The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) have completed a comprehensive officiating training programme as part of a crucial preparation drive for the upcoming Inter Guiana Games (IGG).
The symposium at the National Racquet Centre focused on ensuring officials adhere to global standards ahead of the major tripartite games scheduled for December 5-7 in Guyana.
NSC’s Deputy Chair, Cristy Campbell, emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards, particularly in sensitive international events.
“Your role is significant because you must be aware of the officiating practices that align with World Athletics principles for fair play and ethics,” Campbell stated.
“We must be familiar with the principles of integrity in sport to avert actions that could discredit the quality of the games.”
She elaborated that “the Government will continue to support sport and work with national associations to improve in every capacity that could ultimately lead to better performances by our athletes locally and internationally.”
AAG President Sheryl Hermonstine welcomed the timely intervention, noting it was “well overdue” and would leave officials “better equipped for IGG.
The course covered a wide range of technical modules, including starts, throws, jumps, manual timekeeping, and track umpiring, alongside philosophical discussions on integrity and the modern meet manager system.
Thornton, Colorado, USA: The inauguration of the new cricket pitch and ground at the Thornton Sports Complex marks a significant milestone in the development of cricket within the region.
The event was officiated by renowned West Indian cricket legend and Hall of Famer Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who officially opened the facility on October 4, 2025.
This ground is dedicated to fostering youth and school cricket, particularly benefiting the Adams 12 Five Star Schools, including Thornton High School and its middle schools.
The cricket ground is notable for being the first in Thornton, Colorado to feature lighting, enabling evening and night matches and training sessions.
The facility’s opening was attended by distinguished guests, including Jan Kulmann, the Mayor of Thornton, Jatin Patel, a respected multi-sports coach and cricket Hall of Famer with lifetime achievement award, as well as officials from the City of Thornton and local schools.
The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony that celebrated the growth of cricket in the community.
During the ceremony, Mayor Jan Kulmann emphasised the importance of cricket as a unifying sport that connects families, neighbours and diverse cultures. She highlighted the role of cricket in fostering community spirit and youth development.
The presence of Chanderpaul served as an inspiration to aspiring young cricketers, and the event provided an opportunity for local student-athletes from Thornton Middle School and Thornton High School to showcase their talents.
The event also recognised the efforts of the Colorado Tennis Cricket League (CTCL), which spearheaded the project to expand cricket in local schools.
Manoj Gangwar, Anil Vijay from CTCL , Fareed Stanikzai and Charlene Fauls from School District, Vinod Murthy from DYCA key advocate and contributor to youth cricket development in Colorado, was acknowledged for his dedication.
The new facility is expected to support ongoing training and development programmes, including youth initiatives and school cricket activities.
Reflecting on the growth of cricket in Colorado, Jatin Patel recalled his initial visit in September 2017, when he was invited by Raymond Mascarenhas of the Colorado Cricket League to train local cricket coaches for youth cricket.
Since then, the sport has experienced significant progress, driven by dedicated individuals like Manoj Gangwar, who has played a vital role in establishing cricket grounds and nurturing young talent in the region.
Overall, the opening of this cricket ground signifies a promising future for cricket in Thornton and Colorado at large. It provides a vital infrastructure for training, competitions, and community engagement, fostering the sport’s growth and encouraging the next generation of cricketers.

Three sergeants and an officers were transferred as the investigation into the alleged ‘inappropriate conduct’ of officers at the Guyana Police Force Academy, Georgetown campus continues.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is currently investigating the allegations.
These incidents were recently reported to the Commissioner of Police, who directed that an investigation be conducted immediately. The completed case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecution on Monday.
“The investigation is complete, and the case file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution [on October 13, 2025] for advice. An officer and three sergeants have been transferred from the Academy,” the police said in a statement.
Several Academy staff members and recruits were interviewed and have since provided statements to the OPR investigators.
Two officers were transferred as the Guyana Police Force continues a further investigation into a bribery and extortion allegation at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.
According to the allegations, the two officers attached to the Force’s Narcotics Branch at the Airport, accepted money from a female passenger in exchange for allowing her to travel with frozen food.
According to reports, the incident occurred on September 27, 2025, and involved an inspector and a junior rank.
The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) conducted an initial investigation into the complaint and subsequently prepared a file, which was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
The DPP has since provided advice on the matter, and additional investigations are now being carried out. Both officers have been transferred from the CJIA to the Tactical Services Unit pending the outcome of the ongoing probe.

