Police in East Berbice are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 01:40 hrs Sunday on the No. 11 Public Road, which claimed the lives of a motorcyclist and his pillion rider.

The crash involved motor car HC 4710, driven by 48-year-old Madray Ramsammy of Lancaster Village, Corentyne, and motorcycle CP 8880, owned and ridden by 29-year-old Kris Ramphal of Lot 97 Fyrish Village, Corentyne. His pillion rider has been identified as 18-year-old Malcolm Pirtan of Lot 135 Fyrish Village.

According to police, enquiries revealed that Ramsammy was driving east along the northern drive lane when he encountered the motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction. It is alleged that the motorcycle was being ridden at a fast rate, without a headlight, and that both Ramphal and Pirtan were not wearing safety helmets.

Ramsammy told investigators that the motorcycle was in his lane, and despite swerving right in an attempt to avoid a collision, the motorcycle slammed into the left front side of his car on the northern drive lane.

The impact caused both Ramphal and Pirtan to be flung onto the northern side of the roadway, where they sustained severe injuries. Public-spirited citizens rushed them to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, but doctors pronounced both men dead on arrival. Their bodies are now at the Arokium Funeral Home, awaiting post-mortem examinations.

Police ranks who responded to the scene arrested Ramsammy, who was taken into custody at the Central Police Station as investigations continue.

A domestic dispute turned deadly at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, on Sunday morning when a man fatally chopped his reputed wife before taking his own life by ingesting poison.

The deceased have been identified as Alisha “Tito” Narine, 36, a domestic worker and vendor of Plot Z, Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, and her partner of 15 years, Ram Singh, called “Singh,” of Tain Settlement, Corentyne. The couple shared two children and had reportedly been experiencing ongoing domestic problems that had already reached the courts.

Police reported that between 09:30 and 10:00 hrs, Narine was seated under a coconut tree in the Vishal Singh Sawmill compound, where the couple lived. During a WhatsApp video call with her cousin, Taramattie “Vanessa” Joseph, who resides in the United States, Singh was seen approaching from behind with a cutlass. He seized Narine’s phone and told Joseph, “Today, today I will murder her,” before ending the call.

Shortly after, Narine’s body was discovered behind a heap of stones in the sawmill compound, clad in blue short pants, a striped shirt and a yellow T-shirt. Police said she sustained multiple chop wounds, including a nearly severed right foot below the knee, injuries to her right shoulder, and deep wounds to her left hand.

Her daughter, 18-year-old Felisha Narine, said she was alerted by a neighbour that Singh was attacking her mother. When she arrived at the scene, she found her mother lying motionless in a pool of blood. Fighting back tears, she told reporters:
“I feel glad that he passed away because he hurt she and he hurt me. I didn’t want to see my mother like that… me mother is the only body I get and love. It really hurt me that she passed away.”

Police launched a search and found Singh about 360 feet away in a sideline trench under a tree. He had ingested a poisonous substance. Singh was arrested, cautioned, and taken under police guard to the No. 75 Village Regional Hospital, where he admitted to consuming the poison.

Despite receiving treatment, Singh succumbed at around 14:30 hrs while hospitalised.

The bodies of both Singh and Narine were removed to the Skeldon Public Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted in the coming days.

Investigations are ongoing.

A domestic worker was brutally chopped to death by her reputed husband on Sunday morning.

The victim, Alisha Narine, 36, from Crabwood Creek, Corentyne Berbice, lost her life in the shocking and sudden act of violence.

Reports indicate that around 9:50 hrs, Alisha and her reputed husband, Ram Singh, known as “Singh,” from Tain/Jones Settlement, engaged in a heated argument.

Shortly thereafter, Alisha’s lifeless body was discovered in the yard, bearing multiple chop wounds.

