Sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, who has so far avoided holding a single press conference or formal interview on his quest for the presidency, was left fumbling when finally grilled by reporters.

When asked about who his Prime Ministerial Candidate will be, he paused, sucked his teeth, let out a sigh and then said, “very shortly.”

Asked when he will launch his campaign, he said, “very soon, very soon.”

Asked when he will host a press conference, he said, “very soon.”

When asked about his policies, he replied: “We will put the policies out there shortly in a timely manner, just be patient.”

When asked about his priority areas, he had nothing but this: “To invest in the people. To uplift the people.”

Reporters begged for an explanation: “How, but how?”

Still no answer. He only retorted: “We will invest in the people.”

Mohamed, facing US government sanctions on bribery and corruption, insisted he and his newly formed WIN party are ready to contest elections “even tomorrow.”

“We are ready,” he declared, but had to be rescued by Mark DeFrance, one of his key backers, when he faced questions.

He could give no answers when asked about energy policy, Guyana’s relations with CARICOM and other foreign powers, or how he would diversify the economy.

Asked for his top three polices, again, Azruddin struggled and could not name a single one.

In his first real test before reporters, Mohamed admitted that US sanctions “matter when it comes to [his] business,” but insisted they are not affecting his political ambitions.

“I still have some of my savings that I am using to assist my brothers and sister and to survive on,” he offered.

When asked about a possible extradition to the United States before the election, he dismissed the question with, “God is in charge,” offering no further words.

As he faced more questions and couldn’t answer, comedian Odessa Primus, one of his leading supporters, whisked him off, saying, “the Police is saying our time is up.”

Duarte Hetsberger, the Personal Assistant to disgraced former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, has joined Azruddin Mohamed’s party.

He was leading the party’s nomination day process, sitting next to Mohamed.

Hertsberger was dismissed at the end of December 2021, months after he benefited from a premature three-year renewal to his contract as the Personal Assistant to the Lowenfield.

Hetsberger was allegedly a prime suspect in the deletion of important data from computers within the GECOM Secretariat.

Hetsberger’s alleged actions were only detected when the new GECOM CEO, Vishnu Persaud, conducted an investigation after taking up the post.

“He realised that several computers were wiped. Computers which were under the control of that officer… when the IT Department intervened, the explanations he provided did not make sense according to the CEO’s report,” Sase Gunraj, a GECOM Commissioner told the News Room then.

Both Lowenfield and Hetsberger were being investigated by the police as part of their probe into allegations of fraud following the March 02, 2020, General and Regional Elections.

The incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Monday morning declared that it has the winning list of candidates for the September 1 general and regional elections, and that list, its leaders say, is a blend of continuity and renewal.

According to the party’s general secretary Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, the PPP/C list includes at least 27 young people under the age of 25, as well as sugar workers, miners, and rice farmers. In fact, he noted that a candidate is as young as 19-years-old.

The PPP/C was the second party to submit its list on Monday’s Nomination Day at the Umana Yana.

“This is the winning list,” incumbent President Dr Irfaan Ali told members of the media following the submission.

Promising to reveal the names on the list in the coming days, President Ali said the party’s slate reflects continuity, with individuals representing all sections of the population.

“Any impartial person in this country who had to choose a political party with a clear conscience would choose the People’s Progressive Party,” said Dr Jagdeo.

President Ali was accompanied by Dr Jagdeo and Prime Minister, Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips. All three leaders engaged with the media.

According to President Ali, the changes seen within the PPP are the result of hard work. Noting the party’s track record of delivering on its promises, he said its plans go “beyond the normal” and speak to the transformation of the country.

“Today, this mass movement that you are seeing behind the PPP came from the commitment we have made – staying true to our word and working hard to ensure that all of Guyana, in a massive way, is reflected in the People’s Progressive Party,” Dr Ali said.

Jagdeo added that the party’s vision includes all of the country’s people, with particular emphasis on youth.

He described Dr Ali as “incredibly experienced and still young”, while noting that Brigadier (ret’d) Phillips is a leader who once commanded the army.

“Victory 2.0,” Brigadier (ret’d) Phillips declared.

“This is the first step towards victory on 1st September.

“1st September represents the continuation of development and growth, with a focus on having youth at the forefront of Guyana,” Brigadier (ret’d) Phillips said.

Furthermore, Dr Jagdeo assured the public that the PPP can be trusted to deliver for all.

“The large victory can be assured because we have grown in every single community in this country, among every single race,” Dr Jagdeo said.

Presidential Candidate for the Alliance For Change (AFC) Nigel Hughes on Monday said the party will be contesting the general and regional elections in all ten administrative regions.

Hughes made the disclosure as the AFC waited to submit its list of candidates at the Umana Yana in Kingston, Georgetown.

Hughes was asked by reporters to comment on the regions that the AFC will be contesting during the 2025 Regional and General Elections, to which he said, “[we are running] in almost every region, the AFC is back, this is the AFC of 2011.

“We are running alone and we will stand and fall by the results.”

The AFC and APNU’s talks to form a coalition amid the 2025 elections collapsed earlier this year.

Hughes said the AFC’s list of candidates comprises of members who are young and should the party be elected, “50 per cent of my Cabinet will be women, half of the women will be young, and half of the men will be young,” Hughes said.

He further said that it is his hope that the Guyana Elections Commission will be fair in administering the elections.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is prepared and ready for the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections.

“Of course,” is ready, GECOM Chairperson, ret’d Justice Claudette Singh told the media on Monday as she arrived at the Umana Yana where Nominations Day is being hosted.

