program, will also benefit.

Fausse déclaration de patrimoine et enrichissement illicite : Aviol Fleurant dans le viseur de l’ULCC
Dans un rapport d’enquête publié en début de journée du mardi 3 mai 2024 par l’Unité de Lutte Contre la Corruption (ULCC), l’ancien ministre de la planification et de la coopération externe, Aviol Fleurant, est épinglé. Pour enrichissement illicite et fausse déclaration de patrimoine, l’ULCC demande à la justice haïtienne la mise en mouvement de l’action public contre Aviol Fleurant.
Cette enquête fait suite à une pétition signée par 4,900 citoyennes et citoyens exigeant à l’ULCC de diligenter une enquête sur le patrimoine de l’ex ministre de la planification et de la coopération externe. En effet, l’institution s’est axée sur les articles 11 et 12 du décret du 8 septembre 2004 qui l’a créée, jugeant opportun d’assurer le suivi d’une telle sollicitation.
Dans ce document rendu public, l’institution a fait savoir qu’Aviol Fleurant a connu une augmentation de plus de 250 % de son patrimoine.
Il a été mentionné que l’ex ministre s’est enrichi illicitement pendant son passage à la tête dudit ministère. Il ne parvient pas à justifier la provenance de cette pharamineuse somme de soixante-quinze millions deux cents sept milles trois cent trente neuf gourdes (75.207.339.29). Cette somme représente une augmentation de deux cent cinquante trois pour-cent de son patrimoine par rapport aux revenus légitimes des époux Fleurant, a indiqué le rapport qui a tenu de préciser que cette valeur a été retracée sur les 16 comptes bancaire de Monsieur et Mme Fleurant de mars 2016 à décembre 2018. Le couple ne peut pas non plus justifier la provenance des fonds utilisés pour l’achat de deux propriétés situées à Péguy-Ville, localité de la commune de Pétion-ville, au nom de leurs enfants pour la somme de soixante quinze mille dollars US.
Aviol Fleurent a menti sur sa déclaration définitive d’impôt, selon le rapport. Au regard des articles 17 de la loi du 12 février 2008 et les articles 107 et 108 du code pénal haïtien ainsi que la loi du 12 mars 2014, l’ULCC recommande la mise en mouvement de l’action publique contre l’ancien titulaire du MPCE.

Amid significant growth in manufacturing sector, businessman says developmental financing needed
Guyanese would do well to make the needed investments to develop the skills required to advance the sectors that are booming and moving apace in the country.
This is according to businessman Vishnu Doerga, who serves as the Chairman of the Suriname- Guyana Chamber of Commerce.
He shared these sentiments as he spoke at the 2024 mid-year report released recently by the Ministry of Finance.
According to that report, Guyana’s manufacturing sector is estimated to have grown by 27.5 per cent in the first half of this year, and Doerga spoke about some of the measures that can help Guyanese contribute to further progress in the country’s economy.

He is among those who believe the manufacturing sector is filled with abundant opportunities. But first, Doerga said Guyanese manufacturers should get better at acquiring developmental financing that allows them to invest in the machinery and technology that can help them convert abundant raw materials into finished products.
“Guyana has been known for decades for exporting raw materials, so in the future, it would be good to analyse how we can process some of these raw materials to take care of our own needs.
“It’s not the easiest thing to do, but we as Guyanese need to pay attention to how we can add more value and cut down on our imports,” he shared.
Good infrastructure, good manufacturing capacity, and an educated workforce should be made priorities, he opined, so that all Guyanese, irrespective of their background, can earn well.
“We have to ensure we have infrastructure in place that can alleviate some of the drought and flooding conditions that countries like us experience,” he pointed out.
Within the manufacturing sector, the report detailed the economic performance of some subsector.
Rice manufacturing, for example, grew by 22.7 per cent, which offset the 60.4 per cent contraction observed for sugar manufacturing.
Considering the first-half performance, the manufacturing sector is now projected to grow by 14.5 percent this year.
Meanwhile, the services sector is estimated to have grown by 7.3 per cent in the first half of the year, driven largely by growth in administrative and support services, financial and insurance activities, transport and storage, professional, scientific, and technical services, and wholesale and retail trade.
These subsectors grew by 10.4 per cent, 11 per cent, 9.4 per cent, 53 per cent, and 4.1 per cent, respectively.
The expansion in the administration and support services subsector continues to be driven by an increase in the demand for security services and other support activities. In the
transport and storage subsector, growth was driven by increased transport activities at ports, for both passengers and cargo, and growth in land freight which is supported by increased
construction, and wholesale and retail trade.The services sector is now projected to grow by 7.7 per cent in 2024, above the 6.9 per cent projected at the time of preparing Budget 2024.
