Watchman fatally shot, body found in Essequibo River

A watchman attached to a shipping establishment was on Monday, March 2, 2026 shot and killed at Unity, Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE)

Dead is 24-year-old Vishal Miguel.

On Monday, March 2, the police reported that Miguel, was last seen when he entered the shipping yard at Parika at about 19:00h to commence duties.

Police said at about 08:00h on Wednesday, March 4, the proprietor of the establishment visited the location and discovered that several outboard engines were missing from boats docked in the river. This prompted a search in the area, during which a body was later observed floating in the Essequibo River.

The body, which was retrieved and positively identified as that of Miguel, was later taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday, March 6, by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, who gave the cause of death as a gunshot injury to the head.

The body was subsequently handed over to relatives for funeral arrangements.

Investigations are ongoing.
