Police injured in accident at Hague

A police officer was injured on Sunday following a road traffic accident on the Hague Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

The accident occurred at about 12:03 hrs and involved a Force motorcycle, registration number CR 6252, ridden by a Police Corporal attached to the Regional Police Division 3 Traffic Department, and motor car PPP 758, driven by a 39-year-old man of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

Investigations revealed that the motor car was initially stationary on the northern side of the roadway facing east. The driver then made a U-turn across the road, resulting in a collision with the approaching police motorcycle, which was proceeding east along the northern side of the Hague Public Road.

As a result of the impact, the motorcyclist was thrown off his motorcycle and landed on the roadway, sustaining injuries to his body.

He was assisted by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital while conscious. He was later transferred to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital for further medical treatment.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motor car showed no trace of alcohol. He is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

Two feared drowned at Unity Beach

Police in Regional Division 4 ‘C’ are investigating an incident at Unity Beach, East Coast Demerara (ECD), which has left two persons missing after they were reportedly swept away by strong currents on Sunday afternoon.

According to initial investigations, the incident occurred at about 14:00 hrs while the pair were swimming at Unity Beach. Waldron reportedly began drifting further out into the Atlantic Ocean and called for assistance.

Francis reportedly went to her aid, but both individuals were subsequently pulled under by the current and disappeared.

  • West Ruimvelt Primary storm to Demerara zone title in Future Warriors Tapeball

West Ruimvelt Primary storm to Demerara zone title in Future Warriors Tapeball

West Ruimveldt Primary, a consistent face in the Future Warriors Tapeball for Primary Schools tournament, powered by ExxonMobil Guyana, overcame their final-round jitters from previous years to surge to the Demerara zone title on Sunday at the National Stadium, Providence.

Having previously stumbled in the final rounds in yesteryears, West Ruimvelt chose the grandest stage to deliver its most complete performance.

Blunting Chateau Margot’s reputation as the tournament’s preeminent ‘chase masters,’ West Ruimveldt posted 66 for 4—the highest total of the competition—before producing a clinical bowling display to choke the East Coast Demerara outfit to a paltry 40 for 7.

The foundational bricks of West Ruimveldt’s championship-winning total were laid by Bryan Hunter, who smashed a brisk 12-ball 23, punctuated by three boundaries and a solitary six.

Skipper Steven Orie provided the perfect foil with a crucial 18, ensuring the run rate never dipped despite Mahendra Chunilall’s probing spell of 2 for 10.

Chateau Margot’s pursuit never found its rhythm against a relentless West Ruimveldt attack. Rohit Shama top-scored with just five as Vincent Farley (2 for 5) and the ubiquitous Orie (2 for 8) triggered a procession of wickets.

Orie capped off a sensational individual campaign as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 49 runs, alongside a three-wicket haul that rightfully earned him the Most Valuable Player award. Farley finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with five scalps.

Part of the action in the high-octane final between West Ruimveldt Primary and Chateau Margot Primary at the National Stadium, Providence, on Sunday

Earlier in the day, West Ruimveldt signalled its intent in the first semi-final by dismantling Rama Krishna Primary.

A combined bowling effort from Farley (2 for 3), Hunter (2 for 7), and Zyron Austin (2 for 12) restricted Rama Krishna to 36 for 8, before Orie’s steady 10 steered them into the final.

Chateau Margot’s route to the final was far more dramatic. They pulled off yet another signature chase against former champions Stella Maris, hunting down a target of 52 with five wickets and seven balls to spare.

Ezekiel Thomas’ unbeaten 18 and Clevon Jacobs’ 16 had originally lifted Stella Maris to 51 for 2, but Wazim Khan’s ice-cool, five-ball 10* sealed an emphatic win for Chateau Margot.

Stella Maris eventually found consolation in the third-place playoff, bossing a 51-run chase against Rama Krishna to win by seven wickets inside 5.3 overs.

Jeremiah Scott’s blistering 24 off 13 balls and Joshua Horatio’s cameo of 14 off 7 rendered Michail Nelson’s earlier 12 for Rama Krishna obsolete.

All four top schools received a bag of cricket equipment, an electronic tablet for scoring, and agility kits to support their continued interest in the sport, along with medals and trophies.

The highly competitive Demerara leg featured 16 schools, including Grove Primary, Supply Primary, La Grange Primary, Meten-Meer-Zorg Primary, St. Pius Primary, Winfer Gardens Primary, Enterprise Primary, Comenius Primary, Redeemer Primary, Camille’s Primary, ISA Islamic and School of the Nations.

The grassroots caravan now shifts to the Berbice zone at the historic Albion Sports Complex on June 13-14, followed by the Essequibo zone at the Anna Regina National Stadium on June 20-21.

