New Zealander Kyle Jamieson added to Desert Vipers squad for GSL

New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has been added to the Desert Vipers squad for the upcoming ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 1 in Guyana.

He will replace Australia left-arm paceman Jason Behrendorff, who has had to drop out through injury.

Kyle, who is in the UK for a three-match Test series for the Black Caps against England, spoke to Vipers Voices about the season ahead and said he was really looking forward to the prospect of playing with the Vipers in Guyana, having heard many encouraging stories from compatriot and Vipers’ ILT20 captain Lockie Ferguson.

“I have obviously heard (about the Desert Vipers) from (fellow New Zealand fast bowler) Lockie (Ferguson).  Lockie has been there for a couple of years, and he just raves about the franchise and how good it is and his experience and his time with the group. So he has always spoken very highly (about the Desert Vipers).

“It just seems like a really good organisation and team to be a part of. And I am looking forward to seeing it on the ground.”

Kyle described the opportunity to play for the Desert Vipers in the Global Super League as the “perfect storm” since he is likely to already be in Guyana for a five-match One-Day International series against the West Indies beforehand.

“I had a message that there was an opportunity to link up with the Vipers for the GSL and I think we are in the West Indies as well for New Zealand. So (the GSL would be) straight afterwards. It is sort of a perfect storm and I cannot wait to be involved.

“I have not been to the Caribbean yet. And with the One-Day series for New Zealand before the GSL (Guyana Super League), it means I get a little bit of a taste of it there and then on to the GSL. So it will be cool and a different challenge, something very different. The GSL is a very short tournament, so that will provide some uniqueness as well. It is just a really cool opportunity.

“We have got our ODIs in Guyana so we will get a really good read of conditions through that series. I will obviously be talking to all the people that have been there before and played there and also locals. There is plenty of time between now and then to get a read on what it is going to be like but I am looking forward to it.”

The giant paceman said that, before the GSL, he was looking forward to is his latest assignment in the UK, returning to Test cricket with the Black Caps after a gap of two years because of injury.

“I have been fortunate to have a couple of Test series here (in the UK) now. I was joking with someone a few weeks ago that if you are lucky enough to get one Lord’s Test in your career then you are pretty fortunate. I am hopefully about to walk into my third.

“It has obviously been a little period of time to work through some things, and that aligns now to take that plunge back into the Test arena. I am excited to be part of this UK tour, building up to some Test cricket.”

Here is a list of players who will represent the Desert Vipers at the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League:

A 55-year-old fisherman was found dead inside his boat on Monday afternoon after reportedly rushing to check on the vessel when he was informed it was taking in water at a koker dam in Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is Stephen Ragbeer, also known as “Cannon,” of Lancaster, Unity Village, Mahaica.

According to police, the incident occurred between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm at the 40 Feet Koker Dam, Unity Village, within Regional Division 4C.

Initial investigations revealed that Ragbeer owned a fishing boat which he customarily docked at the 40 Feet Koker Dam after returning from his daily fishing activities.

Motorcyclist dies in Crabwood Creek accident

A motorcyclist passed away after crashing into a stationary vehicle on the Crabwood Creek road, Corentyne Berbice on Sunday evening.

The deceased is Vinode Deo, 22, who was part of the Community Policing Group and resided at Lot 126 Grant 1805, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne Berbice.

It has been reported that Deo was riding his motorcycle on the Crabwood Creek road when he collided with a parked Tapir.

He suffered injuries from the crash and was taken to the Number 75 Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead. Deo sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Deo’s mother, Shavnie Motiram told the News Room that at around 15:30 hours, after she returned home from work, she tried calling him to tell him to come back home since he was hanging out nearby. She mentioned that he assured her he would return, but he never made it.

Motiram recalled receiving a heartbreaking call about the accident around 18:00 hours. By the time she arrived at the hospital, her son had already passed away.

Motiram raised concerns about the issue of old vehicles parked along the side of the road.

“Is a old tapir. People should really move out them stuff like that. Sell out the old parts to the old iron company. The Government should look into that,” Motiram stated.

She said the family is having a hard time coping with the loss of her son.

Guyanese top-order batters Kevlon Anderson and Mavendra Dindyal have been named in West Indies Academy squad to face hosts Sri Lanka in a multi-format series from June 3-27.