The police were promptly notified of the incident, and the police swiftly arrested Singh. He is currently in custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Driver Ramsammy told investigators that the motorcycle, which allegedly had no headlight, veered into his lane. He said he attempted to swerve right to avoid the crash, but the motorcycle struck the left front portion of his vehicle, resulting in a devastating impact.

Following the collision, both Ramphal and Pirtan were thrown onto the northern side of the road and sustained severe injuries. Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist and transported the injured men to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by the attending physician.

Their bodies have since been transferred to the Arokium Funeral Home, where post-mortem examinations are pending.

Ramsammy was arrested at the scene and taken into custody at the Central Police Station, where he remains as investigations continue.

India’s cricketers refused to shake hands with Pakistan after their first meeting since the conflict between the two nations earlier this year, Pakistan coach Mike Hesson has claimed.

India cruised to a seven-wicket victory at the Asia Cup in Dubai, after which captain Suryakumar Yadav and batting partner Shivam Dube immediately left the field rather than shaking hands in the middle, as is the norm.

Afterwards, Pakistan’s players appeared to walk towards India’s dugout when they left the field but the India players had already returned to the dressing room.

There was also no handshake between Suryakumar and Pakistan captain Salman Agha at the toss.

“Obviously, we were ready to shake hands at the end of the game,” New Zealander Hesson said.

“We were disappointed that our opposition didn’t do that.”

At the post-match presentation, Suryakumar described the win as a “perfect return gift to India”.

After his final question, he added: “We stand by with the victims and families of the terror attack and express our solidarity.

“We want to dedicate today’s win to all of our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery.”

No Pakistan players spoke at the presentation. Hesson later said Agha’s decision not do so was a “flow on” from India not shaking hands.

“We sort of went over there to shake hands and they were already going to the changing room,” Hesson said.

“That was a disappointing way for the match to finish. In a match that we were disappointed in the way we played, but certainly we were willing to go and shake hands.”

What is the background?

India and Pakistan engaged in a four-day military conflict in April following a deadly militant attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack – which Pakistan denied – and then launched air strikes inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with Pakistan firing missiles back.

It was the worst military confrontation between the neighbouring countries in decades, with dozens of people killed.

The countries already did not play each other in cricket other than at global events. There were calls for the Asia Cup to be cancelled or the match boycotted, but it went ahead.

“The government and the BCCI [Board of Control for Cricket in India], we were aligned,” Suryakumar said. “We took a call and we came here just to play the game. We gave the proper reply.”

India and Pakistan could yet meet again in this Asia Cup should both sides progress to the latter stages.

The previous meeting between the sides at the Champions Trophy in February was held in Dubai because India refused to travel to Pakistan – the tournament’s hosts.

In June, it was announced Sri Lanka will host Pakistan’s matches at the Women’s World Cup, which begins later this month.

That tournament was originally supposed to be held entirely in India but the schedule was changed now neither country will travel to the other for an International Cricket Council event. (BBC)

We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), the fledgling political force led by sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, has reportedly named its 16-member parliamentary team, setting the stage for its role as the official opposition in the 13th Parliament.

The list, circulated on Saturday as President Irfaan Ali swore in his 25 ministers to his Cabinet, was not released through WIN’s official channels but instead surfaced on social media — shared by WIN’s General Secretary Odessa Primus and ANUG Chairman Mark France.

Yet, in a twist that raises questions about the young party’s internal dynamics, France’s name is notably absent from the proposed slate.

Dr. Mark France, who in November 2024 was elected Chairman of A New and United Guyana (ANUG), had been a pivotal figure in ANUG’s decision to join forces with WIN for the 2025 elections. As head of ANUG, he championed transparency, accountability and constitutional reform, insisting that WIN’s rise was an opportunity to break the cycle of ethnic politics.

Instead, the party’s parliamentary bench will likely be occupied by a mixture of veteran MPs, defectors from APNU-AFC, and newcomers with thin public records.

Reacting to the news, France congratulated those reportedly selected but delivered a pointed message via Facebook: “You bear a huge responsibility to your supporters and Guyana at large. Do not let my people down. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE.”