Justice (ret’d) Singh told the media that Nominations Day is “purely operational”.

“Today, the CEO (Chief Elections Officer) will be receiving the lists until 2 o’ clock.

“Should there be any defects on the lists needing correction that will be done within two days and corrections will be done,” Justice (ret’d) Singh said.

A total of 22 political parties have registered to participate in the September 1st elections.

Businessman Terrence Campbell is on the list of candidates for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which was the first political party to submit its list of candidates to contest the September 1, 2025 General and Regional elections.

APNU is one of the 22 contesting these elections.

APNU Leader, Aubrey Norton said the party’s list consists of “a lot” of young people who “know and understand” politics.

“We have a strong team. I believe we have the best team on the list,” Norton told members of the media just after submitting his party’s list.

Apart from Terrence Campbell, others on the APNU list are attorney Dr Dexter Todd, former Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Williams and businessman Saiku Andrews.

“We have a lot of what I would call a well-balanced list,” Norton said.

He added, “We have a lot of young people. They know politics and understand politics”.

Norton said APNU support is “intact”.

“I feel energized. Our support base has been activated. We don’t have to pay anybody to come here. Everyone that is here is here on their own free will.

“We are a party that the people are committed to…So I am extremely happy,” Norton said.

Norton was accompanied by APNU Prime Ministerial Candidate Juretha Fernandes and his Vice Presidential hopeful Ganesh Mahipaul.

Asked about her readiness for this role, Fernandes told the media it is one that she has prepared for “majority” of her life.

Backed by a roaring Providence crowd under the Sunday night lights, the Guyana Amazon Warriors lit up the National Stadium with a dominant performance to crush the Dubai Capitals by 57 runs and storm to the top of the points table in the 2025 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).

In Match Six of the high-stakes five-team showdown, the Warriors bravely defended a modest 138-7, turning the heat on with a fiery bowling display that folded the Capitals for 81 inside 16 overs.

Despite early blows- losing power-hitters Rahmanullah Gurbaz (0), Shimron Hetmyer (14), and Johnson Charles (11) inside the powerplay- the Warriors found their backbone in Moeen Ali.

The classy Englishman staged a counterattack with two gritty partnerships: a steady 43-run stand with rising teenage star Jewel Andrew and a quickfire 47 with the ever-dangerous Sherfane Rutherford.

Capitals’ left-arm seamer Kaleem Sana did his best to halt the momentum, but Romario Shepherd- playing his first game of the season- ensured the Warriors ended on a competitive note.

The real carnage, though, came when the Warriors had the ball.

Captain Imran Tahir orchestrated a bowling masterclass- rotating seven bowlers to perfection.

Dwaine Pretorius set the tone, sending back the out-of-form Rohan Mustafa, before Shepherd delivered a knockout punch with a double-wicket over.

From there, it was the Tahir show- the veteran leggie spun a web around the Capitals’ middle and lower order, finishing with an incredible 4/12- the best figures of the tournament so far.

Moeen Ali and Gudakesh Motie joined the party as the Capitals collapsed spectacularly.

With this commanding victory, the undefeated Warriors now sit pretty at the top of the table with two wins from three, while the Capitals are left clinging to a shot at the final ahead of their final clash against the defending champions Rangpur Riders.

Next up, the Warriors face the Hobart Hurricanes XI on Wednesday in what promises to be another sizzling encounter. (GSL)

Australia lead by 181 runs with four second-innings wickets remaining after 15 wickets fell on day two of their day-night Test against West Indies in Kingston.

Resuming on 16-1 in response to the tourists’ 225 all out, West Indies were dismissed for 143.

But the hosts’ pace attack roared back under the floodlights on a tricky pitch to boost their hopes of avoiding a 3-0 defeat in the three-match series.

Australia reached the close on 99-6 in their second innings, with Cameron Green 42 not out.

Australia had lost their last seven first-innings wickets for just 68 runs on day one, but West Indies suffered a similar fate on Sunday as they slipped from 82-3 to concede a first-innings deficit of 82.

Scott Boland, picked as an additional seamer in this Test in place of spinner Nathan Lyon, took 3-34 while Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins contributed with two wickets apiece.

John Campbell (36) top-scored but was one of only two West Indies batters to pass 20 before he was trapped lbw by Boland without playing a shot.

Australia then looked to build a match-winning advantage with the bat, but Shamar Joseph (2-26) removed openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja before Alzarri Joseph (3-19) ripped through the middle order.

Number three Green remained undefeated, however, to prevent a complete Australia collapse and he will resume his resolute innings alongside his captain Cummins at the start of day three. (BBC)

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues on Sunday afternoon took the stage at the launch of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) 2025 elections campaign where she noted that the plans outlined by the opposition political party is reflective of “child’s play.”

Rodrigues first took the PPP/C platform ahead of the 2020 elections; five years later, she noted that “no plan is superior to that of the PPP government.”

Having served in the housing sector, she said “in the last five years under the capable and competent leadership of the people you see here, we have seen transformation.”

This transformation, she said, is evident in the distribution of over 50,000 house and houselots and that too, with over 50% going to young homeowners.

“The PPP has the experience and the proven track record to get the job done,” the Minister said, as she pointed out that “the plans that are being pedaled by the opposition will keep people in poverty.

“They are playing ‘dolly house’ with your future and we have to stop them…We don’t have time for child’s play, this party is a serious party.”

With a mission to ensure people are comfortable, Rodrigues noted that the PPP/C will continue to ensure every Guyanese can have their own home once re-elected on September 1, 2025.

“Come September 1, we will be standing on business,” she said.
