Five homeless as fire destroys Port Mourant house, arson suspected

A fire completely destroyed a house at Port Mourant on Tuesday morning, rendering five people homeless.

Stephanie Cecil, 29, a security guard with Queensway Security Service, told reporters that she secured her house on Three Street, Free Yard, Port Mourant, around 23:30h on Monday night before leaving to stay with her mother nearby. She confirmed her four children were already there.

Cecil recounted that at approximately 5:00 hours on Tuesday, she was awakened by a cousin who told her that her house was on fire. She initially dismissed the report but hurried to verify the situation.

Cecil was unable to save her belongings or her children’s. She also confirmed that the two-bedroom wooden and concrete house had no electricity.

She revealed that two years ago, she had a relationship with a Guyanese fisherman working in Suriname, who had sent her threatening messages whenever he was in Guyana.

According to Cecil, the man visited her workplace during her Monday night shift and behaved in a disorderly manner before leaving. Her fear for her safety led her to avoid staying at home.

Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald said the fire was intentionally set.

Cecil is actively considering her next steps and is asking for assistance to rebuild her home. “I am asking for help to rebuild,” the distraught woman declared.

Anyone desirous of supporting the family can contact 634 3115.

  • IPL 2026: Sooryavanshi’s 97 off 29 knocks Sunrisers out

    IPL 2026: Sooryavanshi’s 97 off 29 knocks Sunrisers out

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is enjoying one of the most extraordinary seasons not just of the IPL, not just of T20, and not just of cricket but of all sport and all time.

He produced his most extraordinary effort of this extraordinary season in the Eliminator, narrowly missing out on one of the IPL’s most coveted records but putting Rajasthan Royals (RR) on course for what turned out to be a thumping win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Sooryavanshi, 15, swept past numerous records over the course of his innings – among them the most sixes by any batter in a T20 tournament – and he came within one shot of breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest IPL century (30 balls) only to top-edge an attempted uppercut to deep third to fall for 97 off 29 balls.

RR’s innings fell away after that innings and a 21-ball 50 from Dhruv Jurel, and they ended up seven short of the 250 that had at one stage seemed a formality.

But it still proved more than sufficient thanks to yet another impactful new-ball burst from Jofra Archer. His spell against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday had been key to RR making the playoffs, and he followed up with three wickets in three powerplay overs to hold back an SRH top order that began the chase with an ominous flurry of boundaries.

A second-wicket stand of 51 off just 15 balls from Ishan Kishan and Travis Head was threatening to turn this game into a repeat of the last meeting between these sides – Sooryavanshi had scored 103 off just 37 balls that day, but SRH had fired from both ends where RR had fired from just one – but Archer made sure that didn’t happen, dismissing both of them.

He had already bounced out Abhishek Sharma before that; this was a truly special display against one of the most dangerous top threes in all T20 cricket.

RR eventually won by 47 runs, setting up a meeting with Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday. (ESPNcricinfo)

PPP calls for unity and generosity in Eid-ul-Adha message

Eid-ul-Adha message from the People’s Progressive Party:

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extends heartfelt Eid-ul-Adha greetings to all our Muslim brothers and sisters across Guyana and throughout the diaspora.

Eid-ul-Adha, one of the holiest observances in Islam, commemorates the unwavering faith, obedience, and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim. The occasion serves as a profound reminder of the importance of devotion to God, selflessness, compassion, and the willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good.

This sacred celebration also reinforces the values of charity, generosity, humility, and care for the less fortunate, as families and communities come together in prayer, reflection, and sharing.

These timeless principles continue to inspire unity, understanding, and kindness among people everywhere.

At this special time, the PPP joins with the Muslim community in celebrating the spiritual significance of Eid-ul-Adha and the message of peace, brotherhood, and humanity which it embodies.

May this blessed occasion bring joy, peace, good health, and abundant blessings to every home and family.

President Ali links sacrifice and nationhood in Eid-ul-Adha message

President Irfaan Ali extended Eid-ul-Adha greetings to Guyanese, urging citizens to embrace the values of sacrifice, compassion and unity as the nation observes the sacred Islamic festival alongside Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary celebrations.

In his Eid message, the President reflected on the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah, describing it as a timeless example of faith, surrender and devotion.

“The sacrifice was accepted—not because blood was shed, but because a soul had truly bowed,” the President stated.

He noted that Eid-ul-Adha calls on Muslims to practice selflessness, generosity and service, particularly through Qurbani — the sharing of sacrificial offerings with family, neighbours and those in need.

The President also referenced verses from the Holy Quran emphasizing charity and care for the vulnerable, stating that the spirit of Eid extends beyond personal celebration to collective responsibility and compassion.

Drawing a parallel between the observance of Eid and Guyana’s independence journey, President Ali said freedom and sacrifice are deeply connected.

“Our independence was not given; it was sacrificed for,” he said, noting that Guyana’s foreparents endured struggle, hardship and sacrifice in pursuit of dignity and national freedom.

As the country marks 60 years of independence, the President urged citizens to honour that legacy through acts of mercy, justice and unity.

