A 27-year-old Chef of Barr Street, Albouystown was on Saturday shot to his leg at Hunter Street, Albouystown, Georgetown. Police said the incident occurred at about 23:30h.

According to a police statement, the man was at the the location with several other persons when he was approached by a suspect from a western direction, who was armed with a handgun.

The suspect allegedly pointed the firearm in the victim’s direction and discharged two rounds, which struck him to his left thigh. He then escaped on a waiting motorcycle, which was parked on the western side of Hunter Street.

The victim was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by public-spirited persons, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and admitted as a patient. His condition is listed as stable.

CCTV cameras were observed in the area and will be reviewed.

No arrest has been made.

Investigations are ongoing.

Police have confirmed a second death following the fatal river mishap that occurred on Thursday, in the vicinity of Tapir Landing along the Cuyuni River.

Dead is Enzo Mateus Alves De Aviz, a 23-year-old Brazilian national and gold miner of Tipir Backdam and Belem City, Para State, Brazil. His death follows that of Steve Daniels, a 57-year-old boat captain of Kartabo Village, Lower Mazaruni River, who died during the incident.

According to police, De Aviz was initially admitted to the Bartica Regional Hospital in a serious condition after the mishap. On Friday at approximately 08:45 hrs, he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further medical treatment.

However, police said that around 22:00 hrs on the same day, De Aviz succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.

His body is currently at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

A G$44m grassroots project designed to transform the future of football in Guyana has received high praise from world governing body FIFA.

Amiel Mohammed, FIFA’s Regional Member Association Development Manager, conducted a whirlwind nationwide tour to assess the early stages of the newly launched Youth Ensemble U13 Programme.

The initiative, a joint venture between FIFA and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), aims to solve a long-standing logistical headache by establishing a permanent, structured annual calendar for youth football across the country.

Accompanied by GFF officials, Mohammed began his tour at the Buxton Ground, taking in East Demerara Football Association playoff matches between Melanie FC and Mahaicony Western Lions, as well as Haslington Stars against Plaisance FC.

He then moved on to the National Training Centre (NTC) to watch East Bank Football Association fixtures, including Circuit Ville Jaguars FC versus Timehri United FC, and Herstelling Raiders FC against Kuru Kururu FC.

The tour concluded at the West Ruimveldt Ground, where the Georgetown Football Association hosted a formal youth march-past.

“This is what football development is all about,” Mohammed said. “Being out here on the field, having the landscape and giving the youths the opportunity to play in a structured manner.”

Mohammed added that the project, funded under the FIFA Forward regulations, was born of a shared vision with GFF President Wayne Forde to inject adequate funding into a healthy and enriching grassroots environment.

Establishing sustainable, fully-funded youth leagues has historically been one of the biggest challenges for football associations across the Caribbean and Caribbean-adjacent regions.

GFF President Wayne Forde admitted that the financial burden of running competitive youth structures is often too heavy for nations to carry alone.

“We know the foundation of football is at the grassroots level,” Forde said. “It has been a huge challenge for many countries within our region to establish sustainable, well-structured youth competitions, particularly youth leagues. The investment required to achieve this would not be possible without the support of the governing body.”

Forde noted that the high-level FIFA visit offered vital reassurance regarding the global governing body’s commitment to the GFF’s long-term strategy.

What is the Youth Ensemble Programme?

The transformational project is structured to create a genuine pipeline from community pitches to elite international football, impacting more than 3,000 young players across 130 clubs nationwide.

Over the coming weeks, the tournament will split its age groups across weekends to maximise impact. Under-13 matches are scheduled for Saturdays using a fast-paced 9v9 cross-field format, while the Under-15 divisions will take over on Sundays, playing traditional 11v11 football.

The competition will use a blend of round-robin and knockout formats, culminating in a high-stakes National Playoff stage. That phase will see 20 top clubs divided into four groups, battling it out for a place in the semi-finals and national finals. (Modified GFF Press Release)

History was created in Kabakaburi, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), on Friday as the community hosted its first-ever organised football competition during the ongoing Blue Water Shipping Girls U15 National Championship.

The landmark occasion saw Kabakaburi Secondary face Charity Secondary in a preliminary-round encounter, marking a significant milestone for football development within the indigenous community.

Charity Secondary secured a 2–0 victory, with a goal coming from Razeena Wilson alongside an own goal conceded by Kabakaburi Secondary. Despite the result, the match represented a proud and memorable moment for the players and the Kabakaburi community, which turned out in large numbers to support its youth competing on home soil for the first time in an organised tournament.

