Thousands made up a ‘tsunami of red’ Sunday at the Kitty Market Square as the PPP launched its re-election campaign, with General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo saying it was the biggest crowd ever for political rallies.

Responding to comparisons between the attendance at the PPP/C campaign launch and that of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Monday, July 7, Dr. Jagdeo said “if they had a wave, then this is a tsunami, if they had a sea, then this is a universe of red.”

Referring to photos, posts and other ongoing campaigns by political parties on social media, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted that elections are not won on the internet but rather through direct engagement with the voters.

“The internet doesn’t vote, people do, and we have the numbers here,” he noted.

He added that the PPP/C has grown significantly over the past five years due to the fulfillment of its promises made ahead of the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

He added that his party does not have to explain its impact on the population since people are able to feel this in the reduction of taxes, improvements in healthcare and education, reduction in cost of electricity and water, access to housing and more done over the last five years.

“Those who supported the PPP and voted for us in 2020 must stand here with a great sense of pride and joy,” he emphasized.
Noting that in the last elections, there were 16 parties contesting against the PPP/C and now that has increased to over 20, he added that his party is prepared to win whatever is stacked against them.

However, speaking directly to his supporters, the General Secretary urged them to continue working in communities to encourage people to go out and vote on Elections Day.

“What is important for elections is getting the people out to vote and getting those votes counted…Bring people out to vote so when the votes are counted, this overwhelming victory will be a reality,” Dr. Jagdeo said.

“You know you and your children will make progress in the Guyana under the PPP,” he added.

Speaking of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party, Jagdeo told supporters that the leader of WIN Azruddin Mohamed who was sanctioned by the United States for Corruption is “trying to save his a$$ from jail, he is no victim,” while the main opposition parties lack any vision or plan for the country.

“If you are sitting at home undecided now, this is the party for you…Judge us on what we stand for, unity, progress…” he encouraged.

Boasting of his party’s stance on patriotism, he vowed that a PPP/C Government will continue to defend the country’s territorial integrity and will continue to invest in key sectors of the economy to ensure prosperity for all.

Political Parties will on Monday, July 14 march to the Umana Yana where they will submit their List of Candidates and nominators to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to contest the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Sunday disclosed that over twenty-five (25) of the candidates on his party’s list are under 25 years old.

“Over 25 of our candidates are under 25 years old…our list will look like Guyana, it will feel like Guyana,” he said at the PPP/C Campaign launch at Kitty, Georgetown, boasting of a list which not only includes young people but also representatives of each ethnicity.

Noting that the crowd at Kitty is “the biggest ever,” he urged the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to make arrangements to welcome a big crowd for Nominations Day.

“Tomorrow I expect to see many of you,” the GS said.

A total of 22 political parties is expected to submit their lists to contest the September 1, 2025, polls.

To successfully participate in the elections, parties must submit their symbol for approval and their Lists of Candidates: one National Top-Up List, at least six Geographical Constituencies’ Lists, and the Regional Democratic Councils’ Lists.

The National Top-Up list, which identifies the Presidential candidate, must have at least 42 candidates and between 300 and 330 nominators countrywide.

Each Geographical Constituency List must have between 150 and 175 nominators from each geographical constituency.

Prime Minister Brigadier (retd) Mark Phillips delivered a spirited call to action at the launch of the People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) re-election campaign, urging supporters to stay united, get ready for the polls, and secure “five more years of growth and visionary leadership.”

“I will be red till a dead,” Phillips declared to loud applause. “We have red in all a we, so red is the winning colour.”

Describing the PPP as a true national party, Phillips said its strength comes from diversity and inclusivity.

“When you look out here at the PPP and the representation, this is a national party, a multi-ethnic party. All the people are included,” he said. “We said and we believe in diversity. We said and we believe in inclusivity.”

He dismissed what he called the “coalition of the lightweights” and promised that PPP members would continue to fight harder than any opponent. “We are fighters. When we fight, we fight harder than the enemy,” Phillips said.

The Prime Minister urged supporters to use the weeks ahead wisely. “Let us take this period between now and September 1 very seriously,” he said. “When you leave here, ensure your name is on the list.”

Highlighting the government’s track record, Phillips pointed to major infrastructure projects under construction, including a new Demerara bridge, a bridge in Linden, and new highways.

“Comrades, this is a government that re-energised every sector in Guyana,” he said. “A government that brought life back to Guyana’s farmlands and pride to the people who feed our nation.”

He also reminded the crowd of last year’s $100,000 cash grants for persons 18 years and older, promising more to come. “Once we start something, we got to continue,” he said. “More cash grants coming — and it will not be less than $100,000.”

Phillips celebrated Guyana’s rising global profile, saying that a recent survey of 185 nations ranked Guyana as the number one country able to feed its entire population — making it 100% food secure.

