Detectives in Regional Division Three are investigating the murder of 30-year-old Omar Nazareth Martinez Rodriguez, a Venezuelan national and construction worker who resided at 61 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.

The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, June 14, at approximately 19:40 hrs in the vicinity of the Panda Supermarket, located on the Goed Fortuin Public Road.

According to police reports, Rodriguez was reportedly attacked, beaten, and fatally stabbed by three male suspects—also believed to be Venezuelan nationals.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Rodriguez was in a taxi, returning home, when the suspects—riding a motorcycle—intercepted the vehicle near the Demerara Harbour Bridge roundabout. Two of the suspects reportedly dismounted the motorcycle, opened the car door, and began assaulting Rodriguez inside the vehicle.

The driver of the motorcar managed to speed away from the scene, with one of the attackers still inside. He eventually stopped at Goed Fortuin, where he forcibly removed the suspect from Rodriguez and locked the injured man inside the vehicle for his safety.

The driver told investigators he entered the nearby Panda Supermarket. Upon exiting shortly after, he saw Rodriguez running toward the entrance of the supermarket.

A 29-year-old security guard on duty at the supermarket reported that he witnessed Rodriguez being chased by three identifiable men. The assailants caught up with him and continued to beat him. One of the suspects, who was armed with a knife, reportedly stabbed Rodriguez multiple times before all three attackers fled the scene.

Upon examination, the victim’s body bore stab wounds and injuries to the right hand, right foot, neck, and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his remains have since been taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is pending.

Following swift police action based on intelligence received, ranks in Regional Division #3 apprehended two of the suspects at La Grange. Both individuals are currently in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward.

Former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica took victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a privately entered Ferrari.

The number 83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P, also driven by China’s Yifei Ye and Britain’s Phil Hanson, took the chequered flag 14.084 seconds ahead of the number six Porsche 963 of France Kevin Estre.

Pole Kubica, once considered one of the world’s best F1 drivers as part of a group of young drivers which included Lewis Hamilton, won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix for BMW-Sauber.

But three years later, as an established F1 driver for Renault, Kubica suffered life-changing injuries in a rallying crash which left him with a partially severed right arm and multiple fractures.

He returned to F1 with Williams in 2019 as team-mate to George Russell, scoring one point that season, and then drove two races for Alfa Romeo in 2021.

At Le Mans, the works number 51 Ferrari 499P driven by Antonio Giovinazzi took third place, with the sister 50 car driven by Antonio Fuoco fourth.

Both factory Ferraris, who had been competing for the victory until the final hour, were nursing problems in the final stages.

It is the third victory in a row at Le Mans for the 499P, which won in the top class for the first time in 50 years in 2023 – the 100th anniversary of the famous race.

Kubica, 40, who drove a long final stint, said over team radio: “It’s been a long 24 hours but an enjoyable one – grazie mille, grazie a tutti.”

“Winning Le Mans is special,” he added later to TNT Sports. “It’s been a demanding week – we made everything possible. We kept our heads down when we had to push, and when not we took care of the tyres.

“I’m happy for myself, my team-mates, AF Corse and Ferrari winning three times in row. A better scenario, we could not have.”

The sell-out race, which sees around 300,000 fans gather in north-west France, was a soporific event in 2025, with fewer incidents and accidents between the 62 cars which began the race than usual.

As the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) continues its unprecedented infrastructure development programme, Region Ten is set to benefit from a further $10 billion in community roads.

Speaking to close to 700 small contractors at the Watooka Guest House on Friday, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo underscored the impact this level of investment will have on community development and job creation in the region.

This initiative is being rolled out across the country, with every region benefiting. Since its return to office in 2020, the PPP/C administration has built thousands of community roads across the country.

Later, the Vice President engaged over 1,000 young people from the region. He encouraged them to take advantage of the many opportunities for empowerment that are available, such as the GOAL Scholarship Programme.

The Vice President also spoke about the government’s investments in health, education, and housing (including the provision of thousands of houselots), its fulfillment of manifesto promises, and plans for the next five years.

There were also lively, interactive exchanges during which he addressed issues raised by those in attendance. He took the opportunity to meet with several community groups.

The Vice President, who is also the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, also met with Party officials and activists from Region Ten.

A man was found dead in a drain at Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Parsram Shivpersaud, 52, was an unemployed resident of Lot 15 Adelphi Settlement, East Canje, Berbice.

Known for his heavy alcohol consumption, Shivpersaud was last seen alive at his sister’s home.

The News Room understands that on Friday, June 13, at approximately 19:20 hrs, he was seen sitting on the railing of the bridge in front of his sister’s house, smoking a cigarette.

The following morning, around 10:00 hrs, on Saturday, Shivpersaud was discovered face down in front of his sister’s residence by his brother-in-law.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shivpersaud’s death.

Defending champions Cropper Primary are still in the hunt to retain their title in the Berbice zone of the Future Warriors Tapeball Tournament for Primary Schools.

Cropper will face Tain Primary in the second semi-final while Betsy Ground Primary battles New Market Primary in the first semi-final today at the Albion Sports Complex.

 In their quarter-final fixture, Cropper posted 102-3 from their allotted eight overs, led by Jayden Gardner (23), Nehad Khan (23), and Tejpaul Persaud (23).

