Gentle, DeNobrega dominate 60th Independence Tennis Open

Nathan DeNobrega capped off an impressive campaign at the 60th Independence Tennis Open by claiming the coveted Men’s Open Singles title when the tournament concluded on Sunday at the National Park Hard Courts.

In what was one of the headline clashes of the championship, DeNobrega proved too strong for Gerald Scotland in the men’s marquee final, stamping his authority to walk away with the top honour.

The tournament, which brought together players across multiple age groups and divisions, also saw Afruica Gentle emerge as the queen of the courts. Gentle outplayed Tisel Patterson in the women’s championship encounter to secure the Ladies Open crown and add her name once again to the winners’ list.

In the masters division, veteran Phillip Squires produced a polished performance to clinch the Men’s 35 Singles title, overcoming Benjettan Osborne in their showdown.

The novice categories produced fresh champions as Harry Wu captured the Novice Men’s title after getting the better of Shamar Henry, while Jahdiel Harry triumphed in the Novice Women’s division ahead of Akila Peters.

The junior segment showcased exciting young talent. Israbella Grannum rose to the occasion to win the Girls Under-12 title after defeating Breyanna Younge, while Zion Hickerson battled his way to the Boys Under-12 championship, finishing ahead of Hayden Chan.

At the closing ceremony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., praised the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) and highlighted the importance of the Ministry’s partnership with the local governing body. Ramson commended the players for their talent, noting the significant level of improvement witnessed during the finals and declaring tennis a “core” sport in Guyana.

“I have seen some really exciting stuff today and I want to congratulate all of the players who have done so well,” Ramson Jr stated. “The skill level has improved over this period of time and it will only continue to get better.”

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, also offered his congratulations to the players on their efforts, while stressing the importance of quality facilities to provide space for continued growth and athletic development.

Meanwhile, President of the GTA, Cristy Campbell, extended gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the National Sports Commission, and the Government of Guyana for including tennis in the Diamond Independence celebrations and for their continued support of the tennis fraternity.

The GTA/MCYS 60th Independence Open was fully funded by the Government of Guyana.

  • Slots filling rapidly as registration heats up for One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast

Slots filling rapidly as registration heats up for One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast

Anticipation for the fourth season of the One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast has reached an all-time high since registration officially opened.

Tournament organisers, FL Sport, have reported an unprecedented surge in interest, with team slots across various zones filling up rapidly as regional squads rush to secure their participation.

Tournament Director John Ramsingh expressed immense confidence in the trajectory of this year’s tournament, noting the overwhelming response from the cricket community.

“We are well underway for achieving the total number of teams we want this year – 80 – and we are confident that by the respective match days, we will have those teams,” Ramsingh stated to the media.

With the stakes higher than ever, organisers are urging teams to act quickly rather than delaying their entry while finalising their rosters.

Ramsingh emphasised the urgency of the first-come, first-served system, recognising that the fierce nature of the competition often causes captains to deliberate over their lineups.

The Berbice, East Bank/West Demerara and Essequibo zones will have a maximum of 16 teams each, and East Coast Demerara/Georgetown will have 32 teams.

“It is a highly competitive tournament, and we understand that teams may want to lock in players before registering, but we are reminding teams that the registration is first-come, first-served, and many teams have so far paid their registration fee and indicated squads will be submitted later as per tournament guidelines,” Ramsingh explained.

To accommodate this, captains can immediately secure their team’s spot with a G$35,000 entry fee and finalise their ultimate 15-man talent pools closer to their respective zonal start dates.

Registration forms are currently available through the tournament’s official social media channels or via direct WhatsApp contact at +592 635-2235.

The action-packed tournament is set to bowl off with the Berbice Zone on August 8–9, featuring 16 teams battling across four premier venues: the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground, No. 69 Ground, Welfare Ground (Canje), and the Albion Sports Complex, which is slated to host the zonal finals on Sunday, August 9.

Following the opening leg in Berbice, the tournament moves to East Bank/West Demerara on August 15-16, followed by the Essequibo leg on August 22-23.

In a strategic move to maximise fan engagement and support local cricket festivities, the competition will pause during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) window.

Action will resume post-CPL with the highly competitive Georgetown/East Coast Demerara leg, spanning September 26-27 and October 3-4. This all leads toward the historic national grand finale on October 11, 2026, which will be hosted for the first time at the Anna Regina National Stadium in Region Two.