25-year-old Anderson has played a solitary Test match, while averaging 37.74 in 28 First-Class matches with five hundreds and six fifties. He has also scored three fifties in 26 List A games.

Fellow right-hander Dindyal, 21, has a highest score of 82, his lone fifty, in four First-Class matches. He has appeared in five List A games.

Additionally, Guyana Harpy Eagles Head Coach Ryan Hercules forms part of the unit as an Assistant Coach.

Below is a press release issued by Cricket West Indies

A 16-member West Indies Academy squad has departed the region for a reciprocal tour of Sri Lanka from June 3–27, 2026, where the team will face the Sri Lanka Emerging Players in a multi-format series designed to further strengthen the region’s player development pathway.

It follows the visit by the Sri Lanka Emerging Team to Antigua in 2025, where the sides competed in two four-day matches, which ended one game apiece, and three One-Day matches, with the Academy coming out on top 2-1.

Once again consisting of two four-day and three 50-Over matches, this tour represents another significant investment in the development of the next generation of West Indies cricketers, offering players the opportunity to gain valuable overseas experience and adapt to challenging subcontinental conditions against quality opposition.

The squad features a strong blend of emerging regional talent, with 13 members being regular participants in the Academy programme, including Johann Layne, Jediah Blades and Zishan Motara, each having already represented the region at the Senior level.

With Ackeem Auguste being selected for the West Indies Senior Team and Carlon Bowen-Tuckett being unavailable for selection (personal reasons), emerging players Kevlon Anderson, Shaqkere Parris and Johann Jeremiah have been afforded the international developmental experience opportunity.

Guyana Harpy Eagles Head Coach Ryan Hercules will join the Academy coaching staff as an Assistant Coach for the tour, adding further experience and support to the management unit.

Academy Head Coach Ramesh Subasinghe spoke about the objectives for the tour: “Our Academy objective is simple, to develop players into the next level of their careers, and tours like this play a key part in that journey. Sri Lanka has historically been one of the toughest places for West Indian teams. This tour represents the perfect platform to immerse our brightest emerging talent in conditions that will truly test and shape them.”

“Last year we hosted a highly competitive home series against Sri Lanka in Antigua, and four players from that squad have since gone on to represent the West Indies senior men’s team, with many others earning regional franchise and CPL opportunities”, he added.

CWI’s High-Performance Manager Dwain Gill highlighted the significance of the tour as part of the organisation’s wider player development strategy.

“This tour is an extremely important component of our long-term development pathway programme as we continue to invest in the future of West Indies cricket. Opportunities like these allow our emerging players to experience competitive international environments, adapt to unfamiliar conditions and further develop the technical, tactical and mental skills required at the highest level of the game”, said Gill.

The squad will travel to Hambantota for the four-day series before moving to Colombo for the white-ball leg of the tour, with all matches being played under standard ICC playing conditions.

According to Fiaz Yamin of Tourism Guyana, the tour will serve as a great opportunity to market Guyana, using cricket as the vehicle to promote the country

The tour forms part of the team’s ongoing efforts to provide players with regional exposure and strengthen cricketing ties within the Caribbean.

Club Crusoe Cuzins was resuscitated in 2010 after an extended hiatus and had a short period of inactivity for a few seasons, but is back with new management and sponsorship.

Former captain Jason Persaud, through his Cuzins franchise and newly acquired sponsorship support, is leading the team’s return ahead of the upcoming 2027 season.

Persaud, during a conversation with Tourism Guyana representatives, explained that the club’s renewed direction is heavily focused on youth development and long-term sustainability.

“The team lacked the vision of youths for the future, and that is my main focus going forward,” Persaud stated.

He also expressed appreciation to Tourism Guyana and acknowledged the friendships built with several Tobago-based players, which helped make the tour possible.

Meanwhile the TG Titans, established in 2024 as a tapeball playing team, elevated their status to the hardball arena last year through several exhibition games and round robin tournaments.

The highlight of their brief but fruitful foray into the hardball arena came with the winning of the Ogle Cricket Club One-Day cricket extravaganza.

According to team officials, the tour presents an excellent opportunity for players to gain valuable experience while showcasing their abilities against competitive regional teams.

“The support from our sponsors has been tremendous and has allowed the team to embark on this important tour. We are excited for the opportunity to compete in Tobago and proudly represent Guyana,” team representatives noted.

