Two men trapped in collapsed mining pit

Two men are said to be trapped in a 60-foot-deep mining pit at St. Elizabeth Backdam, Potaro, Region Eight, and efforts are being made to get them out.

In a release, Police Headquarters said the pit caved in on Saturday at about 15:23 hrs. The trapped men have been identified as Franky Hussain, a 32-year-old pork-knocker of North West District, Region One, and Neunes Da Silva, a 38-year-old Brazilian national and pork-knocker from Brazil.

  • Round Two of Dakota 100 and Track Day set for June 28

Round Two of Dakota 100 and Track Day set for June 28

With track enhancement work on the South Dakota Circuit set to wrap up shortly, the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) is planning the second round of its endurance championship for June 28.

The ‘christener’ for the new venue, which gets underway at noon, is expected to attract some of the country’s leading drivers and riders as competitors continue their campaigns in the 2026 circuit racing season.

Fans can look forward to an action-packed programme featuring a mix of circuit racing, motorcycle competition and track day activities, providing entertainment for both seasoned motorsport enthusiasts and newcomers to the sport.

Round Two of the Dakota 100 Championship comes on the heels of a competitive opening round and is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the championship standings.

Drivers and riders will be seeking valuable points while also testing the limits of their machines on the demanding South Dakota Circuit.

The accompanying Track Day segment will offer participants the opportunity to experience the circuit in a controlled environment, allowing drivers to improve their skills, test vehicle performance and enjoy the thrill of motorsport firsthand.

The event has received support from sponsors, including Castrol, GUYOIL, ENet and One Guyana, whose continued backing has helped strengthen local motorsport development.

Meanwhile, according to an official, track work is expected to be completed within the coming days hence the date of the endurance.

The official stated, “We will have a brand-new surface with which to get familiar with and while the layout might be the same, there are a lot of quirks for drivers to watch out for.”

“We have completely flatted the front straightway so no longer is there that dip that we have become familiar with as well as several other changes that racers are going to have to get used to.”

The official noted that with this in mind the club has organised the endurance and is also looking at unofficial practice sessions leading up to the July 12-13 GT3 Challenge De Las Americas.

  • Shanaka, Mishara fifties set up series-levelling win for Sri Lanka against West Indies

Shanaka, Mishara fifties set up series-levelling win for Sri Lanka against West Indies

Dasun Shanaka produced the batting ballistics, Kamil Mishara held the innings together, and Sri Lanka‘s spinners dominated the middle overs, comfortably defending their 194-6.

This 37-run victory brings Sri Lanka level 1-1 in the series against West Indies, with one match to play on Sunday night.

Sri Lanka had been struggling at 88-4 in the 13th over when Shanaka joined Mishara at the crease. The pair then blasted 103 off 42 balls together to propel Sri Lanka to a commanding score of 194-6, hitting seven sixes and nine fours between them

Although Sri Lanka struck twice with the new ball, West Indies had still looked confident in pursuit at 89-2, until Sri Lanka’s spinners went to work. A run out would spark a collapse that cost West Indies six wickets for 32 runs.

They struggled to recover from 122-8 after 15 overs. Dushmantha Chameera, who had struck early in the innings and was effective in the other phases as well, closed out the match in the 19th over, taking three wickets for nine runs.

West Indies were 157 all out, despite Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer having put on 81 off 47 for the third wicket.

    Shanaka explodes

Although he arrived at the crease with Sri Lanka in some trouble, Shanaka was almost immediately aggressive, blasting Roston Chase’s offspin onto the roof of the Sabina Park stadium fourth ball, before crashing him for a four and thumping another six next ball.

All three of these boundaries came through deep midwicket. He also struck a huge six down the ground, and hooked a ball over fine leg as well, as he stormed to a 19-ball fifty.

This equalled his own record for fastest Sri Lanka men’s half century in T20Is. There were also five fours in his 58 off 24, the most memorable of which was a four over extra cover, also off the bowling of Springer.

    Mishara holds the fort

Having come to the crease in the fifth over, Mishara remained unbeaten until the close. He took a while to get going as wickets fell around him. He only found his first boundary off the 16th ball he faced.

But having sauntered to 22 off 23 after 15 overs, he took cues from Shanaka and unleashed some big hitting of his own at the death. He took a particular liking to the bowling of Matthew Forde, whom he walloped twice down the ground in the 17th over. He finished with 61 not out off 40.