Financial incentives for the 2026 season have reached an all-time high, introducing guaranteed cash prizes for every single team that reaches the quarter-final stage of their respective zone.

Rewards begin at $25,000 for losing zonal quarter-finalists and scale up significantly, culminating in a $500,000 purse pocketed by the zonal winners before they advance to the National Finals.

The stakes at the national level are even higher, as teams will compete for a massive $2,000,000 grand prize, while the runner-up takes home $1,000,000.

In addition to the substantial cash prizes, the four national finalists will earn the prestigious right to represent Guyana at the upcoming Global T10 Tapeball Blast this October.

Individual brilliance will also be handsomely rewarded throughout the tournament.

The eventual tournament MVP is set to walk away with $150,000 and a brand-new motorbike.

Specialised awards for the leading run-scorer and top wicket-taker include $100,000 and a new television each, ensuring that personal milestones are celebrated alongside team success.

  • Aravind credits Desert Vipers for rapid ascent as he targets Global Super League glory

Aravind credits Desert Vipers for rapid ascent as he targets Global Super League glory

The trajectory of United Arab Emirates cricket has shifted dramatically over the last few seasons, and at the heart of that transformation is wicketkeeper-batter Vriitya Aravind.

Fresh off a triumphant DP World ILT20 Season 4 campaign with the Desert Vipers and a prolific domestic run, the 23-year-old is now turning his sights toward South America as he prepares to represent the franchise at the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).

For Aravind, the opportunity to feature in a prime global tournament spanning late July and early August is the direct result of an environment that has nurtured his development.

“I am certain it helped me on and off the field,” Aravind told the Vipers Voices podcast, reflecting on his time in the Vipers camp.

“On the field, of course, I can see my game progressing the right way and I am sure being a part of the Vipers camp was a catalyst in me getting to where I am right now, 100 percent. In terms of even off the field, I made great mates and got along with great coaches.

I have continued to talk to a few of the coaches here and there whenever I have a question and they have been very happy to help me out.”

The Changing Landscape for Associate Talent

Not long ago, the path from the Associate cricket circuits to premier global franchise leagues was narrow, if not entirely non-existent. Aravind debuted for the UAE in 2019, a time he recalls as having far fewer horizons for emerging local talent.

The landscape has changed rapidly. Following the Vipers’ recent championship success, Aravind’s teammate Khuzaima Bin Tanveer secured a stint in the Pakistan Super League with the Karachi Kings, joining national captain Muhammad Waseem as high-profile UAE exports.

“I still remember making my UAE debut in 2019, when opportunities like this simply did not exist,” Aravind said. “There was nothing like the ILT20 or other major leagues, where teams we only watched on TV could select players like us to represent them. It was always like a dream. But now we all know that that dream can be turned into a reality after seeing Khuzaima Bin Tanveer and Muhammad Waseem get picked in the PSL.”

For Aravind, this paradigm shift serves as immense motivation for domestic players, knowing that a strong showing in regional tournaments can serve as a direct portal to global scouting networks.

    Manifesting a South American Summer

The prospect of heading to Guyana for the five-team tournament is something Aravind admits he has been tracking for some time. After watching cross-town rivals Dubai Capitals feature in the tournament last year, the motivation to qualify via an ILT20 title became a burning ambition.

“I have heard a lot about the Global Super League,” Aravind explained. “I remember last year from the ILT20, when the Dubai Capitals were in it. So, I had quite a few of my mates in that tournament and they kept raving about that tournament to me. So even before this year, I thought if we win this tournament, we have a chance to go to GSL. When you win the league and you get another tournament in Guyana, it is like a dream come true in a way because I kind of manifested this and it kind of happened.”

To handle the transition and maintain match fitness during the searing UAE summer months, Aravind has relocated to the United Kingdom, playing club cricket for Stourbridge in the Birmingham League. The stint allows him to refine the dual roles he expects to perform in the Caribbean—anchoring innings at the top of the order or reprising the finisher role he executed during the ILT20.

“I live in Dubai and it is a bit hot now and we probably will not get that much by way of cricket opportunities right now because of the weather,” he noted. “With my batting, I want to be ready for either the top-order or batting as a finisher. I am trying to tick as many boxes as possible before I get to GSL because I want to be in that place where I feel completely prepared.”