‘Six-Head’ Gym dominant at GBA Development Tournament

The Andrew ‘Six-Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym emerged as the top performing club when the curtains came down on the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Development Tournament at the National Gymnasium on Saturday, capping off a successful day of competition that showcased the depth of talent rising through Guyana’s amateur boxing ranks.

Adding to the gym’s impressive showing, standout youngster Lennox Lawrence was named Best Boxer of the tournament, while veteran trainer Lennox Daniels received the Best Coach award.

The New Amsterdam Boxing Academy (NABA) finished as the second-best gym overall after producing several noteworthy performances throughout the programme.

The tournament featured 17 competitive bouts and three exhibition contests, bringing together fighters from the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, Pace and Power Boxing Gym, New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ), and the Guyana Police Force.

From the opening bell, the event highlighted the promising future of local boxing, with young athletes displaying discipline, technical skill, and a willingness to engage in spirited competition.

The action got underway in the Under-13 division where Harpy Eagles boxer Nathan Sugrim outscored teammate Omar Moses in the 27-30kg category.

Abu Barker followed with an eye-catching performance, forcing a second-round stoppage against Trevon Brant in the 23-26kg class.

Another all-Harpy Eagles clash saw Delon Andrews get the better of Omar Barker on points, while Andrew Lewis Gym’s Imhotep Vanderstoop delivered a composed display to overcome Tyrese De Rer of Pace and Power.

New Amsterdam’s Ukesh Persaud also impressed, earning a points verdict over Josiah Graham.

Competition intensified in the Under-15 category.

Junior Madray of the Andrew Lewis Gym produced a polished performance to defeat Marcus Vanderstoop of Harpy Eagles, while Josh Chester delivered one of the quickest results of the day, halting Travalta Harris in the opening round of their contest.

The Under-17 division featured several entertaining battles. Ryan Rogers of Forgotten Youth Foundation edged Cort Mahase of New Amsterdam Boxing Academy by split decision after a closely fought encounter.

However, it was Andrew Lewis Gym’s Lennox Lawrence who produced one of the standout performances of the tournament.

Lawrence overwhelmed Derick Springer of Pace and Power, forcing a stoppage in the second round and demonstrating the skill and ring generalship that ultimately earned him the tournament’s Best Boxer accolade.

The lone Under-18 bout ended with Itavius Vanderstoop of the Andrew Lewis Gym being declared the winner after Ishmeal Ramsaroop was unable to continue.

In addition to the competitive contests, three exhibition bouts gave developing boxers an opportunity to gain valuable ring experience.

Teddy Darlington faced Arjun Behari, while sisters Janya Ross and Makaya Ross squared off in an entertaining female exhibition contest. Another female exhibition encounter featured Akela Massay and Kenisha Klass, both of whom displayed encouraging potential.

The Under-19 category produced some of the day’s most intense action.

Amol Moses of New Amsterdam Boxing Academy was awarded victory after Nathan Christopher was disqualified, while Izzla Vanderstoop recorded a first-round stoppage against Hotham Vancooten.

Andrew Lewis Gym continued its strong run when Ken Harvey outboxed Curtis McDonald over the distance, showcasing sharp movement and effective punching combinations. NABA’s Jofes Jackson also turned in a solid performance to defeat Lekiem Amores on points.

An all-Pace and Power showdown between Akeeme Ross and Keyon Medas entertained spectators, with Ross getting the judges’ nod following an energetic contest.

The final two bouts of the tournament came in the Under-20 division.

Patrick Harvey of Forgotten Youth Foundation produced a disciplined performance to defeat Terron Wintz of New Amsterdam Boxing Academy on points, while Simeon Hamer ensured the Andrew Lewis Gym finished the event on a high note by outpointing Guyana Police Force boxer Osais Prince.

According to the GBA, the tournament once again underscored the importance of developmental boxing in Guyana.

For the Andrew ‘Six-Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym, the tournament proved particularly rewarding.

Finishing as the top gym, producing the Best Boxer in Lennox Lawrence, and seeing Lennox Daniels recognised as Best Coach highlighted the programme’s continued commitment to developing elite talent.

As the GBA continues its developmental efforts, the performances witnessed at the National Gymnasium offered further evidence that the sport remains in good hands, with a new generation of fighters eager to make their mark on Guyana’s rich boxing tradition.
