Persaud set the fastest time of the day (1:16.691s) on the second lap in the Group 4/Unlimited race to better compatriot Mark Vieira’s previous record of 1:17.527s, set by the Mazda RX-8 at the South Dakota Grand Prix last July.

He then topped the competition to close off the iconic November race meet in grand style, with thousands of fans cheering on the action.

Persaud praised his team for the success, highlighting that “we just run a reliable car consistently and that was the plan.”

“I’m just so happy that the last race came off so well, because you know a lot of people came out to see the big cars so I think it was good success, but it was Roger (Yuen), John and the guys really. I just show up and drive, so I was happy to be given a car that could finish all the laps, which is key now at South Dakota- having something that is reliable,” Persaud told the media.

The first Group 4 race was red-flagged at the completion of four of the eight scheduled laps, with several drivers encountering mechanical issues and having to dropped out.

When race officials signaled the drivers off for ‘unsafe track conditions’, Jamaican Doug Gore, in his KIA Rio, was leading, followed by Team CAMS’ Mohan Rangasammy in his Mazda RX-7, Persaud, and Lennard Samaroo of Team CAMS in his Mazda Miata.

Race officials awarded those positions to the respective drivers.

Trinidad’s Franklyn Boodram (Renault RS01) and Guyanese Gavin Gayadin (Mazda RX-7) came off after three and two laps respectively, while Vieira, Guyanese Andrew King (Mazda RX-7) and Mark Maloney (Mazda RX-3) of Barbados developed issues even before completing a lap, thereby abandoning their mission.

The second Group 4 race was also red-flagged on the first lap following an accident involving Gore and Guyanese Kevin Jeffrey (Mitsubishi Evo), forcing both competitors out of the final race, which was dominated by Persaud.

Cheered on by family members and staff, the ENet CEO put on a show in fading light at South Dakota, prevailing in a tight exchange with Vieira, who spun off on lap three, but came back to take a distant second.

Rangasammy, who was also making a spirited challenge for the top spot after starting on pole in the absence of Gore, veered off the track in the first lap. Samaroo took third, being the only other driver to complete the full course.

 

 

 

ahead at 10:00 hrs on Monday, November 06 where the government and opposition will unite to denounce Venezuela’s “provocative and unlawful” referendum.

The referendum is to be held a month from today in Venezuela where the government will seek the support of citizens in continuance of its claim of Guyana’s Essequibo region.

Guyana views the move as an affront to the ongoing juridical process currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

And so, a Motion will be moved by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd during the sitting on Monday.

The Motion will open a debate, with contributions from both sides of the House.

And then, a vote.

All 65 members of the National Assembly are expected to vote in support of the Motion which seeks to:

• Affirm the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana
• Reaffirms its recognition and acceptance of the 1899 Arbitral Award as a “full, perfect and final” settlement of the boundary between Guyana and Venezuela and Article IV (2) of the 1966 Geneva Agreement as giving the mandate to the United Nations Secretary-General to select the means of resolving the controversy
• Denounces as provocative, unlawful, void, and of no international legal effect, the purported referendum in Venezuela that is scheduled for December 3, 2023
• Supports the Government in its pursuit to ensure a peaceful and lawful resolution of the controversy before the International Court of Justice and rejects the proposal to return to any form of dialogue with Venezuela on the controversy outside of the process before the Court
• Supports Government’s formal approach for the urgent protection of the International Court of Justice, with the filing with the Court a Request for Provisional Measures for an Order preventing Venezuela from taking any action to seize, acquire or encroach upon, or assert or exercise sovereignty over, the Essequibo Region or any other part of Guyana’s national territory, pending the Court’s final determination of the validity of the Arbitral Award
• Calls for the deepening of engagements among all national stakeholders on issues relating to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, particularly within the context of the meetings of the bipartisan Ministerial Advisory Committee on the Guyana/Venezuela Controversy.
• Encourages the citizens of Guyana to remain fully engaged on developments surrounding the controversy
• Expresses its appreciation to the partners and friends of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana for their support and expressions of affirmation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana.

The Nicolas Maduro government intends to ask its citizens for the creation of a new state, which makes up the territory of Guyana that it claims.

The Guyana government has condemned what it sees as Venezuela’s expansionist ambitions and said the border controversy should be resolved in court as the case is before the International Court of Justice as dictated by the United Nations Secretary General as the means to settle the controversy.

Guyana has since approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking an injunction to prevent Venezuela from taking action through its provocative referendum over Guyana’s territory – Essequibo.

The borders of Guyana and Venezuela were determined by an arbitral tribunal on October 3rd, 1989, and Venezuela inherited 13,000 square kilometers of Guyana’s territory (then under British rule).

Virat Kohli equalled the record of fellow India great Sachin Tendulkar as he hit his 49th one-day international century in a dominant 243-run win for the hosts against South Africa in the World Cup.

His superb knock helped India post 326-5 from their 50 overs in Kolkata.

South Africa were then skittled out for just 89 in 27.1 overs.

It means India are assured of top spot after winning all eight of their group-stage matches.

South Africa, who have already secured a semi-final place, are second on 12 points, two points ahead of Australia in third.

Kohli put on 134 for the third wicket to anchor the India innings with Shreyas Iyer, who came to the crease in the 11th over with the score 92-2 following a typically explosive start by Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

Shreyas was eventually dismissed by Lungi Ngidi for 77 from 87 deliveries, before an energetic 22 from 14 balls from Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 29 from 15 saw the innings end with a flourish.

Their spinners backed up India’s powerful seam attack as they breezed through the South Africa batting line-up, with Jadeja the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-33.

With India and South Africa leading the way at the top of the group stage, this match was a potential dress rehearsal for the World Cup final in Ahmedabad later this month.

And the convincing nature of this win will do little to alter India’s status as heavy favourites to lift the trophy for a third time. (BBC)