    Eyeing the Double

The Vipers’ squad for the GSL features a formidable blend of international experience and UAE core strength. Led by Australian bowling allrounder Chris Green, the squad includes heavy hitters like New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and the West Indies’ Kyle Mayers, alongside Pakistan legspinner Shadab Khan. Crucially, the UAE contingent remains robust, with Aravind joined by tournament breakout stars Khuzaima Bin Tanveer and Matiullah Khan.

Having tasted silverware just a few months ago, Aravind sees no reason why the Vipers cannot replicate their formula on South American soil.

“We have done it before, literally a few months ago, so we know the success,” Aravind said. “We know what works for us as a franchise, as a team. And I think we can replicate that. And if we do most things right, I think we put ourselves in a very good position to win the GSL, for sure.” (Desert Vipers)

Desert Vipers GSL Squad: Chris Green (c), Jason Behrendorff, Daryl Mitchell, Bevon Jacobs, Shadab Khan, Vriitya Aravind, Khuzaima Bin Tanveer, Matiullah Khan, Sanjay Pahal, Andries Gous, Kyle Mayers, Khary Pierre, Ramon Simmonds, Zachary Carter.

Cutting edges Leung to Independence Three-Stage Cycling Title

The Diamond Jubilee edition of Guyana’s Independence Three-Stage Road Race delivered a historic, edge-of-your-seat finale, with 19-year-old Ajani Cutting dramatically pipping 18-year-old Alexander Leung to claim his first-ever elite overall crown.

Fully sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport through the National Sports Commission (NSC) and organised by the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), the 43rd edition of the prestigious race featured a new route.

Stepping away from the traditional Berbice route, this year’s course took riders through gruelling terrain across Linden, West Demerara, and Georgetown—a choice widely applauded by cyclists for providing an elite international-level challenge.

The gruelling multi-stage event forced riders to navigate distinct challenges across two intense days of racing, culminating in an epic sprint finish in the capital:

Stage 1: Linden to Mabura Highway and Back

    • Distance by Category: * Elites, Juniors, 35+ Masters, Cat 4 & Vets Over 50: 45 Miles
      • Females & Juveniles: 25 Miles
    • Stage Winner: Geron Williams (Continental) took a thrilling opening victory in 1:51:20.83, narrowly beating out Robin Persaud and Paul DeNobrega in a tight bunch finish.

Stage 2: Linden to Long Creek and Back

    • Time: May 23, 2:00 PM
    • Distance by Category: * Elites, Juniors, 35+ Masters: 60 Miles
      • Cat 4 & Vets Over 50: 40 Miles
      • Females & Juveniles: 25 Miles
    • Stage Winner: Robin Persaud (Carlton Wheelers) claimed the second stage in 2:39:39.05, out-duelling Alex Mendes and Paul DeNobrega to shake up the general classification standings going into the final day.

Stage 3: Schoonord to Parika and Back to Georgetown

    • Distance by Category: * Elites, Juniors, 35+ Masters: 60 Miles
      • Cat 4 & Vets Over 50: 40 Miles
      • Females & Juveniles: 25 Miles
    • The Route: Cyclists departed from Schoonord, raced down to Parika, and made a historic return across the Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo River Bridge, traversing the new Eccles-to-Ogle Highway before a frantic finish outside the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

In what was his first major tour since celebrating his 19th birthday and stepping up to the elite ranks, Cutting of Kaieteur Attack Racing showed tactical maturity far beyond his years.

The final push into Georgetown quickly transformed into a ferocious battle. As the peloton hammered down the final kilometres, Cutting found himself locked in a fierce, high-speed sprint against Continental’s 18-year-old phenom Alexander Leung and Team Velocity’s Linden standout Mark Lewis.

Leung crossed the line to capture the individual Stage 3 win in 2:27:42.00 after a crucial 10-second bonus time was factored in.

However, Cutting’s superb positioning earned him an aggregate General Classification (GC) time of 6:58:46.88—just enough to defend his lead and secure the overall title by a mere 12 seconds over Leung (6:58:58.88). Lewis rounded out the overall podium in third with a combined time of 6:59:15.88.