    Hetmyer and Powell prosper

Sri Lanka struck twice in the first 10 balls to have West Indies at 9-2, but Hetmyer and Powell soon revived the chase, striking judicious boundaries through the powerplay before looking to up the scoring rate in the middle overs.

They looked like they were putting the hosts on track for a series win when they reaped 18 runs off the eighth over, bowled by Maheesh Theekshana, then 11 off the next one bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga.

But on a track taking a little spin, they had some close calls, particularly Hetmyer who was bowled by Theekshana in the ninth over. However, that delivery turned out to be a no-ball.

Sri Lanka bowlers dominate the middle overs

It took a run out from Pavan Rathnayake to break the Hetmyer-Powell stand, but the spinners soon took the chase by the collar. Theekshana had Powell caught off the leading edge in the 10th over, then Hasaranga struck twice in two balls to remove Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd in the 13th over, his googly proving dangerous again.

Dunith Wellalage and Chameera – who had both struck with the new ball – continued to strike.

By the time West Indies arrived at the 16th over, they were already eight down, with a required rate approaching 15. Hasaranga and Chameera closed the innings out, finishing with three wickets apiece. (ESPNcricinfo)

  • FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2026: Irankunda and Beach star as Socceroos stun Türkiye

FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2026: Irankunda and Beach star as Socceroos stun Türkiye

Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scored memorable goals to fire Australia to a sensational 2-0 win over Türkiye in Vancouver.

The match also belonged to Patrick Beach, the young goalkeeper handed a shock Socceroos debut who went on to thwart Arda Guler and Co.

Eyebrows had been raised when the 22-year-old was preferred to Mat Ryan but he played a key role in Australia’s opener, saving smartly from Guler before launching a lightning counter-attack.

Within seconds, the ball had been switched from one end to the other, and Irankunda tool full advantage, cutting inside brilliantly before rifling home an unstoppable right-foot shot.

Beach continued to impress, tipping an Abdulkerime Bardakci piledriver on to the post and parrying clear a powerful free-kick from the influential Guler.

Australia remained dangerous, though, and secured the points 15 minutes from time when Metcalfe snatched possession in midfield, surged forward and crashed a superb left-foot shot into the bottom corner.

The Socceroos now march on to a top-of-the-table showdown with Group D leaders USA in Seattle, while Türkiye face a must-not-lose encounter with Paraguay. (FIFA)

  • FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2026: McGinn the hero as Scotland clinch memorable victory

FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2026: McGinn the hero as Scotland clinch memorable victory

In a game of few clearcut chances, its was a first-half goal from John McGinn that lifted Scotland past Haiti in the second Group C match at the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

The opening minutes of the match in Boston were back and forth, with both sides looking to find their footing in front of a raucous crowd. Scott McTominay headed over the bar seven minutes into the game and hit the post soon after as Steve Clarke’s men began to turn the screw.

A spirited Haiti continued to put pressure on the Scots, but in the 29th minute McGinn started the party for the Tartan Army.

Forward Che Adams deftly brought down a long ball and laid it off to Ben Gannon-Doak who swung it towards the near post, and while Haiti cut that out, McGinn was waiting on the edge of the box to fire home the rebound with the aid of a deflection.

After the hydration break Haiti found a bit more space creating several half-chances. Ruben Providence came closest for the Concacaf nation, cutting in from the wing and whipping a low shot which Angus Gunn couldn’t hold on to leading to a frenetic penalty-box scramble.

The second half was equally energetic but produced few meaningful opportunities. McGinn could have added a second to his tally after finding himself in space in the Haitian penalty area, but the Aston Villa man fired wide under pressure from Ricardo Ade.

Moments later Providence almost created a goal from nothing for Haiti. The winger sent a low cross through the penalty area but Wilson Isidor was unable to connect at the far post.

Haiti had one more chance to level the score late in the game. Frantdzy Pierrot rose above the Scottish defenders to attack a cross whipped in from the right wing. Pierrot, who had been a handful for the Scots all game, made excellent contact but the ball went just wide of the far post.