At the top of the list is Mohamed himself, who confirmed he will serve as Leader of the Opposition. His position cements WIN’s second-place finish but his leadership is shadowed by ongoing U.S. Treasury sanctions and corruption allegations that he has repeatedly denied.

The optics of a sanctioned businessman becoming Opposition Leader have not gone unnoticed, both at home and abroad, and it places scrutiny on how Parliament and international partners will engage with WIN.

Among the most recognisable names on the proposed parliamentary slate are former APNU-AFC ministers and MPs:

• Dawn Hastings-Williams, ex-Minister of State and a respected Indigenous leader from Region Seven;
• Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, once Minister of Public Service, now seen as one of WIN’s senior frontliners running as Azruddin’s Prime Ministerial Candidate; and
• Natasha Singh-Lewis, another APNU defector who adds parliamentary experience to WIN’s bench.

These high-profile crossovers have given WIN credibility, but they also fuel criticism that Mohamed’s party is less about new politics and more a vehicle for recycling seasoned opposition figures.

Odessa Primus, a comedian-turned-General Secretary, will likely also secure a parliamentary spot. Her transition from entertainment to politics has been colourful, marked by fiery exchanges on the campaign trail. For supporters, her inclusion symbolises a people’s movement. For critics, it blurs the line between politics and performance.

Beyond the heavyweights, WIN’s proposed slate features a number of other figures — from sugar industry executive Vishnu Panday to dentist Dr. Ryan Richards, activist Gobin Harbhajan, and several regional representatives such as Beverly Cornelius and Deon LaCruz. Many have slim public records.

Duarte Hetsberger, once the personal assistant to former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, is now a key WIN organizer and will likely be heading to Parliament. Although implicated in investigations surrounding the deletion of GECOM computer data, he resurfaced to lead WIN’s nomination day exercise.

The 16-member list reflects both opportunity and contradiction. On one hand, WIN has drawn in experienced politicians and fresh voices, riding the wave of 109,066 votes cast for a message of change. On the other hand, the absence of Mark France — the face of ANUG’s alliance — raises questions.

This “power team,” as Primus labelled it online, will have to prove that it can become a credible counterweight to government even as some expect it to collapse into personality politics.

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 15:20 hrs on Saturday along Charity New Road, Essequibo Coast, which claimed the life of a 27-year-old motorcyclist and left two others hospitalised.

Dead is Daniel Gray, a resident of Somerset and Berks, Essequibo Coast. He was riding motorcycle #CP 1974 at the time of the crash.

The accident also involved another motorcycle, #CP 9109, driven by 31-year-old Alex Jaigopaul of Essequibo Coast, and motor car #PAC 697, driven by 24-year-old Patrick Murray, a Pastor from Charity.

According to investigators, all three vehicles were travelling east along the northern lane, with the car in front and the two motorcycles following side by side. Murray told police he had indicated to make a right turn into a Chinese supermarket when the motorcycles collided with the right side of his vehicle.

The impact flung both riders into the air, causing them to land on the parapet of the supermarket.

They were rushed, along with Murray, to the Oscar Joseph Charity Cottage Hospital, where they were examined by Dr. Mahase. Gray was pronounced dead on arrival.

Jaigopaul was admitted with multiple fractures to his left foot, while Murray sustained facial injuries. Both were later transferred to the Lima Regional Hospital for further treatment.

Police said investigations are ongoing.

Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle has confirmed the handing over of the site where commencement of construction of a boxing gym at Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, is scheduled to start shortly.

The site was handed over on Thursday last.

The project, which carries a price tag of just over G$47 million, is being executed by A. Alli Construction Company.

It was first announced earlier this year by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, and according to Ninvalle, the facility should be completed within six months.

“This is another promise delivered by the Government of Guyana, and particularly by President Ali, who continues to show his commitment to the development of sport across the country,” Ninvalle said in a release.