In response, Massiah Primary reached 96-2 despite a valiant effort by Poonish Harry, who made 62 from 28 balls.

For Betsy Primary, they chase Fyrish’s target of 65 in 6.4 overs with a top score of 24 by opener Kenny Ishmile.

Massiah reached 64-9 with Aryan Goberdan making 19, but a team effort with the ball saw Kenny Ishmile (2-9) and Ravi Rameshant (2-10) lead the wickets tally.

More so, Tain’s 96-4 was out of the reach of Rose Hall Town Primary, who responded with 75-5.

Nickell Kempadoo (26*) and Keran Bridgemohan (25) led Tain to their competitive total.

Jarrel Grant (16), Ezron Lambert (11), and Eion Dhanpat (10) gave Rose Hall a fighting chance of victory.

The other quarter-final was a low-scoring affair as Skeldon posted 21-8, restricted by tight bowling from New Market Primary, who then reached their target in 3.2 overs.

The organisers are providing bats, balls, and transportation free of charge to all participating schools, along with various meals and refreshments throughout the playing days, thereby removing barriers to participation.

The winning teams from each zone will be gifted a gear bag filled with tapeball cricket equipment.

Crucially, they will also secure a coveted spot in the upcoming ‘Champions of Champions’ tournament.

The ultimate winner of this champions’ playoff will gain an exclusive opportunity to be part of activities for ExxonMobil Guyana/Guyana Amazon Warriors during the home leg of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in September, offering an unparalleled glimpse into professional cricket.

Furthermore, the Most Valuable Player from each of the three zones in June is expected to be part of the activities for the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League, which runs from July 10-18.

President Dr Irfaan Ali at the weekend held bilateral discussions with the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in Brasília. The talks focused on advancing infrastructure projects and strengthening international mobilisation efforts around biodiversity conservation and forest protection, particularly in preparation for COP30.

President Ali is in the Brazilian capital for the Brazil–Caribbean Summit 2025, where he and fellow CARICOM Heads of Government are engaging with Brazilian authorities on areas of mutual interest and cooperation.

The government’s drive to include citizens in the rapidly growing oil and gas sector is beginning to yield results. Thanks in large part to the administration’s local content policy and support from the private sector, about 3,000 Guyanese have now received specialized training in the industry.

And nearly all of them, an impressive 99 per cent, have been able to find jobs.

Guyanese and participants from across the Caribbean will receive cutting-edge training in offshore safety, navigation, and subsea technology, allowing them to operate in dynamic career fields

The success is being driven by 3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence, located in Lusignan on the East Cost of Demerara. The centre is a joint venture between Guyana’s Orinduik Development Incorporated, Windsor Technologies, and 3t EnerMech.It is the first local institution accredited to deliver internationally recognized OPITO-certified training for oil and gas workers.

Orinduik Chairman Harrychand Tulsi said the results are transforming lives. He estimates that if each trained individual earns just US$3,000 more per month than before, the total boost to the economy is estimated to be around US$9 million every month.

The training centre features hands-on facilities, including a welding shop, lifting and rigging stations, a technology suite, and even a 14-foot deep survival pool for offshore training.

She said, “It [the programme] is excellent,” adding that it saves and allows Guyanese to excel in careers that were not possible in the past.

To second facility, Orinduik Marine Services (OMS), has just launched to provide training in offshore navigation, safety and subsea technologies. It aims to serve both Guyanese and other Caribbean nationals, equipping them for high-demand roles in the industry.

These efforts are part of a broader national strategy under the Local Content Act of 2021, which requires oil and gas operators to prioritize the development of local talent.

Land clearance works have already commenced on 95 acres of land at the housing development at Tracts A and B, Four Miles at Mahdia in Region Eight.

This housing development, the first of its kind in the region, offers over 300 residential house lots.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, disclosed this information at a community engagement at Mahdia Township on Wednesday.

She explained that six contractors are carrying out the infrastructural works. Approximately $493 million is being invested in the first phase, which includes road and drainage networks that will help improve accessibility.

Works at the scheme are set to be completed in October, allowing allottees to start construction on their dream homes.

Minister Rodrigues also visited the housing scheme and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the area.

“The area that we have earmarked for the housing area is completely free from encumbrances,” she assured the residents.

Addressing the region’s water sector, Minister Rodrigues assured the residents that the government is actively working to increase water access and quality across the region.

With increased investments over the years, Region Eight currently has over 90 per cent access to water.

In response to concerns raised about inadequate access to water, Minister Rodrigues tasked the GWI team to distribute the water schedule to every house in Seven Miles and Pepper Hill. These residents are currently being served by the water system at Mahdia Central.

Minister Rodrigues said that a contract was recently awarded to drill a new well next to the solar farm at Mahdia. This, she emphasised, will significantly increase water productivity across Mahdia.

Regional Executive Officer, Peter Ramotar, Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Shawn Britton, Deputy Mayor of Mahdia, Akita John, Representative from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Orlando Shuman, Senior Engineer at Guyana Water Incorporated, Khemraj Persaud and other engineers from GWI and the Central Housing and Planning Authority were also at the meeting.
