…as works progress on 13 housing schemes
A total of 3245 house lots were allocated in the first half of the year, according to the 2026 Mid-Year Report released by the Ministry of Finance on Monday.
Of this amount, 65 per cent were allotted to low-and-moderate-income households, 27 per cent to middle-income households and eight per cent to young professionals.
Additionally, a total of 4883 land titles and transports were distributed in the first half of 2026, and more than 2000 are expected to be distributed in the second half of the year.
Moreover, development works were completed in 9 new housing areas, and works are progressing on 13 housing developments in areas such as Perseverance, Leonora, Wales, Vigilance, Burma and Old England. Across all income categories, 483 homes were constructed.
Furthermore, works are ongoing for low- and moderate-income houses in areas such as Amelia’s Ward, La Reconnaissance, and Yarrowkabra; and in Bartica, Groenveldt, Palmyra, and Leonora for middle-income earners.
For young professional homes, construction is progressing in Great Diamond, La Bonne Intention, and Prospect.
In keeping with the Government’s mandate to ensure affordable home construction, housing support initiatives such as the steel and cement subsidy and the Yarrowkabra Homestead Programme continued during the review period. In addition, citizens continue to benefit from direct assistance measures such as foundation support and construction advancement subsidies.
Meanwhile, the report noted that the Government remains resolute in the development of stronger communities across Guyana through fortifying public infrastructure across the country. This includes the ongoing assessment for the construction of interlock concrete drains and roads in areas such as Onderneeming, Anna Catherina, La Parfaite Harmonie, Perseverance, Covent Garden, La Bonne Intention, Bath, Palmyra, Bartica, Lethem, and Amelia’s Ward.
Moreover, it was noted that in the first half of the year, a total of 625 LED street lamps were installed across the country, and a further 375 are slated for installation by the end of the year.
In addition, works are ongoing to develop mini-industrial areas in Golden Grove, Enmore, Wales, Meten-Meer-Zorg, and No. 75 Village, as well as new and improved recreational and green spaces, including in areas such as Meten-Meer-Zorg, Cummings Lodge, Fort Ordinance, and Hampshire.
Some $89.9 billion of the budgeted $159.1 billion for the sector was spent by mid-year to expand affordable housing for citizens.
The Government is targeting the construction of 40,000 new homes by 2031. More than 270 companies – local, regional, and international – have formally indicated their interest in constructing houses across Guyana as part of this commitment.
The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) remains on track to clear the backlog for all regions except Region Four by 2027.
In July, Housing Minister Collin Croal disclosed that there were some 80,000 applicants in the system countrywide – of which approximately 50,000 are from Region Four.
The Housing Minister explained that one of the biggest challenges is access to land, especially for Region Four, where the demand is high.
It was recently reported that the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC) is working on making approximately 8000 acres of land available to assist the Housing Ministry in clearing the backlog across the country.
Meanwhile, as the Government continues to process applications for Region Four, Minister within the Housing Ministry Vanessa Benn emphasised that priority will be given to applicants who have been in the system since 2021 and earlier.
Minister Benn has also acknowledged that there are some cases where individuals have been allocated lands but are still waiting to access them to start construction. However, she noted that the Government is working diligently to ensure everyone with allocations can access their lands.