Wakapoa and Mainstay have been crowned champions of the Essequibo leg of the Republic Bank/One Guyana ‘B’ Division Volleyball tournament.
The day’s proceedings concluded with thrilling matches and outstanding performances from participating male and female teams across the region.
The competition, held among several villages, saw Wakapoa females and Mainstay males emerge victorious in their respective divisions.

In the opening round of the male competition, Wakapoa Seniors defeated Kabakaburi Seniors 25-14, 25-20; Capoey defeated Kabakaburi Secondary 25-8, 25-13; and Mainstay topped Kabakaburi Secondary 25-12, 25-14.
Semi-final action saw Mainstay defeating Kabakaburi Seniors 25-12, 25-20, and Wakapoa getting the better of Capoey 25-20, 25-11.
The final produced an intense showdown with Mainstay edging out Wakapoa in three-sets (25-20, 23-25, 15-8).
The final leg of the tournament will take place on November 1-2 from 09:00h on each day at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The national finals will feature top teams from Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Nine, and 10 competing for championship glory.

Guyana’s golfing warriors stood tall on foreign soil this weekend as Avinash Persaud led a triumphant campaign at the DSB Suriname Invitational 2025, capturing the overall title after two gruelling days of competition in Paramaribo.
His stellar victory was matched by a superb performance from Patanjilee Persaud, who claimed first place in the B Flight, underscoring Guyana’s dominance across divisions.

Under the blazing tropical sun and on a course that tested every facet of skill and endurance, Avinash Persaud delivered a masterful performance, winning the A Flight with a best Gross of 144, after posting rounds of 78 and 66 on Days One and Two respectively.
His efforts earned him a total of 70 Gross points, reaffirming his place among the Caribbean’s elite golfers. His win not only earned him the crown, but also set the tone for the upcoming Guyana Open later this month.
Reflecting on his performance, Persaud shared, “Winning this tournament is a joy to me because it was a Stableford event, and it’s hard to win off a single-digit handicap. But I am very happy for the win. Leading up to the Guyana Open, since I’m in good form, it should not be a problem playing that tournament.”
His calm confidence mirrored the determination seen throughout Team Guyana’s contingent.
In the B Flight, Patanjilee Persaud outplayed his opponents with a best Net of 128, after scoring 65 and 63 over the two days and amassing 82 total net points.
Chet Bowling followed closely in second with a total net of 133, posting 66 and 67 on Days One and Two respectively for 77 total net points, adding to Guyana’s medal tally.
Eureka Giddings turned in a consistent showing, finishing second in the F Flight with a total net of 135, scoring 65 and 70 over the two days and earning 75 total net points.
Meanwhile, Shanella London stood out in the women’s category, finishing third in the E Flight with a total net of 151 (net scores of 77 and 74) and 55 total net points.

She also captured Best Gross for females with a Gross score of 169 and 43 Gross points, and impressively claimed the Longest Drive titles for both Day 1 and Day 2, a testament to her growing reputation as one of Guyana’s top female golfers.
In the S Flight, Carlos Adams battled his way to third place with a Net of 143, after carding 77 and 66 over the two days to finish with 68 total net points.
Even those who did not make the podium proudly represented Guyana, showcasing discipline and heart on the course.

Junior Sinclair’s five-wicket haul and an explosive unbeaten 75 from Kevin Sinclair propelled Berbice to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over the Select XI in the Queensway Inter-County Super50 Cup at the Lusignan Community Centre Ground on Sunday.
The Select XI’s decision to bat first quickly backfired, as they were bundled out for just 139 in 37.3 overs, primarily due to Junior Sinclair’s probing off-spin.
Kevin Sinclair’s 63-ball knock made the target look threadbare and Berbice raced to the total in 29.1 overs.
The Select XI innings never truly got off the ground, with consistent pressure from the Berbice attack despite Kwesi Mickle, who struck a commendable 49.
The primary destructor was Junior Sinclair, who delivered a magnificent spell of control and spin.
He finished with a devastating return of 5 for 25 from his full 10 overs, tearing through the Select XI’s middle and lower order.
Clinton Pestano ably supported him, who claimed 2 for 18, and the all-round burst from Zeynul Ramsammy, who added 2 for 29.
Their combined efforts meant Select XI could not capitalise on any momentum, scraping only 139 before the final wicket fell in the 38th over.
The Berbice top order would always dictate the pursuit of 140, and Kevin Sinclair took control from the outset.
Known for his aggressive strokeplay, the opener combined caution with calculated risk.
While the Select XI managed to pick up three wickets—one each for Kwesi Mickle, Joshua Jones, and Nityanand Mathura—they could not stop the flow of runs from Sinclair’s bat.

