President Mohamed Irfaan Ali has confirmed his government’s support in developing and installing several mini-pitches in Guyana next year as part of the FIFA Arena programme, following a phone conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Sunday.

Announced by the FIFA President during the International Summit on Sports for Sustainable Development in Paris in July 2024, FIFA Arena aims to establish at least 1,000 new mini-pitches globally by the time of the FIFA Congress in 2031. It is a response to the pledge to prioritise underserved communities and schools, particularly those in disadvantaged urban and rural areas, by providing safe, accessible spaces for children to play, learn, and grow – using football as a catalyst for inclusion, education, and positive change.

President Dr Irfaan Ali met today with the contractor, China Road & Bridge Corporation (CRBC); the consultant, Sheladia Associates Inc.; engineers; and a traffic management team working on the rehabilitation and expansion of the East Bank Public Road.

The President read the riot act to the contractor and consultant regarding the pace of the project and the manner in which traffic arrangements are complied with. He also highlighted to the police the disregard for traffic rules and road safety, especially by trucks.

As a result, the contractor and consultant will submit a revised work plan within 24 hours. Additionally, a number of measures were agreed upon, including the setting up of an integrated control room and the implementation of a traffic management drone system. The establishment of an early warning system and an emergency transport plan in collaboration with Coast Guard and the Marine section of the Guyana Police Force to help persons heading to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in cases of unforeseen circumstances will also be set up to help manage traffic and the work flow (Office of the President press release)

West Indies made it to the second new ball for the first time this year, they registered their highest partnership for the year – an unbroken 138 between John Campbell and Shai Hope,

Campbell became their first half-centurion of the series with a career-best 87, Hope scored his first half-century in 31 innings, but for all that good work they still needed 97 runs to make India bat again in Delhi.

Kuldeep Yadav conjured a fifth Test five-for on a docile pitch to allow India to enforce the follow-on, but the temptation to finish the match early only resulted in hard work for the bowlers: India have now taken four wickets in their last 75.2 overs.

India were not in immediate danger of falling behind in the Test, but they will question if they had been complacent in enforcing the follow-on: when you do so midway into the third day, having bowled 81.5 overs already, there must be an element of expecting the opposition to roll over.

India were then left riding two boats: trying to get the wicket but also preserving their bowlers, which meant Jasprit Bumrah didn’t bowl in the first 32 overs of the second innings.

Overall, though, eight wickets in a day on this Delhi pitch was not an ordinary effort. It was mainly down to Kuldeep, who overcame the lack of spite in the surface with work in the air and keeping the stumps in play.

Four of his five wickets were either bowled or lbw, exposing both edges with drift and subtle changes in the degree and direction of turn.

Kuldeep began with the off stump of Hope in the seventh over of the day. In the first Test, he beat Hope’s inside edge to bowl him, but this slow pitch needed something more. The drift from Kuldeep took the ball away from the original expected line, and then the ball didn’t turn as much as expected.

Pretty soon, Tevin Imlach was beaten on the inside edge by a rare delivery that turned sharply. Justin Greaves contributed to his own dismissal with an ungainly reverse-sweep, which he missed by some distance. Kuldeep was on target again.

At the other end, Bumrah first and then Mohammed Siraj had been looking to hit the front pad of the batters. Jomel Warrican was aware of that threat, but it cemented his feet, resulting in playing a full ball away from the body, playing it on to give a fast bowler a wicket for the first time in the match.

Now, at 175-8, began West Indies’ resistance. Khary Pierre and Anderson Phillip batted together for 16.5 overs, taking West Indies to lunch and beyond. Bumrah had to come back for another spell to beat Pierre on the outside edge with reverse swing.

Kuldeep had to work hard for his fifth wicket, including bowling with the new ball. He eventually got the fifth but not before the last wicket had batted nine overs together.

If there had been any doubts about enforcing the follow-on, they must have only grown with these two partnerships. Having still decided to continue bowling, India opened with Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja.

Bumrah, who had bowled eight overs already, would be the last bowler employed (discounting Yashasvi Jaiswal who was handed the final over of the day). The fields India used didn’t seem to suggest they believed there was enough in the pitch to produce wickets.

It still seemed to be going all wrong for West Indies again when they lost the first two wickets for just 35 runs. Siraj got Tagenarine Chanderpaul on the pull for the second time in the series.

Washington Sundar then produced the ball of the day, drifting it in from wide on the crease and then turning away to bowl Alick Athanaze, who has looked like West Indies’ best batter on this tour.

