On May 22, 2026, the Government of Guyana officially launched the country’s national gold and jewellery brand under the brand name “Eldorado Reimagined”, marking a historic milestone in the transformation of the country’s gold sector, moving from raw commodity production to value-added manufacturing and craftsmanship.

The landmark event, hosted in conjunction with celebrations of Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, also featured the unveiling of the country’s first-ever minted in-country Independence commemorative gold medallion, produced entirely in Guyana, by Guyanese, using 100% locally sourced gold.

The evening brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the mining and jewellery sectors, and private sector stakeholders in a national celebration of Guyana’s evolving gold story.

Speaking at the launch, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali described the initiative as a defining moment in Guyana’s economic and cultural development, noting that “tonight represents more than the launch of a brand. It represents Guyana taking ownership of its story, its resources, and its future. For generations, our gold largely left these shores as a raw commodity. Today, we are demonstrating to the world that Guyana is capable of refining, manufacturing, and exporting excellence.”

President Ali further stated that the launch of Eldorado Reimagined reflects Guyana’s ambition to position itself as a globally recognised hub for high-quality gold products and jewellery manufacturing. “This initiative is about creating value within Guyana, expanding opportunities for our people, supporting local craftsmanship, and building an internationally respected Guyanese gold identity.”

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, said the launch signalled the beginning of a new chapter for the country’s gold industry. He emphasized that “Eldorado Reimagined is the result of a deliberate national vision to move Guyana beyond extraction and into value creation. This brand represents quality, authenticity and national pride. It is about reshaping the narrative of Guyanese gold and ensuring that more of the value generated from our natural resources remains within our country.”

Minister Bharrat also highlighted the significance of the commemorative medallion as a historic national artefact.“This medallion is not simply a collectible. It is a symbol of Guyana’s progress and advancements in the sector. The fact that the gold was mined and refined in Guyana, the product was designed in Guyana, and for the first time, a commemorative medallion was minted in Guyana using Guyanese gold makes this an extraordinary achievement for our country.”

The commemorative medallion, struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine gold, was produced as a limited-edition piece to commemorate Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Each medallion bears an individual serial number and reflects the craftsmanship capabilities emerging within the local sector. The event also featured a jewellery exhibition showcasing the work of local jewellers and manufacturers, organised in partnership with the Guyana Jewellers Association.

Representing the Association, Vice Chairman Vead Persaud described the partnership as an important step forward for the local jewellery industry. Mr. Persaud described the evening as providing “an important platform for Guyanese jewellers to showcase their talent, creativity, and craftsmanship alongside a national initiative of this magnitude. The Guyana Jewellers Association is proud to partner in this historic launch and to support the continued development of a stronger, more structured, and internationally competitive jewellery sector.”

The exhibition also featured participation from the Guyana Mining School, highlighting emerging talent and the future of jewellery craftsmanship and technical development within Guyana. The launch of “Eldorado Reimagined” forms part of Guyana’s broader effort to establish a modern, regulated, and globally competitive gold and jewellery industry capable of generating increased economic value, employment, investment, and international recognition for Guyanese-made products. Persons desirous of pre-ordering the limited-edition medallion can do so via the El Dorado Reimagined website https://guyanagold.ggb.gov.gy/pre-order/.

  • FIFA official hails Guyana’s nationwide youth football programme

FIFA official hails Guyana’s nationwide youth football programme

A G$44m grassroots project designed to transform the future of football in Guyana has received high praise from world governing body FIFA.

Amiel Mohammed, FIFA’s Regional Member Association Development Manager, conducted a whirlwind nationwide tour to assess the early stages of the newly launched Youth Ensemble U13 Programme.

The initiative, a joint venture between FIFA and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), aims to solve a long-standing logistical headache by establishing a permanent, structured annual calendar for youth football across the country.

Accompanied by GFF officials, Mohammed began his tour at the Buxton Ground, taking in East Demerara Football Association playoff matches between Melanie FC and Mahaicony Western Lions, as well as Haslington Stars against Plaisance FC.

He then moved on to the National Training Centre (NTC) to watch East Bank Football Association fixtures, including Circuit Ville Jaguars FC versus Timehri United FC, and Herstelling Raiders FC against Kuru Kururu FC.

The tour concluded at the West Ruimveldt Ground, where the Georgetown Football Association hosted a formal youth march-past.

“This is what football development is all about,” Mohammed said. “Being out here on the field, having the landscape and giving the youths the opportunity to play in a structured manner.”

Mohammed added that the project, funded under the FIFA Forward regulations, was born of a shared vision with GFF President Wayne Forde to inject adequate funding into a healthy and enriching grassroots environment.

Establishing sustainable, fully-funded youth leagues has historically been one of the biggest challenges for football associations across the Caribbean and Caribbean-adjacent regions.

GFF President Wayne Forde admitted that the financial burden of running competitive youth structures is often too heavy for nations to carry alone.

“We know the foundation of football is at the grassroots level,” Forde said. “It has been a huge challenge for many countries within our region to establish sustainable, well-structured youth competitions, particularly youth leagues. The investment required to achieve this would not be possible without the support of the governing body.”

Forde noted that the high-level FIFA visit offered vital reassurance regarding the global governing body’s commitment to the GFF’s long-term strategy.

What is the Youth Ensemble Programme?

The transformational project is structured to create a genuine pipeline from community pitches to elite international football, impacting more than 3,000 young players across 130 clubs nationwide.

Over the coming weeks, the tournament will split its age groups across weekends to maximise impact. Under-13 matches are scheduled for Saturdays using a fast-paced 9v9 cross-field format, while the Under-15 divisions will take over on Sundays, playing traditional 11v11 football.

The competition will use a blend of round-robin and knockout formats, culminating in a high-stakes National Playoff stage. That phase will see 20 top clubs divided into four groups, battling it out for a place in the semi-finals and national finals. (Modified GFF Press Release)