Now in its third year, the Blue Water Shipping Girls U15 National Championship continues to play a vital role in the growth of women’s football across Guyana, providing young student-athletes with opportunities to compete in a safe, inclusive, and structured environment.

The 2026 edition of the tournament is expanding to feature more than 70 schools nationwide. Participating teams represent Moruca, Essequibo Coast, West Demerara, Georgetown, East Coast Demerara, East Bank Demerara, West Berbice, East Berbice, Bartica, Mahdia, Rupununi, and Linden, reflecting the Guyana Football Federation’s commitment to grassroots football development.

History was made on the rugged terrain of the Linden-to-Mabura Road this morning as a packed field of 60 cyclists pedalled off to launch the special Diamond Jubilee edition of Guyana’s Independence three-stage cycle race.

Organised by the Guyana Cycle Federation alongside the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission, the 60th anniversary event represents a significant departure from tradition.

Organisers have introduced a redesigned route explicitly engineered to test the peloton’s endurance across more punishing, varied terrain.

The celebratory race got underway at 07:00 local time, officially sent on its way by Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, alongside National Sports Commission Vice-Chairperson Cristy Campbell and Region 10 Regional Executive Officer Dr Gregory Harris.

In a powerful nod to the enduring spirit of Guyanese cycling, the impressive 60-strong peloton includes 79-year-old veteran rider Monty Parris, who lines up against the country’s elite.

The demanding 45-mile opening leg required riders in the Open, Junior, Category 4, and Masters divisions to journey deep along the Mabura Road to the 23km pole before turning back to face the unyielding terrain.

A simultaneous 25-mile race is also underway for the Ladies and Juvenile classes, ensuring a comprehensive showcase of the nation’s cycling depth.

The peloton faces a swift turnaround for Stage Two later this afternoon. Setting off at 14:30h from Kara Kara, the riders will tackle a gruelling 60-mile journey to Long Creek and back.

The drama will culminate Sunday morning with a strategic, high-stakes final stage where the riders will depart from Schoonord, race down to Parika, and make a historic return across the Dr Bharrat Jagdeo Bridge before a frantic, high-speed finish outside the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

A Labourer of Nigg, Corentyne, Berbice was stabbed to death on Friday afternoon by an 18-year-old, also of Nigg.

Carter Baboolall, 48 years old, was reportedly involved in a misunderstanding with the teen, Dave Latchminarine called “fat boy” at around 17:40h.

The News Room understands that the altercation escalated into a scuffle during which Latchminarine, armed with a knife, stabbed Baboolall multiple times on the left side of his body, resulting in fatal injuries. The suspect then fled on foot.

Baboolall was rushed to Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.

One eyewitness said he saw villagers pulling Baboolall from a nearby trench after the incident.

Meanwhile, Latchminarine’s mother, Khemrajee Ramcharran, told reporters that she last saw her son on Monday. She explained that around 18:00h on Friday, she was contacted about the incident and went to investigate.

“I find out from them boys that work at the car wash and them say that ‘ fat boy go to pump his bicycle wheel and this guy (Baboolall) ride pass me son then turn back and cuff me son three cuff in he face,” she recounted.

She added that a police officer who was at the wash at attempted to catch the fleeing suspect but was unsuccessful.

Ramcharran added that her son ran away, leaving his slippers behind. She said efforts to locate and contact relatives of Latchminarine have been unsuccessful.

“Me nah even know if dead or alive or where he deh, me can’t say. Me promise the Police officers them as soon as me find her or hear where he deh me go carry he to the station,” Ramcharran revealed.

Police continue their investigation into the incident.

The 60th Independence Tennis Open is heating up at the National Park Tennis Courts, with just one day of play remaining after a packed schedule on Friday across the Open, Junior, and Novice categories.

In the Men’s Open round of 16, Gerald Scotland secured a comfortable 6-2 victory over Leyland Leacock to advance, while Kevin Matai booked his quarterfinal spot with a matching 6-2 win against Akil Gittens. Leacock quickly bounced back in the Men’s Over-35 category, claiming a 6-1 win over Joffrey Bonnet.

In other Over-35 action, Phillip Squires defeated Benjettan Osborne 6-2, and Martin Campbell mirrors that scoreline with a 6-2 victory over Harry Wu.

Competition was equally intense in the Novice division, where S. Henry edged out David Cheong 6-4 in a highly competitive men’s match, while J. Harry dominated the women’s side with a 6-0 win over Joella Serieux.

The junior categories delivered some of the day’s most exciting tennis.