This is Scotland’s first victory in a World Cup opener since their 5-2 win over New Zealand at the 1982 FIFA World Cup Spain™. (FIFA)

  • Knicks end 53-year wait for NBA Championship; Brunson is MVP

Knicks end 53-year wait for NBA Championship; Brunson is MVP

The New York Knicks ended a 53-year wait for their third NBA Championship with a 94-90 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks clinched the best-of-seven series 4-1, recovering from a double-figure deficit in all four victories to lift the trophy for the first time since 1973.

The Knicks, who overturned a 29-point deficit in game four to record the biggest comeback win in Finals history, trailed by 16 points in the second quarter and 10 points early in the fourth at Frost Bank Center.

Jalen Brunson, who was unanimously named Most Valuable Player in the Finals, orchestrated their recovery with 45 points, including 15 in the final quarter.

“I have no words. It’s everything I dreamed of,” he told ESPN.

“I’m in awe. It’s why I came to New York.

“Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it.

“Whatever you put in front of us, we’re going to find a way… every time we step on this court. Every time.”

Brunson’s haul was a finals franchise record, beating Willis Read’s 38 in 1970, and he is only the fourth player in history to score at least 45 points in the title-winning game.

The Knicks trailed by 10 points with less than eight minutes left before Brunson scored 10 unanswered points to tie the game at 83-83.

He scored with just over a minute remaining to put the Knicks 90-88 up, and Josh Hart and OG Anunoby free throws extended the lead to four points.

Although Victor Wembanyana missed a three-pointer for the Spurs, Stephon Castle’s dunk brought them back to 92-90 with 16 seconds remaining.

A free throw from Mikal Bridges and Anunoby either side of Dylan Harper’s two missed attempts for the Spurs sealed a memorable victory for the Knicks.

Bridges and Hart – Brunson’s team-mates from Villanova University – scored a combined 27 points, with Bridges contributing 14 and Hart 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Harper finished with 25 points off the bench for the Spurs, while Wembanyama registered 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.

The Spurs became the first team to lead five finals games by at least 10 points in the first quarter.

“We weren’t ready. I wasn’t ready to win a ring – that’s clear,” Wembanyana said.

“We’re not lacking in talent or ability, but we make too many mistakes. I make too many mistakes.”

Wembanyana, the NBA’s defensive player of the year, conceded a turnover and a foul on Brunson in the final 10 seconds of game two as the Knicks snatched a 105-104 victory, although his 32 points helped the Spurs win game three 115-111.

“This is the biggest lesson of my life – the biggest learning moment,” he said.

“It’s painful but I’m not running away from that. I’m using it to fuel me. I’m not satisfied with not winning.

“As a team, there’s no better experience than what we just lived.” (BBC)

  • FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2026: Vinicius Jr earns point for Brazil in 1-1 draw with Morocco

FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2026: Vinicius Jr earns point for Brazil in 1-1 draw with Morocco

Vinicius Jr spared Brazil the embarrassment of defeat in an opening World Cup match for the first since 1934 as his spectacular solo goal earned a draw for the five-time winners against Morocco at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Brazil fell behind in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari lifted the ball over the onrushing Alisson Becker from outside the area following a lapse in communication between the Liverpool goalkeeper and his defenders, Gabriel and Marquinhos.

It was the first time the African champions had scored against South American opposition at the World Cup, having failed to do so against Peru in 1970 and Brazil in 1998.

Morocco continued to dominate and, by the 30th minute, had registered 12 shots – the most Brazil have faced in a World Cup match since their encounter with Mexico in 2018.

Morocco’s midfielder Ismael Saibari (#11) scored to give his team the lead (Photo: FIFA)

But as Mohamed Ouahbi’s side failed to capitalise on their advantage, Brazil drew level 13 minutes before the break through Vinicius.

Making his 50th appearance for the Selecao, he collected a ball from Bruno Guimaraes inside the area, cut inside, and unleashed a fierce strike past Yassine Bounou.

Former West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta almost put Brazil ahead in first-half stoppage time, but his acrobatic effort was tipped behind for a corner.

With several members of Brazil’s triumphant 2002 squad watching on in New Jersey – including Ronaldo, Kaka and Roberto Carlos – Carlo Ancelotti’s side began to move through the gears after the break.

And although chances were at a premium for both sides, Raphinha came closest to finding an elusive second when he narrowly failed to connect with Guimaraes’ low-driven cross across the face of goal.

The draw means Morocco’s wait to win their opening game at a World Cup goes on, while Brazil’s remarkable 92‑year unbeaten first-match record remains intact. (BBC)