The three regional champions will then collide in a blockbuster ‘Champion of Champions’ tournament slated for August/September.

  • Hetmyer recalled to ODI squad for Sri Lanka series; Motie, Rutherford and Joseph also included

Hetmyer recalled to ODI squad for Sri Lanka series; Motie, Rutherford and Joseph also included

Shimron Hetmyer’s absence from the 50-over format has come to an end, with the left-hander headlining a distinct Guyanese flavour in the 15-member West Indies squad named for the upcoming three-match One-Day International series against Sri Lanka.

Hetmyer, who last featured in an ODI back in June 2025, has forced his way back into the selectoral frame following a productive outing at the recently concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

However, he will only link up with the squad in Jamaica ahead of the third and final match.

The middle-order batter is joined by three of his countrymen—left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, big-hitting Sherfane Rutherford, and fast-bowler Shamar Joseph—forming a hefty Guyanese bedrock for the home side as they kick off their home season at Sabina Park from June 3.

The series marks a critical juncture for the West Indies as they begin their quest for automatic qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.

Under Shai Hope’s captaincy, the hosts will also look to defend an enviable record, aiming to extend their unbeaten home ODI series streak to five.

The squad is further bolstered by the return of premier fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, who steps back into international cricket after a lengthy layoff with a back injury sustained in July 2025. Motie also returns to the fold after missing the away assignment in New Zealand last November.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy emphasised that the strategic integration of players like Hetmyer is part of the long-term vision for the 2027 World Cup, while laying out the immediate expectations for a disciplined Sri Lankan challenge.

“Sri Lanka is a disciplined and skilful ODI unit, especially in conditions that demand patience and smart cricket. For us, this series is about setting the standard, intensity in the field, clarity with the bat, and consistency with the ball. We want to play fearless but intelligent cricket and continue building the identity we believe West Indies cricket should represent.”

The West Indies squad arrived in Kingston on Sunday following a 10-day preparatory camp at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

With the team management stressing collective accountability over isolated genius, Sammy reiterated the ethos he wants his team to project on the park.

“In our desire to make home a fortress in ODI cricket, I want the team to win moments consistently rather than relying on individual brilliance, which we have stressed for the last 18 months.”

The three-match series will be played entirely at Sabina Park, with the opening fixture on June 3, followed by two day-night encounters on June 6 and June 8.

West Indies ODI Squad: Shai Hope (capt), Ackeem Auguste, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Shimron Hetmyer, Amir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Shamar Springer.

Team Management: Daren Sammy (Head Coach), Rawl Lewis (Manager), Floyd Reifer (Assistant Coach – Batting), Ravi Rampaul (Assistant Coach – Bowling), Rayon Griffith (Assistant Coach – Fielding), Dr. Denis Byam (Physiotherapist), Darc Browne (Strength & Conditioning Coach), Harone Jackson (Message Therapist), Avenash Seetaram (Performance Analyst), Jerome Foster (Content & Media Officer).

    Match Schedule:

    • 1st ODI: June 3 – Sabina Park, Jamaica @ 9:30am in Jamaica/10:30am AST
    • 2nd ODI: June 6 – Sabina Park, Jamaica @ 2:30pm in Jamaica/3:30pm AST
    • 3rd ODI: June 8 – Sabina Park, Jamaica @ 2:30pm in Jamaica/3:30pm AST

  • Kohli, bowlers lead RCB to second straight IPL title

Kohli, bowlers lead RCB to second straight IPL title

It took them 18 years to win their first title, but Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) took no time in becoming only the third team to successfully defend it.

Their seam bowlers made superb use of a slightly sticky surface after Rajat Patidar won the toss, restricting the Gujarat Titans (GT), who were in their third final in five years of their existence, to 155, the exact same score RCB managed in the league match against the seam team in the same ground on the same pitch No. 6 bang in the middle of the square.

Josh Hazlewood, who has never lost a T20 or ODI final, set the tone with the wicket of Shubman Gill in his first over.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar momentarily reclaimed the purple cap with two wickets, and Rasikh Salam capped off his best IPL with three to take his tally for the year to 19.

Last final’s Player of the match, Krunal Pandya, who won his fifth IPL final out of five, also chipped in with the big wicket of Jos Buttler in his analysis of 4-0-23-1.

He was now behind only Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu on titles.

Only three out of 26 scores under 190 in a full match had been defended successfully this IPL.

With the ball still nibbling around, the best attack in the tournament would have thought they had a chance, but amid falling wickets, Virat Kohli chose this final to hit his fastest IPL fifty and his highest playoff score, leading a five-wicket win with two overs to spare. (ESPNcricinfo)

  • PSG go back-to-back and join ‘greatest of all time’

PSG go back-to-back and join ‘greatest of all time’

Paris St-Germain underlined their status as one of European football’s greatest ever teams by becoming only the second club to retain the Champions League.

