Hudson Thompson, a 28-year-old resident of Albouystown, Georgetown was robbed of a gold and diamond chain valued at $2 million.

A statement from Police Headquarters noted that the robbery occurred at about 19:00 hrs on Tuesday at James Street, Albouystown, by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

Investigations disclosed that the Thompson was on James Street, seated in front of a shop, and on his phone when he was approached by the two suspects who were on a black motorcycle.

The pillion rider dismounted, pulled out a handgun from the crotch of his pants, pointed it to the victim and demanded that he handed over his chain. The victim tried to resist, but the suspect discharged a round in his direction, snatched the chain and hit him across the forehead with the gun.

After that, the two perpetrators made good their escape on the motorcycle, east along James Street. No one was injured as a result of the gunshot.

Persons in the area were questioned, and one 9mm spent shell was recovered at the scene.

Police are investigating a shooting incident which occurred at about 19:45 hrs on  Tuesday at Charles Street, Charlestown, which resulted in a six-year-old child receiving a gunshot wound to the head. The child is presently hospitalised, and his condition is listed as ‘serious’.

Investigations so far revealed that the boy was standing next to his 39-year-old mother, who is a food vendor, on the eastern side of Charles Street when a man approached on a black motorcycle (registration number unknown), with a gun in his hand.

As he approached the woman’s food stall, he discharged four rounds in the direction of a man (known as ‘Crab’), who was standing not far from the child and his mother. ‘Crab’ then began to run and made good his escape. In the process, the six-year-old boy was shot, and he fell to the ground.

The child was picked up by his mother and taken to a city hospital, where he is receiving medical attention. His condition is listed as serious.

Two 9mm spent shells were recovered at the scene.

Police are looking for the suspect, as well as the man known as ‘Crab’. Investigations are in progress.

Joel Adams, a 14-year-old student of Dennis Street Sophia Care Centre, lost his life at about 15:05 hrs on Tuesday at the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal, Georgetown.

Investigations revealed that Adams left the Care Centre with a group of children at about 13:30 hrs and went to the Aquatic Centre for a swim programme.

Miss Khemwatti Dasrat, the Caretaker, related that at about  14:55 hrs, she heard the whistle blow at the Aquatic Centre, and the children started to exit the pool.

One of the swim coaches related that she saw when Adams “back-flicked” into the pool, and the Life Guard jumped in the pool to rescue him.

He was taken out of the pool and attended to by a Nurse there on stand-by. An ambulance was summoned, and he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The body is at the GPHC’s Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The Caribbean Investment Forum is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, July 10, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal with an anticipated attendance of four hundred participants.

Chief Investment Officer and Head of the Guyana Office for Investment, Dr Peter Ramsaroop, outlined the agenda for the three-day event. He said the forum will spotlight sustainable agriculture, the transition to a green economy, and the digitalisation of business.

“This event actually coincides with Guyana’s transformation as the regional powerhouse,” he stated in an interview at the Department of Public Information on Tuesday.

He continued, “Holding the Caribbean investment forum in Guyana is a lot of investors, a lot of business owners are looking forward to it because they want to be part of our transformation,”

President Dr Irfaan Ali is slated to deliver the keynote address, with attendees including delegations from Europe, the United States, South America, and the Caribbean.

Dr Ramsaroop highlighted the forum as a pivotal moment for engaging with financiers and discussing partnerships.

He underscored President Dr Irfaan Ali’s advocacy for consortiums and joint ventures, stressing their role in facilitating Guyana’s integration into larger economic frameworks.

Hosted by the Caribbean Export Development Agency in collaboration with the Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, the European Union, and the CARICOM Secretariat, the three-day event will feature high-level discussions on sustainable investment strategies.

It provides a platform for business leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue and forge partnerships aligned with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. (DPI)

Police are investigating the death of Angelina James, a 16-year-old student of Wauna Secondary School and a resident of White Water Creek, North West District, Region One.

The schoolgirl died sometime between 20:00 hrs Monday night and 07:30 hrs Tuesday morning.

James and her 11-year-old sister were left at home, while their stepfather Romel Ramasindo and their mother Vanessa James visited Georgetown to attend the Supreme Criminal Court.

Tuesday morning, Angelina’s cousin, 30-year-old Augustine Emmanuel was passing the house when he observed that the door was opened. On investigating, he discovered Angelina dead. She is believed to have taken her own life.

He alerted other relatives nearby, and they made a report to the Police.

The Police examined the body, and no mark of violence was seen. No foul play is suspected.

James’ body is at the Mabaruma Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
