List of irregular driver’s licences to be released soon – President Ali
President Dr. Irfaan Ali says a list of persons linked to irregularities in the driver’s licensing system will be published soon.
The persons named on that list will be asked to explain themselves.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Guyana Defence Force on Wednesday, President Ali said the reconciliation is ongoing.
“The reconciliation is ongoing, and what you will see very soon is a list published of persons who will be asked to come in to explain the issues.
“I know that list is being prepared,” Dr Ali said.
This update follows earlier warnings from the President that persons who did not follow the proper process to obtain licences would be given six weeks to surrender themselves or face prosecution, licence suspension, and public exposure.
At the time, President Ali had said a technology-driven audit found serious problems in the system.
He explained that the audit tracked the entire licensing process and uncovered major discrepancies, including cases in which more persons received practical certificates than passed the theory exam.
He had said authorities had identified persons who got practical certificates without passing the theory test.
On Wednesday, he also admitted that enforcement remains a challenge, despite stricter fines already being in place.
“We had increased the fines… but enforcement is a problem,” Dr Ali said, adding that this is being improved with the use of cameras.
The President also said he has asked the Attorney General to review the laws and recommend any needed changes.
“I have asked the Attorney General to once again look at what additional measures will be needed and to ensure whenever amendments are needed those amendments will be in place,” he said.