Paru sur l’album Evolution en 2010, avec Cheri m geri, Kreyol La signe l’un des textes les plus lucides de la musique haïtienne récente sur la question de la rupture. Pas la rupture dramatique, pas celle qu’on pleure à grands sanglots, mais cette blessure plus sourde : celle d’un amour sans réciprocité, d’une passion qui s’éteint seule, sans fracas.
Le narrateur ne pleure plus, il ne s’accroche plus. Il déclare, presque avec fierté, qu’il a tourné la page. Mais derrière chaque mot, on sent encore la trace du combat intérieur : celui qu’on mène contre soi-même pour ne plus ressentir. Cheri m geri n’est pas la célébration d’une victoire sur l’amour meutri, c’est la mise en scène du moment où l’on essaie d’y croire. Dire « mwen geri » devient ici un acte performatif, une manière de se réécrire soi-même après la perte, comme si la parole pouvait devancer le cœur.
Kreyol La aborde avec justesse le paradoxe du mwen geri . Cette phrase qu’on répète pour s’en convaincre, alors que le cœur, lui, continue de saigner en silence. Le chanteur affirme qu’il n’aime plus, qu’il ne souffre plus, mais chaque note trahit un souvenir, chaque respiration garde la mémoire d’un attachement qu’on voudrait effacer. C’est tout l’art de la chanson : transformer la douleur en affirmation, non pas nier la peine, mais la reformuler pour reprendre le contrôle. Cette déclaration du deuil consommé, ici, ne décrit pas un état, c’est une tentative de renaissance.
La chanson évoque un amour déséquilibré : un homme qui s’attache à une femme indifférente, sous le regard moqueur de ses amis. Il a aimé seul, profondément, obstinément. Et le jour où il se dit qu’il n’aime plus, il ne célèbre pas une délivrance. Il constate simplement qu’il n’a plus mal. Ou du moins, c’est ce qu’il croit. Aurait-il confondu le silence du souffrant et la paix du coeur guérit ? L’auteur évoque une guérison sans éclat, presque discrète, mais sincère. Ce titre de la bande à Tjo Zenny est une reflexion sur la dignité après la dépendance, sur cette frontière floue entre l’oubli et la résilience. Car guérir, parfois, ce n’est pas cesser d’aimer : c’est cesser de vouloir être aimé.
Sur le plan musical, Kreyol La enveloppe ce texte d’une instrumentation chaude et fluide. Le rythme et la mélodie entrainent chacun sur la piste, sans se soucier des paroles. Comme si la mélodie venait consoler les mots eux-mêmes. Cette douceur contraste avec la gravité du propos, et c’est là toute la force du morceau : chanter la douleur sur le ton du soulagement. Cheri m geri est une chanson qui fait danser le chagrin sans jamais le travestir, un espace où la blessure trouve une forme de beauté.
Dans le répertoire haïtien, rares sont les chansons qui traitent de la guérison amoureuse avec autant de finesse. Pas comme une victoire, mais comme une question. Pas comme un cri, mais comme un murmure. Cette proposition est peut-être l’un des plus beaux textes de Kreyol La, un morceau qui touche parce qu’il ne prétend pas raconter la virilité : il montre simplement le geste fragile de celui qui essaie de sourire après la tempête. Mais, au final, n’est-ce pas nous, que nous aimons dans l’idée d’aimer l’autre ?
Darren Wade on Sunday confirmed that there was some collaboration between WIN and APNU in the 2025 General and Regional Elections.
“During the election period, I was asked at Congress Place [the headquarters of the People’s National Congress] by senior stakeholders to file legal proceedings on behalf of WIN.
“Before proceeding, I sought confirmation from our Leader [Aubrey Norton] as to whether he agreed with that suggestion, and he not only agreed but encouraged me to assist WIN, even though one or two other lawyers were not in agreement,” Wade, an attorney aligned to APNU, said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
WIN is the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party led by sanctioned businessman, Azruddin Mohamed. A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is a PNC-led coalition.
During the elections, People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) leaders said WIN and APNU were collaborating. However, both parties denied that collaboration.
According to Wade, he has been representing Azruddin and his father, Nazar. The attorney also revealed that he represents the WIN candidates whose bank accounts were closed because of their association with the sanctioned party leader.
The revelations from Wade on Sunday come after talks between WIN and APNU for electoral collaboration in the regional elections failed.
