Hydromet office issues ‘severe weather’ advisory

The Hydrometeorological Service has issued a ‘severe weather’ advisory, warning residents of flooding in low-lying areas.
The office noted that soils have already become saturated by recent rainfall and that forecast conditions will likely increase the risk of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Further, it warns that hilly areas may experience potential mudslides during heavy downpours and strong winds with lightning strikes in areas of thunderstorms.
Residents are advised to take the necessary precautions to safeguard life and property.
Earlier in the week, the Hydromet office issued a statement indicating that heavy rainfall is expected from Saturday, March 28, to Monday, March 30, 2026.
“Guyana remains under the influence of strong low-level convergence and very moist easterly trade winds, associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is currently positioned east of the country. These conditions are further enhanced by upper-level divergence. Together, these features are contributing to widespread atmospheric instability, increased cloudiness, and periods of heavy convective rainfall across the country,” it outlined.
While increased rainfall activity is anticipated across the country, the highest accumulations are expected over coastal regions on Saturday, the office indicated.
By Sunday and Monday, a gradual shift in rainfall concentration is forecast, with inland and southern Guyana likely to experience the most significant precipitation.
For the period under consideration, rainfall is expected to range between 60 mm and 100 mm over 24 hours on Saturday, with some areas likely exceeding 100 mm. On Sunday and Monday, rainfall is anticipated to average between 30 and 60 mm.
