    2020 elections trial resumes

The trial into the 2020 General and Regional Elections resumed on Monday following a recess, with Sasenarine Singh continuing his testimony.

Singh, who previously testified in February, had raised concerns about the use of a spreadsheet and the pace at which Statements of Poll (SOPs) were called during the tabulation process.

On Monday morning, when the trial resumed before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, the Court attempted to continue playing video recordings taken by Singh during his time at the Ashmins Building. The tabulation for District Four was conducted in this building.

However, the proceedings were briefly interrupted due to difficulties encountered while playing one of the discs. Despite the technical issues, some of the videos were played, with Singh identifying individuals and explaining the events captured.

In one recording, Singh described a “big” commotion in the District Four tabulation room, noting that observers were present and a heated debate was unfolding, with former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield at the centre of it.

Some of the defendants in the case; namely, They are: former APNU+AFC government minister Volda Lawrence; former GECOM Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield; former GECOM Returning Officer for District Four Clairmont Mingo; former GECOM Deputy Chief Election Officer Roxanne Myers; APNU+AFC’s Chief Scrutineer Carol Smith Joseph at court on Monday (Photos: News Room/ July 29, 2024)

In another video, Singh pointed to members of the diplomatic community meeting with then Foreign Affairs Minister Karen Cummings.

Singh also told the court that on August 28, 2020, he had a confrontation with former Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo. Singh further confirmed that he was part of the team that conducted the national recount process.

During cross-examination, attorney Nigel Hughes and Eusi Anderson posed several questions to Singh. Anderson focused on Singh’s previous roles and his current capacity as an ambassador, in particular.

The trial currently has several voire dires, which are being used to determine the admissibility of key pieces of evidence.

During Monday proceeding, the prosecution also informed that court submissions some submissions of the voire dire proceedings will be made on Friday.

Nine individuals are currently before the court charged with conspiring to manipulate the results of the March 2020 General and Regional Elections in favour of the APNU+AFC coalition, with the intention of denying victory to the PPP.

Among those charged are former government minister Volda Lawrence, former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, former Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo, and former Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers.

The controversy surrounding the March 2020 elections led to a five-month delay in the declaration of results, before PPP candidate Irfaan Ali was sworn in as President on August 2, 2020.

The trial is set to continue on April 24, 2026.

  • West Indies legend Gayle invests in Glasgow T20 franchise

West Indies legend Gayle invests in Glasgow T20 franchise

West Indies legend Chris Gayle has been announced as the co-owner of a Glasgow-based franchise taking part in this summer’s inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL).

Gayle has partnered with Mugafi Group, an India-based entertainment business, with the team to be known as the Glasgow Mugafians.

An investment group led by Rahul Dravid and Ravichandran Ashwin had been originally expected to take ownership of the ETPL’s Glasgow franchise.

However, BBC Sport has been told they are set to pivot their interest to the team based out of Dublin instead.

Gayle, 46, played 103 Tests, 301 ODIs and 79 T20 internationals for West Indies between 1999 and 2021 and has been one of the most recognisable faces in franchise cricket.

“Stepping into the role of co-owner of Glasgow Mugafians marks an exciting new chapter for me,” Gayle said.

“Europe represents cricket’s final frontier, and the ETPL has the potential to unravel promising local talent and nurture future heroes who will strengthen the sport in that region. I can’t wait to get started on this new journey.”

The ETPL is being run in collaboration with the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands with teams based out of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Bollywood actor and film producer Abhishek Bachchan is a part-owner of the league in conjunction with Rules Sport Tech, a private Indian company.

As reported by BBC Sport earlier this year, the franchises have been sold for £11.1m ($15m) over a 10-year period.

The tournament is set to be played from August 26 to September 20. (BBC)

  • Ethan Bulkan, Emily Fung-A-Fat and Louis DaSilva standout at Junior Squash Nationals

Ethan Bulkan, Emily Fung-A-Fat and Louis DaSilva standout at Junior Squash Nationals

The future of Guyanese squash looks increasingly formidable following a week of high-octane drama at the 2026 National Junior Squash Championships held over the past week at the National Racquet Centre.

Supported by Moo (Acado Guyana Ltd), the tournament served as a vital litmus test ahead of the Caribbean Junior Championships in the British Virgin Islands in July.

With a draw featuring 52 players—including a significant contingent from Queen’s College—the depth of the local game has never looked healthier.