Campbell and Hope then began to frustrate India. Campbell, who was out to a freak catch that just stuck in the short leg fielder’s arms in the first innings, arguably deserved some of the luck he enjoyed against Washington, who kept defeating him with his drift. On two occasions, Campbell was hit on the pad before the bat, but on both occasions the umpire’s call on the impact saved him from the lbw.

With no zip in the pitch, the duo defended well and kept bringing out the big hit every now and then. Campbell showed particular intent against Jadeja and Kuldeep. The latter went for 36 in his first six overs.

It was clear West Indies didn’t want to let Kuldeep settle. Campbell swept him for a six and lofted him down the ground for a four in his first over to bring up his fifty.

Hope relied more on his touch play, the kind we are used to in ODIs, although he did get going with a slog-swept six off Washington. Errors in length began to creep in soon, fielding grew lethargic with bowlers misfielding off their own bowling, and India even conceded a no-ball for having too many fielders behind square on the leg side.

Four new government software applications (apps) will be launched soon to make service delivery more efficient and transparent, according to President Dr Irfaan Ali.

The Guyanese Head of State spoke about these plans on Saturday at the opening of the TOTALTEC-owned Soma Hotel in Houston, Greater Georgetown. These ventures are part of a wider government thrust to digitise services nationally.

“In another six weeks, we will be meeting with the private sector and launching four government apps to allow you to conduct business in a transparent manner,” President Ali said.

Dr. Ali said his government is embracing technology to hold itself more accountable. That means workers and officials will be monitored and service delivery should, overall, improve.

Last month, President Ali stated that his government is pursuing an ambitious national digitisation programme driven by a strategic focus on digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), cross-agency collaboration, and the integration of ICT systems, which will see most government services fully digitised before the end of the second quarter in 2026.

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is deeply concerned by continued recurrences of shipping delays from Trinidad as a result of port congestion—an issue which has over the  years resulted in impediments to regional trade and hindrances to local supply chains.

Members of the  GCCI—particularly those within the manufacturing, trade, retail and construction sectors—have  reported delays in receiving shipments of raw materials, as well as increased demurrage and storage costs,  and disruptions to production and project timelines. This situation has not only disrupted operations but  placed undue pressure on cashflow.  

The Chamber is urging Guyanese and Trinidadian authorities, and port operators to address this issue immediately through strategic coordination. The GCCI underscores the critical need to prioritise essential  cargo and restore efficient shipping operations. The Chamber recommends the facilitation of alternative  routing and expedited clearance to cushion the impact on the local business landscape and stands ready  to work with regional partners and the private sector to implement practical remedial solutions. 

These actions are necessary as we reflect on the dire implications of such delays last December that resulted in supply chain disruptions and increased costs for consumers. We cannot afford a supply-chain  paralysis ahead of the holiday season—swift action will limit economic harm to the business community  and consumers. Furthermore, it is evident that there is a pressing need for the authorities in Trinidad to  review the procedures and operations of their port facilities to ensure surety of regional trade and end  repeated disruptions. Trade and stability cannot be held hostage by inefficiency.

British Superbike rider Dan Linfoot has officially confirmed his return to Guyana for the Caribbean Clash of Champions on November 2 at the South Dakota Circuit, and this time, he will not be alone.

Joining him will be fellow British rider Gregg Black, as both will represent Team GuyAmerica in the Superbike class, adding an international edge to the event’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

Linfoot, who made history in 2024 with a record-breaking 1:15.534 lap, returns with unfinished business to push the limits of speed once more.

This year, he will be riding a locally built 1000cc superbike from Two Wheel Performance in a remarkable exhibition lap record run, where he will attempt to reset the overall South Dakota Circuit record.

The machine, built by former racer and performance engineer Maurice Menezes, showcases the growing technical capabilities of Guyana’s motorsport industry.

His teammate Black brings his own world-class experience as a World Endurance Champion with the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT). Together, Linfoot and Black form the core of Team GuyAmerica, a collaboration that bridges British expertise with Guyanese innovation, highlighting Guyana’s rise on the international motorsport stage.

They will line up against top local riders, including Matthew Vieira, Nicholas Boodram and Kevin Persaud, ensuring fierce competition and spectacular action for fans.

On November 2, all eyes will be on the South Dakota Circuit as Linfoot takes to the track aboard the Two Wheel Performance superbike in a bid to break his own record, while Black joins the grid for high-speed Superbike action in what promises to be an unforgettable Caribbean Clash of Champions.

