…damaged car found in Corentyne workshop
A 51-year-old Headteacher was killed following a hit-and-run accident on the Rose Hall Town Public Road, Corentyne, in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), on Monday afternoon.
Dead is Sonia Williams of Chesney Housing Scheme, who was the Headteacher of Kildonan Primary School. The accident occurred at about 15:21h in front of an insurance company in Rose Hall Town, where Williams had gone after school to collect a voucher for her spectacles.
Police said Williams’ motor car, PAK 5566, was stationary on the southern side of the road when she reportedly attempted to open the right-side front door.
A white car travelling west reportedly collided with Williams and the opened door, after which the driver continued along the roadway without stopping. Williams fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries. She was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she succumbed at about 22:30h while receiving medical attention.
Her son-in-law, Noah Sills, said he and his wife received word that Williams had been seriously injured.
Sills said his wife left Linden and met him in Georgetown before they travelled to Berbice and went to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. “We were with mom until her untimely passing,” he said. With Williams dead and a suspect now in police custody, Sills said the family wants the law to take its course.
“We are honestly hoping for justice for our mother-in-law and for our mother. We’re just hoping for justice. Just hoping that the law takes its action and the person involved, the person responsible, gets held accountable for his actions,” Sills said. “This is not something we foresaw ever happening. And so we are distraught at this time. It’s affecting each and every one of us deeply,” Sills said. He remembered Williams particularly for the way she treated those around her.
“She’s a very loving individual, her son would say. She’s a very forgiving individual. She’s quiet. She’s kind. Anybody that knows Miss Sonia, whatever name you might know her by or as, knows that she’s a loving, caring, she’s a warm, tender-hearted individual,” he related.
Sills said Williams had been the Headteacher of Kildonan Primary for approximately two years and had previously served as Head of Rose Hall Primary School. Throughout her career, she taught at several schools along the Corentyne.
Meanwhile, police have since identified the vehicle suspected to have been involved in the accident as motor car PJJ 7624, and the driver as a resident of Hampshire, Corentyne. The damaged car was subsequently located at a workshop on the Corentyne. Police also invited the operator of the workshop to provide a statement as part of the investigation. Police also took the suspected driver to the accident scene, where he pointed out certain directions to investigators. Both the driver and vehicle are in police custody as investigations continue.