    FULL RESULTS: https://www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/Moo-Junior-National-Squash-Championships-2026

The week was defined by a bittersweet farewell to Louis DaSilva, as the ‘Junior Legend’  brought the curtain down on an extraordinary junior career with the Heart of a Champion award and a dominant display in the U19 category.

DaSilva, the current CASA U19 champion, showed exactly why he is considered the benchmark, overcoming the rising Ethan Bulkan in a clinical 3-0 performance.

While DaSilva ages out of the junior circuit, his legacy remains intact. He exits with a haul of titles, including the Boys’ Doubles alongside brother Brenno and the Mixed Doubles with Kaylee Lowe.

If DaSilva represents the present, the Bulkan brothers represent a thrilling future. The rivalry between Ethan and Egan provided the week’s most compelling storyline. Ethan Bulkan proved to be the man for the big occasion, securing a remarkable double by taking both the U17 and U15 titles.

In the U17 final, Ethan was clinical in a 3-0 victory over his brother. Egan, however, refused to go quietly, pushing Ethan to four sets in the U15 showdown.

While Ethan emerged with the silverware, Egan’s tenacity earned him the “Most Improved Boy” honours, setting the stage for a potential rematch at Jr. CASA.

On the girls’ side, Zoey McDonald emerged as a rising powerhouse as McDonald claimed both the U13 and U15 titles after a series of gruelling encounters with Tehani Munroe, including a five-set thriller that showcased her mental fortitude. Her ascent was recognised with the ‘Most Improved Girl’ award.

Meanwhile, Emily Fung-A-Fat mirrored Ethan Bulkan’s success by securing a double of her own, winning both the U17 and U19 titles.

Her victory over Kaylee Lowe in the U19 final was a tactical masterclass, with scores of 11-5, 11-7, 11-7.

Two freed in gas station bombing case as Magistrate upholds no-case submission

Two of the seven persons charged in connection with the deadly explosion at the Mobil gas station were on Monday freed after the Court upheld a no-case submission.

Ramesh Pramdeo and Wayne Correia were discharged by Principal Magistrate Alisha George at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, following arguments by defence attorney Bernard DaSilva that the prosecution had failed to establish a case against his clients.

DaSilva further contended that Pramdeo and Correia should have been treated as witnesses rather than accused persons in the matter. They had been charged with aiding and abetting the act of terrorism

During the proceedings, the prosecution tendered 244 witness statements, 39 exhibits, 61 discs, three sets of photographs and one flash drive. However, the case against Pramdeo and Correia focused only on evidence directly related to them.

Meanwhile, a third person, 33-year-old Venezuelan national Jennifer Rodrigues, who faced the same charge as Pramdeo and Correia, was committed to stand trial at the High Court.

Other suspects, including the alleged mastermind Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, remain before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Poedemo, along with Alexander Bettencourt, Johnny Boodram and Krystal La Cruz, has been charged in connection with the incident. Poedemo has since admitted that he is solely responsible for the crime. They were charged separately and their case has been adjourned to May 20.

The October 26, 2025 attack resulted in the death of young Soraya Bourne.

  • Coaches and Administrators upskilled in landmark First Aid initiative

Coaches and Administrators upskilled in landmark First Aid initiative

In a major push to bolster safety standards across the sporting landscape, over 50 coaches and administrators gathered at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Monday for a specialised First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training workshop.

The initiative, a collaboration between the Guyana Life Saving Society, the Canadian Life Saving Society, and the National Sports Commission (NSC), marks a strategic shift in the professional development of the nation’s sporting personnel.

Beyond technical coaching, the programme equips leaders of Guyana’s athletes to serve as immediate first responders in medical emergencies.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, described the training as an “unparalleled and historic” step for the country.

“The government of Guyana sees the safety of sportsmen and women, administrators, and every Guyanese as something important,” Ninvalle said during Monday’s opening session.

The Director emphasised that this training is part of a broader, systemic effort to build capacity within the sports sector.

This includes the recent certification of 13 waterfront lifeguards following a three-day intensive course at Lake Mainstay, as well as the successful re-certification of 15 existing lifeguards earlier this year.

Under international standards, these certifications are subject to periodic renewal—a process the NSC is enforcing to ensure personnel remain ready for any situation.

The urgency for these skills has grown in tandem with the record-breaking interest in the NSC’s ‘Learn to Swim’ programme. Participation has surged from 1,500 registrants in 2025 to over 3,000 for this year’s Easter sessions.