“A nation that sacrifices for its most vulnerable citizens is a nation that honours the very spirit of Eid and the legacy of those who won our liberty,” he stated.

The President concluded by praying for peace, progress and prosperity for Guyana and extended Eid Mubarak greetings to all Muslims observing the holy occasion.

Kelcia Nelson crowned Miss World Guyana 2026

Kelcia Nelson was officially crowned Miss World Guyana 2026 on Saturday evening during a landmark coronation ceremony held at the Pegasus Exhibition Hall in Georgetown.

The event, produced by Majesty Talent Management Inc. (MTMI), formed part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary year of the Miss World Organisation and signaled what organisers described as a new era for the Miss World Guyana franchise.

Nelson received the crown from outgoing titleholder Zalika Samuels before an audience comprising members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, corporate representatives, members of the media and invited guests.

The evening’s programme was co-hosted by media personality Jamicia McCalman and Samuels, whose reign was recognised for her international representation of Guyana and advocacy under the Beauty With A Purpose platform.

During the ceremony, Jenica Walcott was officially presented as Heiress and first runner-up. In that role, she is expected to undertake national and local representational duties throughout the Miss World Guyana 2026 reign cycle.

Meanwhile, Nelson will represent Guyana at the 75th anniversary edition of the Miss World Festival scheduled to be held in Vietnam from August 9 to September 5, 2026. The international competition is expected to begin in Hanoi and conclude in Ho Chi Minh City, bringing together delegates from around the world.

Saturday’s coronation also marked a significant institutional milestone for MTMI, which used the occasion to unveil an expanded national structure and outline a renewed direction for the franchise.

Representatives of the organisation said the restructuring forms part of a broader vision aimed at strengthening talent development, national representation, cultural storytelling and social impact initiatives tied to the Beauty With A Purpose mandate.

The organisation also announced plans for future philanthropic, editorial and youth-focused programmes through the proposed establishment of the Majesty Purpose Foundation.

MTMI currently serves as the exclusive national franchise holder for Miss World Guyana and Mister World Guyana, operating across pageantry, talent representation, advocacy and creative development initiatives.

New diaspora bond to be launched next week, President Ali says

As Guyana observed its 60th Independence Anniversary on Tuesday, President Dr Irfaan Ali announced that a new diaspora bond will be launched within a week.

President Ali told a press conference at the National Stadium, Providence, that the bond will allow members of the Guyanese diaspora to raise funds and invest in public infrastructure projects.

“Members of the diaspora, here is your opportunity to make your contribution and be part of a massive transformation in your country,” President Ali said.

Moments earlier, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley said she and President Ali are working towards creating the new “Trident Arrow Investment Fund”, which will allow citizens of both countries to invest in critical infrastructure and long-term national projects.

According to her, the fund will allow citizens to earn sound returns and become owners of projects in their respective countries.

Guyana, Barbados creating new investment fund as travel becomes easier with digital ID card

Just as Guyana and Barbados officially launched a new programme to make travel between the two countries much easier, the leaders of both states say they will continue to partner and are now looking at a new investment fund.

On Monday, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley became the first Bajan to travel to Guyana using a digital identification card instead of a passport. This is a new measure being implemented by both countries, allowing their citizens to travel without passports.

“This initiative represents a major step forward in regional cooperation,” President Ali said at a press conference on May 26.

He explained that the venture was made possible through the passage of the necessary orders by the cabinets of both countries, following consultations involving government officials, CARICOM IMPACS and other regional stakeholders. It will be fully rolled out from July 1, giving airlines time to adjust.

Prime Minister Mottley travelled to Guyana to join the country’s celebrations for its 60th Independence Anniversary. At the press conference, she said this initiative should, over time, be expanded to other Caribbean countries.

Importantly, she announced that she and President Ali are working towards creating the new “Trident Arrow Investment Fund”, which will allow citizens of both countries to invest in critical infrastructure and long-term national projects.

According to her, the fund will allow citizens to earn sound returns and become owners of projects in their countries.

  • IPL 2026: Patidar leads the way as RCB storm into second straight final

IPL 2026: Patidar leads the way as RCB storm into second straight final

Rajat Patidar led defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) into the final with the quickest innings of 90 or more in the IPL, scoring a delightful unbeaten 93 off 33 to take his team to 254 for 5, the highest total in an IPL playoff, against the best attack of the tournament, Gujarat Titans (GT).

Having finished in the top two, GT still have a chance to make the final at their home ground in Ahmedabad in Qualifier 2 as they await the winner of the Eliminator between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. The last eight IPLs have been won by the side winning this fixture: Qualifier 1.

Asked to bat first in chase-friendly Dharamsala, RCB came out full of intent and skill despite missing the injured Phil Salt, but GT nearly snuck back in with a period of 22 balls, 18 runs and two wickets of set batters in a single Jason Holder over.

In the time that Patidar scored 93 off 33, the other end, including extras, produced 68 off 37 legal deliveries.

Having never scored more than 233, GT needed something special, and only Jos Buttler came close to that with 29 off 11. The RCB fast bowlers ran riot and took out half the side within the powerplay. (ESPNcricinfo)