Ninvalle, who also serves as President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), stressed the significance of the facility for Berbice, a region that has steadily become a hotbed for local boxing talent.

“The Angoy’s Avenue gym will be the third of its kind in Berbice, joining the New Amsterdam Boxing Academy and the Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym,” Ninvalle noted.

“In recent years, most of our up-and-coming fighters have hailed from Berbice. This includes Caribbean champion Terron Wintz, who has already made his mark on the international stage.”

The Director of Sport believes the new facility will not only provide a structured environment for young fighters but also broaden the base of the sport nationwide.

“This gym doesn’t just add depth to boxing in Berbice, it strengthens boxing across Guyana,” he explained.

“More young people will now have access to proper facilities, and with that comes the opportunity to pursue the sport seriously.”

Ninvalle also expressed gratitude to President Ali for his continued investment in sports infrastructure.

“The President understands the importance of sporting facilities and the vital role they play in developing athletes. His support is invaluable, and this project is a clear indication of his vision for sports in Guyana,” he added.

Once completed, the Angoy’s Avenue boxing gym is expected to further cement Berbice’s reputation as a cradle of boxing talent, while giving the next generation of fighters the tools to chase greatness.

The fourth game of the Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) saw Guyana Amazon Warriors beat Trinbago Knight Riders by five wickets with seven balls remaining, a result which sees them qualify for the 2025 final where they will meet Barbados Royals.

The result sees the Knight Riders rooted to the bottom of the table with a third defeat in a row, whilst the Warriors go level on points with Barbados Royals, albeit having played one more match.

It was a dominant performance from Player-of-the-Match, Stafanie Taylor who picked up the wicket of Jess Jonassen with the ball and then made a patient 39 off 44 balls with the bat to break the back of the run chase.

The Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bat first in Providence Stadium, they lost regular wickets as Molly Penfold picked up 4-17 off her four overs to combine wicket-taking nous along with frugal economy.

Jonassen and Dottin provided the resistance for Knight Riders with 51 and 31 respectively. A maiden WCPL fifty for Jess Jonassen was much needed, but a total of 123-7 always felt a little light.

And so it proved.

Despite losing the in-form Realeanna Grimmond caught and bowled to Deandra Dottin early on, fellow opener Amy Hunter stepped up with 27 off 31 and Taylor’s runs proved crucial in getting the Warriors within sight before she fell to Shikha Pandey with just a handful more needed.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the Knight Riders who will look to secure a consolation victory in their final match against the Royals on Tuesday (September 16), while the Warriors will meet Royals in a dress rehearsal for the final on Sunday (September 14) at the same venue, from 14:00h. Guyana has lost one of its most distinguished diplomats with the passing of Ambassador Elisabeth Harper, a career diplomat who served in several senior positions, including as Guyana’s Ambassador to CARICOM and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement on Saturday, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said he received the news of Harper’s passing with “extreme sadness,” describing her as “one of Guyana’s most outstanding citizens” whose distinguished career was marked by excellence, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to advancing the nation’s interests.

Ambassador Harper, who, prior to her passing, was serving as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also held the post of Director General of the Ministry during her decades-long career. President Ali said she was a knowledgeable diplomat who “enriched every sphere of the Ministry’s work” and represented Guyana with dignity as its Ambassador to CARICOM.

He remembered Harper not only for her professional brilliance but also for her warmth and engaging personality, noting her exceptional organisational skills and ability to inspire those around her.

“Guyana has truly lost an outstanding citizen, and the foreign service has lost one of its finest ever,” President Ali said.

Beyond her public service, Harper also made her mark in national politics, serving as the prime ministerial candidate alongside former President Donald Ramotar in the 2015 General and Regional Elections.

President Ali expressed his deepest condolences to Harper’s family and loved ones, describing her passing as a monumental loss but assuring that her service will continue to inspire generations to come.