Recognising this increased public engagement, Ninvalle confirmed that the First Aid workshop will become an annual fixture on the national sporting calendar.

“What we will learn from this First Aid programme, let us not keep it to ourselves, let us share it,” Ninvalle urged the attendees. “The NSC aims to ensure, with the resources we have, that we continue to train and develop personnel.”

By integrating emergency response into the coaching curriculum, the NSC aims to build a more resilient sporting ecosystem where participant safety is as important as performance quality.

More so, Patrick D’Almada, representing the Canadian Life Saving Society, underscored the universality of the skills being taught. “First aid is a life-saving skill, and we know something could happen to anybody,” D’Almada noted.

The relationship between Canadian society and Guyana’s sporting bodies is one built on longevity: having first partnered in 2012, the collaboration has included training sessions in 2014, 2015, 2024, 2025, and now 2026.

  • Tilak ends MI’s wait for victory with maiden IPL ton

Tilak ends MI’s wait for victory with maiden IPL ton

India batter Tilak Varma produced an innings of thrilling acceleration to record his first Indian Premier League century and earn Mumbai Indians a crucial and commanding win over Gujarat Titans.

Left-hander Tilak, who came in at 44-3 in the sixth over, had only 19 runs from his first 22 deliveries and no boundaries.

But he changed gears to devastating effect, finishing with eight fours and seven sixes as he took 82 runs from his next 23 balls to finish 101 not out from 45 balls.

He reached three figures by ending the innings with a six and a four which meant Mumbai, who had dropped to the bottom of the standings after four consecutive defeats, posted 199-5.

On a good night for five-time champions Mumbai, Jasprit Bumrah finally took his first wicket of the tournament with the first delivery of the chase.

The India seamer, wicketless across five innings this year, had left-hander Sai Sudharsan caught at cover.

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler was out to a tight lbw decision for five in the next over and Titans continued to lose regular wickets as they were bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs.

The win lifts Mumbai up to seventh, a place behind Gujarat. (BBC)

  • Region 10 representatives, key agencies trained on forest protection through EU partnership

Region 10 representatives, key agencies trained on forest protection through EU partnership

The Ministry of Natural Resources, through the Guyana Forestry Commission, has partnered with the European Union (EU) to advance efforts aimed at reducing deforestation and forest degradation within the Amazon Rainforest.

The initiative forms part of the Amazonia+ Programme funded by the EU and led by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in partnership with the Pau Costa Foundation. The programme promotes the responsible use of fire as a tool for sustainable land management, while simultaneously reducing the risk and impact of destructive wildfires across the region.

As part of this effort, a series of training sessions under the Community Brigades initiative (BRICOM) was conducted from April 14-16, 2026, in Linden, Region 10. The training brought together representatives from local communities and key national institutions, including the Civil Defence Commission, the Guyana Fire Service, the Protected Areas Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Participants were engaged in practical and technical sessions designed to deepen their understanding of fire behaviour, strengthen the operational readiness of community brigades and promote approaches that balance environmental protection with sustainable community development.

This initiative is critical for Guyana as it reinforces the country’s commitment to sustainable forest management and climate resilience. By equipping communities and institutions with the knowledge and tools to manage fire responsibly, Guyana is better positioned to protect its vast forest resources while supporting livelihoods.

The Ministry of Natural Resources remains committed to working with international partners and local stakeholders to ensure that Guyana’s forests continue to serve as a cornerstone of its environmental and economic sustainability. (Ministry of Natural Resources media release)

  • IPL 2026: Relief for KKR as Rinku and Roy seal first win of season

IPL 2026: Relief for KKR as Rinku and Roy seal first win of season

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered their first win of IPL 2026 with their spinners bossing on a tailormade surface and their lower middle order bailing out their misfiring top order.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) played the slow surface smartly, got to 81-0 with the bat and then bossed the defence for 15 overs even though they had floundered to score just 155, but all it takes is one bad over for these defences to fall apart.

Dropped on eight, Rinku Singh, struggling for runs so far, began the turnaround with a slog-swept six off Ravi Bishnoi at the start of the 16th over and ended it with a six that brought up his fifty and the win with two balls to spare.

However, it was Anukul Roy, who didn’t get to bowl because of a left-hand heavy RR batting, who took down the difficult deliveries in his 29 off 16 after the ask had reached 67 off 33, the only time it crossed two a ball.