He said when the government took office, the President gave direction that Guyana should lead in food, energy, and climate security.

“Today we are leading on all three fronts,” he said. “Next week we will have the Global Biodiversity Summit — that is leadership.”
Closing his speech, Phillips reaffirmed his commitment to the PPP’s vision. “For the past five years, I’ve supported President Irfaan Ali in office, and I am ready to serve you for five more years.”

“We promise five more years of growth, five more years of development, five more years of PPP visionary leadership.”

Lenox Shuman, who previously served as presidential candidate of the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) on Sunday, noted said he joined the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) after seeing investments in indigenous communities and young people.

Speaking at the launch of the PPP/C 2025 elections campaign, he noted that the party has demonstrated dynamism, foresight and vision.

“You cannot follow people who are visionless,” Shuman said. He served on the Opposition benches from September 2020 to March 2023 under a joinder list between the LJP, A New and United Guyana (ANUG) and The New Movement (TNM).

The former LJP Leader said investments in the Indigenous communities must be lauded.

“When I look for my brothers and sisters in those communities, I don’t think I have given enough time to talk about the exciting things coming to those communities,” he said.

He further referred to the provision of free education at the tertiary level which includes the University of Guyana and the Technical Institutes, noting that investment in free education is an investment in the future.

“It is the investment in youths that brought me to this party…. we should never gamble with our future, we should never gamble with our children’s future” he emphasized, adding that “only one camp looks out for our future and that is the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).”

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, has credited the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) with transforming the lives of thousands of Guyanese through deliberate planning, inclusive policies, and a commitment to building a future where “no one is left behind.”

Speaking at the launch of the PPP’s re-election campaign, Walrond opened her own experience. She noted that in 2020 when she was asked to be a Minister, she was not a party member or a candidate for elections.

“The party opened its doors and welcomed me in because the PPP believes in inclusion,” she stated.

She said President Ali asked her to serve and to contribute meaningfully to the country.

She emphasised that the PPP’s strength comes from embracing all Guyanese, wherever they live.

“We believe the strength of Guyana lies in all its people,” Walrond said.

She said the PPP is everyone – from Region One to Region Ten. She said the party’s guiding principle is that development must be for everyone.

Highlighting the economic transformation of recent years, Walrond described “life-changing progress” under the current administration.

For example, she said the construction of hotels has create 20,000 jobs”.

Further, she said between 2020 and 2025, the government has supported over 17,000 small businesses, and today there are women-led enterprises that have received funding that they could once only dream of.”

From Linden to Lethem and Bartica to Berbice, she said, the successes of small business owners, entrepreneurs, and workers reflect the “beauty and diversity of Guyana.”

Walrond also praised President Irfaan Ali’s leadership: “I’ve had the privilege of seeing first-hand the heart and mind of President Ali – a leader who is compassionate and wise beyond his years.”

Crucially, she stressed that Guyana’s development was not happening by chance. “Let me be clear: this development cannot and is not happening by accident,” Walrond said. “It is happening because of thoughtful planning, a clear vision, and a government that listens and believes in building a future where no one is left behind.”

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has delivered in abundance to indigenous communities, Dr Sarah Browne, President of the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) and a proud Lokono indigenous woman, said Sunday as the party launched its re-election bid.

“Over 2,000 indigenous Community Service Officers who were mercilessly fired under the previous administration have all been rehired,” Browne said, beaming with pride.

“Millions of dollars are now being transferred directly to the bank accounts of indigenous communities ,” she said, real money reaching real people to improve lives in places like Santa Rosa and beyond.

She pointed to what she called a “massive investment in health and education,” noting that the PPP has built schools and health centres in remote communities “where there were none before.”

“Ours is a legacy where young Guyanese, including young indigenous people, are given the opportunity to own homes and live in an environment where we can dream big and make those dreams a reality,” Browne said.

Reflecting on the past, Browne said the PPP’s return to office rescued indigenous communities from neglect.

“We took Guyana from the grasp of APNU+AFC that almost took us back to the dark days of dictatorship,” she declared.

Today, she said, indigenous youth are seizing new opportunities: “Many of us are now the first in our families to go to the University of Guyana, to own our own homes, to lift our families out of poverty. There has never been a better time to be young and indigenous in Guyana.”

Browne concluded by urging her fellow indigenous people to see the difference the PPP has made.

“The Guyana we know today did not happen by accident,” she said, noting that it happened because of visionary leadership.

The People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) on Sunday afternoon kicked off its 2025 Elections campaign launch with endorsements from several young people, including Cardiogolist Dr. Mahendra Carpen, economist Roger Rogers, Toshao of Bethany village Sonia Latchman, and former PNC central executive committee member Thandi McAlister.