In the girls’ division, Breyanna Younge put on a spectacular performance, digging deep to win consecutive, hard-fought 7-5 matches against both Khloe Andrew and Liza Singh.

In the Girls’ Under-12 category, Monalisa Graham started strong with a 6-3 win over Denesia Boston before falling by that same 6-3 scoreline to Israbella Grannum. Meanwhile, the Boys’ Under-12 division saw Zion Hickerson defeat Yoshua Mangru 6-1, while Hayden Chan blanked Rahul Narayan 6-0.

The tournament is set for an exciting finish as the 60th Independence Tennis Open concludes this Sunday at the National Park Tennis Courts.

Police in Regional Division # 6 are investigating the discovery of ten AK-47 rifles which were found on Friday during an operation conducted along No. 11 Village Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

During the operation, ranks were conducting a stop-and-search exercise along the Berbice River Bridge Access Road between 01:00hrs and 04:30hrs, when a black Toyota Fielder Wagon motor car bearing registration number HC 9018 was stopped, during which the driver of the vehicle drove away from the ranks and made good his escape eastward.

Acting on information received, ranks later conducted a search along No. 11 Village Public Road, where ten AK-47 rifles were found wrapped in plastic and cloth.

The firearms were examined and bore markings consistent with 7.62x39mm rifles. It was also observed that sections of the firearms appeared to have been tampered with, suspected to have been done to obscure serial numbers.

The firearms were escorted to the Central Police Station, where they were lodged pending further investigation.

Further investigations led to the identification of the driver of motor car #HC 9018 as a 33-year-old taxi driver of Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.

The man was subsequently intercepted at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, in the said motor car and taken into custody.

Additionally, about 18:00hrs, motor car #PSS 4272, a white Toyota Runx suspected to have also been involved in the transportation of the firearms, was found abandoned at Second Street, Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.

Some of Guyana’s finest athletic talent is set for a massive weekend of competition as the 10th annual Independence Road Race and Track Meet takes centre stage, fuelled by a renewed partnership between the overseas-based organisation Guyana Ex-Athletes and Friends Inc. and the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).

The action begins on Saturday morning at the National Track and Field Facility in Leonora, where a stellar field of local and international stars will lock horns in front of an expectant home crowd.

The spotlight will shine brightest on Carifta Games 800m gold medallist Olivia Solomon, who headlines a stacked roster.

Solomon will be joined by a hungry contingent of athletes fresh from representing Guyana at the South American Games in Panama, as well as several senior standouts returning home from competitive collegiate scholarships in the United States and Jamaica.

AAG Vice-President Mark Scott has urged the public to turn out in numbers to support the nation’s premier track and field competitors.

“We have heats in the 100 and 200 for the 18 and over athletes; all other age groups, U-12, U-15 and U-18, are timed finals,” Scott explained.

“I want to encourage the general public to come out and support good track and field. We have our Carifta medallist, Ms Olivia Solomon, in the 800 metres; she will be on show. Also, we have the athletes that went to the South American Games in Panama, and then our senior athletes returning from scholarships in the USA and Jamaica.”

The high-profile weekend has also drawn the attention of prominent sports agent Cubi Seegobin, the mastermind behind the AAG’s lucrative Adidas sponsorship deal. Seegobin, who is attending a Guyanese meet in person for the very first time, is eager to scout the local pipeline.

“I’m looking forward to going to the meet and seeing the young talent,” Seegobin said. “It is my first time seeing a meet in Guyana, so it should be an experience. I’ve seen tapes of meets, but this will give me first-hand knowledge so I can make some suggestions on how we can better put together meets moving forward.”

On the track, senior competitors in the 18-and-over bracket will battle over the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m events, alongside specialised 2x200m and 2x400m relays. The field events will feature intense competition in the long jump and javelin.

The excitement shifts gears on Sunday, May 24, as the road racing segment anchors itself into Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Republic celebrations.

Organised in collaboration with Burgette Williams Forde and heavily backed by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the road events have undergone a major structural revamp.

Unlike previous editions, Sunday’s road races will both start and finish at the Guyana Police Force Ground, Eve Leary.

Registration has been declared completely free for all participants, with organisers guaranteeing that every single runner who crosses the finish line will receive a commemorative medal.

The day’s schedule splits into two distinct sessions:

• 14:00 (2:00 PM): The junior categories take to the pavement. The 1-mile road races will feature fierce competition across the Under-9 and Under-12 brackets.
• 16:00 (4:00 PM): The elite seniors and masters athletes take over the asphalt for the highly anticipated 5K and 10K road races.