Their nervy 4-3 win on penalties over Arsenal following a 1-1 draw in the final in Budapest backed up their 5-0 win over Inter Milan in Munich 12 months ago.

In doing so they became the first side to successfully defend their title since Real Madrid’s three-peat from 2016 to 2018, and only the second to do it in the Champions League era – 1993 onwards.

Indeed, across the competition’s 71-year history, PSG are just the 10th club to win successive titles.

“I’m mixed,” boss Luis Enrique said after the game. “Excitement, fatigue – everything. But this is the best moment of the season. We are still champs, two in a row, it’s amazing.”

All 10 of the outfield players who started PSG’s win over Arsenal, also started their victory over Inter Milan.

Only goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was new, in for Gianluigi Donnarumma who was signed by Manchester City last summer.

Over the past two years Luis Enrique’s team have dominated almost all competitions they have competed in.

Since the start of last season they have won eight of the 10 trophies available to them – only missing out on last summer’s Club World Cup and this campaign’s French Cup.

If they continue their dominance next season PSG could become just the fifth side to win three successive Champions League/European Cup titles.

But they still have a way to go to break Real Madrid’s record of five European Cups in a row between 1956 and 1960. (BBC Sport)

The cricket board expressed immense confidence that, under his stewardship, the legal body will continue to uphold the rule of law and contribute meaningfully to national development, and wished the incoming president a highly impactful tenure.

  • Chateau Margot knocks out Grove as new Demerera champion to be crowned in Future Warriors Tapeball

Chateau Margot knocks out Grove as new Demerera champion to be crowned in Future Warriors Tapeball

There will be a new Demerara zone champion in the Future Warriors Tapeball tournament after a clinical, all-round display from Chateau Margot Primary dumped defending champions Grove Primary out of the competition on a rain-affected but ultimately rewarding opening day at the National Stadium.

While inclement weather battered the majority of Region Four on Saturday, the Providence venue’s superior drainage infrastructure again came to the fore.
The moment the rain dissipated, the ground was presented in pristine condition to welcome 16 primary school teams for the Demerara leg of the ExxonMobil Guyana-powered tournament.
By stumps, a day defined by high-quality, budding talent left just four teams standing: Chateau Margot, Stella Maris, West Ruimveldt, and Rama Krishna.
The headline act of the quarter-finals belonged to Chateau Margot, who executed a flawless chase to unseat the title holders.
Grove Primary, opting to bat, put up a competitive 53 for 3 from their allocation of eight overs, anchored by a solid 22 from Anderson Peters. However, the East Coast Demerara outfit showed no sign of big-stage nerves.
They aced the chase with an over to spare, reaching 54 for 4 on the back of a captain’s knock from Brandon Billey, whose unbeaten 14-ball 22 sealed an emphatic victory.
Chateau Margot’s reward is a semi-final clash against inaugural champions Stella Maris Primary, who kept their hunt for a second title alive with a gritty 13-run win over Enterprise Primary.
Defending a modest 46 for 6, built around Delmar Mansell’s 17, Stella Maris choked Enterprise’s chase, restricting them to 33 for 5.
Jared Joseph proved to be the game-changer with the ball, bagging 2 for 6 in his solitary over.
On the other side of the draw, West Ruimveldt Primary stormed into the final four with a dominant performance against School of the Nations.
A brisk, unbeaten 21 from Steven Orie, well-supported by Jermaine Tracey’s 18, propelled West Ruimveldt to a formidable 61 for 2. School of the Nations never got going in reply, stalled at 39 for 3 when the overs ran out.

West Ruimveldt will face Rama Krishna Primary, who produced the most lopsided victory of the afternoon. Powered by Shiv Singh’s fluent, 15-ball 21 not out, Rama Krishna posted an imposing 60 for 1 before their bowlers completely dismantled Comenius Primary, routing them for just 21 for 7 in a comprehensive bowling display.

The tournament, which also featured spirited participation from Camille’s Academy, Supply Primary, La Grange Primary, ISA Islamic Primary, Meten-Meer-Zorg, Winfer Gardens, St. Pius, and Redeemer Primary, moves into its business end on Sunday morning.

The semi-finals are scheduled to bowl off at 10:30h, followed immediately by the third-place playoff and the final.
At stake, beyond the immediate silverware and individual accolades, is a coveted spot in the Champion of Champions final.
The Demerara winners will eventually clash with the zone champions from Berbice—who play at the Albion Sports Complex on June 13-14—and Essequibo, whose leg takes place at the Anna Regina National Stadium on June 20-21.