The theme of their remarks carried the same thread: the PPP’s support for young people is worth a second term in office from September 1, 2025.

McAlister, who spent most her young life with the PNC, said she was asked many times by her former colleagues have asked her why she chose to change her support to the PPP.

She said her response has been the same: “Open your eyes, look around and with a clear conscience, and tell me, ‘Why not?’
Given the massive development across the country, she said the choice is clear, and she urged citizens to vote proudly for the PPP, “for the continuation of progress.”

Dr. Carpen, in his brief remarks, noted that having served 25 years in the health sector, he is impressed with the level of development in this sector in the last five years.

“What I have seen in healthcare in Guyana is unmatched anywhere I have ever seen, the pace of development…this is a shared vision coming from talented leaders…” he told the thousands gathered at Kitty, Georgetown, to witness the launch of the party’s campaign.

Latchman highlighted investments she has seen in the indigenous communities which she said need to continue.

Roger Rogers, who introduced himself as an Economist and former lecturer at the University of Guyana, now a Candidate for the PPP/C, lauded investments in the development of young people.

“My choice to support the PPP can be easily explained but I will highlight one simple important fact: the investment your government has been making and continues to make in the youth.

“The youth is the future of this country and we have invested and will continue to invest in the youth” he said.

Azizi Christiani, from the Essequibo Coast, expressed similar sentiments. Noting that the has seen firsthand this party support young people and people of every ethnic group, he said “this party believes that young people are not just the future but the present and that is why we are getting the opportunity now to lead.”

He was followed by former national cricketer and businessman Steven Jacobs. He added that not only does the party embrace youths and different ethnicities but also shows unity and love to everyone who serves the party.

“We have a decision to make on Sept 1 and let us not worry about personalities, let us ensure we vote for someone with a vision, someone with a plan and someone with a track record,” he shouted, referring to President Irfaan Ali.

Others who took the podium included Vickash Ramkissoon and Mishka White.

Palmer placed a low shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 22nd minute after Malo Gusto ran in behind Nuno Mendes, adding a second with a neat dummy and identical shot from the edge of the box just eight minutes later.

His defence-splitting pass allowed Joao Pedro to lob Donnarumma just before half-time to stun a team branded “the best in the world” by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca before kick-off.

Hobart Hurricanes XI and Rangpur Riders had both started their ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League campaigns with a win, but only one side could carry on their unbeaten streak after they met at Guyana National Stadium, Providence, with Rangpur Riders stealing a thriller off the last ball of the game to take the spoils and head to the top of the (GSL) table after five completed games.

Hurricanes captain Ben McDermott won the toss and inserted the Riders who got themselves to a competitive total of 151-6, thanks largely to 43 off 31 balls from Ibrahim Zadran at the top of the order and the swashbuckling blade of Kyle Mayers, who hit eight fours and two sixes to score 67 off 42 balls.

He remained unbeaten and got past the milestone of 4,000 T20 runs in the process.

The Hurricanes were thankful for the tricksy leg-spin of Usama Mir, his three wickets for just 15 runs kept the Riders total to a manageable one.

The Riders would also have been pleased with what has been around a par score for the tournament so far and were buoyed even more when Mayers removed Hurricanes’ opener Bhankuka Rajapaska caught behind by Nurul Hasan with the score on just four runs.

A solid partnership of 49 runs then followed in quick time between McDermott and Macalister Wright, the same pair who impressed with the bat in the Hurricanes first match of the tournament.

Any thoughts the Hurricanes might have had of coasting the total were soon dashed, however, when 53-2 soon became 82-5 with the top order all back in the hut.

With 55 required off the last six overs, Hurricanes had Mohammed Nabi and Odean Smith both set in double figures. Nabi then opened the shoulders in the 15th over, plundering Tabraiz Shamsi for a six and then a four, 13 runs off the over left the game in the balance, 42 needed from 30 balls.

Azmatullah Omarzai than rattled through a frugal over for the cost of just six runs to keep Riders in with chance, with 36 needed from 24 balls, Hurricanes were only ever a few lusty blows away.

The match swung one way then the other, Odean Smith hit Khaled Ahmed for four only for the Bangladeshi medium pacer to hit back right away and dismiss Smith for 20 off 13 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai did the business again, the 18th over costing just four runs.

Needing 22 off 12 deliveries, Nabi swiped the first ball of the 19th over from Khaled Ahmed for six but the twists still came as Ahmed dismissed Fabian Allen and Raf Macmillan in consecutive balls to leave Hurricanes needing 12 off the final over.

Azmatullah Omarzai ​was given the last over, Nabi swiped him for six and looked to have the game won before he fell for 44 to leave three runs needed off one ball.