While the youngsters stole the show in the elite tier, seasoned riders and emerging prospects locked down victories across the other categories:

    • Juniors: Alexander Leung (Continental) added a dominant junior title to his second-place overall elite finish.
    • Masters 35-50: Segun Hubbard of Team Evolution claimed the division title on Stage 3, clocking 2:28:46.03.
    • Category Four: Mark Lewis (Team Velocity) showcased immense strength to take the Cat 4 stage win in $2:27:53.01, utilising a 5-second time bonus.
    • Masters 50+: Flying Star’s veteran Junior Niles rode away with a spectacular victory in 1:55:37.10, fending off challenges from Talim Shaw and Ray Harlequin.
    • Females: The ageless 59-year-old Denise Jeffrey of Team Evolution added another major piece of silverware to her cabinet, comfortably winning the female category in 1:34:25.03.
    • Juveniles: The multi-talented Justin Ten Pow put on a clinic to outpace his peers and rightfully secure the juvenile title.

Police Headquarters reported that a 24-year-old food vendor was robbed at about 11:50 hrs Sunday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was at his food stand when two men arrived on a black Honda XR motorcycle. The pillion rider, who was armed with a firearm, reportedly dismounted, approached the victim, and demanded his belongings.

  • Antonelli wins again to capitalise on Russell retirement in Canada

Antonelli wins again to capitalise on Russell retirement in Canada

George Russell suffered a major blow to his title hopes after retiring from the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix, handing victory to team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

The two Mercedes drivers had staged a gripping battle for the lead, swapping places several times, and were still nose to tail when Russell’s car suddenly stopped on lap 30.

Antonelli’s fourth win in a row, coupled with Russell’s retirement for what Mercedes said appeared to be a power-unit problem, puts the Italian 43 points ahead in the championship – seven points off two clear wins.

Russell’s retirement was not only a bitter blow to the Briton, but it also robbed the race of a no-holds-barred battle between the two Mercedes drivers, the second in two days after a dispute during the sprint on Saturday.

For the second day in a row, Antonelli complained about Russell’s driving, accusing him of pushing him off the track.

And shortly before Russell’s race ended, both drivers had been warned to keep the racing “tidy” or they would be told to hold position.

Before that, there had been several laps of frantic action and Antonelli appeared to have a pace advantage at the time Russell retired.

With Russell out, that paved the way for Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to contest second place – and Hamilton overtook his old rival in the closing stages to snatch it.  (BBC Sport)

IPL 2026: All-round Archer helps Rajasthan Royals secure last playoffs spot

It was a must-win game, and they were in early trouble, but Jofra Archer pulled off one of the IPL’s great all-round performances to seal Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) passage into the playoffs with a 30-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium.

RR will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Eliminator on May 27 in New Chandigarh. The IPL’s last league game, between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals in Kolkata, is now a dead-rubber.

Sent in to bat on a somewhat slow pitch in an afternoon game, RR lost both their rampaging openers early, and struggled for momentum through the early middle overs with hard lengths and pace-off deliveries proving difficult to hit.

Then RR, despite having Shubham Dubey and their designated Impact Player Ravindra Jadeja padded up, promoted Archer to No. 7, and he hit three sixes in a 15-ball 32 that shifted the game’s momentum.

That innings sparked a late surge that pushed RR’s total beyond 200. Then Archer began its defence spectacularly, taking two new-ball wickets with high pace and movement.

And just when Hardik Pandya seemed to threaten a late heist and deny RR their playoffs spot, Archer came back for his final over and removed him with the perfect hard-length delivery.

He finished with figures of 4-0-17-3, and RR wrapped up victory by 30 runs. (ESPNcricinfo)

IPL 2026: Kuldeep and Rahul help Delhi sign off with big win

Chasing the fourth playoffs spot, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) entered their match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at Eden Gardens hoping Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium.

In that case, KKR would have needed to chase down their target in about 12 overs to pip Punjab Kings on net run rate and finish in the top four.

But with Mumbai losing, both PBKS and KKR were knocked out, reducing this match to a dead rubber as early as the fourth over of the first innings.

In the end, KKR lost this game as well. After DC rode on KL Rahul’s 30-ball 60 to post 203 for 5, KKR were 126 for 3 after 13 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav then dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Rinku Singh off successive deliveries to derail them. Eventually, KKR were all out for 163 in 18.4 overs. (ESPNcricinfo)