KKR had to fight back from ordinary starts with both bat and ball. Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine reined RR back in with eight overs for 40 runs and five wickets, and a three-wicket 19th over from Kartik Tyagi denied RR a finishing kick.

Jofra Archer, though, set the tone of the defence with a first-ball wicket for the third match in a row before the spinners squeezed the life out of the KKR batting, but luck gave Rinku and KKR a second chance, which they grabbed.

Vaibhav Sooryavasnhi, Yashasvi Jaiswal play the conditions

This has to be the slowest Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (46) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (39) have played together. There was early recognition there that this pitch was not going to be easy for new batters. So they gave themselves some time and looked to prefer quantity of runs to the pace.

However, it didn’t stop Sooryavanshi from hitting Narine for a second-ball six after he introduced himself to Jasprit Bumrah with a first-ball six. It was only a 22-run final powerplay over from Cameron Green that turned 41 into 63.

    Varun, Narine check in

Sooryavanshi has a habit of making a big statement early against big bowlers as seen in the cases of Bumrah and Narine. He looked to do the same with Varun second ball he faced, took the big leg side on, and holed out to deep midwicket.

Had he connected with this wrong’un, he would have brought up his slowest IPL fifty. Let it sink in that said fifty would have taken just 28 balls.

KKR now burst through this small opening. Dhruv Jurel was stumped on the reverse sweep off Varun, Narine slowed the ball down to have Jaiswal caught at extra cover for 39 off 29.

Riyan Parag looked to slog Varun and was bowled. In his last over, Narine brought out the carrom ball to first go past Donovan Ferreira and then create a return catch on the last ball of his assignment. The 10 middle overs had produced 5 for 61.

    Tyagi turns in career-best figures

Now that the spin bowlers were done, RR were still hopeful of a decent score against an inexperienced pace attack. Shimron Hetmyer and Ravindra Jadeja’s presence meant Roy would still not be used.

However, the left-hand batters executed poorly in the 19th over. Jadeja played an in-between pull to be caught at long leg. Hetmyer looked for a cute sweep on a rank full toss and got a leading edge to deep third.

A third bonus wicket made it a personal best of 3-22 for Tyagi. RR had failed to double their first partnership and needed to do something they had done only three times in their history: successfully defend 155 or below in a full T20 game. (ESPNcricinfo)

  • David Fernandes returns as Guyana Squash Association President

David Fernandes returns as Guyana Squash Association President

The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) has maintained a steady hand at the helm following its Annual General Meeting and Election of Office Bearers on Saturday.

Incumbent President David Fernandes was elected unopposed to lead the association for the upcoming term, heading an executive body that reflects both continuity and a progressive shift in the sport’s administration.

A defining feature of the newly elected board is the significant surge in female representation within executive roles.

While much of the previous slate has returned to office, the board’s composition highlights a deliberate move toward inclusivity.

The executive team includes Loraine Ince as Vice-President, Victoria Arjoon as Secretary, Ashley DeGroot-Khalil as Treasurer, and Ashley Khalil as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.

Further leadership comes from Roseann Bulkan, who oversees Junior Affairs, and Tian Edwards, who serves as Chairperson of Competitions.

Deje Dias rounds out the committee as the representative for Clubs, while Owen Verwey continues as the Returning Past President and Alex Arjoon remains the Athletes Representative.

Due to the absence of an AGM last year, the current executive has accepted a one-year term in a gesture of good faith to ensure the association remains aligned with its constitutional requirements and best governance practices.

Reflecting on the successful election, President Fernandes emphasised the unique culture of the sport in Guyana, noting that the association operates less like a rigid organisation and more like a dedicated family.

He stressed that as opportunities for Guyanese players continue to expand on the international stage, maintaining this sense of unity is essential to safeguarding the sport’s long-term future.

The association is entering this new term on the heels of major infrastructural milestones. A definitive highlight of 2025 was the commissioning of the new doubles courts, a long-held dream that has now become a reality.

This expansion brings the total number of singles courts at the public facility to five, drastically increasing the training resources available to local athletes.

Looking ahead, the GSA is already shifting its focus toward major international commitments.

With the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport committing to the continued development of these facilities, the association is positioning itself for a massive undertaking as Guyana prepares to host the Pan American Junior Championships in 2027.