A responsible fifty from opener and captain Matthew Nandu and a four-wicket haul from West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Jonathan Van Lange spurred defending champions Demerara to a solid 50-run win over Essequibo in Game One of the Queensway Security Service Inc. Senior Super50 Inter-County Cup on Saturday at the Joe Jagmohan Ground in Hampton Court, Essequibo.

Batting first, Demerara posted 229 all out from 45.2 overs, anchored by a composed 73 from Player-of-the-Match Nandu, who struck seven boundaries in his 102-ball innings.

Support for Nandu came from his Guyana Harpy Eagles teammate Raymond Perez (41 off 50 balls; 3x4s, 1×6) and opener Ushardeva Balgobin (40 off 51 balls; 7x4s), both providing crucial top-order partnerships that guided Demerara beyond the 200-run mark.

Nandu and Balgobin set Demerara on a solid foundation with an opening stand of 67 in 14.4 overs, before Nandu and Perez put on 73 for the second wicket.

At 140-1 in the 29th over, Demerara appeared on course for a far larger total than they eventually posted, but the Essequibians made regular breakthroughs in the second half of the innings to stymie the progress of the visitors.

Essequibo’s bowling effort was led by Thaddeus Lovell, who claimed 4-43 from seven overs, while the experienced pacer Ronsford Beaton took 2-29 from 7.2 overs.

Left-arm spinner Ricardo Adams bowled a tidy spell to finish with 2-39 from his 10 overs, and Keemo Paul added 1-40 from eight overs.

In reply, Essequibo struggled to build partnerships and were dismissed for 179 in 37.3 overs, after being in a position of relative strength at 70-2 in the 12th over.

Paul top-scored with 30 from 32 balls, including two sixes, opener Kevon Boodie raced to 29 off 19 (7x4s), Antony Adams made 25, Lovell 24 and Myheim Khan an unbeaten 22.

Skipper Kemol Savory and Guyana Amazon Warriors batting hero Quentin Sampson, on whom much was expected, fell for 14 and a first-ball duck respectively.

Medium-pacer Van Lange dented the run-chase with three wickets in the 13th over, reducing Essequibo from 71-3 to 72-6, as he removed Kanhaiya Ramkarran for 12, and Sampson and Ricardo Adams, both without scoring.

He finished with 4-35 from eight overs, supported by off-spinner Richie Looknauth with 3-23 from seven overs. Left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd (1-33 from 10 overs) and seamer Ronaldo Ali Mohamed (1-49 from seven overs) also chipped in to complete a disciplined bowling effort.

Competitors across the junior and senior categories battled fiercely in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, producing thrilling matches and standout performances.

In the Women’s Singles semi-final, Priyanna Ramdhani bested Ashley Khalil 21-12, 21-7 to secure a spot in the Women’s final, where she will meet Mishka Beharry who bested Leshaunte Berkley 21-14, 21-10.

On the Men’s side, Akili Haynes defeated Frank Waddell 21-3, 16-21, 21-16 to advance to the final, where he will face Tyrese Jeffrey, who defeated Nkosi Beaton 21-17, 21-15.

The junior divisions highlighted a promising generation of rising talent, with players demonstrating remarkable skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The new SOMA hotel and restaurant in Houston, Greater Georgetown, opened on Saturday, creating between 60 to 100 direct and indirect jobs and boosting Guyana’s hospitality sector.

SOMA is a venture by TOTALTEC, a Guyanese-owned company in the oil and gas and logistics sectors.

“When we first imagined SOMA, we wanted to create more than a hotel or restaurant. We wanted to create a place of purpose,” TOTALTEC’s Chief Executive Officer Lars Mangal said.

This first phase of SOMA will create 60 to 100 direct and indirect jobs for Guyanese men and women, across hotel operations, food and beverage services, and maintenance. The project also supports a network of local suppliers and service providers, aligning with Guyana’s local content goals and national workforce development priorities.

As the project scales, TOTALTEC plans to expand SOMA across other key regions of development in Guyana — offering affordable, high-quality accommodation and dining experiences that support business travelers, professionals, and industrial clients throughout the country.

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali hailed the investment and noted that such private-led ventures bode well for the country. Dr. Ali said his administration is focused on transforming Guyana into a well-diversified economy, and the tourism and hospitality sector will help with this goal.
