Western Tigers registered their first victory of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Season Eight campaign after recovering from an early setback to defeat Camptown FC 4-1 on Saturday at the National Training Centre (NTC), Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Jamal Fraser, Hakeem Legall, Michael Oie, and Rondel Peters scored for Western Tigers, who responded strongly after Marlon Bethel handed Camptown the lead in the opening minute.
The result allowed Western Tigers to rebound from their 1-0 loss to the Guyana Defence Force in their season opener last weekend.
Camptown made a dream start when Bethel found the net in the first minute, but their advantage was erased when Fraser equalised in the 13th.
Legall completed Western Tigers’ first-half turnaround with a goal in the 38th minute, sending his team into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Camptown’s chances of mounting a comeback suffered a further setback in the 61st minute when Eusi Phillips was dismissed after receiving his second yellow card.
Western Tigers used their numerical advantage to take control of the contest. Oie extended the lead in the 72nd minute before substitute Peters completed the 4-1 victory in the 87th.
In Saturday’s opening match, Fruta Conquerors secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ann’s Grove United.
The teams remained level throughout the first half, but Jermain Harry broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart. His 48th-minute strike proved to be the deciding goal as Fruta Conquerors protected their advantage to secure all three points.
The Elite League continues on Sunday night with another double-header at the National Training Centre.
